Getting in Shape

The dog turned in the other direction and ran off, trailing the leash.

“Fine! Suit yourself!”

LeAnne put her head down and kept going. She was a good runner, in fact, had once run the Soldier Half Marathon at Fort Benning in one thirty-three. So what was happening now? The stitch got worse; she couldn’t catch her breath, had nothing in her legs; legs that all once gave up completely and stopped even trying. Stopped even trying? That was shameful. LeAnne dropped down on the ground and started doing pushups, just to show her legs what her arms could do. Give me twenty-five! Give me thirty! That one counts negative! More!

LeAnne did three pushups, the last one unacceptable by any standard.

She stayed where she was, lying face down on the dirt track. The rain was falling harder. Her T-shirt clung to her bony back. She was losing, no doubt about that. She was still losing the war in Afghanistan. Maybe some politician would happen along and save her.

Then came the warm, moist, nubbly feeling on her face. The dog was back on the scene, appearing silently from wherever she’d gone, and once again licking the bad side. This time LeAnne didn’t stop her.

– from THE RIGHT SIDE.

Good morning! Spence is early today, or else everyone else is late.

Getting in shape – I’m trying. I asked for, and received, a Fitbit for my birthday. AHA says 10,000 steps a day is the goal to be on the healthy track. I missed the goal Thurs and Fri, but hit it yesterday. Not really all that hard to do.

Update 25 min ago from Buddy: “We got our update, I’ll tell y’all all about it when we get home. There will be lots of typing…but for now, suffice to say there wasn’t anything we didn’t already suspect. Which is to say, it isn’t great and “damned if you do and damned if you don’t” about sums it up.”

While I am gone, a new mama cat with 5 kittens just born this week arrived at the Hobbit Hotel (I don’t just cater to people). One of the kittens has cow markings! Ha, ha.

Hobbitz, thanks for the Buddy update. BTW, your new mama cat is the same color as our feral T cat who has been with us for 10 years at least. Very pretty ladies.

The Thou Shall Nots began awfully early today. What was it? Thou Shall Not oversleep on the sabbath. The second Thou Shall Not was ‘Thou Shall Not roll your eyes at Beau and then pretend to be asleep.’

Buddy posted a long Melanie report on Facebook which is complicated and disheartening. Perhaps he will post to the blog later. Here are some of his words: “…her next few months will be difficult, and I’m thinking that dancing will likely be out of the question, but she will be surrounded by love always here, and we’ll make things as comfortable and as stress-free as we possibly can and enjoy her while she’s still with us.
I know this is not the news any of us wanted. We wanted her to dodge just one more. Just one more bullet. Just one more of those nine lives. Just one more. But I think Melanie’s run her last race this time, and the best we can do is help her journey home to be an easy and comfortable one.
Everyone who knows and loves Melanie knows that the last 19 years, almost 20, have been the best I’ve had, and my life is so, so much better for having shared it with Melanie. I read somewhere that none of us knows how strong we are until we have no other choice. Melanie embodies this, no question, at least none in my mind, though she would disagree strenuously. She’s the wife who chose me, and the mother who chose Alena. Remember that when you think of her. Now, I have to come to grips with my time with Melanie, some day soon, sooner than any of us would want, coming to an end. At least, until later.”

In a few days if someone has Buddy’s email address, perhaps we can ask if there is anything the Plunderers can do to express our love and concern and help in someway.

Seems I only post bad news lately.

All right, we’re home (thanks Lena), and I have an actual keyboard in front of me.

Here’s the latest, and as you might have suspected, it is not a happy update.

Yes, Melanie has an aggressive infection, a bacteria that basically attaches to, well, anything more or less. This is perhaps what detached the heart valve, but of course, they wouldn’t know for sure unless they operated.

There are two options on the table.

First, surgery. Because of the colon problems as well, added to the infection, small arteries, small airway and difficulty with intubation, need to thin the blood, etc. etc., we’re starting out with a 50% chance of success with surgery. Add in complicating factors which adds another 75% chance of failure, and you’re already up to a 125% chance that she wouldn’t make it through surgery. Those aren’t terribly good odds. For clear reasons, Melanie does not want surgery.

Option 2: Lifelong antibiotics and a difficult balancing act between antibiotics, dialysis, other meds, and so forth. Obviously this won’t be easy either, and will give Melanie months with us, not years. Obviously, this is also not ideal, but this is the option melanie has chosen as the lesser of two evils. IV antibiotics administered along with dialysis, with another antibiotic pill daily, will help keep infection at bay, though of course it won’t clear it completely, and the chance of return is always present.

Next steps: we need to have either a new port installed, or a new PICC lr mid line before she comes home. They also need the infection put to rest and stabilized as best they can. Once that’s done, she will be transported home by ambulance. Clearly, her next few months will be difficult, and I’m thinking that dancing will likely be out of the question, but she will be surrounded by love always here, and we’ll make things as comfortable and as stress-free as we possibly can and enjoy her while she’s still with us.

I know this is not the news any of us wanted. We wanted her to dodge just one more. Just one more bullet. Just one more of those nine lives. Just one more. But I think Melanie’s run her last race this time, and the best we can do is help her journey home to be an easy and comfortable one.
