Friend of the Month Reminder
Last day of the month already? That means it’s time for the reminder. You can be Chet’s Friend of the Month – check out the link over on the right. Just upload a photo! Human companion gets a signed and paw-printed copy of the latest C&B, and the Friend is up there for the whole month. Is this more fun than circus clown? Definitely, if the circus clown is the dude from TO FETCH A THIEF, his appeal lying elsewhere.

Are we getting a friend of the month on the blog again or is this just for Facebook?
Good morning all.
8:43 am on August 31st, 2015
Good morning, everyone!
9:06 am on August 31st, 2015
Greetings!
It is a hot, humid, overcast day in my neck of the woods. In a word yucky. I thought it was supposed to start being cooler this time of year. Dare I say I can not wait for temps in the 20’s and lots of snow?
The Yankees won yesterday…that makes me very happy!
Love today’s GOOGLE doodle, celebrating the start of the U.S. Open. I think I will blur over there and try out that “Tomahawk Chop.”
9:08 am on August 31st, 2015
Hello everybody. My mommy is playing a game called hookey today. I do not understand this game. So far, it seems to involve the porch, a newspaper, and lots of cawfee. I am sure it will be fun though. Anything beats life in a crate.
9:15 am on August 31st, 2015
Bella Rossa: You are making me laugh! I remember playing hooky lots of times during the years when I had busy places to go to. It’s fun playing hooky!
BTW, will you have your own avatar soon?
9:24 am on August 31st, 2015
Good morning everybody Mom starts a new day camp today so she is shutting me down.
Create a good day!
9:26 am on August 31st, 2015
“After the storm comes calm.” I hope the Proverb is true.
Today’s Google doodle is neat. I think Spence would like it.
9:46 am on August 31st, 2015
Macy! I go to a camp too! Mommy calls it Kat Kamp for some strange reason. But it is mine mine mine.
Wose, sadly, I can only post on this here blog when the others aren’t looking. I do not think they will supply me woth my own avatar. Something about privacy except for the many photos on facebookie. Tee hee!
9:55 am on August 31st, 2015
Bella Rossa: I am not on Facebookie, so unfortunately, I can not look at pictures of you, you, you. It is a treat when your photos do show up on this here blog!
10:09 am on August 31st, 2015
Good morning all
We had a terrible nightmare last night that scared us right down to our little stub tails. Thank goodness we came here today and found that the nightmare was over, and everything at Chets place is ok.
Whew.
Now if our wayward Mama would just come home, life would be good again.

I’m starting a new online course with Future Learn on Wordsworth next Monday. It was filmed at Dove Cottage, his home in the Lake District, and will also show his manuscripts and give info about his sister, Dorothy. (I’ve read her Grasmere Journals and it’s fun comparing her observations to some of his poems.) I think it will be fun. Here’s a link for anyone interested:
https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/william-wordsworth
11:32 am on August 31st, 2015
HRH, B: This course sounds exciting! Is the first time you have taught an on-line course?
T&G: Make sure there youse get plenty of treaties and tummies upon your momma’s arrival home.
Question: I know that Gary Cooper was in 2 Frank Capra films; “Meet John Doe” and “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.” Has anyone seen them? Thumbs up or down? Yesterday was Gary Cooper day on Turner Classics…I missed both films.

Stormy weather!! A big windstorm came out of virtually nowhere on Saturday causing a big power outage here on the coast. No electricity…no water. Yeep!!
Now, we hear-tell there was a huge storm around these here parts last night too.
Thank kat all is well this morning and our beloved blog is okay. ^..^

Hi, B Stover! Just on Facebook, is the answer. There are technical reasons why Friend couldn’t continue here. Please don’t ask me to explain them because I’d do a bad job. Codes, clouds, etc. – Peter
11:45 am on August 31st, 2015
My dearest Masquers: I hope your electricity and water have been restored. It is not fun dealing without the things we take for granted every day. It is terribly hot and humid here…keeping my paws crossed that we do not lose power.
11:51 am on August 31st, 2015
Imagine if I lost water in my apartment…I would no longer be Wose the small and meek, but Wose the small and smelly! :^)
11:54 am on August 31st, 2015
The weather here is not bad. It is still just 81, and the ceiling fan on the front porch feels great.
We have not seen those Gary Cooper films, Wose.
Masquers, was your powee restored?
11:55 am on August 31st, 2015
Thank you Peter. I loved having a Friend of the Month on the blog also but if it can’t be then it can’t be. I’m glad we have the picture of the FB winner here.
Rose: Sorry–my use of “starting” was ambiguous. I’m taking the course. To answer your question, before I retired I did teach a few online courses. I much prefer having the students in a classroom. That is the best way to have active discussions. Online courses though are very beneficial especially for those who can’t get onto campus.
12:10 pm on August 31st, 2015
Rose: It is true…one never appreciates the things we have until they are suddenly taken away. Then too, what we consider basic necessities are luxuries to those less fortunate.
I know one thing…lots of bottled water and food that doesn’t require cooking…are tops on the list of essential things to have on hand in the event of an emergency.
Howlers: Thankfully power was restored shortly before midnight last night. If not, I wouldn’t be here to tell the tail!
12:12 pm on August 31st, 2015
Masquers! We had that storm here in Vancouver, WA Saturday and yesterday. too. No power was lost except for a few moments of Direct TV…..and that is a good thing in my estimation!
The good part of this storm was that the fire areas in the north part of Washington also got a good rain and they needed it so badly. I have a friend with a dairy near Spokane, and can you even imagine being on notice for over 2 weeks that you may have to evacuate 80 cows and a bunch of heifers at any time?
My friend in Idaho Falls says they not only had rain, but quarter size hail! Thang goodness wheat has been harvested as it came on early with the previous heat. All plantlife was duly stripped and that was the end of her flower beds.
12:15 pm on August 31st, 2015
HRH, B: It is funny how preferences differ. Grizz teaches both on-line and on campus. Over the years he has come to like on-line teaching rather than being on campus. Grizz does not like confrontations, and has had to deal with discipline problems in the classroom. Not so with on-line classes.
Howlers: Thanks. Stay cool!
12:18 pm on August 31st, 2015
ALR: It is good to hear that you have gotten some rain there. Watching these fires on the news is dreadful.
12:23 pm on August 31st, 2015
Rose: I can’t remember ever having discipline problems in the classroom. (It must be my fierce look…LOL!) I wouldn’t like that either. When I was department chair I do remember having to meet with students and parents but it didn’t happen often. I taught at a private university and the tuition was so high that parents wouldn’t put up with misbehaving children.
12:37 pm on August 31st, 2015
ALR: The rain was very welcome, but we here were not prepared for such high winds and thus the subsequent power outages. Wind gusts were over 50 mpr, consequently causing havoc all over the area…with trees toppling and basically anything not tied down blown hither and yon.
12:41 pm on August 31st, 2015
HRH B mom always thought her students behaved because she rode a motorcycle (650 Suzuki). On line class sounds fun!
12:44 pm on August 31st, 2015
Masquers, Oregon had those issues, too. Friday afternoon began the snnual Hood to Coast run and those runners really went through some serious stuff. They arrived in Seaside to find that the usual beach party set up with a stage and many pop up covers had been completely blown over by the 65 mph winds! No one was allowed actually on the beach, I hear. All in all is was qwuite a storm and ripped right on up to you folks with a vengence. Glad you are back up and running!

Are Golinka and The Storyteller back home with those poor neglected Corgis yet?
1:19 pm on August 31st, 2015
Wahooooooooo!!!!!
Mama is HOME!
And now, we are going to “help” them unload the truck.
1:51 pm on August 31st, 2015
Teddy and Wookie’s Pa, was it you that mentioned the Hunt for Jack Reacher series? Mom started the first one today during her lunch break and likes it a lot already.
Mom also thinks that the Raine Stockton series will continue. SQ is writing 2 separate series (C&B and Woof). RE: your comment about an ongoing issue being resolved in the last book of the Raine Stockton series, were you surprised? The previous book had led one to believe it would become much more complicated. Mom had very mixed emotions about all of that.
2:28 pm on August 31st, 2015
Royals: Let us hope there is Not Much to Unload!
2:32 pm on August 31st, 2015
ALR: It is a Wonder those Runners weren’t Blown Away!
My Biggest Complaint here was no fresh Cool, cool Water and a Shortage of Snacks.
3:44 pm on August 31st, 2015
I am finishing up Home of the Brave, then have to order Dog Days, which is the last one so far in the Raine Stockton series. Don’t give any spoiler alerts about what issue is resolved. I am thinking it is a romantic issue, but don’t tell me, please.

Last evening before dark I disturbed a wasp nest while weeding the rock garden. 10+ stings and I keep finding more. Took a bunch of pain medicine and Benadryl and slept with ice packs. Not a lot of sleep. But swelling is down except for ankle and bites are mostly itching rather than stinging.
Good day all. I like the idea of “creating a good one.”
3:50 pm on August 31st, 2015
CHobbit, sure are glad your aren’t ‘lergic. Heal quickly.
4:39 pm on August 31st, 2015
C.Hobbit: Thanks for checking in. We were very worried when we read your post on Facebookie last night.
Dog…you’d think those Wasps would be settling in for the Winter.
4:47 pm on August 31st, 2015
BSD: I think having 2 wasp nests (one front and one back) is the reason I have no apples this year. If you have wasps, they kill the bees so no pollination. The nests are hidden in the crannies of the rock garden and rock wall and I need to get some spray and find them. I feel a wee bit sick but it might be the Benadryl.
Sadie has a vet appointment in the late afternoon.

The big news is that the first sitting president since the early 20th century is visiting the state for 3 days and seeing some of Alaska. We expect him to make an announcement dealing with climate change since we are ground zero. He has already announced that Mt. McKinley will go back to it’s original name–Denali (the Native spelling means “The Great One).”
We have had some presidents visit on refueling stops to/from Asia and former presidents on quick non-official visits but Pres. Obama is coming to see our state. Pres. Reagan visited overnight to meet the Pope while the Pope was heading East and the President was heading West (or vis versa). They stopped down in Fairbanks and met in a room at the airport.
Mind you, Alaska is a military state and a Republican state but this is still a big deal. A couple of Republican congressmen even gave interviews saying that his visit is a good thing and we should welcome it. One of my friends at church remarked “I just hope he doesn’t get shot while he is here.” Sadly these are the new times when that might happen. My sister headed downtown hoping to maybe see his motorcade go to his hotel but my schedule didn’t allow me to join her. As young girls, we watched former Pres. Eisenhower go down the street in an open car. We held up a sign and he smiled at us. Memories!
5:08 pm on August 31st, 2015
C.Hobbit: Nana says she would feel much more comfortable if YOU made a VET Appointment along with Sadie. There is no reason for you to suffer.
5:12 pm on August 31st, 2015
Ditto, or is that ankle. Huzzah for Denali!
5:25 pm on August 31st, 2015
Egg-citing times for Alaska. And scary, because yes you are Ground Zero. Mom showed us that before/after picture of the glacier. Why oh why must this serious issue that threatens all of us be made into a political softball? Wah!
5:27 pm on August 31st, 2015
Is softball the right terminology? We always mix up sayings.
6:41 pm on August 31st, 2015
We like that Our POTUS changed the mountain name back to Denli, as it should be. Hope his visit goes well.
7:26 pm on August 31st, 2015
I agree. Denali is the proper name for that majestic place.
7:28 pm on August 31st, 2015
Off to watch Antiques Roadshow. BBL
7:32 pm on August 31st, 2015
CHobbit: Please take good care of yourself. Hope you are tip-top soon!
7:39 pm on August 31st, 2015
O’Howlers: I have been meaning to ask youse…how are Fern and the other girls?
8:10 pm on August 31st, 2015
I have been wondering about the chickens also. I saw the cutest thing on FB…sweaters for chickens with holes so that their wings fit through. Since you were once worrit about them getting cold in the winter, this might help. 🙂
8:22 pm on August 31st, 2015
Ooo…my sister saw a black car which might have held the President go into a parking garage. She was on the downtown park strip from 11-3 and was interviewed by the Channel 2 news so she might be on TV tonight!
8:44 pm on August 31st, 2015
C.Hobbit: Wowzer!
9:02 pm on August 31st, 2015
Hobbit: Sweet! A star is born!
9:05 pm on August 31st, 2015
Off to read…See youse Manana.
9:07 pm on August 31st, 2015
If you think I am a Hobbit, you should see my sister. She is very tiny, a little more than half of me. She never exercises at a gym like I do for 2 hours/day or takes walks like I do twice a day with Sadie. She just does a long hike on Sunday mornings. {{{sigh}}}
9:31 pm on August 31st, 2015
Hobbit – that IS very exciting. We were traveling on a highway once and Pres Clinton was in a motorcade on the other side of the highway. The motorcade was three cars wide, and about seven cars long. There were cops EVERYWHERE along the road. No one was allowed to stop at rest areas or get on the highway on that side.
9:37 pm on August 31st, 2015
And we sympathize about the sister size. If we ate any of the things the Storyteller munches, we would be be wearing a circus tent.
Chocolate, sugar, starches….you name it, he can metabolize it.
Just ain’t fair, I tell ya.
9:38 pm on August 31st, 2015
When I met President Obama there was no security, just Senator Dick Durbin introducing him. There was his motor home parked out back, and about 100-125 people listening to him talk. I walked right up and talked with him afterwards. Amazing huh?
9:41 pm on August 31st, 2015
After all the big doings of the wedding and breaking ground on the addition, it is a welcome relief to start teaching again. I had a dream that school started one day, and when I awoke again school was all done for the year!
I thought that the mountain’s name was Denali already. It wasn’t until I saw a piece on The Daily Show that the official name had not yet changed. Now if we could just get a woman on our currency…
9:42 pm on August 31st, 2015
Amalia, I feel your pain. It would be so much harder to control myself if I had someone living with me who could eat all that stuff when I can’t. Much easier when I am the only one here. At work, my boss is dieting too, so we both eat healthy stuff.
9:49 pm on August 31st, 2015
Hello All,
I apologize for being absent for the last few months. I blinked and summer was over. For the most part I’ve been working in Seward, home for a few hours and then I would fly up and work on a glacier. Then start the cycle over again.
With the end of the season coming I’ve only got one more shift on the glacier and then I’m home to start training. Which reminds me to mention that the dogs are all back home again complete with tails wagging.
And so here goes my thoughts on the last couple of days on the blog. We have dogs who will never get along with each other. I would never run them next to each other but when they are in their place in the team they achieve great things. Flare ups happen and mistakes are made but in the end when each dog respects the boundaries of the others the team works as a unit. Easy to say, hard to teach. A bit like people this scenario requires give and take, forgiveness, re-establishing boundaries and practice. Above all else it requires time, a level head when the flare up is over and focusing on the goal. Again, this is easy to say especially when feelings are hurt and lines are crossed. I can’t even say in this situation if the hurt can be undone. I would say though that I consider all of you friends and family and would hate to see Rio disappear.
Ok, now with that being said I need to also say thank you again for your support. I have thank you cards I need to send out I just haven’t been home long enough to get them out. But please know we sincerely appreciate it.
As always… on the trail….
AJ

Hello Blog Family–I was way late getting back yesterday, but I WAS finally able to see the video of Tupper’s Mama’s shew. A little late, but hey–sparkly things are always good.
Wose, I strengthened for you AND for everyone else who might have needed it yesterday, and now prepare for my first day of the new term tomorrow.
Since it’s nearly night where many of you are, I’ll wish all a good night and a good morning in advance.
(Also, does anyone know if Gotham and Sleepy Hollow will be back this Fall?)(Also, glad Denali gets the real name back.)

A bigger one can cook huge amount of soups and stews.
Then finish off the pasta by cooking it in a pan with sauce for the final
minute. Using your microwave for 100 hours will cost about
$7.
