Gift Ideas?

“Here’s a stat,” Bernie says. Bernie’s very interested in stats, whatever those are. Suzie isn’t interested at all. “When you’re writing a story, Bernie, it’s the human element you want.” Suzie’s a reporter for the Valley Tribune, in case I haven’t made that clear already. “If taxes go up, for example, you sit down with Jane and Joe Public at their kitchen table and find out how they’re going to manage, what they usually have for supper on week nights and what they’re going to be having now, that kind of thing.”

Jane and Joe Public? Don’t remember being in their kitchen, or in fact anything about them at all.

“The stat, according to an AP-Petside.com poll,” Bernie goes on,”is that 56% of dog owners – hate that concept – plan to give their dogs a gift this holiday season, as compared to 48% of cat people. Both those numbers seem low.” He turns to me. “Anything particular you want for Christmas?” he says. “Hey! Down, big guy!”

    Good Morning Chet!

(Aside to Bernie: The Pack and I are betting that Chet was a full size Slim Jim tree planted in the back yard.)

I understand giving the Pack gifts. In this way, gifts to the two leggeds might be saved from being opened, chewed and swallowed. Doesn’t even have to be food!

Good morning, Melanie. Hope all goes well today for Dan. We will be waiting to hear from you.

Siber, Glad your Dad is back at home where you can take care of him. Maybe you could share part of your big pile of toys with him.

Barb was thinking about getting one of those long skinny animals with no stuffing for my Christmas gift, but some of those have squeakers in them, and I have this obessive need to remove them within the first 5 minutes. They remind me of mousies.

Hey, that reminds me, I like Dawson’s new name – Miss Moosie. Cool beans!

We are supposed to get some snow/drizzle stuff later. Not too serious today.

B – There’s an interesting FREE book on Amazon for the Kindle: Watchlist by Jeffrey Deaver. The book is selling for $17.13.

Publishers Weekly says “Fans of the TV series 24 will best appreciate this two-part serial thriller written by 22 members of International Thriller Writers. Based on an idea by Deaver (The Broken Window), who provides the opening and closing chapters of each segment, the volume recounts the adventures of middle-aged Harold Middleton, an ex-U.S. military intelligence officer. In part one, The Chopin Manuscript, the discovery of a previously unknown Chopin score leads to murders, betrayals, and frantic efforts to stop a villain code-named Faust from carrying out a terrorist outrage. Part two, The Copper Bracelet, sets Middleton and his allies on the track of a Kashmiri planning the assassination of the U.S. secretary of state. While the contributors include many of the biggest names in the genre (Lee Child, Joseph Finder, Gayle Lynds, S.J. Rozan, etc.), the constraints of the form all but assure homogenized prose, thin characters, and stock action scenes atypical of their solo work.”

Not the greatest review, for sure, but I like the price – FREE

Wookie and I hosted 54 Quilting Ladies for lunch yesterday. Everyone had a great time. Wookie was just exhausted with his host duties and he wouldn’t let me get to the blog yesterday (serious tummies required from Mom to relax us.)

So, a belated but nonetheless sincere WOOOO HOOO! and WEEEEEEEEEEEEE! shout out for Jasper’s Mom. You did it, and we all know that you will do a fantastic job! Hope you will check in at least sometimes to say Hi and let us know you are doing well.

I am seriously impressed at you being able to host for 54 quilters. For one thing they are a noisy bunch when you get them together. The other thing is that I would just hide out. Alice Johnson would have to host the party. And she would! Alice’s motto is tails up.

The government is voting on tuition hikes in Engish universities that could triple tuition there: from $4,700 to $14,000. I’m assuming that’s per year since most English universities are on terms rather than semesters. Not fair.

Bernie, mom doesn’t like the term dog owners either. No one has really come up with the just right word yet…”guardian” lacks something. Mom uses the words mom and dad rather tongue-in-cheek because she believes dogs should never be substitute children. We are our own seperate, special, species and not little humans dressed up in cute furry suits.

Siber, We agree, Owner is not correct, although Barb would not hesitate to say she “owns” the chickens or goats. That is different. Chickens are not kindred souls, as dogs are (sorry Methodists, but they do have them). Barb also does not like dogs and kats being referred to as “fur children”. As you said, they are not little children dressed up in fur. They are their own unique beings, we are just not sure what the correct word should be. Maybe B. Stover has some ideas.

Hope Dan is doing well, we are thinking about him.

  42. B.Stover
    3:16 pm on December 9th, 2010

B&M: I think people, dogs and cats become best friends because each becomes part of the other. We can “read” one another’s thoughts, feelings. Sometimes dogs and cats are better at that than people are.

    Oh, I’ve been meaning to ask, C.Harris . . .
When it’s that cold up there, when it does snow, is it very light? We seem to get heavy snow when it’s between 20 to 34 degrees.

Now that I can “sorta” think again. . .
Was wondering about the comments of what to call close relationships between people and dogs and/or Kats.

I am very proud to be part of the Pack. I am a member (Alpha, but that is a given) of a wonderful, chaotic, inspirational, and miraculous inter-species group.

    Whew . . .

Kats have Packs. A little different than the Canine Pack, but Packs none the less.

I felt the same way when living with one dog and four Kats. Not sure the dog felt that way though . . . Those Kats just teased her mercilessly.

I was afraid she would spend the night in the hospital and get down and out herself…snorr!….I hope she will get a very restful sleep tonight…sigh!…I’m sure she needs it desperately, as do you my dear!…wheeze!…I hope both of you get a good nights sleep. Tomorrow is another day and it will be much better!…wooooooooo!

Rio: I can get the recipe for the gelatin mold for you. It was my mom’s and is really delicious. We always have it served with the meal. (I’ll look for the recipe tomorrow if you want it.) Greens…how about green beans steamed then with butter and garlic salt added after they’re done?

Stover!…Yes, she says she would love to have that mold recipe, that would be really great. Grandma hates green beans, so she is staying away from that green thing. Grandma does love her broccoli and cheese sauce though…sigh..I fear my friend will resort to that again unless something else comes up…grunt!…Of course there is always the Cottage Cheese Ala Green Onion too!…heh!

Melanie, I like your discription of the relationships between people and dogs/cats. Mom says that with huskies the human has to be alpha or the human will have problems BIG TIME. I let her think whatever works for her.

If it weren’t for this blog, I wouldn’t have any cat friends. I am happy that Chet has brought dogs and cats together and that I can have feline friends in siberspace. I value my cat friends here on Chet’s blog.

Melanie: Unlike in southern Alaska, the air up here is very, very dry so we usually get small flakes instead of big, fat, sloppy wet flakes. It can snow all day with only a couple of inches of accumulation. This is why we all went wild when it warmed up Thanksgiving week and our snow became “wet” and everyone was making snowmen. There were snowmen in front of houses and someone went overboard and made an entire field of snowmen.

Speaking of dry air…if anyone knows of the perfect moisturizer, clue me in. I’ve tried many in my life and am still searching. My hands and face get so dry it is painful. Humidity is around 20 to 30%.

There was a question on the internet a few days ago about how cold it had to be to snow. That didn’t interest me…I want to know how cold it has to be for it not to snow. When it is -50 and snowing, I think it is so unfair: it is like getting a double whammy of winter, it should be too cold to snow.

I remembered last night at -31 that I had a carton of ice cream outside in my “natural freezer.” I brought it in and it was froze solid as a brick. It took about an hour before I could scoop out a small amount to eat. I do occasionally make “snow ice cream”–a treat from my childhood. Has anyone else heard of it?

Mollypop! I’m on my way! hmmm All I have to do is get my mom’s credit card and the keys to her (my) truck. I could help your mom on the safety patrol.

CHarris: We used to make snow ice cream and put maple syrup on it. Yummy! The best moisturizer is Vaseline Petroleum Jelly–just put a little on hands and face.

SH: What is a La Nina winter?

Rio: I’ll put up the recipe tomorrow. Remind me if I forget.

    Fringe was really weird tonight.

C.Harris!… You are plain crazy!…snort!…But I do love hearing about your Arctic Adventures, especially when it involves ice cream!….grunt!… I couldn’t tell you how long it has been since she bought ice cream…grump!

Lotion!…We here in Colorado have a low humidity too…snort!…She uses Aveeno Lotion for her face and some other cheaper stuff for the other parts…heh!…I have no clue if it works or not, but I do love licking off the cheap stuff …wheeze!

The humidity is 22 percent here right now, but the temperature is 35 degrees.
It is 68 degrees where Chet and Bernie live and the humidity is 19 percent.
REALLY BIG difference in C.Harris’s temperatures and ours.

Rio’s humidity is 38 percent right now because he has a storm maybe appearing tomorrow. I just love weather.

Stover, a La Nina winter for us is caused by a cooler than normal pool of water out there in the Pacific Ocean. When that happens, the Southwest gets even less moisture than normal. That is most definately the case so far this year.
An El Nino winter for the Southwest is caused by a warmer than normal pool of water in the Pacific ocean. We get more moisture than normal when an El Nino is present. That means an above average snowfall for the mountains and all the beautiful cactus in Chet and Bernie’s desert blooming in the spring.

Wookie? About what time is dinner being served? I could stop in on my way up to Mollypop’s. You could intruduce me as an authentic NM Husky.

Debbie!…You are just making up most of this stuff, right?…heh!… There is no way one person could make all this food for a big Christmas dinner for more than 5 people!…grunt!…My friend is still trying to figure out if she wants Pillsbury croissant rolls or maybe pre-cut French bread from the store and if there’s time to toast it…cough! …I think she has totally forgotten all about dessert… wheeze!…Fun times ahead, I can just see it…heh!

She is almost ready to lift me up onto the big bed for the night where I will snuffle my way down under the covers to the end of the bed. All will be fine until I have to go out NOW!NOW!…heh!

Debbie LM: I’m coming for dinner too! Plus, can you make those recipes into a little cookbook I can bring home with me in case I need something to do someday. Just when you get a minute, could you do that.
Rio: Mom has a broccoli salad recipe – it’s just broccoli flowerets, bacon, onions and cheese, and with a mayonnaise dressing. You can make it a day ahead. Staff can give you the recipe (I think) if you would like it. Plus, I bet there are a million broccoli recipes on your computer.

Better late than never. We did get a chance to sneak a peak at Melanie’s post earlier and found out Dan did great!!! What a relief for Zoe and Melanie and the rest of the family. Hopefully, now he will be able to fully recover.

SiberH, we believe that you are an authentic Texas/NM Husky, sir! Musn’t forget your Texas roots.

Mollypop, glad you finally got the snow you were wanting. Did you read earlier that Mom thought she saw you and Sam getting gussied up for the holidays at PetsMart? And the poodle wasn’t getting that silly poodle cut either. Boy, did she look like your picture!

It looks like we may be getting another brother. Mom got contacted by the lady who runs the shelter where she volunteers. Seems a 78 year old man had to go into the hospital for surgery. He has a 10 year old cat. For now, a neighbor is taking care of the cat in his home, but if the gentleman doesn’t make it, the cat will need a home quickly (the man’s only relative doesn’t like cats) so we are on standby to be PlanB if needed. Hopefully, the man will recover fully and will be able to go home.

    Have a peaceful night everyone.
