Friend of the Month Reminder
“Thirty days hath – whoa!” Admin says. “End of the month already.”
“Think hath will make a comeback?” Spence says. “Thee, thou, whither, thither, all that?”
“Nope. We’re going in the other direction. Can’t keep language from changing – it’s crowdsourced like nothing else. Five hundred years from now this right here will seem to readers then like Chaucer does to us.”
“Wow! We’re as good as Chaucer?”
“Let’s get back to the end of the month. That means it’s time for the Friend of the Month reminder. See Riley over there on the right? He’s Chet’s Friend of the Month for April. All his human companion did was send in a photo to the gallery as Billie and Bella did today (see Friends gallery). The random number generator (see below) did the rest, and Riley’s human companion qualified for a signed and paw-printed copy of The Sound and the Furry. This could be you! Just send in a photo.”

Hey! Am I First?
9:18 am on April 30th, 2014
Well, Good MOrning then!
9:23 am on April 30th, 2014
Good morning, everyone! Hey BSD, you are up early! Billie and Bella are beautiful woof, a mouthful! ML, do something, even if it is wrong 🙂 That’s what we do. Glad to hear that Wyatt is in training, mom loves that guy and Clyde and, and, and all the Snowhook dogs.
Groomer showed up here at 8:10 so we are having a wash ‘n dry Wednesday 🙂
9:29 am on April 30th, 2014
An example of Chaucer’s Middle English: “And specially from every shires ende/ Of Engelond to Caunterbury they wende,/ The hooly blissful martir for to seke,/ That hem hath holpen whan that they were seeke” (General Prologue to The Canterbury Tales).
Good morning all.
9:47 am on April 30th, 2014
Good morning, all! It is a very rainy, windy, chilly day here… in every shires ende of Oley. Heh!
9:54 am on April 30th, 2014
Greetings!
Rainy Wednesday here in Croton on Hudson. My hair does not like rain, or heat, or humidity.
Today is head shrinking day. Doesn’t mean my head won’t be flat, just smaller.
Wyatt, Egads! Going to the Outlaw side. I hope this doesn’t mean you will be wearing black , and singing Folsom Prison Blues….
LouLou, I am loving Mr. Carrot. He and I took a very nice afternoon nap yesterday under the Rose quilt that Masquers and Belle Starr tucked me under.
Kool jazz by Masquers and the prof was enjoyed by all.
Good day to all!
9:56 am on April 30th, 2014
Yes, HRH B, mom remembers reading that. She found that instead of angsting over the language, just read what you see out loud and it begins to make sense.
9:57 am on April 30th, 2014
Wose! I am coming with you to the laundromat. I don’t want them shrinking your head too small to fit it on Mr. Carrot!
10:01 am on April 30th, 2014
B: The Canterbury Tales! Someone here hasn’t read that one since her high school daze and not that particular version lol. Perhaps an annotated one?
Darah: You mean you haven’t already had your very own solo bath this am?
A Wash ‘n Dry Wednesday. We like it!
It is going to be hot, Hot, HOT today. Why it could even reach into the 80’s. Heh, heh. (Somehow the O’Howler’s Weather Forecast sounds more apropos for this day’s theme.)
Wose: There is a rumor the Wookiemobile will be parked outside today. Who will be driving we cannot say.
Sending Bear Hugs from the Island.
10:05 am on April 30th, 2014
Gah!
10:05 am on April 30th, 2014
HOH: Yes, unlike Old English, most of Middle English is recognizable by modern readers.
10:06 am on April 30th, 2014
Bear: Perhaps you read a translation–in modern English.
10:14 am on April 30th, 2014
Bear, I will be looking for the Wookiemobile in the parking lot. Hugs back at ‘ya.
Kat, laundry day in this house is tomorrow. My head will be shrunk by my therapist. I get to tell her about all my problems, and she gets to tell me that I am a great person. But You can come and sit in my lap. I could use a friend.
THIEVES! Belle Starr has an outlaw name. Is she packing a six-shooter somewhere?
10:29 am on April 30th, 2014
Its laundry day here too, but in this case it is the carpets that are getting shampooed. They were really dingy and dusty and had more than one or two “accident” spots. Gramp is going to be so pleased when he sees his fresh new rooms. Everything from the curtains to the furniture has been polished, washed, or shined up. Heh heh – that’ll teach him to go away for a couple of weeks and leave Mama unsupervised.
We aren’t even going to mention FOM – we have decided it is a conspiracy against Adorable Royals and Wrotten Kats.
10:36 am on April 30th, 2014
Wose: How about if I tell that lady what a great person you are, and she agrees? Then we all can go out and get some ice cream! I think ice cream solves everything. Oh yes it does.
10:46 am on April 30th, 2014
Tupper&Gilly: Your Time will come…and the Wrotten Kats too.
We cannot wait for Gramp to see his shiny new digs!
The Thieves appear to have his Breakout well in paw and Callie the Canine Reporter is expected to be on the scene with Home-Coming Comments.
Kat: You’ve got that right!
11:02 am on April 30th, 2014
Kat, let’s just go get the ice cream. Ice cream makes everything all better!
11:10 am on April 30th, 2014
I have been tasked with finding someone who will come and haul an antique wardrobe and mantle out of my mother’s storage barn. N…
The phone rang while I was typing the above, and I found a man who is interested in the stuff. Score!!
Biddy has been deposited here, (Holly too) to be taken to the
v e t to get her dewclaw looked at. It is facing the wrong direction, probably as a result of the altercation with the pits. Hey, Mimi doesn’t have anything to do, would love to play dog taxi.
11:25 am on April 30th, 2014
Wow!
Riley’s month is up already? So long, Riley. You are a good dog.
Pick a Plunderer!
Wose: We plunderers all know that you are a truly GREAT person.
I am shrinking vertically but gaining horizontally so I guess I am the same only different.
Today will be cloudy and warm so outside work in the front yard is indicated: pruning rose and lilac bushes, raking lawn and leaves, edging sidewalks. The backyard is still too wet.
11:38 am on April 30th, 2014
Now you’re talking, Wose.
Poor Biddy. That dewclaw must hurt. ouch!
Lucky Dawson. We have had so so so much rain. Our creek looks to be flooded. Yikes! The worst of the rain is supposed to come later today and overnight.
11:39 am on April 30th, 2014
Dawson, our mom is doing the same thing (shrinking and gaining) so you two must be twins! Raining Maine Coon and Poodles here so no yard work on this Wash ‘n Wear Wednesday. I (Lucy) am clean and soft. Pookey is afraid of water so the family will do her another week. Darah Thea is having her first hair cut…fotos will follow but WOW, are her legs l o n g.
11:52 am on April 30th, 2014
The “secretarial spread” has struck me as well.
11:54 am on April 30th, 2014
Macy’s Mom – cool beans on the antique removal – hope you got a pretty penny for the stuff. And we hope the v e t bill is teeney tiny like a Min Pin. Sorry those bully pits caused problems for you.
Can’t wait to see the pics of Darah with her Betty Grable do.
And Mama says we are NOT to discuss the horizontal growth factor. She is looking for a fun house mirror that will say nice things about her. tee hee
11:59 am on April 30th, 2014
A “pick a plunderer” idea sounds good to me. How cool would it be if Sadie won FOM while I am half way around the world. Oops, I just jinxed her chances I am sure.
Diane C asked about meals. Here goes my report (and yes I think I have gained weight even with all the walking)
Food in Turkey
Breakfast: lots of different types of yogurt, lots of different types of olives and cheeses, tomatoes, cucumbers, French bread, honey. This is the traditional breakfast. For tourists they offer cereals and occasionally scrambled eggs and crepes.
Lunch: soup course, appetizers or salad course, meat course and an amazing variety of dessert bites. Main courses have fish and chicken, beef and pork are rare. Also there are usually different eggplant dishes.
Dinner: similar to lunch but more of everything. If meals are a buffet, there will be a buffet for soups/salads/vegetables, a buffet for main courses, and a separate buffet for desserts. Desserts are lots of honey syrup-soaked items and poppyseed cakes and things I don’t recognize but are tasty.
Of course there are Turkish coffees and teas. Their fruits are wonderfully fresh and juicy–but their dried fruits such as figs are great too.
12:37 pm on April 30th, 2014
Hobbit – all we can say is “yum”.
We are so glad you are having such a wonderful trip. Your pictures are beautiful, your descriptions make us want to be there. And your adventurous spirit is marvelous.
1:12 pm on April 30th, 2014
Yummers!
CHobbit: I am going to look for eggplant recipes. The few times I have had eggplant I have loved, loved, loved them but for some reason I never bring them home from the market.
Cheese and olives. Yup. Love ’em! Cucumbers, tomatoes, yogurt, honey soaked desserts and French bread. Delish!
1:21 pm on April 30th, 2014
Dawson, Why don’t you grow some eggplant?
It is a wet cold rainy day here too. I am going out to put up my hummingbird feeders in case a starving cold birdy stops by.
1:25 pm on April 30th, 2014
C. Hobbitt–Thanks for the information–I love the idea of a savory breakfast with tomatoes and cukes (and anything with eggplant is bound to be good).
The Pooh quote was a comfort to me this a.m. as I tried to order transcripts for a new employer (and it’s already starting to seem like it isn’t worth the effort).
Pick a Plunderer indeed! (Or one of my household–currently hiding from some very strong winds outside.)
One of my neighbors lost a 25′ palm tree in the wind–nothing broken, fortunately.
I have to go FAX stuff. Pfaugh!
Everyone have a wonderful day.

Here is an article we think Bee (and others) might enjoy: Why Pennsylvania is the Most Linguistically Rich State in the Country:

I just read the Friend of the Month Reminder at the top. I’d like to see “forsooth” come back into general usage. We had “for sure” as a kind of placeholder/amplifier some years ago, but I don’t think it packs the same punch.

In my neighborhood we still get “Wolcom Yole” sung at the winter holidays, which I think is a nice gesture toward our linguistic past.
Are dogs “dogges” for Chaucer? Does anyone know? (I read in one of my Greek books that ancient Greek literature had dogs saying “bau-au-au” but can’t confirm it.)

Oh drat! I’m so sorry about the multiple dogs–I was thrown off by the “iggles” game. (“Iggles”?)
1:46 pm on April 30th, 2014
Diane, What multiple dogs? There can never be too many dogs, ioo.
2:28 pm on April 30th, 2014
Multiple dogs? Isn’t that the way one expects them? We like doggles!
Dawson, try Baba Ghanouj which is an eggplant dip…yummers!
2:31 pm on April 30th, 2014
Oh, yeah. And if anyone thinks this is cute on a Newf gal, they can kiss my tail !

Must admit it is cooler.
2:34 pm on April 30th, 2014
Aww Darah…you look like a poodle!
snicker!
3:04 pm on April 30th, 2014
(Pookey) Dawson, what does that make Lucy Lou look like?
3:04 pm on April 30th, 2014
For some reason I can’t post a photo right now but we were at the Gallipoli Memorial site today. Very moving. I love the words of a letter the President of Turkey (Ataturk) wrote in 1934 “…you, the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.”
3:28 pm on April 30th, 2014
It’s fun to read all the Plunderer’s excellent comments. Some day I will understand them ! I did finally get FOM! Zoe
3:35 pm on April 30th, 2014
Darah–It’s quite a unique look…almost punk.
Macy’s Mom–any further word on Biddy’s dewclaw?
C. Hobbit–What a strangely universalist memorial for (long) after a war. As you point out–very moving.
3:54 pm on April 30th, 2014
Darah: We know you are miffed, but as the O’Howlers have pointed out…you DO look like a Poodle.
You may prefer DianeC’s description…Punk…lol.
Zoe: The Plunderer Lexicon is always a challenge.
Speaking of FOTM…isn’t it about time one of the River Bears wears the crown?
3:55 pm on April 30th, 2014
Bouffant!…Look! It’s a Newf with a Bouffant hair-do!…heh!heh!snort!cough!
3:57 pm on April 30th, 2014
Zoe!…Its okay. I never know what these guys are talking about either…grunt!
4:03 pm on April 30th, 2014
(quickly posting while Kat & Rose are out getting ice cream and Belle Starr is napping)
CHobbiti: The story of Gallipoli is very moving. Your wonderful adventure is one of a lifetime.
Biddy: Sorry about that altercation with the bullies in the park.
Don’t they have area where small dogs are safe?
4:04 pm on April 30th, 2014
We don’t even know what we’re talking about most of the time. Heh!
4:28 pm on April 30th, 2014
Eh!
HOH: I didn’t say that about Darah! (laughing) I think it was Zeusikov. I think Darah looks fetching in her new haircut.
4:35 pm on April 30th, 2014
Zeus would. not say that about his Darah!
It was us girls!
4:40 pm on April 30th, 2014
Darah – to quote one of our favorite lines from the old “Will and Grace” show – “What’s up with the hair, honey? Looks like you have mousse…..
AND squirrel in there”.
tee hee
Oh, eggplant. We love eggplant. Can’t grow it, but we sure do buy a lot of it.
5:10 pm on April 30th, 2014
(whispering Darah) As long as Zeus won’t say anything about his Darah, it will be OK. Mom told me hair is temporary and will grow but this will be good for swimming. Sammy, don’t you have trouble with the way someone trims your fluffy white ears? You have my sympathy. (Or is it Lou Lou? Hard for me to tell)
5:19 pm on April 30th, 2014
Heh. Mr.Staff grew eggplant one year when I was spending most of the summer in Minneapolis. I came home in September for a visit and we went out to tour the garden. Mr.Staff proudly showed me his eggplant which was over 5 feet tall but didn’t have any tiny eggplants on it darn it all.
I laughed and laughed. Then I burrowed down under the giant weed and we found his eggplant about 14 inches tall. It did have one eggplant on it that was decent sized in spite of spending all summer in the shade of that giant weed. Mr.Staff pulled out the weed and we haven’t thought of it again till now. Snorkle.
I just put up my cousin Mike’s rescue husky ‘Pepper’ for a FOC. Hopefully the recent posting luck will hold and she will be the new FOC.
5:20 pm on April 30th, 2014
Sammy has the ear troubles. Loulou’s Mom, MPM, is very firm about hers, so she doesn’t get “shorn like a sheep”.
5:28 pm on April 30th, 2014
FireSlippers!…snort!heh!snort!…I almost laughed out loud over Mr FireSlippers eggplant story…heh!…He just gets funnier and funnier…chorkel!
5:30 pm on April 30th, 2014
(Lucy Lou) Maybe the new groomer was color blind and couldn’t tell black from black. Maybe mom wasn’t firm enough, Maybe Darah wiggled and the groomer oopsed so just continued. Anywho, next time I’ll grab her pant leg if lil’ sis doesn’t have at least an inch of hair all over her body!
5:47 pm on April 30th, 2014
My VBFF Belle Starr, and my goodest friend, Teddy up top.
Ahhh, Kat and I have returned from our ice cream run. We had samples of every flavor. Belle Starr and I will do some on-line shopping. One can never have enough sparkles. I hear the Prof and Masquers warming up….
5:49 pm on April 30th, 2014
Poor Darah! All of us go through at least one bad haircut in life.
5:51 pm on April 30th, 2014
It’s the Looks on Their Faces so funny.
There’s Darah, the one with the unfortunate cut, looking very upset and Lucy Lou looking up at her thinking dog knows what. Chortle.
5:53 pm on April 30th, 2014
Thank you Howlers. That article is interesting. I’ve never heard of “sbarro slices.”
5:59 pm on April 30th, 2014
I waited all day for an appliance guy to come and fix my dryer. I hate days like that. He’s fixed it–$269 later. Anyway, I’m having a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon to celebrate having a working dryer again.
6:02 pm on April 30th, 2014
Oops!
Does Darah have a bald spot?
Do eggplants grow like zucchini?
The roses are harder to prune than I thought. It will have to be continued tomorrow. The lilacs have not been touched.
6:27 pm on April 30th, 2014
Dawson, Darah has 2 or 3 bald spots 🙁 Eggplant grows more like peppers – bushy, not viney. HRH B You earned that glass of wine…$269? Wow. an expensive vintage!
6:28 pm on April 30th, 2014
We just got our internet back. The power was out for a bit, then when it came back, we couldn’t get to the internet.
Meantime, Mom got wonderfluffed. Darah would have the last laugh.
So eggplants like to hide under weeds, eh? Heh heh heh!
Bee, Sbarro is a particularly blah pizza chain on the turnpike.
6:30 pm on April 30th, 2014
Darah, at least your hair remains the same color. That’s more than this lady can say.
Shhh. Please do NOT tell Meashka that I borrowed her login again.
6:49 pm on April 30th, 2014
3 very tired dogs here from the grooming adventure and a ride in the car for a treat. We are going to read early but perhaps check in a bit later before we turn in.
6:52 pm on April 30th, 2014
HOH: Yes, I think I earned it.
Howlers: Thank you for the info. How can pizza be blah? (That is a real question.)
6:56 pm on April 30th, 2014
Hey – turn on the tv. Brian Williams is about to do a story about how smart dogs are.
No kidding.
7:06 pm on April 30th, 2014
Seriously Bee – you have never had a tasteless pizza?
Well, BW didn’t have too much new to say. Nothing that we didn’t know anyway.
7:12 pm on April 30th, 2014
Bee: cardboard crust, flavorless cheese, watery, spiceless sauce. All nicely kept warm under a heatlamp.
7:19 pm on April 30th, 2014
Blah!
7:34 pm on April 30th, 2014
Definitely blah!
I couldn’t find the Brian Williams program…. CNN right?
8:03 pm on April 30th, 2014
Rio, American Idol is on so pay attention an hour from now so you can be tuned in.
8:06 pm on April 30th, 2014
MollysMaw!…I will be ready, but my friend might be flipping from the game to the idol…sniff!…It is getting down to the wire this week….heh!heh!
8:19 pm on April 30th, 2014
BW is on NBC.
Biddy had her dew claw removed. Dad had asked Belle’s vet how much to have her dc done and was quoted $800. Biddy’s total including 2 scripts was $75. What the hey? When I went to get her she was in an exam room, with the run of the place. Wednesday is surgery day, so all the post op kennels were taken. Miss Thang had a window to the street, so I’m sure she was thrilled.
I am getting my head shrunk tomorrow, so maybe Rose and I will be twins.
8:45 pm on April 30th, 2014
Macy’s Mom, don’t get it shrunk too much or your Kentucky Derby bonnet won’t fit on Saturday!
8:58 pm on April 30th, 2014
Leo, if the rest of the night goes like this first hour, you can keep watching your baseball game.
9:00 pm on April 30th, 2014
Love this voice recognition. Leo. Anyway these songs tonight were picked by viewers and nothing is going that well if you ask me. Lackluster.
9:17 pm on April 30th, 2014
Idol!…Alex just started the show for us way out west…snort!…I thought he was amazing. As always…snorkel!…He will have a huge following after the show…heh!heh!…He has turned into a Kool Kat!…Woooo!
HiJinks!…I see that Harry and the little guy are up to those hijinks again….chorkel!
9:17 pm on April 30th, 2014
Leo!?….Who the heck is Leo?…grunt!
9:32 pm on April 30th, 2014
Rio, sadly it’s bedtime here. I can’t watch this through to the end.
9:34 pm on April 30th, 2014
Let me know what you think and I’ll catch it all tomorrow morning.
9:47 pm on April 30th, 2014
Where are Barb&Magpie?
9:57 pm on April 30th, 2014
Bear, you’re right. B&M have not been posting. Now we are worrit.
10:29 pm on April 30th, 2014
Songs!….Some songs are making and some songs are breaking our 5 remaining artists…snorkel!…I think Alex is killing it. He has risen high in my esteem. Jena is also really amazing. Caleb drew the short straw on his first song – waiting to see if he gets another chance to shine as he is my pick to winnit all…sniff!…I do not want to wuffle and pick someone else, but it could happen…wheeze! …Sam failed tonight in my opinion with his “funky” song…grunt!
10:42 pm on April 30th, 2014
ML, Today was a good head shrinking day….I wasn’t crying when I left the session.
10:52 pm on April 30th, 2014
Rose!…Good days are the Best!….Wooooo!….I think you are getting Confident and Strong Hearted…snort!….I never think of you as Small and Meek and I never will….sniff
10:53 pm on April 30th, 2014
Caleb!…He gets another chance here to prove that he is my pick to winnit all….grunt!…Caleb is unique, he needs to work it right now!….snort!
10:59 pm on April 30th, 2014
KIlT-IT!….Caleb Johnson kill-ed it. HE is STILL MY PICK to winnit all…chuffle!…This is no small thing because this year is out of this world with talent. But I know all of them have ab-fab careers ahead of them no matter what…heh!heh!…I will not lose any sleep over who wins or loses, but Caleb will win…snort!
10:59 pm on April 30th, 2014
Aww, shucks , Rio. I am blushing.
11:01 pm on April 30th, 2014
Do any of youse have a bookstore called “Books a Million” in your area?
11:01 pm on April 30th, 2014
MollysMaw!….I hate to say this, but Sam Woolf might be going home tomorrow night…snuffle!…Just depends on how long the tweeners stay up to vote all night long, I guess….heh!heh!
11:03 pm on April 30th, 2014
Rose!…You are sure up late!…sniff!….Usually you are snoring with all your paws in the air right now….wheeze!…Or is that Grizz?…heh!
11:04 pm on April 30th, 2014
RIO! have you heard from the Pixie? I am worrit.
11:09 pm on April 30th, 2014
RIO! Not only do I sleep with all four paws in the air! I sleep with my mouth open, and dribble all over my pillow. My tummy is upset and I might splort, so I am watching one of my all time favorite shows, “Law and Order.”
11:10 pm on April 30th, 2014
Rose!…I have heard that our Giant has the flu…gah!…And he has a major dentistry appointment tomorrow – ugh!…So Rebecca will be going with him because he might throw-up all over the dentist and the dentist’s assistant and the dentist’s equipment…sniff!…Not to mention major damage to the dentist’s bathroom…guh!gurgle!….But you did not hear this from me. I am nothing if not a confidant….snort! …Please say a prayer for the Giant’s Dentist tonight…wheeze!
11:15 pm on April 30th, 2014
Excitement!…After all the excitement and talent on the American Idol show we are now gearing down to the Rockies baseball game….heh!…Although, the good news is Rocks 4 ta Nuthin’ right now over those sneaky snakes from Arizona…heh!heh!….Right now life is good….snort!
11:21 pm on April 30th, 2014
RIO! That should be quite an appointment! I will be thinking good thoughts for the Giant, and hoping that the dentist, dental assistant, and all the equipment is splort free.
11:29 pm on April 30th, 2014
Rose!…That will take a miracle, bark my words…snort!
11:41 pm on April 30th, 2014
UP!…Thank you Rose for staying up with me tonight…snorkel!…You are a true Pal….slurrrrppp!….heh!..GoodBedBug-Night!…snort!
11:42 pm on April 30th, 2014
RIO! It is nice staying up with you.
11:44 pm on April 30th, 2014
Rose – we have been to Books A Million in the past. We thought they should be called “Books No One Ever Heard If, For Good Reason”.
We are calling it a night here too. Lots to do in the morning before Gramp comes home.
G’night all
11:47 pm on April 30th, 2014
T&G, Snort! Is it that bad? My thinking is that this bookstore used to be Borders.
11:55 pm on April 30th, 2014
Rio you certainly have your paw on the pulse of the blog. I am sorry to hear the giant has the flu. Nasty stuff. Hope he feels better before his dentist appt.
Rose I am glad you had a good day after your head was shrunk. We here at the blog know how wonderful you are. We just have to convince you that you might be short but you are one tough cookie.
Nighty nutters
11:56 pm on April 30th, 2014
Nighty night all!
RIO! I hope you are nice and comfy in your soft bed with all your baseball toys in just the right places.
G’day, Liz.
