Grammys
“Here’s my question,” says Admin. “Are people like Sarah Vaughan going to be forgotten?”
“Well, won’t everyone be eventually?” says Spence.
“Interesting,” Admin says. “How much more human history will there be? 1000 years? 2000? 10,000? 36 days?”
“I just felt a chill.”
“Then here’s an antidote – a bit of Sarah Vaughan. Listen to what she does around 1:10, I think it is, and also how she handles the ‘easy’ in ‘easy chair.'”

Good morning, y’all! That was amazing! We haven’t listened to much Sarah Vaughan, but that may need to change. Some of today’s artists seem like they try to pack a thousand notes into each word — all that up and down drives us crazy! — but Sarah does it just enough to make it interesting.
8:57 am on February 13th, 2012
Good morning Kirby and all. That song was from 1958, long ago.
We watched the end of the Grammys last night and were glad to see Adele win, although we would have liked to see Lady Gaga get it too, for album of the year. We like her message in Born This Way. She teaches tolerance, which we think is a good thing.
Barb’s DIL called at 6:45 this morning to see if she had seen the commercial by Chipolte during the Grammys. It is excellent. Oley in particular will love it.
Melanie, can you go to youtube and put it on the blog (we are not sure how to do it)? It is called Back to the Start, and has a powerful message, with Willie Nelson singing background. We were blown away! It has gotten over 4 mil hits already!

Morning all. Sending up prayers for Whistler. Will be gone most of the day so we’ll see what you have all been up to later tonight

Good morning all. We only got to watch a little bit of the Grammies, because Mom never got to sleep at all on Saturday night. She talked us all into bed early last night. But we did get to see the Chipotle commercial, Maggie. LOVED IT! And now Mom says she will feel safe eating at those places (they do not tend to eat at chains.) We recorded the show so we will watch more tonight. We really love Adele so we’re glad she won so much.
We are also praying for Whistler.
Thanks for the advice last night. Bear, Kat does not sleep in her krate. She did in the beginning, but not for a long time. She sleeps on her own bed in the bedroom, just like the rest of us. She sleeps through the night, and wakes up Mom or Pop when she is ready to get up and go out. Maggie, Kat can go 9 hours in the house when the ‘rents are home. So it is not a matter of “holding” it. She is only kept in the krate when they go away, for a maximum of 5 or 6 hours. Yesterday, she was in there for only 3 hours, and still “went”. We think it is either a) she never learned that it is not acceptable to “go” in her krate, or 2) she is upset when they put her in there and go away. Mom says she just needs her to consistently not go in there, and then she could start letting her have run of the house when they aren’t home. It is her one and only vice.

Thank you T & G, and have a great day!
We are wishing for Whistler to be found safe and sound today. Maybe Whitey Lance can send out some clues as to where he is.
Chipolte Mexican Grill, who sponsored the commercial Back to the Start, has contributed over 2 mil to promote sustainable agriculture. You can Google Chilpolte Cultivate Foundation to find out more. Pasture raising of animals destined for food is much more humane and healtier for the animals, plus there is less environmental impact. This is a cause that we feel pasionately about, so please excuse Barb if she is on her soap box.
Currently, 97% of the pork produced in the US is factory raised. Horrible! This is what Oley’s folks were talking about recently, with their purchase from Caw Caw Pork. Right now it is a lot more expensive, but as demand for sustainable products increase, costs will go down. We can all do our part!
9:42 am on February 13th, 2012
Thanks, B&M and T&G! We had fun with that. First we watched the commercial. When Mom was “farming,” she and her brothers only had three hogs, so it was very much not a factory! Those animals were definitely raised by hand.
Then after we watched that, there were some other icons that popped up on the screen, and one of them was for the Ladybug Song, which Mom learned for the library storytime, so she wanted to watch that one. Then another thing popped up for the Duck Song, which Mom didn’t know, so she wanted to watch that one. It was pretty funny, so then Mom had to watch the Duck Song 2 one. I think she could sit here all day, but I reminded her that she has stuff to do!
10:02 am on February 13th, 2012
Who is Sarah Vaughan?
Good morning all.
10:47 am on February 13th, 2012
Maggie, we are equally passionate about finding more humanely-raised meat products. Besides the ethical side of it, which is a big priority here, we believe that factory “farm” animals are subject to much hormone-inducing stress, which cannot be healthy for humans or canines to consume.
10:58 am on February 13th, 2012
Oley, Besides the hormones, the hogs and poultry are also subjected to a constant barrage of antibiotics because they are so unhealthy. Don’t people get that this all eventually gets consumed by the humans at the end of the food chain?
And don’t even get Barb started on GMO’s. Something like 80-85% of the corn grown in the U.S. is genetically altered. Big companies like Monsanto are so powerful that their lobbying controls government regulations. Do people realize that we are actually altering the DNA of corn and soybeans? That is done so the corn will still sprout after the ground has been doused with weed killing chemicals. Frankenfoods!!! OMD!!!

B.Stover: You must click on the link that Admin supplied right below the words “easy chair”.
Whistler is a beautiful dog and I hope that he and Sylvia are reunited soon.
11:18 am on February 13th, 2012
B&M, take a look at this link. This is BIG news, although the need for it actually grosses us out.
http://hsus.typepad.com/wayne/2012/02/mcdonalds-news.html
Sarah Vaughan is O.K. But we prefer Adele!
11:22 am on February 13th, 2012
Dawson: I know. I was kidding.
11:28 am on February 13th, 2012
Sarah Vaughan is not someone mom ever listened to, but she says she knows the name.
Masquers, Thanks for posting the information about Whistler. We read about him a couple of days ago on the internet…must have been on the Yukon Quest’s facebookie page. We are praying for his safe return.
11:29 am on February 13th, 2012
Whistling for Whistler! Come, come Whistler!
Jesse, our go to guy, is sick today. Hopefully he will be well tomorrow. Still getting the house ready.
Dan’s Care meeting is set for Friday at 11 am. Making subtle changes around here to help him out.
He has very kindly told my sister everything we have to do in order to make the house the way he wants it. Rearrange the kitchen is top on his list. Also many other things my sister wouldn’t even tell us. She suggested to let the expert who is coming handle it.
Tomorrow should be interesting.
On the other paw, YSAS is home and not on a fire escape!
11:31 am on February 13th, 2012
T&G, we Mom says she worked with an Animal Communicator years ago, and also took a half-day course with her. We see from her website that she no longer takes new clients, but has a short list of others who she recommends.

11:44 am on February 13th, 2012
Melanie, Good luck with the home visit and the Friday evaluation. Our prayers will be with you.
Oley, Thanks for posting that link. McDonalds may just be yielding to public scrutiny, but it is a move in the right direction. Those crates are cruel and inhumane. Now if they would just start making McNuggets and McRibs into real food!
11:49 am on February 13th, 2012
Vegetarian!….snort!….Thanks a lot you guys. Now my friend says she is never eating meat again…grunt!…And this includes Bacon…sob!sob!sob!….(she’s said this before and it all worked out okay after some time had passed…sniffle!)
11:55 am on February 13th, 2012
Rio, Tell your friend that , altho Mom was vegetarian for awhile, she is o.k. With eating meat some days, as long as she knows where and how the animal was raised. If done humanely, it is much healthier for humans and much more humane for the animals.
The missing piece for her is fish and seafood. How do you find the best, freshest, not farm-raised fish and seafood when you live in a rural non-oceanside area like us?
11:58 am on February 13th, 2012
Yukon!….SiberH, what’s the latest news on the Yukon Quest race?…snort!snort!
12:07 pm on February 13th, 2012
Rio, I just arrived to post the latest info.
Allen Moore is 12 minutes ahead of Hugh Neff. They are resting at the last checkpoint before the finish line in Whitehorse. Lance Mackey is third in the race.
Further back down the trail, Hugh got penalized 30 minutes for losing his axe. He has already done that time.
12:09 pm on February 13th, 2012
SiberH!….Keep me posted!…Wooooo!…Its going to be a close finish I betcha!…heh!
12:13 pm on February 13th, 2012
You guys want to see YSAS in a short 13 minute play being a conspirator theorist??
12:14 pm on February 13th, 2012
Rio, I will keep you posted. Hugh Neff is running with fewer dogs than Allen Moore.
I think they have to rest 8 hours at this last checkpoint.
12:15 pm on February 13th, 2012
Melanie, YES!!!
12:17 pm on February 13th, 2012
Tracking!…The live tracker actually shows those guys in the correct order….snort!….Maybe we can trust it to show the finish today….heh!
12:19 pm on February 13th, 2012
Clarkson!…YES!YES!…snort!snort!
12:30 pm on February 13th, 2012
Yark! I may have been wrong. Hugh Neff will have to do his 30 minute penalty at this last checkpoint, so it looks as if Allen will win.
12:35 pm on February 13th, 2012
SiberH!…I wouldn’t count Mackey out of it yet…heh!…Bummer about Hugh Neff losing his ax…grunt!
12:39 pm on February 13th, 2012
It’s “Dogma Afternoon” by Kate McCamy. Around 13 minutes long. Done last year.
Lot of swearing just so you know!

Can someone post the YouTube video of Denver the guilty dog? Both mom and I love it, and we also love the background music.
It make us laugh, which is always a good thing.
1:04 pm on February 13th, 2012
We forgot to say please. Mom is big on manners.
1:06 pm on February 13th, 2012
Bear looking into the hole asking:

Siber-H, are you in there?
1:07 pm on February 13th, 2012
Swearing!…I love swearing!…heh!…I may have to wait for my friend to come home and watch it with her…sniff!…Lets just see how this afternoon goes…chuffle!

Wolfie: Here is Denver: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8ISzf2pryI&feature=fvsr
1:16 pm on February 13th, 2012
Melanie, YSAS is excellent in it!! The STAR!! We have never before gotten to see that much of him in one video. We also liked the play.
Rio, You will love it!
Masquers, That is funny! I want my backyard to look just like that.
1:30 pm on February 13th, 2012
HA HA HA! Masquers, excellent picture of Bear in Siber’s yard.
1:33 pm on February 13th, 2012
Where is Macy?
1:34 pm on February 13th, 2012
Melanie: Dogma Afternoon. That was EXCELLENT!!! YSAS…We didn’t recognize him…the mark of a truly great actor. Bryan Cranston look out!
Thank Dog he will be there to offer assistance and moral support for Dan’s home visit tomorrow.
Barb & Oley: Monsanto is evil. They have put the small farmers out of business through threats and lawsuits. Now we are forced to eat their chemically altered “fake food”. Most are oblivious to what’s going on behind the scenes, though books and films are beginning to raise public awareness.
B: Even though we knew you were kidding, your question momentarily startled us. Sarah Vaughn…who indeed…one of the great singers of her generation.
Prayers for the safe return of Whistler to Iditarod Musher Silvia Furlwangler very soon.
1:38 pm on February 13th, 2012
BSD, YSAS will not be home tomorrow. It is our Mechanical Engineer Nephew who will be here.
Tomorrow YSAS will start a 3 day extra gig on “Smash”. They were looking for Irish camera crew actors. Can’t get more Irish looking than YSAS.
1:57 pm on February 13th, 2012
Wolfie, I think Macy’s mom must be busy at her job of taking orders for Valentine’s Day flowers.
1:58 pm on February 13th, 2012
SH: What is the logic behind the rule that a musher gets penalized for losing an axe?
2:01 pm on February 13th, 2012
I believe that I read that Monsanto would go to neighboring farms and put weed killer on their plants to see if their seeds had gotten to there. If the plants died, the farmers were out of money, because they couldn’t prove that it was Monsanto that did it. If their plants lived they were out of money, because Monsanto would sue them.
Jeez Louise.
Moving furniture. Yuck.
Oh, and thanks for enjoying YSAS. In the same short play festival he was someone else in a different play and people didn’t realize that he was playing both parts.
2:12 pm on February 13th, 2012
B.Stover: There are mandatory items that all the mushers must carry.
The hand ax must be 22 inches long.
2:14 pm on February 13th, 2012
Whew, took me a while but I found the list. From the Yukon Quest website.
1. Proper cold weather sleeping bag.
2. Hand ax with an overall length of at least twenty-two (22) inches/56 centimeters.
3. One pair of snowshoes with bindings, with an area of approximately two hundred and fifty
(250) square inches/1612 square centimeters each.
4. Veterinary records (loss will incur a five hundred dollar ($500) fine.) The veterinary book
must be returned to a Race Judge upon completion of the race or when withdrawing for any
reason.
5. Any promotional material that YQI has asked the driver to carry to Fairbanks/Whitehorse. YQI
may require 1 or 2 banners of up to 400 square inches (2580 square centimeters) be
displayed on the sled as directed.
6. Functional cooker
2:16 pm on February 13th, 2012
got moderated. See the change in number 3. 🙂

Interesting. Thanks Melanie.
2:25 pm on February 13th, 2012
Mom won’t let us watch YSAS video until she is home.
2:35 pm on February 13th, 2012
Stover, Those mandatory items are to hopefully ensure the Musher’s survival in case of bad storms or getting lost. No mushers have died yet in long distance sled dog racing, but they have gotten lost and/or lived through fierce storms.

There is a fascinating article in today’s NY Times concerning the history of the Iditarod, the original race to Nome (to deliver the medicine) and the descendant of one of the original dogs that is competing in Westminster. Parts of it are sort of sad, but very interesting. Link is below.
Wookie

Thanks SH.
3:10 pm on February 13th, 2012
Interesting link on the history of Iditarod…Thanks Wookie!
Melanie: Oh…you meant YSAS is home, as in his place in N.Y.
Hope Jesse is feeling better for tomorrow.
Silly Moderator: Gotta have your Snowshows!
O.Howlers: I do believe Kat is determined to out-wait you on this one! She doesn’t understand why you are putting her in the krate whenever you are not home, since she has never made a mess in the house, only in the dreaded krate.
3:12 pm on February 13th, 2012
P.S. Kat says she’s not a baby anymore. She runs with the big dogs now.
3:16 pm on February 13th, 2012
Thanks Wookie, Togo will always be one of my heroes.
Husky Rescue here got a young guy in that they named, Togo, after the first Togo. He found a forever home very quickly and his new family kept his name.
3:18 pm on February 13th, 2012
Wookie, thanks for posting. We were not aware of Togo’s story, and of course very much aware of Balto’s fame. The saddest part is how all those poor guys were treated thru the rest of their lives.
3:35 pm on February 13th, 2012
Bear, did Kat tell you that?
3:46 pm on February 13th, 2012
Wookie: I will definitely be reading “The Cruelest Miles”. The NY Times article sounds like the start of a fascinating book about this great race with the serum to Nome.
AJ could well be the recipient of the famed Seppala Award for Extraordinary Care of his dogs. At least we hope so.
This is another team to add to the Iditarod Watch List: Frank Wright and Winnie aka Huskavarna’s Destined to Win.
Hope I have my facts straight. Siber and Wookie can set me straight if I don’t.
3:59 pm on February 13th, 2012
O.Howlers: Kat is sending a very strong message. She seems to see the krate as a punishment.
4:04 pm on February 13th, 2012
Masquers, Winnie is going to be in the Westminister Dog Show, not the Iditarod. I’m sure she would rather do the Iditarod. I would!
4:10 pm on February 13th, 2012
Liked the video, Melanie. I am glad to hear that he may show up in Smash. Watched the first show and thought it was excellent. Does MacKey sing or dance in addition to acting?
We had heard of Monsanto suing small farmers for “cross contaminating” their fields, effectively driving them out of business.
4:28 pm on February 13th, 2012
O.Howlers: A possible solution may be to leave her with the others for brief stretches of time when you are close to the house. At least until you are confident she can handle it. Just because she thinks she’s a grown-up doesn’t mean proper supervision is not required.
4:31 pm on February 13th, 2012
Oley: What about a Nanny Cam?
5:17 pm on February 13th, 2012
Howlers & Bear – We think we heard Kat wonder why she’s the only one in a crate.
OMD 11-23-63 is good.
5:28 pm on February 13th, 2012
Bluecat, We talked about that book so much that Rio was ready to put a stranglehold on us!
Just finishing up Bury the Lead. LOVE David Rosenfelt!
5:30 pm on February 13th, 2012
Bear, she has been out long stretches with us, and Mom & Pop not around. But Pop thinks their work day is long enough for the Pipsqueak to find trouble. Mom decided she will let her out, and have the person who lets her out midday just check up on her instead. We don’t know why that is necessary when she has us three katsitters. What is a nannycam?
Today, she kept her krate dry all day! She had no bed in there, so we think that was better for her. Mom says she will start giving her run of the house for short stretches, with us there and not Mom and Pop there.
Bluecat, that book is hard to put down, isn’t it? Glad you’re enjoying it.
5:37 pm on February 13th, 2012
Siber: Obviously, I’d best do some back-tracking and go to Wookie’s link again…had a feeling something wasn’t quite right 🙂 Looking forward, though, to seeing her in the Siberian class of the Westminister Dog Show.
5:45 pm on February 13th, 2012
Hey Bluecat! Kat is really good at telepathic communication. She is even sending messages to us kats now.
Oley, She is twirling, twirling……

Today was such incredible fun! A priest friend from Buffalo came to visit, bringing 4 nuns from India. They rolled in the snow, made snow angels, hiked, slid down hills, and watched everything the skiers and snow boarders did. They also went swimming in our outdoor pool. I said come back and next time I will get you equipment and a ski lesson on the bunny hill. That requires a few hours to do.
6:43 pm on February 13th, 2012
Just stopping by…
Rebecca: Received your package today. Thanks so much!
Belle Starr: How did you know my lips were chapped? And that I love fudge brownies. I’m smacking my lips together right now. YUM! I’m not sure if the credit card will still be here on your next blur to New York…..
6:50 pm on February 13th, 2012
Belle Starr: I’m flipping through the calendar, and I noticed your birthday is February 7th. My older brother shares the same birthday as you. My birthday is in February too! So, we are all Aquarians!
7:57 pm on February 13th, 2012
Rose, I hope your birthday is not when I’m going away on my vacation!!
Good boy, Whistler. Good Boy!
Hmmm, YSAS has a beautiful voice. More of a lyrical Irish dude, not Broadway. Dance? Yes, he can dance, but has back problems and so doesn’t.
The meeting with the town’s Assessment Committee went well. They agree that our house does not have an invisible wing!
Watching Topsy-Turvy!
8:09 pm on February 13th, 2012
Westminster is on.
8:11 pm on February 13th, 2012
WESTMINSTER!!! Yippee!
(we actually will probably just get to watch the first hour tonight, and then catch it on USA tomorrow during the daytime.)
Very good news about Whistler. Whew!
So – who is everyone cheering for in the Hound Group?
8:17 pm on February 13th, 2012
Melanie: I loved YSAS in Dogma Afternoon. Sometimes I get to feeling down like that character and then some little thing reminds me of the joy of life and all is well. Great acting! I liked the script because after making me anxious there were the laughs to diffuse some of the tension and at the end YSAS got the girl! 😉
Wookie and Masquers: Thanks for the links to early history of the Iditarod, Denver the guilty dog and Silvia getting Whistler back.
8:34 pm on February 13th, 2012
Hey – the Harrier Hound is named CHET!
8:40 pm on February 13th, 2012
Look – its REDBONE! What a beautiful dog. The description says he has “a sweet, pleasing voice”
8:42 pm on February 13th, 2012
I love all of the dogs and can never choose one.
8:45 pm on February 13th, 2012
I root for the otter hounds. A friend of mine breeds them and they are big huggy bears. They said tonight there are only about 1000 of them left. I don’t know if that’s true, I’ll check with my friend tomorrow. I do know he wants to breed them to keep the line going.
8:46 pm on February 13th, 2012
Nice hound group. The wire hair dachshund was adorable, the wolfhound and the ibizan were elegant.
Here comes the cut.

And the winner is the Wire Hair !!!

Tomorrow is Dan’s day!

MP’sM – we like Otterhounds too. And we love the PBGV’s. Guess we tend to like the cuddly, cute looking dogs.
Mama is going back to painting her pots. Talk to you all tomorrow.

Just finished catching up on the blog. This all day every day working is cutting into my fun time. Darn it all. I better go get ready for bed because I am tired already.
good luck on the visit Melanie. We had to go through that when Mom came out of rehab in 2008. We have a lot of new railings and grab bars and a ‘transfer seat’ for the tub and a porta-potty in Mom’s bedroom. And no little rugs on the floor anymore.
9:25 pm on February 13th, 2012
Rio, Maltese, high maintenance, hah! They should meet my family. A buzz cut and groomer every 2 weeks for a shampoo and Wonderfluff. No problem, for them at least.
9:25 pm on February 13th, 2012
Mollypop’s Mom: Sounds like a real fun day with the nuns from India playing in the snow.
Melanie: Good luck tomorrow with the physio.
Huh? I don’t get the Westminster…until Thursday.
Goodnight to all, I’m off to read a bit before bed.

The judges love the Pekingese for some reason. This guy, Malikai won last year didn’t he? We thought Walter the Pug was very nice looking. I barked and leaped at the tv when some of the dogs pranced around, but not for the Pek, cuz I didn’t think he was a real dog.
Westminster was on for 1 hour on USA, and is on for 2 hours on CNN. Weird!

Hey, y’all! Dad came home from duty pretty steamed! His Season from Hell has gotten even worser today. Two of his players went on a ski trip, and were caught with some funny cigarettes just after arriving — bye-bye players. Then one of his starters left for winter break (which doesn’t start until Saturday!) today and didn’t even tell Dad — even though he had him for class this morning! Dad can’t wait until the next two games — and his season! — are over. At least there’s no chance his agony will be prolonged with any post-season folderol!!!

T&G loved the comment about your cousin the Royal at Westminster. That he would have your family trained in no time. I wonder how they knew that!!! Your Sporting Friend Wookie

Wookie, Your group is on tomorrow night. Good show tonight. That Mary Carillo is not as knowledgeable about dogs as the other commentator. Now if were a tennis match….
Oh well, good night all.

Night all, I have put mom to bed so she can rest up for the flower day from h-e-l-l-o. “What, you didn’t realize that Valentine’s Day was on the 14th this year? So that explains why you are just now ordering and being upset that all the best containers are sold out!”
