Go Snowhook!
As some of you know, the Iditarod – greatest dog sled race in the known universe – starts today. In Fairbanks, not Anchorage this time, due to poor snow conditions. “They could race here in our yard on Cape Cod if they’re looking for snow conditions,” Admin says. This blog and a lot of people here are big supporters of Snowhook Kennel up in Willow, run by a wonderfully humane couple named Justin (AJ) and Rebecca Savidis. We wish them all the luck in the world, and we’ll be following the race closely. There are ways to do that, but for now here are 2 links. A special highlight here will be overnight reports from Rebecca. And we’ll have pictures of the beautiful and brave members of the nation within, the stars of the show.

Morning all. We are here at the show, waiting for the doors to open and the crowds to descend.
Question: today is the Ceremonial Start? Is that taking place in Fairbanks too? We have had a lot going on around here and may have lost track. We thought Ceremonial was today in Willow, Official is Monday in Fairbanks? Would someone be kind enough to set us straight?

T&G, the Ceremonial start is in Anchorage, then they head out to Fairbanks for the Official start on Monday. Sunday is travel day.

B: a raven followed the team home from a run way back when. They are smart birds and know that a dog team equals food. SnowBella says that in no time at all they had their own murder of ravens (A group of ravens is called a raven.)

According to the Anchorage Dispatch, google Street view will be filming the start and part of the restart so people will be able to take to the trail on google maps. they don’t know when it will go live so it doesn’t sound like it will be up immediately.

Karen Ramstead is not racing, but she is judging, and her first assignment is at Tenana, the checkpoint sponsored in Dima and Cherokee’s name. By the way, Karen’s PCTs and her Aussie dog Bet are rooting for Philip Walters according to her Facebook page.

The sled Iditarod rider is Paula. She and her husband are from Chicago. She is a teacher and he is in some kind of ministerial work. They picked Justin specifically to bid on as they like that he had worked years with troubled youth. Paula is turning 60 this summer and retiring and this was a gift from her husband. They have been here all well. Paula uses the Insider for educational materials and classrooms pick mushers to follow during the race.. We met them at the vet checks and again at Mick and Jodi’s.

BooBear’s mom. I think you can go back on the live feed and watch earlier things. We missed the live start for AJ but was able to go back and see it on the live feed. We finally figured out how to tell what dog was who. If you can enlarge this photo till you can read what is on the red number tag you will see the name Clyde in silvery writing.
Once you know that the only thing you have to do is get the dog to stay quiet long enough to actually read it.

We cannot tell you how much we are loving the pictures and stories from Alaska. We are just so very happy that everyone there is so very happy. The videos are wonderful.
DDD – have another reindeer sausage for us!
And we LOVE Bernie’s Hawaiian shirt – that Rebecca, what a sense of humor.
Show is going okay. This is a first time here for us, so customers are not used to our booth. But we have gotten lots of compliments and been asked if we will come for the Christmas time show, so we take that as a good sign.
