Good Idea?

“Looks like some Korean scientists have used cloning techniques to make a beagle – name of Tegon – that glows under ultraviolet light when a certain drug is added to her food,” Spence says. “The lead researcher – Byeong-Chun Lee – says this can be a step toward finding cures for some human diseases, dogs and humans having 268 diseases in common. He also seems to say that genes that trigger fatal human diseases can be introduced with or substituted for the substance that causes the glow. What do we think of this?”

“I’m fine with it,” says Admin. “As long as Tegon gave informed consent.”

Good morning, y’all! I’m not sure I would want to glow in the dark. Although, I guess it would come in handy when I’m out walking at night, me being black and all. But Dad keeps a pretty good eye out for cars, so that hasn’t been a problem so far.

    Morning ALL! I am HAPPY!

I have never wanted to glow in the dark, but I have thought of having chlorophyl in my hair. I would have luscious green hair that creates energy for me!

Not bad! Good for the environment, less use of resources . . .

I wonder what a Pack of Green Newfoundlands would be like? snicker

Dawson: Did Ruby Jo get her package yet? Mom’s getting a little worried, because she sent a birthday gift to her brother on Monday, and it got all the way to Washington (state) on Wednesday. It’s been a week for Ruby Jo’s package — is it there yet???

Jasper: Are you all settled in your new house with your new friend? Does she take good care of you when your mom is gone?

Melanie: All packed and ready to go? I hope you have a great time, and that YSAS has a great time in his play, too!

    Greetings Everyone!

No dog should glow in the dark. They are all beautiful as they are! (Especially the hnadsome Plunderer pack)

I’n very grumpy…There was a brief article in the NY Daily News yesterday featuring things to do and places to go, and I felt very proud when I read about “Hamlet.” The picture of McKey and his co-star was prominently feature in color! I’ve been trying to get the link since 8:45 this morning, but to no avail. I won’t stop until I find it, and then I’ll post the link…

Bad storms in Westchester last night. Knocked out our cable, so no TV or computer.

Barb is making preps for heading to Lake Geneva. Beautiful day here, but warm. Jordan the vet tech is coming to play with me and keep an eye on the place, cuz Barb says 9 hours is too long for me to be alone.

    Melanie, have a wonderful time.

Have a great day eveyone, talk to you tomorrow.

Mom decided not to take the nasty sounding antibiotic yet. She found a 10-day treatment of acidophilus et al. that has 100 billion cultures in it. If this doesn’t do the trick then in 10 days poor Mom will have no choice.

She’s listening to Pillars of the Earth right now, which she is really enjoying, but the characters keep “hissing” things that Mom doesn’t think they should. Can you “hiss” a sentence that doesn’t even have an “s” in it?

Theater!… I’m so jealous of Melanie going to NYC….snort!… I would love to see Clarkson in a play even if it is in a parking lot…heh!…It would still be very thrilling. Looks like he does some sword play in this one from the photos Molly linked to…gah!…Be careful McKey! You still have to sign that photo for me!…wheeze!

House!…Well, we just got back from my other house. Those guys did some final cleaning and weed spraying and watering and photo taking and packing up of the very last items…grunt! …Now she is going to start unpacking some of her stuff and organize our bedroom…heh!…She said she will make room for my bed and all my toys too…sniff!…Later this afternoon one of the renters will start moving in. We will need to go over with the keys and the legal papers. She says she will have a big fat check in her hands when we leave there!….Woooooo! Wheeeeee! …Lets see we need a new computer, a DVR, beef jerky treats, more baseball toys just to name a few things at the top of my list….chorkel!

  19. Kirby T. Penworthy
    1:04 pm on July 30th, 2011

Now, Rio, don’t start getting too far down that list! Chances are at least part of that check is due to a nice big damage deposit that has to be saved for if/when the renters move back out. Or else you may have to pawn some of those baseball toys!!!

  24. Kirby T. Penworthy
    1:46 pm on July 30th, 2011

Bee: It could very well be that Ken Follett is using it in that sense. Mom’s dictionary doesn’t have that definition — just the “sound like that of a snake” etc. She just keeps remembering her English teacher saying that someone couldn’t “hiss” something that didn’t have an “s” in it: “Don’t do that!” he hissed. Thanks, that’ll certainly make it easier for Mom to listen to the rest of the book — it has 32 CDs, and Mom is on number 22! — knowing the Old English definition, which makes sense because the book is set in England during the middle ages. Thinking of it the other way was driving Mom nuts!!! (Knowing her, she was probably talking back to the CD player!)

Mom’s thinking she would like to get a laptop. I wish she would! Right now we have a desktop model in the office. Sometimes when everyone is in the living room watching a show on tv, Mom doesn’t feel like coming in here to put the computer on for me. That makes it extremely frustrating for me, because I would like to get on here to talk to my friends!!!

  26. B.Stover

Siber-H: I’m watching the 2010 Iditarod documentary to help inspire me for writing; I need to put together a brief bio for our dogumentary application. Even though he’s not quite YSAS in the acting department, AJ has a couple of speaking parts. 🙂

Macy: That’s the ticket! (Now where did that expression come from….)

  32. Kirby T. Penworthy
    2:16 pm on July 30th, 2011

Bee: Yes, the book is about the building of a cathedral. Mom listened to Ken Follett’s new book, Fall of Giants, and really enjoyed it, but it’s the first of a trilogy and the second one won’t be out for awhile. So someone at work suggested she try Pillars. She thought it sounded a little dry, but since she enjoyed the other one so much, she thought she’d give it a try. She’s actually finding it pretty fascinating. In fact, it’s one of those books that makes Mom think about the characters and what they’re going to do next even when she’s not listening to it. She thinks that’s a sign that the book is really grabbing her interest! Since Mom usually reads “dead body books” — if there isn’t a dead body on the cover, Mom doesn’t read it! — it’s nice on occasion to try something a little different.

  35. Kirby T. Penworthy
    2:54 pm on July 30th, 2011

Bee: Mom started reading it but was put off by his mention of The French Lieutenant’s Woman. She had to read that book in college and HATED IT! She has said so on more than one occasion. It’s been so long since she read it, though, that I doubt she could even explain why she hated it. She just did.

She did manage to get through the rest of the article, but with the mention of TFLW still in her brain, she didn’t grasp very much of what the author was saying. Maybe she’ll try again later!

Rebecca, I don’t have the 2010 Iditarod documentary yet. The Iditarod people will probably offer it to me free when I renew my Iditarod insider subscription. My mom slipped up and didn’t order it for me when it first came out.
AJ is also in at least two of those Insider videos.
I think both you and AJ are great in front of a camera and we all know you are a good writer, so I think Snowhook has a good chance for the dogumentary.

Siber-H: The documentaries that Iditarod Insider does for each year’s race is the closest thing we get to game film. We recently got the 2011 Iditarod; it shows AJ leaving the starting line in Willow.

  38. B.Stover
    3:26 pm on July 30th, 2011

Kirby: The author of the article didn’t like French Lt. Woman. I really enjoyed that novel and the movie version. Perhaps you should give it another try. (And then let me know which “ending” of the novel you like.)

  39. Kirby T. Penworthy
    3:37 pm on July 30th, 2011

Bee: But he liked it to begin with — it was only upon later reflection that he decided he wasn’t as enamored with it. Mom hated it from the get-go. As for the movie version, she didn’t even give it a try. Hated the book too much. Again, I don’t know why. She just did. She read it her first year of college, which would have made her 17, just like the author of the article, but she couldn’t stand it from page 1! Maybe if she tries it again from a more mature (!) viewpoint she’ll feel differently about it. But then again, she has to read Spence’s new book, and all the other new books in her pile. We’ll see!

I must admit, she was a bit daunted by the list you put up for those who were interested in your class. She’s never read Frankenstein or any of the other books on the list. She’s thinking about following along with everyone else. Then again, there’s Spence’s new book, and all the other new books in her pile. Of course, she would like to improve her mind — there’s always room for improvement! We’ll see!

  40. Kirby T. Penworthy
    3:39 pm on July 30th, 2011

Rebecca: Thanks for the “handsome” remark! By the way, Mom says she’s thinking about doing an Iditarod storytime for the kids at the library. She could do it at the beginning, then put a map up for the kids to follow along as the race progresses. I think it could be interesting.

Kirby, I don’t know if this will help your mom or not, but on the Iditarod’s website they have all kinds of information for teachers. The Iditarod picks a teacher and then sends him/her out on the trail every year during the race.
Just click on For Teachers at the top of the Iditarod’s home page and there are all kinds of resources for teachers to use. On the right side of the page, you will see Zuma’s Paw Prints listed under resources. Zuma and her friends are canine reporters.

Whee! What a morning! My mom’s sister and their mom came to visit me. Imagine my surprise (heh!) when that baby gate comes out and off they go! Lunch at Carrabbas or some such…and I get kibble and a baby gate. So I barked a little bit to tell them what I thought about that deal.

I am getting quite comfortable in my new place. Mom takes me for walks all the time now because when she puts me out on my lead I just stand there, but if she walks me herself on the leash, I pee and poo all over. I’ve got this situation handled, big time! (Wonder the history of that expression?)

Otherwise, we are staying inside in our wonderfully cool new home and enjoying it alot immensely! (Heh!)

  49. B.Stover
    5:27 pm on July 30th, 2011

There is no need to feel intimidated. Think of the books as mysteries: You’re trying to find the motivations behind the actions that make up the stories. For example, Frankenstein’s motivations are curiosity and fear. The creature’s are rejection and revenge. Then the reader makes judgments.

I can’t believe they pulled Ubaldo out of this game like they did. I suppose they expect the team to just go on tonight and win the game…Fat Chance, I’m guessing.

Wolfie, I am so sorry. No, you were not stupid. Your family was just trying their best and loving the boys. I know you did everything you could. I pray that someday the boys will know that they are loved and return that love.

    OH! NO!

I am so sorry that your picher Ubaldo was traded. And in the middle of the game too! Sheesh.
Reminds me of 2008 when the Twins traded Johan Santana to the Mets.
My sympathy goes out to all the Rockies fans.

    Dear Wolfie.
How sad that the boys have still not learned their life lesson. I expect that you will have a hard time believing in them again. Even though your heart tells you to, you head is going to have a hard time trusting.

They sound so very smart that it is just sad.

Wolfie. We are so sorry your boys are so out of control. Your family gives them love and support and they seem unable to return that love and trust. Prayers and thoughts with you all. Give your Mom an extra cuddle tonight. Your friend Wookie

Rio – shame on you to be rude to Volfie! Ve think is time to put pepper on your paws vhen you don’t be good. Or better, ve vill sign you up to valk a MARATHON! In August! In desert! Vith no baseball broadcast!

Volfie – ve are so sorry to hear is bad news. Is true so many times addicts are best actors and have no conscience. Please let your heart heal – is not vhat you do or do not do. Addicts only take, and only lie.

B.Stover – ve do not understand how you say Frankenstein is mystery. No -is not true. Mystery has dead body, and no von knows who done it. Then again, ve do admit that popularity of tv shows like “Real Housevives” and “Big Brother” is real mystery to us.

Pepper-paws!… Wolfie’s the one who said it. I was just agreeing with him doubly, maybe triply or even fourthly about it…grunt! …Anyone who believes a drug addict is out of their cotton pickin’ mind and anyone who believes two drug addicts is beyond help…wheeze!….Wolfie’s the one I feel sorry for.….grump!

Sigh – is true Rio. Addicts can sometimes resist their addiction, but only when they truly vant to be better.

Volfie – is not fair for you to have such troubles. But is also true life is not fair.
And is also true that believing and trusting, even vhen you know you should not….that is a kind of addiction too. Could be that you need to deal vith your addiction too.
Please know that Natasha says these things vith love and concern. And ve vill keep saying prayers for your strength.

I was wrong earlier. The Rockies are going to win…good for them.

Wolfie, Hugs, because I know you feel sad, but don’t blame yourself. From your reading your posts over time, the boys had a rough start in life that is still working against them.

    Oh No!
    Wolfie: My sincere sympathies.

TMG: Wha? Who? Why? I can skin a squirrel you know and I’m willing to learn how to skin a goat to get my ARC! I will find you. I know someone whose specialty is finding missing persons, or elephants or even goats!

And where’s all my other winnings?!!? I have not received one single solitary auction item. Not even Kirby’s Blankie and Book that was being sent to a U.S. address, like the Spanish Fan.(Rio’s friend probably packed that away by accident in the move and I’ll never get it. Can’t blame the goats for that one.)

Well, since we get our mail by dog sled up here, I’ll give it one more week. Sure hope I don’t get any extortionist letters from Canadian Customs. Those guys are ruthless. They once held my grandmother’s rocking chair for ransom.

One week, TMG! You better barf that ARC up in pristine condition or your hide is mine!

Wolfie’s mom: I am sorry to hear that both body and heart are hurting after the long week. Supidity?—No, I don’t think so. I can’t speak from experience, but I believe being a mother can put blinders around the eyes of the heart, that doesn’t make you wrong, stupid or foolish. The fight you’ve fought for your boys is because of love and hope, not stupidity.

Wolfie: I echo Wookie—give your mom extra attention tonight.

Dawson: No way would I dare come between you and your winnings.

It is so hot and dry here that a tropical storm came ashore last night and disappeared in less than 2 hours. They said that the dry hot air just sucked all the momentum out of the storm. Great! Now they are saying that every day this week will be over 105. Mom is not leaving the house until November.

Wolfie and Mary, sometimes we wish for something to be right so hard that we believe it will happen. That’s not stupidity, that’s human nature. Some of us are glass half full persons no matter what. We are very lucky that no one in our extended family has had an addiction like your boys. However, the son of a very close family friend is fighting that fight. He may lose his wife and children because of it. It is very sad.

We know that you wish you could fight the fight for your boys, but this battle is theirs. You have to protect yourself. They are adults now and have to face the consequences for their actions. We all love you and are here for you. Vent, cry or scream, we will listen and cry with you. Dog knows, we can sure offer LOTS of advice!!

Glad you weren’t hurt in the accident.

I enjoyed reading a few days back, on AMTRAKS’s Twitter feed, the little snippet about Amtrak K9 units playing a key role, assisting in helping US rail passenger system travelers, get to their desired safely. These dogs and their well trained human handlers, really do deserve genuine thanks and traveler support. So, if you have hunted down yourself, a great value train ticket, good luck to you, but your AMTRAK train travel experience is, always, a serious “top collar” professional effort, from the experts, including some four legged members, behind the scenes, sniffing away, always on the “smellout” for issues!
