Getting Somewhere

“Have you got an upstairs at your place?” Bernie asked Freddie Dancer, as he was slapping the cuffs on him. We’ve got plastic strip cuffs in the safe. The safe’s in the office, behind a picture of Niagara Falls. There are lots of pictures of waterfalls, rivers, and lakes at 99 Mesquite Road. Why, I’m not sure, but water is something that’s on Bernie’s mind a lot. “No upstairs here,” Bernie said. Then he cuffed Trimmer, and we laid both perps face down in the hall by the front door. Bernie was just giving Suzie a quick smile – Bernie’s smile being one of the nicest sights around, maybe even the very best – when someone knocked lightly on the door.

    Whew!

    Knocking "lightly" on the door?

Do you recognize who it is by the sound of the knock?

A light knock, not the "heavy knock" of these two cuffed perps (August 5). Hummmmmmm. Maybe it's Charlie coming for a camp-out. I've forgotten, has Charlie ever met Suzie? Has he ever seen Chet and Bernie in action?

I hope it's the detective they're friends with. He gives good treats.
