From the Cape Cod Times
“The Sound and the Furry: A Chet and Bernie Mystery,” Spencer Quinn (Atria Books, ISBN 978-1-4767-0322-0, 311 pages, $25)
Leave it to Spencer Quinn (aka Peter Abrahams of Falmouth) to come up with another clever and hilarious outing for canine narrator Chet and his human, Bernie, as they head to the bayous of Louisiana, where there’s a potential crime and a lot of other exotic smells for Chet to check out. Previous titles in this fun series include: “Dog On It,” “Thereby Hangs a Tail,” “To Fetch a Thief,” “The Dog Who Knew Too Much” and “A Fistful of Collars.” – Melanie Lauwers

I’m having fun reading “Sound.”
Good morning all.
9:26 am on October 7th, 2013
Good morning all. Hope Spence is resting up after his major tour.
Cold here, but we are going to get a warm up tomorrow, with temps in the upper 60s or 70s for a few days. Barb is definitely going to get the patio painted this week.
9:26 am on October 7th, 2013
Gooood morning, everyone! OFA, thank you for sharing another review.
Dawson and Melanie: Fried pies are what they sound like. A pie that has been fried instead of baked. Usually a friut filling, like apple or peach or cherry and smaller. A single serving, half round (like an empanada). Fits in the hand and can be carried. Think of Mickey D’s Apple pies.
In honor of the apple, have a Macintosh Monday!

Good Morning! Now that is a nice review. Someone finally got it right: “..canine narrator Chet and his human, Bernie”.
We are in
jailthe house today, due to lots of rain and a tornado watch.9:50 am on October 7th, 2013
Hi everyone. Rain here too. The leaves are so pretty this year, we are hoping the rain doesn’t knock them down too soon.
Yup, we like “canine narrator” too.
10:08 am on October 7th, 2013
Greetings!
Nice review.
The weather here in New York has been gray and drizzly, with lots of humidity. My hair just loves it.
HOH: Cherry pie is my favorite! Love a couple of fried pies. These can also be made with seasoned meat inside. In Spanish, they are called Pastillos, and are very yummy. Sometimes, there is very little meat, and lots of dough, but I’ll eat it any way they are on my plate.
Melanie, how are you?
Belle Starr, being as you and your four-legged mama are part of the Smoochers, I hope you are waiting on the Pixie paw and paw.
Howlers

Howlers: Sorry for your incarceration.
10:17 am on October 7th, 2013
Sheesh – just catching up on last night.
Fried pies – sooooo yummy. And sooooo bad for you. Why do those two always seem to go hand in hand? sigh
Mr Staff – GO TO THE DOCTOR!
Glad there was no appearance of Zombie Melanie last night. Hope that meant she was sleeping.
Rebecca, Tenzing, Dima and any others rumpling the quilt-feel better soon.
10:22 am on October 7th, 2013
Good Morning! A cup of Hot Coco and a wonderful review. Excellent.
Rose, I slept last night. My body is in shock.
Weather? Yuck is a good word. So is Muck. At this point they are not talking about tornados here, but keeping an ear cocked to the radio just in case.
So a fried meat pie is like the Pasty pie I have read about in “The Cat Who . .” series?
10:25 am on October 7th, 2013
Melanie, so glad you slept last night! I wish I did.
Not sure what a Patsy pie is, but the pastillos are not to be mistaken for Jamaican Meat Patties, mon.
10:26 am on October 7th, 2013
Staff: How is Mr. Staff’s ankle this morning?
10:28 am on October 7th, 2013
Patsypie??? !!!!! NOOOOOOOO !
10:32 am on October 7th, 2013
In the 30s in North Pole and snowing. Anchorage is 10 degrees warmer and no snow yet except on the mountain tops and it has been raining. This should be my last trip by car; if I have to return, it will be by plane. So tired and getting paranoid that with all this driving I will have an accident when I am so close to being permanently moved. I head back tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest.
Does it seem to you that we are quicker to take our pets to the vet than ourselves? Hmmm.
10:45 am on October 7th, 2013
C Hobbit, Definitely Barb would take me to the doc much sooner than she would take herself. With herself, it’s always see how it goes. With me, it’s take no chances.
10:54 am on October 7th, 2013
CHobbit – your paranoia is a very normal reaction. “So close and yet so far” brings all the fear to the forefront.
You will be fine. You will complete your road trips and settle into your lovely little hobbit hole in Anchorage and live a long and happy life with adorable Sadie, the Mustached Lady.
Melanie – pasties are Cornish and are filled with leftover meats, potatoes and turnips. They are also about 12″ across and are baked.
Fried pies are smaller, greasier, and usually have a sweet filling. And NEVER turnips. The dough for pastillos is a little different and have a meat filling, but once again, we think it is only Cornwallers who would use turnips as filling.
11:01 am on October 7th, 2013
You mean turnips actually have a use?
CHobbit: Safe travels and get settled soon with your beautiful girl.
Melanie: Congrats on the sleep.
Rose: Hope tonight brings sweet dreams
Whoo hoo: We now be expert on little Pie-like foods 🙂
11:21 am on October 7th, 2013
Hobbit, We will be happy when your trips to north pole and back are over. Probably, you will be even happier.
By the way, we finally remembered to check the status of that package, and see it arrived last Monday.
12:21 pm on October 7th, 2013
C.Hobbit, May your travels with Sadie be safe. Your new home is waiting for you!
12:23 pm on October 7th, 2013
HOH: I thought sleeping medication was supposed to HELP you sleep. I think not….sigh
12:23 pm on October 7th, 2013
Help! Pop locked the bedroom doors, and we need to get in there RIGHT NOW, because there are things we need to look for under the bed!!!!
12:25 pm on October 7th, 2013
Then there are the plain old Meat Pies in Louisiana. I think they are baked, and oh so yummy. Mom’s mom used to get frozen ones to put in mom’s lunch. (cooked, not frozen) Just thinking about it she is back in second grade at lunch, mmmmm.
Beau, congrats on your team’s win yesterday. It was just a matter of who had the ball when the clock ran out.
12:35 pm on October 7th, 2013
OH: If it is Booming and ya’ll can’t get under the bed, we have used bathtubs or made a lagre pile of puppies to keep each other in paw and safe.
12:38 pm on October 7th, 2013
That is a nice review with no spoilers,
C.Hobbit, Another definate on mom taking me to the vet much more often than she goes to the doctor.
Have a safe trip. You are almost finished!!
Macy, If the Cowboys hadn’t been playing the Broncos, I would have been cheering for the Cowboys. I just want you to know that.
Rebecca, We hope you feel better soon. Take care of yourself.
12:42 pm on October 7th, 2013
Blue sky here, high of 76 degrees, and hot air balloons floating around in the sky.
1:13 pm on October 7th, 2013
We LOVE turnips around here. We liked the big yellow ones cooked and mashed with butter. We like the little ones chunked and simmer. We like ‘me roasted or grated raw on a salad. Turnips are our friends!
Beets on the other hand….
1:29 pm on October 7th, 2013
I love rutabagas, which are yellow and delicious mashed with or without potatoes. I don’t love the white turnips. I love beet greens. Beets, not so much unless they are in borscht. I do have the last harvest of beets to use in some way, today or tomorrow.
I woke up in the middle of the night and had to read a little to
get back to sleep.
It is raining.
2:02 pm on October 7th, 2013
Dawson: Rain beats snow this time of year.
2:13 pm on October 7th, 2013
Mom just said she likes parsnips, but says they are really hard to find in the south. They must be ’cause we don’t know anything about them. She missed fresh artichoke, too.
2:28 pm on October 7th, 2013
O’Howlers, when there are big boomers and lightning, I throw the Rose quilt over my head.
2:29 pm on October 7th, 2013
Hoping that the Pixie and Tenzing are feeling a bit better.
3:57 pm on October 7th, 2013
Oooo – parsnips. Yum!
Never had an artichoke.
There is a big bad storm coming. Mama and the Storyteller are out doing errands. Hope they get home before it get much worse. We are home making sure that Gramp doesn’t get too scared.
5:03 pm on October 7th, 2013
Dawson, Barb never thought she liked beets till she grew some two or three years ago. Boiled, peeled and then covered with butter, s & p, they are delish!
Well, the chicken chili is in the pot. Went with HOH’s basic recipe then tweeked it (tweek, not twerk, heh hee). Going to add some half and half at the end, and maybe a little sour cream. No cream of chicken soup, as it has MSG in it.
5:14 pm on October 7th, 2013
Wose: According to the Giant, I’ve been sleeping a lot more than usual the past couple of days. My Lady had a very rough night and thought she may have to go to the ER. She couldn’t stop getting sick to her stomach and had fever. She did manage a couple of hours of sleep and feels a little better today.
Howlers: If you blur to where my Lady is, you can hang out under her parent’s bed. Their bed sits up high and is on very soft carpet. If it gets better than that, I don’t know about it.
5:56 pm on October 7th, 2013
Tenzing, I am very worrit about you and your Lady. I hope you both feel better soon. Stay snug under the quilt.
5:59 pm on October 7th, 2013
B&M: You “tweekings” sound like a nice change to the chili.
Rose: Mom doesn’t blame you with the quilt in the boomers. She saw/herd very little Boom/Flash growing up and still gets a little apprehensive.
The rackery coon has discovered mom’s autumn display of pumpkins on the front porch and comes by at night.Who coons ate pumpkin?
5:59 pm on October 7th, 2013
The storms are over. Mom and pop are home. We were never scared; just concerned about those dust mites under the bed. Sometimes when a bad storm blows up, they can wreak havoc.
We are all twirling twirling twirling here!!! We received our very special, personally autographed and pawtographed copy of TSATF. And along with it, we received a paperback copy ot A Cat Was Involved!!! How cool is that!!! Thanks very much, Spence and Chet.
6:00 pm on October 7th, 2013
(Last sentence) Who KNEW coons ate pumpkins?
6:06 pm on October 7th, 2013
Dawson, Mom never thought she liked beets either, because all she had growing up were those red beets that are sickeningly sweet. Now, she gets a delicious beet salad every time she gets a chance at her favorite restaurant. She is not sure how he prepares them, but suspects they are similar to the way barb does hers.
Bella and Tenzing, please stay under the quilt, until you get better. (Bella, get thee to a doctor).
7:20 pm on October 7th, 2013
That was an interesting storm. All well here. No tornados. Lots of wind and rain. Glad we had the old sick Maple taken down.
Tenzing and SnowBella stay under the quilt. Another of us is coming under too.
Grace is nosing herself under there. She makes a great pillow. Grace has cancer. Not sure how long she will be with us. She is in no pain, runs and has fun. Of course, she will be high as a kite.
Sorry about the bad news. Understand though, she has no problem with this. We are doing a bit of sniffling now and then. Then she just woofs at us and wants more to eat.
7:21 pm on October 7th, 2013
I won’t be back tonight. Sometimes you just need to listen to music and hug your dog.
7:30 pm on October 7th, 2013
Hi guys,
CHobbit – Mom Maggie was very worried about Abigail when Abbie was a little kitty. Abbie had the sniffles and a cough. Mom wanted me to take her in to the emergency vet. Meanwhile Mom had terrible bronchitis and was waiting another week to her scheduled Doc. visit. I asked her “You want me to take the cat in to the emergency vet but YOU won’t go in to your regular doctor???” She went and had antibiotics. She was really sick. We both thought she gave Abbie her cold.
And Mr.Staff has a cracked fibula and a fancy 175.00 boot which he says is very uncomfortable. We had the Xrays close to home but we had to drive 100+ miles round trip to have them read by an Xpert. Just got back. (and I had to drive darn it because it is his right ankle that is cracked) It looks like it is in line and will only need to stay compressed, not operated on. I have decided Mr.Staff has weak bones. Twice in one year!
7:31 pm on October 7th, 2013
Rebecca!…I am now officially worrit about Rebecca…sniff!…And everyone else who is sick as a dawg…wuffle!
7:31 pm on October 7th, 2013
Oh Melanie. dainty licks
7:33 pm on October 7th, 2013
Melanie, Please tell Gracie that we love her.
One wonderful thing about Dogs and Kats is they do not have any worries about being disabled or terminally ill. They like things just the way they are…as long as they get their treats and their tummies.
7:38 pm on October 7th, 2013
Ah Grace…having fun and feeling no pain–we will count those two things as a blessing. Stay close to Zoe and Melanie; no, closer–they need you close
7:40 pm on October 7th, 2013
Melanie, Grace and I have the same problem: Worried moms. That is all that is wrong with us. I am so sure that she is feeling as tip top today as I am. O.K. Maybe more than me today, because i am in my non-eating phase. But tomorrow, I know both of us will be up-and-at-’em.
Having said that, it is time for me to say goodnight to all of youse. Mom and Pop are tired from some sort of stress that i’m sure i don’t understand.
7:57 pm on October 7th, 2013
Sending extra scratchers and bellies to Grace. Tenzing, Dima, Rebecca and Melanie, if you don’t know that we here all love ya’ll and are concerned about ya’ll, there is something seriously wrong. Mr. Staff, Do as the dr. says so you’ll be tip top in March.
Mom’s been fighting a migraine all day so don’t know how long the HOH will be here tonight.
8:10 pm on October 7th, 2013
We will keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers tonight. Sleep well, worry and pain free.
8:16 pm on October 7th, 2013
Dima, Grace and Tenzing. You three stay close to your ladies tonight. They might need the worry loved out of them.
HOH: Those raccoons have good taste. Pumpkins are delish.
Mr. Staff: Ouch! For $175. one would think the boot would be comfortable.
8:22 pm on October 7th, 2013
I am skipping and twirling! I ordered TSATF from Spence’s last tour stop, RJ Julia books, and it is signed and paw printed. I too, received a paperback copy of A Cat Was Involved! Thank you Spence and Chet.
8:27 pm on October 7th, 2013
To all those who are ailing , you are in my thoughts, and wrapped in my love.
8:28 pm on October 7th, 2013
Mr. Staff – we think you should ask your most wonderful and lovely wife to wrap you in a gigantic quilt and store you in a class fronted cabinet so you won’t get broken any more.
Grace and Dima and Tenzing are all very lucky dogs. Their moms love them, and will take the best care of them, come h e l l or high water. They get to BE dogs, to live their lives in the joy of tummies and treats, and know that hugs are always available in unlimited supply.
Tomorrow is the big day around here. Mama is trying to find her Golden Retriever colored pants so she can play with a certain Ruff Rider devil dawg and no one will notice the fur.
8:28 pm on October 7th, 2013
Rio – did you ever get your postcard? If not, we think you should have a serious talk with your mailman!
8:41 pm on October 7th, 2013
Tupper!…We got a postcard, but it was not sent from the beach…sniff!…I know because it did not have lobsters on it…grunt!…My friend told me to say Thank Youse anyways. So thanks for reminding me to say thanks, I think..heh!
8:42 pm on October 7th, 2013
Oh yeah…
I was supposed to go to the Post Office. The day was so wet and apple crisp needed to be made. The PO was forgotten.
8:44 pm on October 7th, 2013
Dawson!…Speaking of flakey mailmen and postal service in general, did you get the Poppies and Daisies today?…sniffle!snoffle!
8:44 pm on October 7th, 2013
Grump!
8:45 pm on October 7th, 2013
Teddy Ruff Rider is having another meet and greet! Nice.
8:52 pm on October 7th, 2013
Twirling here about my big day tomorrow too. I’ve got to put on my very best devil dog show for all of our honored guests.
8:54 pm on October 7th, 2013
Who stole my avatar. I bet it was those marauding goatees I have heard about!
9:16 pm on October 7th, 2013
Teddy!….I suggest you grab you-know-who by her Golden Retriever colored pant leg and don’t let go!…heh!heh!
9:41 pm on October 7th, 2013
I’m fading fast even though it isn’t that late. The Tigers lost earlier today and nothing on tv so going to bed to read for awhile.
10:37 pm on October 7th, 2013
Grunt!…Why is everyone mad at me?..sniff!…That’s the way it feels anyways…grump!
11:03 pm on October 7th, 2013
Rio, I am not mad at you and I am sure no one else is either.
It has been one of our slow days on the blog and several are under the quilt.
I have been driven nearly mad by all the noise the roofers made today. gah They will return tomorrow.
Night All
11:30 pm on October 7th, 2013

Hey Rio, we miss your friend on the blog. She says she is being good at her new job. sniff. What a bore.

I rarely leave a response, however after reading some of
the responses on this page Chet The Dog : From the Cape Cod Times.
I do have some questions for you if it’s okay.
Could it be simply me or does it give the impression like some
of these responses come across as if they are written by brain dead visitors?
😛 And, if you are writing at additional online social sites, I would
like to follow anything new you have to post. Could you make a list of every one of your shared pages like

Hello there! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this site?
I’m getting fed up of WordPress because I’ve had problems with hackers and I’m looking at alternatives
for another platform. I would be awesome if
you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
