Getting Hip
“Here’s something I didn’t know,” says Admin.
“At last,” says Spence.
“I’m going to ignore that,” says Admin, although we all know he never really can. “I was aware that hip replacement surgery for big dogs has been going on for some time, but now they’re putting micro-hips into small dogs – 6 to 30 pounds, and even into cats.”
Whoa. What was this? Where are hips again, exactly?
“According to this article in the NYT, they’re even getting injured competitors back into agility contests,” Admin says.
“But the big thing is the dogs are now pain free, right?” says Spence.
“What are you saying?”
“Nothing.”
“I know I’m not a doctor – “
“No?”
” – but here’s my opinion. Hip replacements will work better in dogs than in people because each leg bears less of the total.”
Bears? Bears are now in this? These guys!

Bears? You make me laugh, Chet! Wonder how much that hip surgery costs.
Bears are a big subject around here (near Chicagoland), as well.
Bears vs Packers this weekend. We are not big football fans in this household, but it is hard to get away from that topic, on the news or out in public. Barb says she may even watch a bit of the game.
9:13 am on January 18th, 2011
We are watching for Mikie, the neighbor boy, who is coming over to plow the drive and unbury the suv. No excuses on working today.
9:15 am on January 18th, 2011
I probably don’t know what I’m talking about; but just to get the ball rolling, I question
the statement about the replacements working better in dogs because each leg bears less of the total. Was that not the case, also, with the hip that went bad.
9:27 am on January 18th, 2011
Chet, you have me laughing again. I think Spence and Admin will come to blows soon.
Good morning B&M and Tyb and everyone.
10:31 am on January 18th, 2011
I’d love to know what Mollypop said about antimatter at the party.
Rio: I like you comment: “waning toward bed time.” Very lyrical.
10:39 am on January 18th, 2011
Blows!… If Spencer and Admin come to blows who do you think will win?….heh!… I’d bet my bed bug money on Admin over Spencer in the third round…snort!
10:52 am on January 18th, 2011
Hey, Chet, I appreciate you putting out this canine medical information. The more knowledge people have, the better they can help their dogs and cats.
Barb, the hip surgery on dogs costs a lot. There are different ways of doing it with different costs, but it is all expensive.
Tyb, What you said makes sense to me.
Welcome Home, Dan!!

Mom’s best friend spent $20,000 on hip replacements for her dog Harry. Those big numbers make my head spin!
11:15 am on January 18th, 2011
Barb has some casual friends that are very wealthy. They took their Great Dane to the U. of WI. for chemo treatments several years ago. I think she went for a second round when it came back. Gained her about a year or a little more. Not close enought friends to ask what it cost, but it had to be a bundle. Wondered if it was worth it (quality of life), because the poor dog was sick for a lot of that time, and didn’t understand why.
Well, the car is unstuck, that is the good news. Bad news is that it appears the 4-wheel drive is not engaging. Have to drop it off and see how much this is going to cost. Always something!
11:50 am on January 18th, 2011
Rio: I never bet but I think that Admin would storm out of the room…perhaps without blows.
It’s raining here on top of the snow. Tonight it’s supposed to go down to 19 and snow which means a slippery mess tomorrow.
Good luck B&M.
Welcome home Dan.

I was wondering if “someone” was insinuating that “someone else” is a pain in the hip, or somewhere near that area.
12:55 pm on January 18th, 2011
Macy: Who?
1:00 pm on January 18th, 2011
Staff: I discuss the derivation of “waist” and “waste” on my blog today. The differences are interesting.
1:02 pm on January 18th, 2011
Dan!…Is Dan home??…snort!… I have not read any announcements saying so…..sniff!
MinPin!…Admin and Spencer are always getting on each other’s nerves but they couldn’t live without each other….heh!
2:38 pm on January 18th, 2011
Dan was due to come home today Rio. However, we haven’t heard from Melanie.
2:56 pm on January 18th, 2011
Not hearing from Melainie could mean that they’re in the process of breaking Dan out! I hope.
2:58 pm on January 18th, 2011
Waiting to hear about Dan…..
3:08 pm on January 18th, 2011
Rio: My boy agrees with you re Ricky G. & the G.Globes. He said the British people would not think anything was wrong with the humor.
A student at a High School in L.A. brought a gun to school & 2 students were shot. This was just on the noon news.

OK, you are the smartest bunch of people, dogs and kats that I know, so please put your thinking caps on. A friend of ours raises Shorthorn show cattle. She has a show cow named Snowflake’s Ice, who is all white. Last year Snowflake had an all white baby, and we collaborated on a name and came up with “Snowflake’s Frost” (Barb’s idea). Now she has had another one, a female, also all white. Any great ideas we can pass on?
3:28 pm on January 18th, 2011
Whitey!…snort!
3:30 pm on January 18th, 2011
Blizzard!….grunt!
3:38 pm on January 18th, 2011
Oooo – we love coming up with naming ideas – Tupper suggests Snowflake’s Dove. Gilly says Snowflake’s Waltz, Basil likes Snowflake’s Sugarplum Fairy, and Sage says who cares, its a COW!
(Sage has a bit of an attitude)
Our Mama talked to Melanie today. Even though we have a really bad snowstorm with periods of freezing rain, Dan was still planning on coming home. Melanie’s nephew was on his way down the mountain to go get him. Haven’t heard any news since this morning, but we will pass along any news that comes our way.
3:38 pm on January 18th, 2011
Snowflake’s Snow-white.
3:39 pm on January 18th, 2011
Snowflake’s Crystal.
3:40 pm on January 18th, 2011
Snowflake’s Snow-ball.
3:43 pm on January 18th, 2011
Egg White…sniff!
Snow White…gruffle!
Betty White…heh!
3:50 pm on January 18th, 2011
Rio – you are nothing if not the most romantic, poetic Pug ever.
3:53 pm on January 18th, 2011
Tupper!… Have you lost your Corgi mind?…grunt!
3:53 pm on January 18th, 2011
I know…I know…Snowflake’s Sugar on Snow!
3:55 pm on January 18th, 2011
Rio, We should have been more specific, although I do love Betty White and Whitey. You are making me laugh, as usual. It should follow suit with Snowflake, Ice and Frost. So Blizzard is good and so is Crystal.
Sage and Rio should hit it off.
3:59 pm on January 18th, 2011
Sage here – do you really expect me to get along with a pug who doesn’t even know sarcasm when he hears it? Sheesh….dogs….
4:08 pm on January 18th, 2011
Grump!….Why does a cow need two names?….snuff! …I bet they don’t come if you call them by name anyways….gruffle !
4:10 pm on January 18th, 2011
Sage, We were dishing out a little sarcasm, too. But you both do have attitude.
4:15 pm on January 18th, 2011
Barb and Maggie – don’t pay any attention to that supercilious kat – he thinks he just knows so much, but he yaks up fur balls just like all the others.
4:16 pm on January 18th, 2011
Rio, These are “highfalutin” cows. They are registered, just like you probably are. Do you have a registered name and a call name?
We just thought this might be a fun project on a cold, snowy afternoon. And you are a creative bunch.
4:19 pm on January 18th, 2011
Snowflake’s Sparkle?
4:23 pm on January 18th, 2011
Dan is home! I’m exhausted from pain meds and the low going through.
Will read and write tomorrow.
From Chet’s posting . . . I told you that the next time anything goes wrong with Dan I’m taking him to the Vet’s!
4:42 pm on January 18th, 2011
Wolfie, Thanks, that’s a good one.
Melanie, Glad Dan is home. See you tomorrow! Rest, rest, rest!
5:01 pm on January 18th, 2011
I think I like Wolfie’s suggestion best.
Hi Melanie. Saw hi to Dan for us.
5:03 pm on January 18th, 2011
I am not going to say which one I vote for because I am not suppose to encourage Rio.
Mom is in the other room…I vote for Whitey after the Iditarod dog, but egg white is pretty funny.
5:23 pm on January 18th, 2011
SiberH!… I like my ideas the best too!…heh!.. I think they should name that cow Betty White…snort!
MagPie! … I don’t know what you mean about me being Registered….grunt! … All I know is my name is Rio….sniff!
5:32 pm on January 18th, 2011
Names!… I don’t need two names like some Kats and Kows do…snort!… I’m not interested in showing off or being the center of attention…cough!
5:33 pm on January 18th, 2011
My favourite is Betty White.
Tyb, you’re right about the hip thing.
I say Bernie would win that fight.
5:48 pm on January 18th, 2011
Hate to tell you this, Rio, but if your friend wrote a check for you, then you are probably registered. Or could be. And Betty White does sort of grow on you. The name that is. We love Betty White the actress.
5:48 pm on January 18th, 2011
Hate to tell you this, Rio, but if your friend wrote a check for you, then you are probably registered. Or could be. And Betty White does sort of grow on you. The name that is. We already love Betty White the actress.
5:49 pm on January 18th, 2011
Not sure how that double post happened!
5:54 pm on January 18th, 2011
Well…mom and dad wrote a check for me to Husky Rescue and I am not registered.
Rio’s toenail prints could be on file somewhere.
5:55 pm on January 18th, 2011
I like Betty White. I heard the real Betty White is on a TV show called Hot in Cincinnati. Has anyone seen it?
Welcome home Dan!
6:10 pm on January 18th, 2011
Mom paid money for me but I am not registered. Mom filled out the papers and left them on the counter – I chewed them up. I didn’t want to belong to that snobby kennel club.
6:24 pm on January 18th, 2011
I like Betty White as a name for the cow and the real Betty White should be sent a picture of her namesake. She has such a good sense of humor, she’ll love it.
6:29 pm on January 18th, 2011
Mollie i think it’s Hot in Cleveland you’re thinking of. It’s a cute show, I’ve seen a bit of it. It’s kind of good-on-paper, great cast and all that but quite often the jokes are really predictable.
6:33 pm on January 18th, 2011
i think the third cow should be named Blanche.
6:33 pm on January 18th, 2011
The Australian Open is on now.
6:41 pm on January 18th, 2011
Me too!
I like Betty White (for the cow’s name – even tho it has nothing to do with snowflakes). I have seen Hot in Cincinnati and LMAO. I agree with Mollypop you should send Betty White a picture of her namesake.
Or: Snow Angel
Dan: Glad you are home. Just don’t stress out the ladies.
6:45 pm on January 18th, 2011
Hey, y’all! Welcome home, Dan. Now get some rest!
B&M: Being a mostly black dog from the South myself, I’ll have to think awhile about names for a white snowflake cow! I’ll let you know if inspiration strikes.
7:04 pm on January 18th, 2011
Last night we were talking about how we got to our forever homes. I think I’ve talked before about Cassie — Mom and Dad’s dog that went over the rainbow bridge before I came here. Someone at Fort Campbell found her in a big trash container and rescued her, then Mom and Dad adopted her. My family named her “Castoff,” but everyone called her Cassie for short.
Buford and Missie were found in the park across the street from our house — they had been left in a big trash bag but had fought their way out.
When Dad was teaching ROTC in a college in Tennessee, the cadets found Rascal (a cat that went over the rainbow bridge a few years ago) in the woods during a field training exercise and Dad brought him home.
Bubbie the kat was found in the street between our house and the park. (Mom and Dad were a little worried because they found two puppies and a kitten during the first few months they lived here — luckily they didn’t find anyone else in the park after that. Knock on wood!!!)
And I was wandering around town, then the boys at Dad’s school started feeding me, so Dad brought me home.
Almost all of the animals Mom and Dad have ever had were rescued by them or someone else. Some people really are stupid about taking care of — or not! — animals. If people would just take care of pets properly there would be a whole lot less misery. I wish there were more animal lovers in the world!!!
7:08 pm on January 18th, 2011
Me too, Kirby…those are good stories.
7:10 pm on January 18th, 2011
Liz: I think you are right, it is Cleveland. Never having been to either place, they are the same to me. I think there used to be a show about Cincinatti.
Yesterday the real Betty White ws 89 years old!
7:18 pm on January 18th, 2011
Bad sight of the week = puppies in trash bags, my opinion.
Tyb, Blanche is the best suggestion so far, that is tres cute!!
7:22 pm on January 18th, 2011
Oh yeah…Hot in Cleveland
7:22 pm on January 18th, 2011
Oh yeah…Hot in Cleveland
7:23 pm on January 18th, 2011
Oops. The double blog bug is back.
7:52 pm on January 18th, 2011
Though it’s been years since I was there, Cleveland is nice…for a city. It’s on Lake Erie.
8:10 pm on January 18th, 2011
Hey!….Betty White was my idea!…wooo!… I bet if there were a way to contact Betty she would love Chet and she would love to visit Chet’s Blog because she is a huge dog lover and advocate, if I am not mistaken…gruff!…. I will have to ponder this and see what I can think of to get Betty White to check out Chet…snort!….Martha Stewart already has!…heh! ahem…I like Betty more though…sniff!
Dawson!…Quit hitting the Submit button!…grump!
8:13 pm on January 18th, 2011
Sibero-H!…I’m telling you right now no one is filing my toenails…grunt!…Ever!
8:28 pm on January 18th, 2011
Rio: I didn’t do it!
8:48 pm on January 18th, 2011
Dawson!…You are telling me that the Software pushed the Submit button all on its own?…wheeze!…I find that very hard to believe unless Mike Baker has installed a simplified version of the “HAL” program to control this here blog. An old copy which he stole from the great movie 2001: A Blog Odyssey….grunt!…We are doomed…sniff!…Because I cannot rememember how that movie ended…heh!
9:04 pm on January 18th, 2011
Rio – “I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.”
9:09 pm on January 18th, 2011
Hey!…I forgot to say ‘Welcome Home Dan the Man!’…heh!…I sure hope Zoe will calm down now and distress now that her main man is at her side…snort!… Hi Dan. You know we all love you and hope you will have a full recovery …..gruff!…Please do Not Over Do right away. Just get strong and healthy for all of us…snorkel!
Molly!….heh!snort!heh!… Now it is
“I’m sorry, Stover. I’m afraid I can’t do that.”…chorkel!
9:09 pm on January 18th, 2011
I remember that line, but I don’t remember how the movie ended either.
9:21 pm on January 18th, 2011
At the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey there is only one astronaut left and he disassembles Hal. Near Jupiter he gets in a pod and sees a large black monolith that has been seen throughout the movie by the audience. He’s swept into some kind of time tunnel. He keeps getting older and older until he’s in bed and the monolith is at the foot of the bed. Finally he becomes a fetus in a bubble that is floating about earth.
9:24 pm on January 18th, 2011
Kats!…Where are all the Kats today?…sniff!…Is it a Kat holiday? None of the Kats have posted a comment….Hooray!…This is a glorious day on the Blog. A Kat-Free day!…snort!snort!
9:25 pm on January 18th, 2011
Very good, Stover, Thanks!!
9:29 pm on January 18th, 2011
SH: You’re welcome. It irritated me when I saw the movie and couldn’t understand what it was about. So I read the novel which I think was written after the movie. It didn’t help.
9:34 pm on January 18th, 2011
Grunt!…And that is why I can never remember the ending to that movie. It never made sense to me and probably never will…heh!…Unless some brilliant English/Literary student of Stover’s has finally figured it out…sniff!
Blog!…The blog has a meaning and most likely will have an ending at some point…snort!…Hope it’s not soon for gosh sakes…grimace!snort!
9:36 pm on January 18th, 2011
Awww!…I am on the same page as Stover about the ending of this brillant movie… heh!…A fact that truly does give meaning to my life…snorkel!
9:47 pm on January 18th, 2011
Heroes! ….I just want to say that I think Kirby’s guys are both Hero’s in regard to saving the more unfortunate of us left and abused by seriously ill humans… snort!…I applaud them with my two front paws for taking care of so many abused and disregarded friends of ours…sniff!…They are truly wonderful humans with awfully big hearts….heh!…Love you guys!…sniffle!…Pug sluurrps and nips!..snort!…Just think, we would not have the likes of Kirby if not for their big kind Southern Hearts!….Hooray!!! …heh!
9:48 pm on January 18th, 2011
I don’t think the film was supposed to make sense. To me it’s very surrealistic.
9:50 pm on January 18th, 2011
The next season of White Collar starts tonight…in ten minutes my time.
9:57 pm on January 18th, 2011
Stover!…Are you feeling well enough to stay up so late my dear?….snort!…Shouldn’t you be getting more rest in your ‘condition’?….sniff!…You aren’t on steroids are you? They make you stay up late and eat ham sandwiches at midnight…snort!…I’ve seen this happen right here!….grunt!
10:05 pm on January 18th, 2011
Hey Rio, old pal of mine. I know we haven’t been around today. Staff had to work from 9 to 6 and then she had to eat and then she had to catch up on the blog and now she is to tired to post.
She told me to say Hi to the Raven and to tell Melanie, BStover and Macy’s Mom to slow down and rest up.
She says she is going to take the rest of her pills and go to sleep. Tomorrow she doesn’t have to work, only take both parents to doctor appointment.
OH gosh there goes her pill reminder.
Night all.
10:12 pm on January 18th, 2011
Thank you Rio and Abbie. I feel pretty good today. I’m not on steroids yet. I have to watch White Collar because I have to find out if Mozzie is still alive and I don’t know if I can get in On Demand.
10:13 pm on January 18th, 2011
Awww!…Staff is still alive! Good news for all of us…heh!… I hope this job of hers is not too much on her delicate system right now…sniff!…I question why she should be back at work at all…grunt!…Unless her ole man can’t bring in the bread and butter…grunt!…I really think it is the expense of keeping Alice in her bling and her hair color that has driven Staff to keep working ….growl! …Damn you Alice M. Johnson!
10:25 pm on January 18th, 2011
Quote!…Dedicated to Stover from the movie 2001: A Blog Odyssey
.
Mike Baker as HAL: “ Let me put it this way, Ms Stover. The 9000 series is the most reliable computer ever made. No 9000 computer has ever made a mistake or distorted information. We are all, by any practical definition of the words, foolproof and incapable of error”…heh!
10:49 pm on January 18th, 2011
Stover to HAL: “That’s your problem .” She takes out her screwdriver and commences the disassemble process.
10:51 pm on January 18th, 2011
Well said Rio – big ups to Kirby’s people. And all the other rescuers here.
10:53 pm on January 18th, 2011
HA!
10:59 pm on January 18th, 2011
Snort!…The Big “HA” was for Stover …sniff!…Liz got in the flow of comments…sneeze…NO disregard to you Liz I just want Stover to know that I did a ‘HA” to her disassemble remark…snorkel …Dave couldn’t do that because he was reliant on his computer. Does this ring any bells?…wheeze!
11:01 pm on January 18th, 2011
Good night all.
11:05 pm on January 18th, 2011
Supposed to get down to -50 tonight so winter is back on. And I just had a ‘brain freeze’ and can’t remember what I was going to post. I must be part Chet. Am planning to watch White Collar also.
11:18 pm on January 18th, 2011
Stover..from another computer..”no disassemble”..anybody know the line?
11:23 pm on January 18th, 2011
We are late in the name game but our vote goes to Snowflake’s Sparkle and 2nd place for Snowflake’s Angel. Although the Betty White is cute, it doensn’t continue the name lineage that we think they were looking for. Gus is actually named Augustus after one of the cowboys in Lonesome Dove. Mom just named a new kitten at the shelter (that looks just like Gus) Woodrow for the other cowboy in that movie. Woodrow’s litter mate is EbbyCalvin after the hotshot pitcher in the movie Bull Durham. Now Mom is thinking about bringing those two babies home. Lordy, will she ever stop!!
All the stories about how you each received your forever homes were really inspiring and made us realize how much we have in common in our love of animals. (That’s Mom talking now…she got really teary eyed on some of the stories). Us, we’re just glad we have a home and all the food we want.
Welcome home, Dan. Hope the move didn’t tire you out too bad, but be sure to rest up before trying any back flips, okay?
11:24 pm on January 18th, 2011
Hmmm. Ahhh…Well!… You guys are not biting the bait so I am going to my warm soft bed also….sniff!…All my baseball toys are just where I like so I can snuggle down right in the middle of all of them and they sort of sink in right around me as if to protect me from anything…heh!…I love my baseball toys. Maybe I love them more now because I miss watching baseball with my friend so much…sigh…She needs baseball really bad, I can tell..snuffle….How far away is April something – Opening Day??…grunt!
11:25 pm on January 18th, 2011
Macy, that’s from Short Circuit! A super cute movie!!
11:39 pm on January 18th, 2011
Hey Rio you grouchy little beastie – this is Sage. Whaddiya mean
‘no Kats today” ? What do you think I am – a kangaroo??? I am the Ultimate Kat, the Most Regal and Powerful Kat. I have Kattitude for days. Basil may be a nice, sweet little lap kitty, but I am one Ruff Tuff Bad Boy Kat….and don’t you forget it! Come on Alice M. – tell Rio how you REALLY feel…
11:46 pm on January 18th, 2011
Hey guys! My Mom and Dad are really softies when it comes to animals. Everytime they try to “find a good home” for an animal they end up adopting it themselves. They say it’s strange right now with just one dog and two cats — you may remember their highest population was three dogs, three cats and a flying squirrel! (Not quite up to Melanie’s standards, though!) I’m sure our next addition is right around the corner, but Mom says she’s welcoming the break in the high vet bills!
We’re off to bed, so g’night, y’all!!!
11:50 pm on January 18th, 2011
Ebby Calvin Nuke LaLouche – I loved ‘Bull Durham’.
Hey CHarris, the temperature on Mars is -50. (But maybe that’s in summer…)
11:53 pm on January 18th, 2011
Speaking of kangaroos, here’s a picture from the recent floods up north. This guy is my hero.

12:00 am on January 19th, 2011
What a cool picture, LizF! We can’t imagine what all the animals are going through in those awful floods. Thank goodness there are people who care.
12:04 am on January 19th, 2011
Dear God – Please bless all the animals in the world tonight who need looking after. And bless all the people who care for them.
Amen
12:11 am on January 19th, 2011
Amen
