Friend of the Month Reminder
“Powerless for thirty hours,” says Admin. “How did we do?”
“Let’s just say our dreams of going off the grid and living the simpler life need some revision,” Spence says. “But now we’re back, and just in time to remind everybody that today is the last day of the month – “
” – and also Halloween. Love those pumpkin seeds.”
” – and therefore the last day of eligibility for November’s Friend of the Month contest. All you have to do is upload a photo to the Friends of Chet gallery. The random # generator does the rest! If you’re already in the gallery you’re eligible till the crack of doom.”
“Which just about happened down in New York and New Jersey. I heard the Gowanus Canal lapped right up to Buzzfeed reporter Rosie Gray’s doorstep in Brooklyn. Is she eligible for the prize, by the way?”
“No. Prize is a signed – and paw-printed – copy of A Fistful of Collars and the winning Friend of the Month is displayed for the entire month in the special place over on the right where Fragment is now. Easy, fun, and we’ll throw in a free hiking vacation in the Carpathian mountains.”*
* All 100% true except for the Carpathian mountains part.
Welcome Ginger & Stormy.

Good morning Chet, Spencer, Admin!!!! We are so glad to hear from youse. Now it seems that everyone is present and accounted for.
Still no power here, but that generator is cranking away.
7:30 am on October 31st, 2012
So happy to know Spence is back. 30 hours without power is no fun, but better than those in New Jersey and New York.
Barb is going to attend a wax museum at Lily’s school this morning. The kids will be dressed as historical characters, and as you walk along you push a button and they say a sentence about their character. Fun and educational at the same time.
7:48 am on October 31st, 2012
Yay!!! OFA is back!
Whew. Now we can breathe easier.
Good Morning to Chet, Spence and Admin & All.
Sage the Mage at the top!
7:50 am on October 31st, 2012
Hi Spencer, Admin, Peter, Chet and Bernie. Sure do hope you didn’t lose anything on the computer when the lights went out!
YSAS and SO are still fine. They are above the blackout now. If you go on YSAS’s Facebook, he’s put up a picture of where the blackout begins.
OTAS and GLAD will not have power for about a week. Problem? Finding a gas station with power. Luckily, OTAS had filled up his hybrid and they can syphon off gas from his car for the generator.
On the other paw, since things have been very busy for the past year, I’m recycling last year’s card.
8:07 am on October 31st, 2012
Good Morning All!
I’m so glad Chet, Bernie, SPence, and Admin are safe!
Maggie: Sounds like Barb will have a lot of fun!
Love the card, Melanie!
8:15 am on October 31st, 2012
Perhaps we would meet Vlad the Impaler, aka Dracula, in the Carpathian Mountains.
Glad everything is okay Spence.
Love the card Melanie.
Good morning all.
8:23 am on October 31st, 2012
Happy Halloween! We love Halloween, but the problem is that we never get trick-or-treaters all the way back here on the farm. Mom wishes she could buy a town house just to use at Halloween and during the Oley Fair and the parades.
B&M, we love the idea of the wax museum with historical characters. Take pictures for this here blog?
8:26 am on October 31st, 2012
Good morning all, and happy Halloween. One of Donna’s colleagues is among the many Long Islanders who are without power, so she did the good karma thing. They showed up last night, and we gave them an actual hot meal and the spare bedroom. Those of you who are familiar with the works of Edward Gorey will likely appreciate this shot of his back yard in Cape Cod.

8:34 am on October 31st, 2012
Edward Gorey lives in Cape Cod? Cool.
We have had exactly 2 years out of 11 years when T 0r Ts came. Sigh.
Nothing for the past 9 years. . .
8:37 am on October 31st, 2012
Love the Haloween pictures Melanie and Terry.
We have not had trick or treaters for the past 6 years. Never had one at the farm. This year we will have several hundred. We are well stocked with candy.
Oleys, Barb will take the camera along. Lily is a women who worked for women’s right to vote, but not Susan B. Anthony. Can’t remember her name.
8:38 am on October 31st, 2012
Actually lived in Cape Cod. He died about ten years ago, and they’ve turned his house into a museum. If I remember correctly, it’s in Yarmouth.
8:40 am on October 31st, 2012
Back!… Spencer and the gang are back. I hope he is hard at work on the next Chet and Bernie adventure…snort!…The one with NO NAME, as of yet….grunt!…I guess there is still time to enter Titles…sniff!..If I could only think of some more…
8:43 am on October 31st, 2012
Good morning all and welcome back to OFA.
Bee – we are surprised at you. Thinking that anyone would seriously worry about meeting Dracula in the Carpathian Mountains. Everyone KNOWS there is no such thing as the Carpathian Mountains……
sheesh.
Howlers, Rose, Terry, OTAS &GLAD, we hope you have full recovery very soon.
9:10 am on October 31st, 2012
Have a fun day, Barb.
We will be gone until tomorrow afternoon. It is Halloween after all. Hope everyone gets lots of treats and no tricks.
Good luck to you know who tomorrow, otherwise known as Rio and Princess Sam. Maybe we’ll see one of youse up top?
9:13 am on October 31st, 2012
Barb: Is Lily going to be Elizabeth Cady Stanton?
9:54 am on October 31st, 2012
Spence is back! Who? Us? Worried? Nah…..
10:07 am on October 31st, 2012
Spence, Welcome back! We are glad you are okay. We can stop worrying now.
Stover, Dracula is the first thing I thought of when I read the Carpathian Mountains. Mom and I would take the free hiking vacation in the Carpathian Mountains. They must be beautiful. Wolves still live there…just like in Dracula.
Still love the Halloween card, Melanie
Happy Halloween everyone.
10:14 am on October 31st, 2012
For all you Johnny Depp fans:
He has donated $25,000 to the Navajo Nation to go toward education. This was suppose to be a secret (yeah, right) but it got leaked to the press.
Weather here: A high of 73 degrees but the skies aren’t exactly blue. We have smoke from a controlled burn in the mountains. gasp
.
10:14 am on October 31st, 2012
By the way, for his novel Dracula, Bram Stoker probably based his character’s name on the real Vlad whose patronymic was Dracula, which derives from Latin draco meaning dragon.
10:19 am on October 31st, 2012
I have seen Vlad’s castle on the History Channel. I think I would rather meetup with Dracula than Vlad.
10:19 am on October 31st, 2012
No sign of high winds, and scattered showers are a possibility. Luna and Masquers have been cleared for take off….
XOXOXOXO

Rio! I made it to the busy place!
10:29 am on October 31st, 2012
It is raining again here. We so much want to see the SUN. Wose, how did you get to your busy place? Surely no train service yet? Did Luna drop you off on her way out?
10:33 am on October 31st, 2012
Hello Plunderers! Guess what guess what guess what? Mama Meash and Daddy Deem have given me my Official Husky License. They say I am now properly trained to be a for-real Siberian Husky. I used to be one of those dopes who always came to Mommy and Daddy when they called me, and sucked up whenever possible. Now I have learned the correct action: When I am asked to come, I can lie still and outstare them. I can act like I really don’t care if they want a hug or not. I will sit when told, but I am working on that one yet. Progress progress!
10:38 am on October 31st, 2012
I am very proud of you, Kat. You have, indeed, become an honored member of our tribe.
My mom is setting here laughing. I don’t know what it is she thinks is so funny.
10:45 am on October 31st, 2012
Siber H: LOL regarding meeting Vlad.
11:17 am on October 31st, 2012
Bee, Yes it is Elizabeth Stanton.
11:32 am on October 31st, 2012
Just realized that I had bought treats for Halloweeners tonight and I work from 3:00-7:30. Duh. I tell you being blond and gray is a double whammy in terms of brain functions. Phooey.
11:46 am on October 31st, 2012
CHobbitt: But, but, but…
I thought you were retired.
11:56 am on October 31st, 2012
Dawson…I am transitioning into retirement. This job gives me people contact and there is no stress. I have 3 days off and the evening hours I work leave the days free for me. And the income helps me get used to my retirement income. I expect to phase out of working this spring and be fully retired.
11:58 am on October 31st, 2012
Just came back up the hill. Short stop to see Golinka and Storyteller. They are fine. Golinka gave me a magnet that says, “Oh, I just had a thought . . Nope, it’s gone.”
Thought you’d enjoy that C.Hobbit.
Dawson, maybe she forgot she was retired. .
Picture of the skyline of NYC at night. Not sure who took it.
12:05 pm on October 31st, 2012
Kat – tsk tsk. Don’t be in such a hurry to grow up.
Siber – we aren’t sure that you qualify as a Siber. You DID come to our Mama when she called. Ok, so was holding bacon at the time. Never the less…..
CHobbit. – many of our neighbors just put their lights on and leave a bowl of candy on the front porch. When it’s gone, it’s gone. And there isn’t any temptation left in the house.
12:21 pm on October 31st, 2012
We’re considering putting out a bowl of bird seed.
12:44 pm on October 31st, 2012
Kat, I am so proud of you!
OHs: I had the privilege of blurring to work with mama Luna, and my dear friend Masquers. How exciting blurring is!!!
1:39 pm on October 31st, 2012
Does anyone else have concerns about the more extreme weather conditions that are occuring? We believe that these are not isolated events, but instead are going to be coming with more frequency and more intensity. It may be because we are doing so much damage to our planet with over poluting and over consumption. Global warming?
1:39 pm on October 31st, 2012
Heard from my guys and gal. GLAD is COLD! The fireplace does not heat the room as well as a wood stove would, but when they first mored in they had to fix the chimney and that cost as much as the wood stove. They could only do the one.
I have sent them a cast iron double pie plate that you use to cook sandwiches over the fire in the fireplace. Otherwise they are cooking outside using their camping gear.
OTAS tried to find gas. Notice the “tried”. No joy there.
YSAS has been very careful, but somewhere got a bite of gluten. He is now recovering.
He also says . . “Inside the Black out zone people are overly nice and caring. Making sure everyone is ok. But where power is on and traffic lights work. People honk and ignore the traffic signals because they are in an emergency. Make sense right ?” That was from his Facebook page. When he was telling me this morning, there were a lot of words that he didn’t put in his Facebook page. snicker.
1:45 pm on October 31st, 2012
Hi Barb and MagPie! commented at the same time.
I know that the earth is heating up, but I do like the words Global Climate Change better than Global Warming.
Some places are colder than usual. Dubai got snow. So did New Zealand. Drought is still on going. Heat waves in strange places. Arctic Ice melting. Permafrost melting. Weird.
Changing weather patterns no matter what you call it.
1:47 pm on October 31st, 2012

Depp!…25 grand to him is like giving a quarter…grunt!…What a tight-@ss-dip-wad…grump!
2:13 pm on October 31st, 2012
Laughing here, Staff.
Anyone that knows where I can get as inexpensive bird ornament set please email me. Going to do a small Christmas tree dedicated to Raven. Thought all birds would really please him. Thanks.
Time for a break.
2:21 pm on October 31st, 2012
Hi, Rio!
2:29 pm on October 31st, 2012
Melanie – you are in luck and at a good time. Go to just about any craft store – Michael’s, ACMoore, Ben Franklin, etc. they have feather/styrofoam birds that come individually and in multi packs.
And since today is Halloween, you may be able to find black ones on clearance!
(Mama’s favorite word)
2:36 pm on October 31st, 2012
We certainly think the wierd weather has to do with the melting of the Arctic ice. Whether you call that global warming, or climate change, the 2-leggeds need to stop squabbling about it and DO SOMETHING. They ar wrecking the planet for the rest of us.
2:39 pm on October 31st, 2012
Rose!…I can’t believe you went into the busy-place today…grunt!…You could have called in Wet….snort!
3:21 pm on October 31st, 2012
Had my doubts about safely blurring Rose, but Luna assured me it would be no problem and it wasn’t! We dropped her by the busy place then took off for home.
I agree with Riö…$25,000 is a mere pittance for Depp…too embarrassingly small to mention.
Whether you call it global warming or warning…things they are a’changing.
You would never guess that photo was of the NYC skyline.
3:25 pm on October 31st, 2012
Rio! I have to remember that excuse for the next time I don’t want to go to the busy place. heh heh
3:28 pm on October 31st, 2012
Barb here – I had Eric, my go-to guy who Mags does not like, over this afternoon. He always carries a drill, hammer or nail gun, and makes lots of noise. Here is where I found Maggie when he left.

3:30 pm on October 31st, 2012
Magpie!…heh!snort!heh!… Good hiding place….snort!
4:12 pm on October 31st, 2012
Tupper & Gilly: I could put my treats out at 2:30 before I go to work but they’d be frozen and covered by blowing snow by the time the trick or treaters arrive at 5:30 or so. Plus I mostly have ‘healthy snacks’ like those little boxes of raisins and yogurt-covered raisins so they’d be like stones when they got them home. Part of the fun of Halloween is seeing the little kids in costumes (even covered by winter gear they are cute).
I had even shoveled yet again the driveway to make it easier on the tykes. Oh well. I deliver Meals On Wheels on Mondays so might add them to their lunches as a treat.
4:23 pm on October 31st, 2012
Here is a picture of one of the kitchen cabinets first started and then painted black and with brushed nickel knobs.

4:39 pm on October 31st, 2012
Barb. Very nice. Is that where MagPie is hiding?
Zoe and I talked about Raven’s tree. Feathers . . allergies . . bummer.
Since the glass ornaments go at about $10 or more, those were out.
Then she hit on it . . origami birds!
I said that was perfect. When Raven went to Japan the last time, he visited a school. They had made him 1,000 origami doves. Have no idea where those got to since it was 15 years ago, but we’re going to get a kit and make birds.
I think we won’t do 1,000, but we should have fun.
4:39 pm on October 31st, 2012
Oh, and YSAS’s emails for extra work are all saying “Must be able to self report.”
Yeah, that is an interesting concept.
4:49 pm on October 31st, 2012
2.6 million years ago the Ice Age started and it isn’t over yet. We’re still coming off of it so yes the globe is warming. Whether we’re hastening the inevitable is the big question.
4:54 pm on October 31st, 2012
Barb, if the Prof and I ever do move, could I hire you to do the decorating? The cabinets are gorgeous!
5:00 pm on October 31st, 2012
We love Barb’s black cabinets. Even better is Maggie’s hiding spot.
Kat doesn’t get it, but she only has her Learner’s Permit. This afternoon, she got cold and wanted indoors to curl up in the Big Bed. Some husky she is.
5:00 pm on October 31st, 2012
Luna, I know you are used to blurring four-legged’s who weigh less than me. I hope you did not injure yourself blurring me to the busy place this morning.
Masquers seemed a little uncertain of whether or not my blurring could be done.
I hope youse guys didn’t run into any bad weather…..
Thank you Luna and Masquers for getting me to my busy place! You rock!
5:05 pm on October 31st, 2012
It’s raining kats & dawgs here. Not a good night for the twick or tweeters to be out.
5:10 pm on October 31st, 2012
One more kitchen shot, then I won’t bore you any more. This shows top cabinets done, and the new appliances. Love the fridge!

5:26 pm on October 31st, 2012
Lovely kitchen Barb. (It’s not boring to see the pictures.)
5:28 pm on October 31st, 2012
Barb, that kitchen is stunning. Can I have it?
5:32 pm on October 31st, 2012
Callie is getting into the “spirit” of Halloween. Here she is in her costume. She is going as a poodle. (Notice the front legs)

5:33 pm on October 31st, 2012
Your fridge looks like ours, Barb (minus all the husky rubs). The stove, not so much. Mom has stove envy now.
6:10 pm on October 31st, 2012
T&G, Callie looks like a sweetheart.
6:14 pm on October 31st, 2012
G&BB, just want youse guys to know that I am holding your dad close to my heart, and sending healing prayers his way. I am thinking of your mom too, sending comforting thoughts and holding her just as close to my heart as well.
Sending youse two tender rubs, scritches, and head bumps.
6:28 pm on October 31st, 2012
Melanie – How does YSAS find gluten-free food with his busy life in a big city?
6:34 pm on October 31st, 2012
We knew Callie was a poodle even before you told us. She doesn’t look totally happy with her costume however.
Rose, you can have the kitchen – we will blurr it over to you. Oley, Barb loves her new GE Profile range, but it is harder to keep it looking nice then her old white one. Little finger prints and nose prints show up!
6:36 pm on October 31st, 2012
MollyPop’s Mom, very carefully.
Barb, the kitchen looks great. I’m finally seeing the hiding place. Not sure why it wasn’t showing up before.
6:43 pm on October 31st, 2012
Barb – the kitchen is lovely. We do understand about the stainless appliances though. We found a great cleaner specifically for them thru the old Fuller Brush Company. Yup – they do still exist.
We are SOOO tired of political commercials!
6:52 pm on October 31st, 2012
Crane!…We are watching the news and listening to the poor engineers that had to check out that dangling crane in NYC…wheeze!…Engineering is not supposed to be that exciting!
6:56 pm on October 31st, 2012
Trick or treating is supposed to end at 7:00. We are glad it is ending. Time to relax and watch some tv. Later.
7:00 pm on October 31st, 2012
Again, no tricker treaters.
Going to head to bed . .
7:10 pm on October 31st, 2012
MagPie, do you like the trick or treaters?
7:26 pm on October 31st, 2012
Tricksters!…We hate those treatie tricksters…sniff!… I decided to come downstairs and leave the Yeeping! to Beau. My friend and I are going to watch a version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow right now…snort!…She says there is popcorn in our future….heh!heh!
7:30 pm on October 31st, 2012
I am dressed up tonight for Halloween but my two-legged isn’t home to take pictures of me. I told her I am going as a pug dressed as a pug and she still hasn’t rushed home to worship me.
7:35 pm on October 31st, 2012
Costume!…Bellie only a real Pug can go as a Pug dressed as a Pug…grunt!…Fer instance me or Beau could go as a pug dressed as a pug because we are Pugs…snort!
7:39 pm on October 31st, 2012
Rio: what if I wear one pug costume over the other?
7:42 pm on October 31st, 2012
Hot!…Well, Bellie, you would be a Husky wearing one pug costume over the other…snort!
7:48 pm on October 31st, 2012
I was worried that we wouldn’t have any trick or treaters. So I put out Dawson’s ceramic pumpkin with a candle in it. It is on the porch steps.
7:49 pm on October 31st, 2012
Then I carved a little pie pumpkin and put it on the table by the door.

7:52 pm on October 31st, 2012
Tomorrow I go to Jacqueline’s Dog Salon for grooming and wonderfluffing so I’ll be ready for my FOM selection.
7:52 pm on October 31st, 2012
I had 3 bags of fun size candy bars. Butterfingers, Snickers and Nestle’s Crunch. I have 3 left. YES! That is about 70 bars.
I will leave the lights on for a little longer. Maybe till 8 and then blow out all the candles and keep the rest of the candy.
While I was getting food for Dad Mom was in charge of the door. If she saw someone on the porch she was supposed to ring that bell. My it is loud! But it worked.
First Halloween with trick or treaters since I moved to the farm 24 years ago.
7:54 pm on October 31st, 2012
Oh, Funny story.
One mother was waiting for her kids and walking her standard poodle. A big white one with a lion cut around her face. I said “Nice dog” and she said “It’s really a Lab”. It took me a minute to figure that out. Too funny.
7:59 pm on October 31st, 2012
Staff!…Do you have 3 bags of candy left or 3 candy bars left?….heh!heh!
8:02 pm on October 31st, 2012
Sammie, Actually Barb shut me in her bedroom, because she was afraid I would bolt out the front door when she opened it. She is a lunatic about losing me. I am tagged and chipped, but she still worries. If someone took me, they would probably bring me back! hahaha
Why is the time on the blog central time rather than eastern?
Happy Halloween everyone, and good night.
8:10 pm on October 31st, 2012
Having recovered from Sandy, we actually had a very nice Halloween. Probably 125+ kids. We are also very popular in the neighborhood — known as the house with the full size candy bars. Something that I insist on every year.
Wookie
8:14 pm on October 31st, 2012
Well, we had 2 more trick or treaters this year than we had last year. These came with a dad carrying 4 cans of IPAs for us. We knew who they all were right away. Perhaps because nobody had any costumes on, and only one girl had a mask. But we still knew who she was. heh heh Nobody pulls one over on us guys.
Still running on generator here. Mom wants us to tell youse that she finally took her first post-Sandy shower. We liked her smell befor the shower. It was so “her” x 10.
8:20 pm on October 31st, 2012
By the way, we love Callie’s costume, and Staff’s pumpkins. This is the first year we didn’t even have any of our jack-o-lanterns out, nor the ghost hanging from the tree. Maybe thats why those 2 trick-or-treaters came by. Maybe they were all too scared other years?
8:21 pm on October 31st, 2012
Candy!….Wow!…All that candy given to treatie tricksters and none for me….grunt!….I hate Halloweenie..sniff!
8:57 pm on October 31st, 2012
Mommy was catching up on the jigzone puzzles that Staff got her started on. Eek a spider. No way!
9:12 pm on October 31st, 2012
Sam. I didn’t do the spider either. I hate spiders and couldn’t even do a puzzle of them.
Rio. 3 Candy bars, silly.
Wookie, We gave out ‘fun’ sized bars.
Congrats on the shower OHowlers mom.
9:18 pm on October 31st, 2012
Staff!…You mean to tell me you ate all those other candy bars?…snort!…You are not supposed to be eating stuff like that you know…wufffle!…Me either…grump!
11:53 pm on October 31st, 2012
I trick or treated in the kennel tonight. I got a harness remnant from Annabelle, a bone from Garcia, a head bump from Wyatt, a tackle from Lefty, and a rock from Gomez. Junior said he thought about going as a sled pug dressed as a pug, but decided against it at the last minute. Jackson was telling spooky stories in the back of the kennel; both my two-legged and my four-legged told me to come inside and not listen any further because I would get scared.
Next year, I want to go trick or treating at Wookie’s house.
11:59 pm on October 31st, 2012
I am glad Masquers and I stayed with Wose and the Professor for the storm. We blurred Wose to work today. She doesn’t wiggle nearly as much as AJ, but boy, can that girl giggle. She followed the rules of keeping the wiggles to a minimum, going to the bathroom before we left and she brought snacks which she shared. We made sure she was situated at her busy place before we left. I think Wose was a bit nervous that some people would think we shouldn’t be there. My approach in such situations is simple. When you come across a fan of our kind, roll over for a belly rub and they forget any and all rules about no four-leggeds very quickly. If they are the type that don’t think our kind belongs and give you the you-don’t-belong-here stare, the best approach is to give them the same you-don’t-belong-here stare in return. In either case, it is best to act like you belong and if all else fails, ignore any rules or misgivings.
12:34 am on November 1st, 2012
Barb: The cabinets look beautiful. I bet you can’t wait to complete the task.
Maggie: Maybe if you asked Barb kindly, she wouldn’t rub her nose on the fridge and then you wouldn’t have to deal with all those nose smudges on the stainless steel.
Okay, time for bed.
