Go Reuben!

“Do we know about this?” says Spence. “Stem-cell therapy for members of the nation within?”

“We do not,” says Admin.

“Here’s a story out of Detroit,” Spence says (hat tip – Candice Williams, The Detroit News). “It’s all about Reuben, a 9-year-old English springer spaniel with hip dysplasia and arthritis. He went to a clinic that does in-house stem-cell therapy – harvesting and injecting stem cells the same day. Treatment  started with light anesthesia and then the vet took about a tablespoon of fat from Reuben’s back. The fat is lasered, the cells get separated out, and are injected into the joints. The vet expects Reuben to be moving better 2 or 3 weeks. Cost – about two grand.”

They both look at me. “How are those hips, big guy?”

Hips? Those are what, exactly?

Here’s wishing B. a quick recovery.

Am I the first to post? Wow!

Zoe is on her way home, Bee is getting closer to some answers, and now all we need to do is get Macy’s mom to the doctor. All is well.

I’ve always liked the name Reuben. I like to eat them too. And I was born in Detroit, so I have connections to this post. Heh. But…I’m off to work.

Good Morning Barb and Maggie: No, it’s my third. 🙂 🙂 🙂 But it is the first by this couple who did everything but stand on their heads to make this happen and finally resigned themselves to not having kids…next thing you know…preggers! Yippee.

That is an interesting article. I’ll have to look in the Detroit News to see if I’m familiar with the clinic. One of my niece’s used to do volunteer work at a clinic here.

There is nothing wrong with Chet’s hips! Thank you very much for the wish for quick recovery. I’m feeling better.

    Good morning all.

That sounds great for Reuben. I have told our VET that the next thing that goes wrong with Dan, Dan is going to him. Good care, Fast care, and treats. Nothing like it.

Melanie: Your knee procedure is still on for tomorrow right?

Dawson: The lung specialist said that when the problem is fixed the collapsed portion of lung will….what’s the word for uncollapse? It will become inflated on its own. Also, yesterday I had 95% oxygen in my blood which is normal. The doctor said that my body is compensating for the collapsed lung. Isn’t the body amazing?

B&M: Did you like the movie Eat, Pray Love (I think that’s the title)? I didn’t like it that well…a bit long.

Bee, Barb actually did not watch the whole movie, Eat, Pray, Love. She turned it off when she was in the love stage. Julia Roberts did a good job, but the movie did sort of drag a bit.

Mom first read about the stem cell therapy for dogs in the monthly publication she subscribes to from the Cummings School of Vet Medicine. More clinics are starting to do this “in house” instead of sending the stem cells away to a lab. I think this treatment shows great promise for dogs with hip dysplasia and arthritis. Maybe the price of the treatment will come down, but, then again, maybe not. I wonder if they will every try this procedure on two-leggeds.

Macy? Is your mom going to the doctor?

    12:17 pm on January 13th, 2011

We are so glad that the “trend level” on this blog is going is a positive direction, for Zoe, Dan, Stover and Dawson too with the new grandchild. And Ruby is a terrific name, as we all know from The Tutor by you-know-who. All we need to do is to get Macy’s mom to take better care of herself and everything will be tip-top for awhile.

We dodged another bullet here in terms of snow. Only got about three inches or so. Dad did a great shoveling job, but others in the neighborhood didn’t, so grandpa is grounded for awhile, which is just fine because he can spend more time petting me. My back in bothering me again so I am not doing too much myself anyway, but I know it will get better. Mom is really busy with quilt guild stuff for the next couple of days (workshops put on by an out-of-twon speaker), so she isn’t around very much, but dad and grandpa will try to compensate. i’ll milk it for all its worth.

HI Zoe, Welcome back. You had us all excited for the last two days. Jeez. Now all you have to do is relax! ahahahahahahahahha.
Well I hope you are on the couch with a good book or some nice knitting and a Newf or two is holding you down. I think a Newf anchor would be quite effective myself.

Ruby Josephine, we are waiting for the news. Are you here yet kiddo? This is your GREATaunt Nancy asking.

Rio you are so difficult. I think your friend must be a saint. Alice agrees with me.

Snowing here. About 1 inch so far. Dawson’s father has a new treadmill. It was delivered today. The previous one was being annoyingly difficult about starting up.

Attention please – this blog has been taken over by Basil and Sage the Aristocats. You dogs are just ridiculous. If you were superior being like us Cats, you could jump up on whatever bed, sofa or refridgerator you wanted to. Whats more, WE don’t have to be so undignified to go out in the snow for personal business – we have humans trained to take care of those needs for us. And begging for food – why, thats just low class. If you act like you are doing them a favor by eating, they will give you all kinds of wonderful things. And everyone knows that Cats are better de-stressors than dogs…we PURR back…what do you do? Ooops – here comes Tupper….gotta run…literally

Hi Siber! Thanks for telling off those two rotten kats. They think that they just know so much. Sage says that he sure could do all those things…he just chooses not to. But since the one time he escaped into the snow, he totally panicked when his foot touched the snow, we don’t think he would be much good for getting to Nome.
    And Sam – eeewwwwww
Mama says she is going to be at the hospital with our friend Melanie tomorrow and will let you all know how things go. We love Melanie – she smells so wonderfully of big dogs. But we don’t like it when Mama smells like those dogs – she belongs to US!

    Welcome home, Zoe!

I think we ought to have a party to celebrate the Year of Rabbit, which begins on January 3!! We haven’t had a proper blow out since the puppy shower.

    Here is some information:
According to Chinese tradition, the Rabbit brings a year in which you can catch your breath and calm your nerves. It is a time for negotiation. Don’t try to force issues, because if you do you will ultimately fail. To gain the greatest benefits from this time, focus on home, family, security, diplomacy, and your relationships with women and children. Make it a goal to create a safe, peaceful lifestyle, so you will be able to calmly deal with any problem that may arise.

Not many people know that the Rabbit is the symbol of the Moon, while the Peacock is the symbol of the Sun, and that together, these two animal signs signify the start of day and night, represent the Yin and Yang of life. It is said that anyone making supplications for wishes to be fulfilled are certain to get what they want… and in the Year of the Rabbit, the wish-granting aspect of the Sun and the Moon combined is multiplied. The Moon is YIN and this is the Yin of Heaven, signifying magic. Thus on each of the Full Moon nights of this year, go out into your garden to gaze into the Full Moon and visualize plenty of Moon dust and Moon glow flowing into you, filling your whole body with bright white light and granting you fearlessness, love and courage. This will not only strengthen your inner “Chi” energy, it will also bring wisdom into your life.

    Everyone CONGRATULATIONS!!

    Lovely picture of dog!
Lovely picture of extended Newf family!
Lovely picture, in words, of new baby!
B.Stover: Glad you get to “get to” your friend.
    Macy: That is funny!

Ummm, if the Year of the Rabbit came on the 3rd. We’re late. AND Riö, how can it be New Age stuff if the Chinese have been doing this for centuries!

Anyhoo, Zoë is yelling for me to get off the computer. I have to get up at 5 am.

Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers, (you too, Linda the Lurker!)

Wolfie, Do we get to go out into our gardens on full moons after the Year of the Rabbit starts next month? We don’t have to do it yet do we? There is so much snow out there.

Does anyone read Billie Letts? She is not overly prolific but we like her books. Barb is reading Honk and Holler Opening Soon. So far it is really good. Takes place in Oklahoma, which is where Letts is from.

Good luch tomorrow, Melanie. Glad T & G’s mom is going to keep us informed.

Going to go read a little and say good night. Working every afternoon means no naps around here!

Wolfie – thanks for the info. Better chi from moon dust and a calmer year. What’s not to like?

“Are You Being Served” a favorite here, too. “AbFab” anyone? And always, always, “Brideshead Revisited”, the original.

Rio: Tell your friend we like cottage cheese with salt and pepper. We will have to try it with the green onions. It is good with fruit too.

Tomorrow is Melanie’s very good wonderful strong and feeling better day. We kats are sending kat prayers to her. (via the newf’s)

Abbie and I certainly sympathize with Sage and Basil. They tell the truth, and get dissed by the land bound pups. Of course Kats can jump up and down with ease. Well, I do it with ease (call it levitation) and Abbie does it carefully after putting one paw up and giving a little stretch.

We are also impressed that B&S are Aristokats. We never met any official Aristokats before. Of course all kats are unofficial aristokats. You dogs are just jealous.

good night everyone. Staff it going to get ready for bed early tonight. So much excitement today. And tomorrow we have to wait for T & G to report on Melanie.

Would you say that cottage cheese and green onions is a “good eat”?

    9:50 pm on January 13th, 2011

Rio, does your friend like the cottage cheese with Lawry’s seasoned salt? that’s my favourite.

Wolfie, i assume that’s just a slip of the tongue as the Year of the Rabbit doesn’t start til the third of NEXT month. I will definitely be taking myself out under the moonlight and making wishes, thank you for the information (Rio, you big grump!!)

Dawson – that picture is paint (gouache) (which washes out of the fur just fine) and collage: this one below is pencil and collage. Congratulations on Ruby’s arrival! How lovely.

Barb yes, that’s a cattle dog, a blue heeler called Resch. He lived up the road from my parent’s house and cadged food from the whole neighbourhood, including the bakery up at the shops – he’d go there every night when they started baking around midnight and they’d give him sausage rolls or a meat pie. A real operator, that dog.

BluKat!…AbFab is a favorite of hers…sniff!…I can’t get into it as much. I like The Vicar of Dibly the best. We have a lot of the videos which is sad because our VCR is broken…heh!

Mollie!…She says just be sure to chop the green onions into little pieces. She uses a lot of green onion, but the amount is up to your own taste…sniff!…Give it a try, it will revolutionize your experience with Cottage Cheese! (thats her talking not me!)…grunt! …She says “It is Good Eats!”…chorkel!

    Goodnight!…Stover and Staff!…snort!… Sleep tite like a kite….snorkel!

Liz!… If I could escape my yard I could be an operator too!… snort!… Now why oh why do you insist on painting these Aussie guys over me???…sniffle!… I could beg a meat pie off of anyone up here or down under…grunt!…Don’t get me started on sausage rolls!…yeep!

    10:02 pm on January 13th, 2011

I bet you could beg very effectively off anyone! Actually that guy isn’t an Aussie, he’s a little dog from Venice, he was waiting with the commuters at the boat-stop one morning, he was a very happy little guy going to the main island for the day for a big explore.

Liz!… I could do that too!…sniff!…I could wait with the commuters at the boatstop and try to be happy….grunt!… If we had a boatstop here, I could do it, I really could. I could beg at the same time too…heh!…Why don’t we have any boatstops here?…grump!

We are big fans of a lot of the Brit comedies as well. VIcar of Dibley is probably our favorite (Dawn French is just awesome and the jokes at the end of each episode are hilarious), but Are You Being Served is great as is Keeping Up Appearances. And of course Fawlty Towers. Although it is not a comedy per se, but actually a mystery, we are big fans of Heddy Wainthropp as well (Patricia Routledge starring in both Heddy and in Keeping up Appearances as Hyacinth Bucket). Pip, pip and Cheerio. Wookie

LizF: Give that Pug a millimeter and he takes thousands of Kilometers!

Thanks everyone. Upstairs right now, going downstairs to make a snack to take with me. After surgery people get all upset when you say, I can’t have crackers or toast. And then they take for ever getting a piece of rice bread that tastes like cardboard.
    Yuck!
So I’m fixing me a chicken and avocado sandwich on really good homemade gluten free bread!

Got my Kindle, got my iPod with healing music, ready to go!

    Thanks again

I hope I haven’t missed you, Melanie. Mom went out to dinner with some friends last night and didn’t turn the computer on for me. Please, please remember to put a big sign saying, “Not this knee!” on the good one! Good luck with your surgery — we’ll be waiting by the computer to hear the good news! (I hope this isn’t the same hospital that lost Dan!!!)
