Friend of the Month Reminder
“Last day of the month already?” says Spence. “How do you slow this thing down?”
“You’d have to invent the opposite of the Big Bang,” Admin says. “But the point is it’s the last day of eligibility for August’s Friend of the Month.”
“At the right of the screen you’ll see Sassy. Sassy’s Chet’s July Friend of the Month. Sassy’s human companion sent in a photo to the Friends of Chet gallery. The random number generator – “
“East German Army surplus, circa 1956 – “
” – does the rest. Winner stays over there for the month and the winner’s human companion gets a signed and paw-printed – “
“– and a personalized very special hi there from Anthony Weiner.”
” – copy of the latest Chet and Bernie novel, in this case A Fistful of Collars.”
“This could be you! Just send in a photo!”

Gooood morning, everyone! Wow,Wednesday…mmm? End of the month soooon? Maybe the HOH will get lucky this month as we saw our original HOH and our Lucy Lou on the right this month! Not really though. Mom says if it weren’t for bad luck, she wouldn’t have no luck!
Yes,have a “Wow Wednesday”.
8:40 am on July 31st, 2013
Wow Wednesday begins with Zoë going to the dentist. She might be having and OWWW Wednesday. She’s not getting a crown. She says she is not royalty.
Today for me? I am NOT leaving the “Property” (as my guys put it – Let’s walk the property – whenever they are up here).
Watering the gardens, vacuuming the pool, working on a project. Sounds like a Wow Wednesday to me!
BIG BANG – little whimper
8:44 am on July 31st, 2013
What? It can’t be the end of the month already. We haven’t had time to complete our plans to tamper with….ummm, make that “improve” the RNG so that it picks a KAT this time.
8:45 am on July 31st, 2013
HOH, are the Peck of Parrots on FOC? Just think how upset the Herbs would be if a BIRD got picked!
8:56 am on July 31st, 2013
Newf pack, relax. Chet doesn’t like birds, especially after Cap’n Crunch, so the peck is waiting for a time with distractions to enter.
BTW, speaking of distractions, mom has covered our dining room in 40 year old mountaineering and x-c ski gear looking for just the right “fashion statements” for AK in March.
8:59 am on July 31st, 2013
Oh, and our Wow Wednesday also has marketation because it is old fart discount day.
9:00 am on July 31st, 2013
Oh, snap!
You had to put Anthony Weiner in there? Now I don’t even want to win. Oh…that part isn’t true? Okay, I’m in!
There is at least one very colorful parrot in FOC but not HOH’s.
Puss & Boots: There are no mosquitoes in Alaska in the winter.
9:15 am on July 31st, 2013
Admin is in fine form today!
Good morning all.
9:54 am on July 31st, 2013
We were LOL when we read the Weiner part! Too funny.
Kathy Lee Gifford said the other day that she used to date a man with the same name, but he pronounced it “Wine-er”. Maybe this dufus should try that. Oh, too late?
Hard to believe it the end of July already. We want the summer to stay around for a bit longer. Had a Mortgage Lifter tomato yesterday. Delish. Cherokee Purple and Paul Robeson are still our top picks.
10:04 am on July 31st, 2013
His name should be pronounced Wine-er. In German, ie is pronounced long e and ei is pronounced long i. Very simple.
10:10 am on July 31st, 2013
Thank you Sammy. That is what we were trying to say, but you said it much better.
10:20 am on July 31st, 2013
Sometimes I think I make my comments a bit too obscure.
sigh
“Not with bang but with a whimper”?
Oh well . . The dentist people want to cap some of Zoë’s teeth. They will then last for years. She says what’s the point of that? They have already lasted 80 years. She is thinking of having teeth pulled.
10:47 am on July 31st, 2013
Melanie: The HOH always chuffles at your comments, even if they don”t respond.
10:54 am on July 31st, 2013
HOH: I think you two will be voted “best vintage dressed” in Alaska.
I have size 6.5 and 7 warm winter boots if anyone has the need. I have oodles of wool scarves, mittens and gloves, hats, if they are needed. I have several winter coats but they are small or medium sizes.
I’m asking myself, after so many years up North, why I would take a vacation in Alaska when I could be on the Mediterranean instead?
11:01 am on July 31st, 2013
Dawson: YES,

Good Morning Plunderers.
If this was Sunday it would be Time for Brunch.
11:08 am on July 31st, 2013
BearSpiritDog, According to the Pack, there is Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Dunch, Linner, Tea, Dinner and Dessert.
11:10 am on July 31st, 2013
And NOW, please.
11:18 am on July 31st, 2013
Melanie: Lol. Hadn’t heard of Dunch & Linner, but it makes perfect sense. The rest are givens. The Pack and I Agree about the Importance of Chow & Naps. In fact it is Time for one now.
11:18 am on July 31st, 2013
Thank Dog Admin. was just joking about the special “Hi” from Anthony Weiner. I am sure the “Hi” would have included a photo.
Melanie, I always enjoy reading your posts. You are a good storyteller.
Good Morning All
11:28 am on July 31st, 2013
According to the North Dakota lore that I have learned since living here lunch is not at noon. It is at snack time. This is how the day goes. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, lunch, supper, lunch.
I was used to having dinner at 6 pm and lunch at noon. (We never had supper) When someone would say they would visit after dinner I learned to check and make sure what time they meant. It is always afternoon, not evening.
11:35 am on July 31st, 2013
Dawson: The passport is wonderful! Cannot wait to begin using it. In answer to your question, you can send the padfolio after the 6th, as I will be out of town again. This time for a 4 day getaway.
12:09 pm on July 31st, 2013
Staff: When Nana was growing up in the Midwest it was Breakfast, Dinner and Supper…no snacks except for the after-school snack and the late night dish of Ice Cream. These days it is Breakfast or Brunch, then Lunch at noon, followed by Supper or Dinner…Supper being lighter fare than a full course Dinner. Brunch on Saturday or Sunday eaten between 11 & 1 pm.
So dinner at noon is still in vogue in some parts?
12:36 pm on July 31st, 2013
All of youse are forgetting about 2nd Breakfast.
12:45 pm on July 31st, 2013
Hungry group today.
I had great hopes for reliving my youth by having a cream cheese and olive sandwich for lunch or dinner or whatever.
Should have used green olives not black. Wll have to try again after going to the grocery store. Dog knows when I’ll get back down the hills. That sandwich is on hold.
12:49 pm on July 31st, 2013
Dinner at noon is more a country term. When Barb lived out in the country all the folks out there said Breakfast, Dinner and Supper. For farmers, they have a bigger meal at noon when they need the energy, then supper might be leftovers from noon, cold chicken, or soup and sandwiches.
12:54 pm on July 31st, 2013
When Mom was a kid, dinner was at noon. Supper consisted of sandwiches in the evening.
Now she eats whatever meal she wants to name it, all day long. So do we.
She is happy now because she can eat salad again. Sh got her crown, but it turns out it is not the permanent one.
1:14 pm on July 31st, 2013
Dentist! In Someone’s near future.
1:16 pm on July 31st, 2013
Easy way to think about it – dinner is usually the larger meal, supper is lighter fare. We here have Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
1:33 pm on July 31st, 2013
Alright, already with the meal discussion. Ya’ll are making mom and us hungry and if she gains any weight before March, her vintage wardrobe won’t fir!

Herbs, I would never try to keep those Howlers in. They are in here with me more than I prefer as it is.

Herbs: Evil kat? We all know kats aren’t evil…only superior to dawgs.

Toes of you coming to Alaska: no dieting in the new year. Being “fluffy” provides insulation from the cold
Had laser surgery on vein in leg yesterday morning. All the prior verbal and written instructions said I could immediately resume normal activities. However, when I mentioned driving to Anchorage, I guess that is not considered normal. I had to stop every hour and walk 15 minutes and do leg exercises while driving = long trip made much longer.
Vet is trying Sadie on daily anti-depressants for her travel anxiety. So far it is working the same as the other two attempts at sedatives which means not well.
2:35 pm on July 31st, 2013
C.Hobbit: I can relate…nothing ever Calmed me down either, but I did love traveling short distances in the car as it always ended in a long walk.Have you tried the Thunder Jacket?
2:54 pm on July 31st, 2013
HerbKats: That’s all well and good, but have you ever seen a kat read?

3:43 pm on July 31st, 2013
BSD: yes I have tried the thunder shirt and it actually made things worse. I took it off after five hours and Sadie actually laid down for a short time. It was either from exhaustion or relief
3:45 pm on July 31st, 2013
So remember…our motto in the new year while everyone else is dieting is “Fluffy is Good”
3:55 pm on July 31st, 2013
C.Hobbit. Anti-depressants? Why not ask the doc about anti-anxiety med for her? Dogs can take Lorazapan. Many in our family suffer from panic attacks, and this is a big help.
Fluffy is good. Sounds great to me and I’m not going.
4:09 pm on July 31st, 2013
Melanie, This question is directed more towards you. Gus has allergies and has a cronic problem with a scaly, itchy rash on his chest. He goes on meds and it gets better. We have suggested he go on a salmon based feed. He eats a superpremium kibble and a little canned food. Sam’s breeder suggested she get some Dinovite to add to his food. What do you suggest?
C Hobbit, Barb says when she gets to fluffy, she will be happy.
4:14 pm on July 31st, 2013
fluffy is good fluffy is good fluffy is good fluffy is good fluffy is good fluffy is good fluffy is good fluffy is good fluffy is good fluffy is good fluffy is good fluffy is good

I have the passport!
When Dawson asked about my address, I gave her Sam’s, which is where I have had most everything sent since I moved here. I live in a USPS No Mail Delivery Zone. Neither rain, sleet, yadda, yadda, phooey. They did give me a tiny free P.O. box that I don’t use much. When the passport arrived, Sam’s Dad saw it addressed to me so he put with my other mail on a closet shelf. Then my car broke down and was taken away on a flatbed to my car dealer in Amherst.
Soooo, yesterday they called to tell me my car was ready and I asked them to please come pick me up. Bingo – then I was in Amherst along with my car and the passport.
It is a thing of beauty and a joy forever!
4:36 pm on July 31st, 2013
Dawson, Mine did not come. You asked me to let you know if I did not get it today.
4:36 pm on July 31st, 2013
Barb, I have not heard anything about Dinovite. About Gus’s food . . Is he on a grain free kibble? Our dogs’ kibble is completely grain free.
5:00 pm on July 31st, 2013
CHobbit – we won’t sing it to you, but have you tried Rescue Remedy?
5:08 pm on July 31st, 2013
He is not on a grain free kibble. No corn, but I think it contains rice and or barley.
5:28 pm on July 31st, 2013
Herd, peck and sushi all fed and meded for those who need. Cool here toady, 76, so mom is actually cooking in the house! That is unusual for July. The HOH have brown rice in their food.
5:30 pm on July 31st, 2013
Toady??? Today, dammed dyslexic paws.
6:02 pm on July 31st, 2013
Barb, check this out. Also barley isn’t one of the top seven allergins, but it is up there. http://www.bmslab.com/images/up/About%20Food%20Allergy%20Testing(2).pdf
6:54 pm on July 31st, 2013
Hobbit, you do NOT want to get deep vein thrombosis, so listen to the doc. I found out yesterday that DVT is what killed my grandmother after her hysterectomy. Scary stuff.
HOH, sushi, lol, I heard that they are tasty~
Field trip anyone?

6:57 pm on July 31st, 2013
Oh, and when we took our previous dogs to Disney World (yes, really) we gave them Dramamine and they sat in their kennels looking goofy the whole way. We could not stop laughing at them.

Macy’s Mom: Call the finny guys that because Lucy and Darah go bobbing for goldfish. When Lucy catches one, she politely gets up on the couch and…sushi!

Rio? Where’s Rio?
8:18 pm on July 31st, 2013
MollyPop’s Mom! Please check SDD!
Must be a long day’s work for Riö’s friend.
Golinka says she won’t be back today. The Herbs duct taped her to her workroom chair. She tried to walk through the door with a chair taped to her to get The Storyteller to help her. The Royals herded her back and then duct taped her feet to the floor.
All is not lost. She is at least fashionable.
They used her pink leopard striped duct tape.
8:37 pm on July 31st, 2013
Melanie – checked and responded.
8:39 pm on July 31st, 2013
Again.

Enough for YSAS!

Something’s fishy around here.
Barb & Maggie: Message received and rescue remedy is on the way.
I think the only ones (besides B&M) that have not received their passports are the Alaska contingent.
9:12 pm on July 31st, 2013

9:15 pm on July 31st, 2013
Riö! There you are.
9:19 pm on July 31st, 2013
Rio and Masquers, boy is everyone running late. We were worried. Sorry Rio’s Rockies aren’t doing well.
9:21 pm on July 31st, 2013
I haven’t mentioned a word about it today. Otherwise mommy would whisk me off to get WonderFluffed. All for nothing.
9:32 pm on July 31st, 2013
Sammie,Rio,Oh and all: Cross your paws and hope, but we know it will be we, we, we. Time to turn around, lay down and say, nighty night.
9:49 pm on July 31st, 2013
Dawson: I did receive my passport just before I left. I think Rebecca gets home from her travels today and it should be at the post office for her. It is so lovely and precious to me. It made me find my official passport only to discover that it had expired in April. Oops. No stamps in it–something I have to correct in retirement.
Anchorage weather report: the last 14 days have been over 70 degrees which is a record for consecutive days–and it is to be that hot the next couple of days. The previous record of 13 days was hit in 1936, 1953 and 2004. So far this summer there have been 38 days over 70 which is almost a record. To put it in perspective: last summer there were only 4 days.
9:52 pm on July 31st, 2013
Thanks for all the dog anxiety suggestions. I will be trying them. Something has got to work. My car sound system failed last month and is on order so listening to a panting dog for hours is not good for my sanity. I can’t have an iPod for music because of my ears (also I think it is illegal in the state for delivers to wear earbuds
9:58 pm on July 31st, 2013
Ah, the soft pitter-patter of rain…nice!
10:08 pm on July 31st, 2013
CHobbit!…Can you please convince my friend that Beau and I would like to become very fluffy?…heh!heh!…In fact we all are right now, because Beau’s back paw is still sore, and now my friend’s left paw is giving her trouble. So none of us have been walking at all…chuffle!…I’m loving it..snort!
10:10 pm on July 31st, 2013

Mom is keeping us awake again tonight. She has to work tonight, after getting called last night at 2:00 am and working until 4:30 am. She is scheduled to work again tomorrow night. This is all in addition to her regularly-scheduled 8-hour daytime work. Yet, she had to take vacation day for her emergency dental work. Go figure.
3:00 am on August 1st, 2013
Rio: Mission accomplished. And, never to worry. My Lady and I have a way of communicating. She is fairly fluent in dogease and I understand most of what she says if there is a treat involved.
Nighty noodles.
