Fun With Donkeys And Elephants

“People aren’t at their best these days,” Spence says.

“I’ve noticed,” says Admin. “Who are you voting for?”

“That’s my business.”

They glare at each other for a bit, and then look at me.

“Who do you think Chet would vote for?” Spence says.

“Hard to say,” says Admin. “The donkeys would take some of his Slim Jims and spread them around. The elephants would try to incentivize an increase in the overall Slim Jim supply in the hope that some would fall into the hands of the Iggys of the world.”

Donkeys? Elephants? Hands of Iggy? No wonder people weren’t at their best. But no one gets my Slim Jims, let’s be clear about that.

Iggy gets a vote too. I voted yesterday with an absentee ballot.

I'm not looking forward to being subjected to all the political ads coming up to election, especially since there are now no limits on how much can be spent and who can spend it.

Hope Dan is feeling much better after having his pills adjusted.

For Sherlock Holmes fans: "Sherlock" is on PBS Oct. 24th. This one takes place on modern day London which should be interesting. Author Laurie R. King writes books about Sherlock Holmes and Mary Russell. They are different but clever. The first one is The Beekeeper's Apprentice.

Chet doesn't like horses, so he probably doesn't like donkeys either. He liked Peanut, after he got used to her smell and not wanting to be herded. We will have to ponder for awhile.

Dawson, We just heard on the weather report yesterday that they think we will have heavy snowfalls in the midwest this winter. So not looking forward to that!

We have a wind chill of 29 here today but no snow.

And I don't think the elephants give a damn about the Iggys of this world.

B.Stover: I read all of her books, but I am a Sherlock Holmes fan. The books should be read in order. I think she has been to all of the places they travel to in the books. I especially liked the book where she brought back Irene Adler. I met her at a bookstore signing once. She is very very nice. She said she had an academic theological background.

Bee, You have a point about the elephants. They probably want to keep the Slim Jims for a select few at the top of the heap.

Barb says she is really enjoying The Help. She says she thinks it is more of a woman's book, but if you are old enough to remember the civil rights movement in the early 60's, it is very interesting. It takes place in Jackson, Misissippi, and I don't know why, but Barb does a lot of head shaking while she reads it. The side to side kind of shake, not the up and down kind.

I bet Bernie doesn't read the label to see what ingredients are in Slim Jims. My mom does…wouldn't you know it.

We will be so glad when the election is over. The campaigns are so hateful and nasty. We are tired of it on tv and the mailbox. My folks have already voted. It would be a better world if us dogs could vote and run for office.

It is finally cool enough here that humans are having to wear lightweight jackets. Molly got snow!! The Santa Fe ski area got a pathetic dusting of snow. The trees aren't turning here yet, but they are looking very tired.

All elephants aren't the greedy guts many of y'all are talking about. Many care very much for the Iggy's of the world. It's the pseudo-iggys (those who want to ride the system with a feeling of entitlement) that make them very mad. In Louisianna, many of the Iggy's were kept (by the Donkeys) in poor housing developments with JUST enough to get by and then bussed to vote for those very Donkeys that fostered that situation. We know…because our neighbor used to drive the bus!

Anyway, Mom doesn't like to talk politics and since she's clearly out-numbered on the blog, has said her only bit about it. We agree with everyone that we are sick of all the political ads (both in the media and on the net) that are inaccurate or out-and-out falsehoods. And basically, we're animal people here. Animals rule.

Bee, We get Netflix too, not sure what plan Rio and his friend have. Our plan is $9.00 per mo. and you get 1 movie at a time. As soon as you watch it and send it back, they ship out the next one. Usually mail time is 1 day. You can also watch some of the movies on your computer, but we never do that. We have watched a ton of good movies that would never make it to our little video store, and some really good ones that we had never heard of.

Stover. Laurie King is an extraordinarily talented author. All of the Mary Russell books are terrific, but as noted above, they should be read in sequence to be best appreciated. Her other series, involving a female police officer in San Francisco (the Kate Martinelli series) is also excellent, and Laurie even manages to pull off a bit of overlap between the two in the most recent Kate Martinelli book (The Art of Detection), as strange as that may seem, given the different time periods in which the two series are set and the fact that one series is a work of fiction and the other is a work of fiction involving a purportedly fictional character. She has a number of stand alone novels as well, all good, but some a bit harder to get through than others. I really think you would enjoy all of her work. Wookie

Thank you Wookie. I already read Beekeeper's Apprentice and I've downloaded The Moor to my Kindle. (I know that that is fourth in the series but Hound of the Baskervilles is one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes novels and Moor has references to that.) I'll read the others in order from now on.

Thank you B&M. I can get a number of movies and tv series from Amazon. I don't have to download them but I "own" them and can watch anytime by going to my Amazon account. They cost about $1 to $2 per episode or $3 to $4 for a movie (actually that price is just renting the movie–but it's cheaper than On Demand). Some things (like Rubicon) I like to watch more than once.

Bluecat, Barb loves The Help. She is about 1/3 throught it now, and has trouble putting it down.

Does anyone read Lisa Scottoline? Will check out Elizabeth Peters. So many books, so little time!

  39. Wookie of Chevy Chas
    11:40 am on October 22nd, 2010

Stover: Sequencing is somewhat less critical in the first few books of the series, as long as you have at least read the very first book, so reading The Moor out of sequence should not be a problem at all. It's really the last five or six books where you have some recurring characters or more direct connections from one book to the next that sequencing may matter more. And if you have a copy or even have read the Annotated Sherlock Holmes, that may make The Moor even a tidy bit more pleasureable given the indirect connection (although by no means essential).

B&M: Hard to say. The writing style is a lot different than Conan Doyle and the plots a bit more contemporary relative to the originals, although still set in the early 20th Century. Clearly, Sherlock Holmes is a major character, with Mary Russell his mentee in the earlier books and later (**MINI SPOILER ALERT**) his wife. I would urge Barb to at least try the first one, and see what she thinks.

  42. Wookie of Chevy Chas
    11:50 am on October 22nd, 2010

B&M: Lisa Scottoline is a lot of fun to read. Great characterization and plots both, with a wicked but subtle sense of humor too. She has also done something few authors have done. Her first three to four books had separate, stand-alone characters, which she subsequently brought together into most of the subsequent books (although she has a few stand-alones too). Alas, her writing career has faired better than her marital career, having gone through two divorces and having recently published a non-fiction book (a complication of columns she wrote for one of the Philly newspapers) entitled "My Next Husband Will Be a Dog." She is a great dog fanatic in real life, with great Philadelphia Italian roots, which comes through in a number of the books (she even has been known to pass around Tasky-Kakes, a Philly high carb/sugar treat, at many of her book signings). By making contributions to some of her favorite charities, you can also wind up as a character in some of her books. How about that.

My mom loves Elizabeth Peters, although I haven't read any myself. The setting for most if not all of the books is Eygpt, which can be quite exotic.

Jacqueline Winspear's first book is "Maisie Dobbs". She was a nurse in WWI and after the war becomes a private investigator. She tells what it was like in the war and the problems after the war.

Elizabeth Peters writes about Amelia Peabody who in the 1880's goes to Egypt to see the tombs. The first book is called "The Crocodile on the Sandbank". She is never without her parasol, which can handily be used as a weapon. Elizabeth Peters has a Ph.D in Egyptology. She has a great wit and I laugh out loud at some of the lines she writes.

Boy, everyone is just mentioning great writers today. Mollie referred to Jacqueline Winspear and her Maisie Dobbs series, which is also first rate. Great perspective on the WWI time frame. There are now seven books in the series, with the seventh book, The Mapping of Love and Death, serving as a transition to what may be a new phase in Maisie's life. Extraordinarily well written series, great historical setting, and a pace to the story telling that is just perfect. Wookie

    Thankyou,

It has been quite an amazing series, with some major ups and downs. Here in North Texas we are accustomed to the team fading in August and September. We hardly dared to hope that this year could be different. When it became apparent that we had made the post season then entire area was in shock.

We are so happy, we can't even take it all in yet. Thanks for all the blog support and the graciousness of the not-winners. Let's take a little rest, then PLAY BALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is Hamilton humble or what? Love Joshie, Ian, Mikey, bad Vlad, Nelly, Elvis, Murph, Wash, Bengie, all the pitchers, just every one. Thanks to Hank Greenburg from saving the team from being bought by someone who knows little about baseball. Anyone can win with a 250 million budget, but only the Rangers can win in bankruptcy!!!!!!!!
