From To Fetch A Thief: A Bit Of Running (For Marathon Day)

Peanut’s eyes opened. She watched me drink. I watched her watching. She dipped her trunk in the pool, so of course I thought she was taking another drink. Surprise: her trunk bent in my direction and out came a jet of water, soaking me through and through. Bernie sometimes did that with the garden hose: it was one of my favorite games. I started running around that water hole, darting this way and that at my very fastest, Peanut sitting on her butt and spraying me whenever I got near. Were we having fun or what?

Welcome Max. Sleeper: please try again.

Silent auction sounds good.

Happy Tax Day, y’all! I thought if a day had a special name that makes it a holiday, which is a good thing. But for some reason Mom isn’t looking too happy. She has the checkbook out and she’s grumbling — something about not letting Uncle Sam get his hands on our money a minute sooner than necessary. I have Uncle Michael, Uncle Doug, Uncle Chris, Uncle David and a cousin Sam — not too sure who this Uncle Sam character is! I just hope our finances aren’t as messed up as Bernie’s are!!!

    Good Morning Everyone:

Kirby: I also have an Uncle Sam that I am not very fond of. The Prof and I owed him some money as well. We had to open an IRA so we wouldn’t have to owe as much…

Tell your mom Good Luck, Kirby T!

The silent auction has a nod from on high! Cool!

Snowhook!!!! Being myself, I would bid on the dog tag that got chewed up . . . More story there!

    Loved Natasha’s report. snicker.

For the Silent Auction (at this point)
    A framed 11 by 14 of Newfoundlands.
Signed pic (suitable for framing) of YSAS.

Now what do you think of a signed book of Dan’s For The Love of Puppies?

Eagle pic of the morning . . .

    Morning Rose!

Also for our cookbook, I thought I’d ask YSAS for his recipe for twice battered tofu. I hate tofu, but love that stuff!

And OTAS has several good recipes.

Dan has one we call “Dancing Chicken”, I’ll have to ask him how he does that.

I’ll ask Zoë which recipe she wants to add. Of course, what we go for now is quick and easy.

Hmmm. Can you tell I’m not a chef?

Melanie: I haven’t turned the eagle cam on for awhile — it was messing up my computer — but I’ve only seen a couple of birds in your last few pictures. Is the third baby under the mama bird, or did something happen to it…shudder?

Good morning Kirby. Sorry about the checkbook thing! How come we all have to send money to that Uncle Sam?

Barb just said to me “Guess who’s coming this morning? The Goaty-goats! I know Goaty-goats, so I started my straight up and down springing-jump and barked a few times. Nothing happened, no goaties, so not sure what she is talking about. Humans, sometimes they are hard to figure. She said something about 9:00 but that’s more than 2 so not sure what it means.

Melanie, can you post a picture of a brown and white Boer goat for us?

Barb says they both may have twins, so then we will have more than two!

Hello all! Lost our internet yesterday right after we posted. Looked this a.m. and awoooo to Siber !
Did you see that Snowhook is selling their calendar??? That sounds like something we have to have!
Mom & Dad went to work same as every day, so we don’t think this is a holiday here at Howling Arabians.
About the Silent Auction: we think the items you guys are mentioning all sound great, but we can’t think of anything we can sell. Mom & Dad are not artistic, and the only thing us huskies do is kill critters and bury our bones. We asked Mom to put the horses up for auction but she didn’t think that was funny in the least.

Recipes! Mom and Dad have a special bean recipe. After their wedding reception they had family and friends come to grandma and grandpa’s house for an after-party. One of grandma’s friends wanted to do something to help, so she volunteered to bring beans. The next day all Dad could talk about were those beans. So Mom wrote to Mrs. Knox and said if there was any hope of her marriage lasting, she had to have that recipe! Mom and Dad served those beans at their restaurant, and people would buy containers of them to take home. Then a few weeks ago when we all met my girl’s boyfriend, Mom and Dad made those beans. The next day my girl texted Mom and said all her boyfriend could talk about were those beans — and could Dad make a batch to give him when they met again the next week? Mom and Dad laughed because they said the boyfriend passed the bean test!!!

KirbyT: Three eaglets! One’s trying to sleep.
    Also DO the beans!

OleyHowlers: Maybe a tape of you guys howling at the moon?

Barb & MagPie: I LOVE baby goats. They way they try to jump around as soon as they are born . . . Somewhere I must have a picture of our baby goats, but it would be in the attic. I can’t go in the attic because I’m allergic to dust and pink insulation. :(

    Anyhoo: Here you go!

    9:28 am on April 18th, 2011

Thank you Melanie. Rio will think that is way too many goats. Stormy and Sandy (AKA Baby Goat) will be here in a bit. Stormy is a dairy goat of some breed, and B.G. is half dairy, half Boer, so her babies will be 3/4 Boer. Daddy looks like the ones that are white with the brown head and neck.

You are right, baby goats are adorable and they love to skip and jump. They love life. Do you think we should enter one of them in the auction?

    Kirby,

I happen to be fond of beans. Can you please post that recipe asap so that mom can make me a batch?

    Go Eva!

Kirby: Beans are our most favorite food. We eat all beans, made all sorts of ways. So we are looking forward to that recipe as well.
Melanie: We do great howling at the moon, but not so sure anyone would want to bid on that.

  13. Tupper and Gilly
    10:24 am on April 18th, 2011

    Morning everyone –
Kirby – please do share the recipe for beans – Mama would love it for her collection, but for some reason, she says Gilly and I aren’t allowed to have any…something about us sleeping on her side of the bed. We have NO idea what sleeping has to do with beans, but she gave our Dad a long hard look when she was saying it….
Macy – just checking in with you..are you ok out there in Texas with the wildfires? The weather channel says that all but two of Texas’ counties are affected. One of the women who comes to Crazy Lady land is a Information Specialist for the National Fire something office, and she is on her way out to Texas to help deal with all this. Stay safe, little one.
Barb – how about a video of baby goats playing, set to music, a la Melanie’s Walking with Newfs?
Rio – speaking of auctions, two thoughts that woke Mama in the middle of the night (as thoughts often do). She thinks it might be good to space the offerings out; maybe offer 3 or 4 things for a week or two, then move on to the next batch. Give people a chance to find out about the auctions and keep them coming back to the Snowhook page more often. Also, she says we need to think of a standarized format to submit with the items – about the donator, the size of the item, the opening bid.
    Just some thoughts.
Melanie – Good Morning!! do you have this gorgeous sunlight up there too? Mama keeps saying “I don’t WANNA go to work”….too bad for her. Gilly and I are going to spend the day on the deck – in the sun – with BONES!

    Good Morning!

O.Howlers: We join your in the dilemma of what to offer for the auction What to do – what to do! We ordered the 2011 calendar from Snowhook a while back and are looking forward to receiving it in the mail (Rebecca said it would be out mid April)

Melanie: That’s a lot of goats! Liked the update on the eagles too. An autographed copy of Dan’s book would be great! So now you have 3 really good ideas.

Kirby: That bean recipe must be really good! Please submit it for the recipe book.

Hi, B&M & Rose and Everyone!

Kirby: I bid 22 thousand kopeks on the bean recipe! 24! 26!
Oh wait, I don’t have kopeks. I have Canadian dollars. $5.00, $10.00, $15.00! Oh? They aren’t in the auction? They’re in the nominally priced cookbook to be? Oh, well…that’s good then. I’ll buy that.
Snowhook Bella: Me too, I’d bid on the chewed up tag.
Melanie: Yes! An autographed copy of Dan’s book would be great. And a framed Newfoundland picture! And Rio will have some competition for that picture of McKey.

  19. Barb & Maggie
    10:39 am on April 18th, 2011

Yes, we want the bean recipe too. Love beans!

Barb liked the idea of doing some type of garden basket for auction, but that would have to be later in the year.

oh poop! Our totally innocent comments are still being moderated.
We are going to blame Natasha (she is never up this early anyway)
We were just visiting Snowhook’s blog spot. Reading through their descriptions of their dogs over the years, we were struck with how much their descriptions sounded like Chet. They talk about one dog who looks like he is about to divuldge the secrets of life, only to be distracted by something shiny. Love it!

B: Seems to me a while back you were mentioning something about it being such a nice day with temps in the 70’s and asking when is it going to snow…

Kirby – We loved you telling about the needlepoint of the American Eagle. Mom knows how hard that was to make because when the books give the design on graph paper, it still has to be drawn onto the needlepoint canvas. And that’s all before the stitching can begin.

    Bear: LOL!

  27. Kirby T. Penworthy
    11:30 am on April 18th, 2011

Mollypop: Mom says it was a little tricky. Mostly, though, she was amazed that this retired truck driver wanted to do it in the first place, and that he not only learned to needlepoint for the project, but stayed with it until it was finished — about 20 inches square! That’s a big project for your first try! As far as she knows, though, that was the only needlepoint he ever did!

Hey, y’all! I gotta go. Mom has to stop at the accountant’s and the post office before she goes to work — and she doesn’t seem real happy about it. So I’ve gotta turn off the computer. I’ll try to post the bean recipe tonight, if Mom has recovered from Tax Day enough to turn the computer on for me!!!

And, we figured out what we will auction. We will put together a gift basket of items from Tails of the Tundra Siberian Husky Rescue…benefit our favorite charity and help with Snowhook sponsorship at the same time! What do you all think? Wolfie — Thanks for your concern. I had my eighth treatment last week and so this is an off week (just a blood test but no chemo). Which is a good thing because mom has gone away for a couple of days with her oldest friend (they have known each other since fourth grade which all I am authorized to say is a long time ago) and her friend’s father — who grew up in Western Maryland but hasn’t been back in many, many years — kind of a rediscover your roots trip for him with my mom as tour guide and chauffeur. That mean’s me and dad are “bach’ing” it (plus grandpa too once my dad picks him up later this afternoon). That’s okay but I already miss my mom a lot. (I think she left enough food but dad, bless his heart, is not as food savvy as mom is.)

I am so excited about the silent auction and how everybody has been so supportive. We are also going to go to the Snowhook web page to order the calendar just as soon as I finish posting here.

I also loved Melanie’s video about the Newfs. They are definitely my kind of guys and gals.

Be back later after grandpa gets picked up.

We will be ordering the clothing!
Rio, I have had to do more than break into my piggy bank. I have had to memorize mom’s credit card and bank account numbers…no memory problem when it concerns stuff I want.

I like Melanie’s auction items, but that is too many goats for a Monday morning. I can almost smell them.

Goats are here, now Barb has to get ready for work this afternoon. Stormy may have her babies today or tomorrow. She isn’t traumatized about being here, cause she remembers from last fall. She is standing in the corner of the barn, staring at the wall. Pondering….

Howlers, I think auctioning off a basket from your Husky Rescue is a very good idea. That is something mom and I would like.

Details!…I want to nail down the Auction details this week. I have some questions for everyone to think about. Once you’ve thought about them, let me know what you think…..grunt!

    1. With the entry fee due in June, should we try and have an auction in May?

    2. Some of us will not have our Items ready for auction until later. Should we have another auction in the summer?

    3. Who among you would have an item ready by the first week of May? This means having a nice photograph(.jpg) of it along with a short description and a minimum bidding price.

    4. Who among you would be willing to volunteer to help with the auction in a larger capacity than just donating an item? Or if you do not have anything to auction, would you be willing to volunteer your time instead?

    5. How long should the Items be up for auction? One week? Two weeks? Or more?

Questions!….If we can answer these questions we will be a lot closer to kicking this thing off…heh!..Please answer the questions in one post…snort!…Don’t answer one and then 2 house later answer another one….wheeze!…I will be trying to keep track of what everyone thinks…sniff!

Barb, I was thinking that maybe we could get people in other countries, like on the other side of the world, to bid on those goats for Snowhook’s auction.

Thanks for letting us know about it, Stover.

    Rio

I think we should have the auction from June 1 to June 15. Most everyone should be ready. If we are successful, we can have another one later.

My toffee will be ready by then. I will auction off two batches, packaged in one pound boxes, and will ship anywhere. (I will donate all shipping costs.) I will need to find some cute boxes though.

I can email a photo to someone and hopefully they can post it for me. My ipaw has limitations. Perhaps Melanie or Mollypop can help post?

I wonder if it would be possible to post a link to the auction on ctd?

  43. Siber-H
    1:45 pm on April 18th, 2011

Good planning and good questions, Rio.

I have never taken part in an auction of any kind so I DO NOT KNOW how they work, but here are my pathetic answers:
    1. Yes
    2. Yes
    3. Don’t know
    4. We can’t come up with a single item to auction, but mom says I can spend money on it, and maybe I could help in some other way.
    5. I don’t think the items need to be up for auction any longer than two weeks…one week might be enough.

Since we all want Snowhook to be able to pay the entry fee in June, I am sending them another donation the first week or so in May.

  44. Melanie
    1:48 pm on April 18th, 2011

B.Stover: I think Stormy is just getting ready. Our ladies sit, pant heavily and stare at nothing.

MagPie: One of the babies would be great for the auction. (But only if we make sure Riö gets it even if he doesn’t bid!)

    Riö: Thinking on your post.

  45. Siber-H
    1:50 pm on April 18th, 2011

Rio, I used the credit card option instead of pay pal to order the calendar. I see Stover did the same thing, which will make mom feel better (once she finds out about it) about ordering it online instead of snail mail.

  46. B.Stover
    1:54 pm on April 18th, 2011

Rio: It may be better to wait until everyone is ready for the auction. Unless Rebecca tells us otherwise, the entry free may already be well supported.

The only think I can think of to put up for auction is a poem or a short story.(I can post it any time.) I’m not sure how to go about doing that though. Posting either here could take up too much space. Any ideas tech people?

What would volunteering to help with the auction entail?

I think one week for the auction is sufficient time.

  47. B.Stover

Thanks for the concern regarding th fires. As we live in the middle of the cities, there is little danger of wildfires here. Ft. Worth is where the west begins, and a lot of that reason is because to the west of use the air is a lot drier and dustier. Those people can’t even have a heated conversation without starting a fire. One firefighter has died, which made dad very sad. Hopefully no new ones will start today.

  51. Wolfie
    2:12 pm on April 18th, 2011

I think we should check with with Rebecca regarding the entry fee. The last time she mentioned it, Snowhook was about halfway to the goal. I think the auction might be helpful, and since we have some momentenum building, we may want to run with it! Lol, we may be the primary bidders!

Having babies is not a huge ordeal for them, after you notice labor, maybe 1 hour, with about 30 minutes tops between births. Usually first will be standing and trying to nurse by the time the second comes.

Auction!….My friend wrote this up to try and explain first what a Silent Auction is and how we will be able to handle it through a blog….snort!

Silent auctions are a great way to raise money. Everyone always over-pays for the item they want because they bid against others who also want that same item. Usually, one signs in and receives a ticket or piece of paper with an identifying number on it. Then they walk around looking at the donated items and if something catches their eye and they can’t live without it, they will bid on it. This means writing down the dollar amount they will pay for it on a sheet of paper along with their assigned identifying number.

So say you see one of Debbie’s quilts and you want it. You look at the sheet of paper with all the bids on it and under the last bid entered you put in an amount that is higher. Later you come back and check the sheet. Damn! Someone else wants this quilt really badly too and they have upped the bid by 25.00. Now you have to decide if you want to bid more to try and win the quilt.

We have to do this on Snowhook’s blog, and use photos and written descriptions of our donated items. The identifying number of the bidder will instead be their email address/name. The Item will have a number. The bidder will email the amount over the minimum starting bid and the number of the Item they want to the “bid keeper”. The one who volunteers for this job will update Snowhook’s blog with the newest bid amounts that come in. We can use the “Comments” section for this. All bidders must check the “Comments” section to see what amount their desired Item is up to. Hopefully, there will be a few bidding wars going on.

Snowhook will post a link on their Facebookie page and announce the auction. Chet will post a link and an announcement of the auction also. Maybe he will even Tweet about it. The rules etc. will be laid out before the photos of the donated items are displayed on the blog. We will have a time limit on the bidding. One week sounds about right. It will start on a Sunday and end the following Saturday. Exact time of day to be determined. Once it is over the winners will be announced and they will promptly send their money to Snowhook. Once Snowhook receives the money they will email the bid-keeper with the mailing address of the winner. The bid-keeper will give this info to the Plunderer who donated the item. They will be responsible for mailing the item to the winner.

    Snort!wheeze!….Any questions?….cough!

    Rio-
You are a genius. The only suggestion I have is that we end the auction on a Sunday instead of Saturday. Gives us another day to collect bids and it seems as if most folks are off on the weekend.

    I like it.

Riö (bowing here to your ability to think and do) you are wonderful.

I am NOT going to volunteer for the “bid keeper”. I’m doing better, but good dog, I get so tired and when I get tired my dyslexia hits. Not a good idea.

I would like to help though. Perhaps with taking photos of the auction items that need some work. I would not change color or anything like that but could crop and stuff.

    Would that help?

Egad! If SQ could write as many words as the Plunderers do in a day, there’d be two new Chet and Bernie books a year. Silent Auctions! Iditarod Sponsors! Cookbooks! Being a Plunderer is a full time job. If I hadn’t gone already, you’d put me over the rainbow.

Mom is in a bad mood today also. She did her taxes a month ago and went to e-file today but then found out that she had to mail the taxes in due to some change in the law regarding the adoption credit.

Only dad used up all the ink printing out church bulletins so they had to use the old printer. But then dad had to install a new driver and also download adobe flash and then she had to rush.

If you ask me, that’s what she gets for procrastinating. Dad is at the post office now.

She asked questions about teaching that I take for granted: how do you know how long to schedule each text covered on the syllabus, how do you come up with exam questions. That kind of thing. I’m having her do research on the artwork–which she will choose–for each period covered.

    Answers to your questions –
1,We like the idea of starting auctions in May, but we still think it would be better to have a few items each week, and stretch it out for a while. But we will go along with whatever the group decides.
    2. Yes to more than one auction
    3. We could have an item for the beginning of May, but we do want to create something special for the auction and even if we start that tonight, it wouldn’t be ready and photographed by the first of May.

Rio – about the $5 or $2 increment discussion…much to be said on both sides of the coin. But we think the suggested value of the item should determine the increment amount. If someone donates something that is worth say 25.00, the $5 increment might be a bit much. But say Liz donates one of her incredible paintings, $5 increments would be quite reasonable.

    1. With the entry fee due in June, should we try and have an auction in May? Well I have mine ready except it is at the farm. I would have to get it and photo it first. Only if it is late May. June is really better for me.

    2. Some of us will not have our Items ready for auction until later. Should we have another auction in the summer? This might be the way to handle it.

    3. Who among you would have an item ready by the first week of May? This means having a nice photograph(.jpg) of it along with a short description and a minimum bidding price. Not Staff

    4. Who among you would be willing to volunteer to help with the auction in a larger capacity than just donating an item? Or if you do not have anything to auction, would you be willing to volunteer your time instead? Ahhh, I would have to rest up before I can even start thinking about that.

    5. How long should the Items be up for auction? One week? Two weeks? Or more? How about 2 weeks. One week goes by so fast for us old folks.

I vote for $2.00 increases. Many of the items are not going to be super expensive so I think $5.00 seems like too much. How do you determine a minimum bid for starting? Lets say it is something you can price check on ebay and the average selling price for the item is $100. Where wuould you place the minimum starting bid? And again what if no one bids past an opening bid, then what? I think with some auctions, if the seller doesn’t get a certain minimum price, then they just pay some sort of fee. Or will this be what they call an absolute auction?

T&G – thanks !! :) I agree it would depend on the set value of the item whether the increments should be $5 or $2, but then maybe that doesn’t matter – if something is only worth $25 or so, it would either sell quickly or make lots of extra money!

This could be a very valuable box of toffee!
