From The Leaping Scene in A Cat Was Involved

“Okay, Chet, you’re up,” Bobby said. He clapped his hands. “Chet. Up and over. Come.”

Leap over this horse jump, was that it? A snap. I dug my front paws into the grass—best way for getting the kind of explosive start that makes the rest of it a piece of cake, as humans say, although why I’m not sure, cake being nothing special in my opinion—but at the very last moment before there’d be no stopping me, I caught a slight movement from the direction of the wooden fence. I paused, glanced over, and saw, peering in through a small hole down where the fence met the ground, a cat. And not just any cat, but a plump, white cat with golden eyes and a pinkish nose: Beauty.

It would be interesting to try to diagram the third sentence. Love it!

    Good morning all.

Superb!…Spencer can really tip-tap-tippity-tap out a sentence. It might take him all day but he gets it done!…snorkel!

Good Day to all, and Happy Second Closing to Barb! Time for the next phase of life. How exciting!

Isn’t it cool that Spence is posting so many excerpts to ACWI that all those who have not found a way to download it will just read it bit by bit on the blog each day! Heh heh

If the cat had not peered in, Chet would have easily jumped. I like it better that that’s The Road Not Taken.

    Good morning, y’all!

Bee: At one of the newspapers where Mom worked, there was a reporter at a rival newspaper who was an absolute expert at run-on sentences. Every week when their paper came out, Mom’s staff would count his sentence lengths. Mom can’t remember the record, but it was somewhere in the 50s or 60s. I think Chet may have beat him! (But not by much!)

Dear Empress Bee of the Ivory Tower – only you would read that passage and think first about grammatical implications.

    Good morning everyone.
Barb – congrats again on the move
Howlers hope Mom is feeling tip top again
Rio – Mama and Melanie have figured out the perfect tattoo for you. It seems that OTAS loves sharks and is looking for a willing individual to get a shark portrait. We thought your cute, round little butt would be great for a picture of an open mouthed great white. Right around your curly little tail.
Snort – oh, excuse us. Royal Corgis do NOT snort. That was the Wrotten Kats.
    tee hee

But the third sentence is not a run-on; that would be a Banned Error! It’s a legitimate sentence which is what makes it so much fun.

My dad remembers diagramming sentences, especially complex ones, from ninth grade English class. He actually liked it a lot. He also really liked geometry; I think it has something to do with straight lines and intersections. He also liked geometric proofs and kind of thought of diagramming as a form of syntactic proof. For a differing perspective, my mom and I think he’s nuts for liking stuff like that. She is a bit more of a stream of consciousness gal. Me, I prefer just to bark. Although we do have a friend who has never met a period or comma that he couldn’t dispose of. Just amazing.

I love everything about the e-story! Hope Dawson and Barb will be reading it very soon.

    From last night:
We agree with B about Midnight In Paris. Loved the movie.
Rio: Breaking Bad is Big Favorite around here. However, as we have mentioned before, there is no way to watch it other than: (1) wait for the DVD or (2) purchase the episodes through Amazon Prime. My poor treat budget is staining at the seams right now, but Someone here may break down soon and go for it.
Sounds like a great day for your Friend upcoming in September.

Wookie & B: Diagramming sentences…I feel a headache coming on.

Bear!…I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about the episode of Breaking Bad we watched last night….wheeze!…It was so well written, directed and acted, it made my head spin…sniff!…George Mastras wrote and directed the episode. He has won awards before for his writing on the show…chuffle!…Amazing talent all around. The story is gripping, chilling and terrifying all at the same time….snort!…I was watching the beginning scene and scratching my head as to why they would include it…grunt!…Then at the end it all came together so perfectly and tradgically. He had us cheering the characters in one moment and then the next we were shocked back to the reality of the evil they are perpetrating…sniff!…You must watch this season – it is the best so far. I say that every season because it only gets better….wheeze!

Mom just got back from a day out. First she went to see a movie — Hope Springs with Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones. She was surprised about how many people were there — and she was just about the youngest one (not something that happens very often!) — and then she came out of the theater and found a bus from a nursing home. Ohhhh, that explains it!

And then she and my boy’s girlfriend went to get pedicures. Dad said she should take me, too, but I nixed that one pretty quickly!

Then on the way home, Mom decided to stop and pick up some supper since Dad’s off to a football game to scout the other team. His team hasn’t even started practicing yet — that doesn’t come until Monday — so they’re way behind all the other schools around here, which will make it harder when they have to play them. 🙁

Maggie, when we moved out of our last house, Mom and Dad hired a cleaning service to come in and do an “empty house cleaning”. Three ladies came in and cleaned top to bottom (walls, windows, cabinets, you name it…)for a couple of hundred dollars. The lady who bought the house got a spotless house to move into and Mom felt it was well worth the expense. You ought to consider doing that at the house you are moving into. That way y’all can move in to a super clean house and concentrate on unpacking and getting settled. It only took the ladies a few hours since they weren’t having to work around any furnishings.

We were all excited and helped by getting underfoot as much as possible. THEN – we find out they were packing for a trip WITHOUT US! Someone call the SPCA! They are abandoning us all alone ( except for Gramp) and we won’t have anything to eat ( except the breakfast and supper that Gramp fixes) and no treats ( except the ones we con…oops….I mean we respectfully request from Gramp) and we will have to sleep in those big soft armchairs instead of our own snugly beds.

Quick! Someone get me a towel — a wet Kirby doesn’t smell as good as you’d think!

Remember I mentioned raking? Well, I backed over a bag of yard debris and hurt my shoulder falling. I rate yard work right up there with cooking in terms of danger of personal injury. In addition to moving to a warmer climate, I need to buy a condo in a neighborhood with a lot of restaurants. No yard work, no cooking.
