Friend of the Month Reminder
“Last day of the month,” Admin says. “Time for the June Friend of the Month reminder. Check the right of the screen. See Spencer? He’s Chet’s May Friend of the Month. And just below him, by the way, are two friends who rotate through every time the screen is refreshed. But that’s a side issue.”
“Literally,” says Spence. “The point is Spencer’s human companion sent in a photo to the Friends of Chet gallery. The random number generator – “
“East German Army surplus, circa 1956 – “
” – does the rest. Winner stays over there for the month and the winner’s human companion gets a signed and paw-printed – “
“And hand-written* – “
” – copy of the latest Chet and Bernie novel, in this case A Fistful of Collars.”
“This could be you! Just send in a photo!”
*All 100% true, except for the handwritten part.

This next month it will be me, me, me. If not, then let it be Sammie or Rio. They have been so vocal in their wishes!
Good morning all. Sunny and nice here, but more storms later.
8:45 am on May 31st, 2013
Gooood morning, everyone! Oh boy, another month, another chance (another shot?).
Hey B&M: Funny that our weather here is really similar to ya’lls today, in spite of a 9+ hour driving distance.
Mom wants to hear more about gardens as she is still taking pride in green weeds and doesn’t have the energy to battle them yet.
9:06 am on May 31st, 2013
HOH, Garden is looking great right now. Actually have a tiny tomato already, which is really early for no. Illinois. Might have a ripe tomato before July 1st!
Beans have all sprouted and 2nd batch of beets and spinach have escaped the bunnies so far. Arugula is ready to do a light picking.
9:11 am on May 31st, 2013
I wonder how difficult it would be to read a hand-written copy.
It would be lovely to have Brandy as June’s friend of the month!
I just got in from cleaning the bird bath, putting out sunflower seeds and weeding. It rained most of yesterday and all last night so everything is beautifully green…and wet.
Good morning all.
9:23 am on May 31st, 2013
End of the month already? I’ll miss Spencer’s happy face with his ears close to his head and his pink tongue.
May showers bring June flowers, or so I hope. Another great storm last night and for the second night in a row the neighbor’s dirt has flowed all over the driveway. They are under construction and dirt was applied to the yard in anticipation of planting something, sometime when the construction ends. Since then nothing but rain. Sigh.
My garden? Out of 24 or more sunflowers, 4 are still alive but they are struggling with little sun. The columbines? Not a one aprouted. The Love-lies-Bleeding 10 still living in small pots.
9:42 am on May 31st, 2013
I went to Jacqueline’s yesterday and got all Wonderfluffed and ready for my big day tomorrow.
9:47 am on May 31st, 2013
The Mets beat the Yankees again! Growl.
9:48 am on May 31st, 2013
The bad news . . I am older than the Random Number Generator. (Though I am considering getting a crank to get me started in the mornings.)
The Good News . . I just have a good feeling about who is going to be picked. I think it’s going to be Sam. Though if Riö gets wonderfluffed, all bets are off.
HOH, sit on your Mom if she gets out the gardening gloves.
9:51 am on May 31st, 2013
Whoops, time to head to the vampires. I told Golinka to call me if she needed someone sane to talk to. I figured I could just hand the phone to Mac. THEN I asked her when she had to be at the shew. 7AM. I told her to give me until ten to wake up. BBL
10:02 am on May 31st, 2013
Sammie, I think the Invasion of the Bodysnatchers happened to the Yankees. That is not the real team…sob
10:12 am on May 31st, 2013
Melanie, Barb says she knows how old you are from reading your dad’s book about the puppies. You are 9 years younger than Barb, whatever that means.
Bought some perennials yesterday for the newly cleared out section in front of the house. Flagged down a landscaper on Wed. and bartered with him for the job. Decided that life is too short to wait for Josh to get over here, and Barb wanted it NOW! We have 2 knock-out roses, black-eyed susans, hosta, coral bells, day lillies, and a couple more. Plus white alissium for the border.
10:50 am on May 31st, 2013
Here’s a link to an article that has pictures of some great reading rooms.

I miss Masquers and Bear.
11:02 am on May 31st, 2013
Where are they?
11:18 am on May 31st, 2013
I think they went to Atlanta.
12:22 pm on May 31st, 2013
Good Afternoon, all!
Good luck to everyone! Sending good juju vibes in everyone’s direction.
My garden looks great! I’m concerned; the Lavender hasn’t sprouted yet and it’s been in the dirt for a while. I can’t make Lavender Chocolate Cheesecake without it. Might have to forego the beach trip tomorrow with Finn or push it back a few hours to search the county for Lavender. I might even be able to find Jasmine, which would be a huge bright spot for me.
12:27 pm on May 31st, 2013
Atlanta ? Only 2 hours from here…like many other places.
Golinka & Melanie, good luck with show.
Oh, Melanie, stop giving away the garden glove secrets 🙁 Will attack green weeds another day, decade, ???
12:30 pm on May 31st, 2013
Royal Mum, Please take good care of your flipper and bum knee at the show, and may everything you are displaying be sold!
B, I miss Bear and Masquers too. They are so much fun.
Also missing those at Snowhook.
12:34 pm on May 31st, 2013
Wow!
Hard to pick a favorite reading room out of that bunch.
1:21 pm on May 31st, 2013
Dawson: I think I like the Randolph Hearst (sp?) the best.
1:29 pm on May 31st, 2013
Hearst’s “castle” in San Simeon, CA is quite a sight (site, too). Amazing what money could buy!
1:43 pm on May 31st, 2013
HOT. HOT. HOT. HUMID.
And then a breeze comes through. Ahhhhhhh
Melanie surprised us with a visit. That was lovely. But she may post a link later today, and we want to warn you all NOT to click on it. Terrible things will happen. Your computer will crash. Your marigolds will shovel up. Your tomatoes will fall off their vines. The Marauding Goats will move in next door. So DON’T click on the link. Save yourselves. Beware. Danger, Will Robinson. Run. Run like the wind.
tee hee
1:44 pm on May 31st, 2013
BStover: Years ago I took a tour of the Randolph Heart Castle. Can’t remember if the reading room or library was a part of the tour. Quite the digs.
2:00 pm on May 31st, 2013
Digs!?…snort!…Don’t say that word around SiberH unless you really mean it…heh!
2:04 pm on May 31st, 2013
Howdy! Mom just got done mowing the grass, including one of the pastures where she found Meashka’s missing fence collar. Hurray! She is sending the new $300 replacement back to the dealer.

The weeds in the gardens must wait until tomorrow. It is time to take a shower, sip ice tea, and read. Tonight, a whole lot of people are coming here for a “soiree”, whatever that is. She says it is just a fun and relaxing way to kick off our summer with good friends. It is almost 90 here!
Those reading rooms are o.k., but we like Mom’s room the best.
2:19 pm on May 31st, 2013
You should have seen the other guy!

2:25 pm on May 31st, 2013
We think redheads have all the fun!
2:57 pm on May 31st, 2013
Oh Meashka! The other guy is no longer with us, is he?
Dad is being a real “Eeyore” today. Give me strength.
3:06 pm on May 31st, 2013
Nope, I gave that dude a one-way ticket to h-e-double hockey stix.
3:08 pm on May 31st, 2013
Digs? Come on over because I have digs in my yard.
Hey Hot One! You are still looking lovely but perhaps you should stay away from raccoons.
3:47 pm on May 31st, 2013
Meashka!…She looks mean!…yeeep!
3:50 pm on May 31st, 2013
I’d like to fit all of those reading rooms into the West Wing. I do like our Reading Room on Chet’s Blog, we can make it look anyway we want.
FDM, are you sure that you don’t have something eating the lavender? Like Finn Dog?
Barb, we are all young at heart. I just need a kickstart in the morning.
Dawson, Please take the Strength of the Newf Pack! Please. I’d like them to go to sleep.
Good job Meashka!
From the Bazar I bought a beautiful scarf for the wedding.
Golinka still has a beautiful smile while she has melted into a puddle. snicker.
Now for what she “says” will ruin your computer . . Her part starts ten minutes in!

Heh, heh, heh, guess which NYC couple just scored tickets to the Red Sox and Yankee game tonight!!
4:13 pm on May 31st, 2013
Don’t think the pos melted down. Melanie, thanks for sharing the program. We feel lucky to be have T&G’s mom as a friend.
4:54 pm on May 31st, 2013
Very nice interview with Amalia. I hope it helps her sales at the show. I hope she doesn’t melt too much.

I know it looks like pink snow but it is the crabapple tree petals. Usually the wind blows all the beautiful petals east to Minnesota but this year the wind is blowing from the east and the petals are covering the garden. Very decorative!
4:55 pm on May 31st, 2013
Having forsaken all the warnings, including the threat to my computer, tomatoes and the prospect of the marauding goats invading my neighborhood, I’m really glad to have clicked on that nefarious link that Miss Melanie so graciously provided. Way to go Amalia, we are so very proud of you and all that you do!
Tupper and Gilly, shame, shame on you.
Meashka, just hope it wasn’t Rocky the raccoon.
4:55 pm on May 31st, 2013
Melanie, since I know only one NYC couple it isn’t much of a guess. Are they going to hold up a sign so PA can see them?
5:07 pm on May 31st, 2013
We have a legal question for all you smart people.
When one has been up since 5:30 am, driven to the show, set up and did the show all day in 90+ degree humid heat, then packed the booth for the night and driven home, is it legal to have peppermint ice cream for dinner?
5:10 pm on May 31st, 2013
EEK! Mommy’s computer broke! Tee hee hee! (Just kidding.)
That was a nice interview, and now I see why Kat loves the herbs’ mama so much.
5:20 pm on May 31st, 2013
T&G It would be illegal not to have peppermint ice cream for dinner.
Melanie, Thanks for the video link. We hope Amalia has good sales this weekend and nice customers.
That is so cool. YSAS has tickets to the game. There will be other Boston fans there, I’m sure, I hope.
5:25 pm on May 31st, 2013
T&G: Tell your mom to have 2 servings of peppermint ice cream. That way you can each lick a bowl!
5:28 pm on May 31st, 2013
T&G — Please tell your mom there is very strong Supreme Court precedent for having peppermint ice cream for dinner under the circumstances you described. It’s the legal doctrine known as pepperminto icecreamo dinnero eatum.
5:29 pm on May 31st, 2013
We took a chance too and listened to the interview. Our friend is so well spoken, isn’t she. Exciting to have someone famous on the blog (well besides Chet and Spence).
And we vote yes on the peppermint ice cream.
5:31 pm on May 31st, 2013
Deputy Dawson says Legal! I’m answering because I want to be considered smart.
I haven’t watched the video yet.
I’ve been pink bulldozering the neighbor and his contractor. The contractor is coming over with shovels. Heh, heh. He doesn’t have a bulldozer.
5:32 pm on May 31st, 2013
HOH – we LOVE that idea. Thanks.
The show today was pretty slow, but we know its just the calm before the customer storm. There is a farmers’ market next door tomorrow so the day starts early.
Maybe we should have THREE bowls of ice cream, just to build up our strength.
5:48 pm on May 31st, 2013
Wookie’s Dad, Dawson, and everyone else. Thank you for you legal briefs. We plan to print them out and hang them on the refrigerator.
So there!
5:49 pm on May 31st, 2013
I like Wookie’s Dad’s legal doctrine. And a definite yes to peppermint ice cream.
5:53 pm on May 31st, 2013
I love the legal briefs. Having been there before the heat and humidity were very high, I vote for four dishes of ice cream.
YSAS is hoping no one throws thongs at him. He’s going to wear his Boston cap.
Snigglefritz, now I want ice cream.
5:55 pm on May 31st, 2013
Oh My Dog, laughing my head off here. “Thongs”? Snort! I do NOT think that LLL would approve!
5:59 pm on May 31st, 2013
Melanie, tee hee!
T&G, it is not fair to B&S if you don’t have a bowl for each of them to lick. I want to negotiate for 4 bowls.
6:08 pm on May 31st, 2013
Did you guys notice Golinka’s jewelry? Wow wow wowie!
7:07 pm on May 31st, 2013
Sam, This is why Golinka needs her own website.
7:13 pm on May 31st, 2013
Here is the view from their seats. It looks just like a video game. snicker
7:37 pm on May 31st, 2013
Interview!…On TV!…Wow!…Golinka is good at everything!….Woooooo!
7:38 pm on May 31st, 2013

Some pawsitive thoughts for my friend and her family in OK. Lots of tornados.
8:05 pm on May 31st, 2013
Tornadoes!…yeeeep!…We heard they were in OK-La-Homa again tonight…wheeze!
8:20 pm on May 31st, 2013
Princess Sam – of course the princess was the first to mention the beautiful jewelry – you’re so cute.
As Rio said, Amalia is good at everything. It’s special that she’s our internet reading group friend.
Yes, yes to peppermint ice cream and a good show day tomorrow.
8:24 pm on May 31st, 2013
YEEEEEP!….We just got some toys delivered right to our doorstep…snort!snort!….How cool is that, I ask youse!???….zow!
8:30 pm on May 31st, 2013
Melanie: That looks like my go-to baseball site. I’ll go there now to see who is winning.
Me too!
I want peppermint ice cream and toys delivered to my door.
8:32 pm on May 31st, 2013
Dawson!…It really is the best thing in the world!….Wooooooo!
8:37 pm on May 31st, 2013
I really want peppermint ice cream now. sigh
In OK the storm system hasn’t moved for two hours and probably won’t for another hour. It is spinning off tornados. Great.
Two of the Weather Channel Storm Chaser trucks were hit by different tornados. One truck was thrown 200 yards. No one hurt in either truck.
Why would anyone want to go CHASE TORNADOS?
8:42 pm on May 31st, 2013
Ahhhhhh! My favorite baseball park in the U.S. Yankee Stadium…the House that Ruth built!!!!!
8:45 pm on May 31st, 2013
RIO! Maybe your friend can sneak you in. heh!
8:51 pm on May 31st, 2013
Mom’s still at work and her computer kept freezing up trying to watch the Amalia Show so she will have to wait until she gets home.
Meashka, poor raccoon. Mom puts out cat food for them here. Right now we have some babies.
Mom has a hard time with the “circle of life”. There was a video on the MSN home page the other day about a mother bison protecting its calf from a wolf. Her friend told her not to watch it because the wolf wins. Poor baby buffalo.
8:53 pm on May 31st, 2013
And….how about those Astros!!!
8:54 pm on May 31st, 2013
Rose!…She says this is her mini vacation from us…sniff!…I just can’t bear it…sob!…Luckily the game is in the afternoon so she will be here with us for most of the day….grunt!…Rubbing it in!
8:55 pm on May 31st, 2013
Astros!…grump!…Yes, the Rockies sure gave those Astros a big bump up!…sniff!…Now they will probably go on to win the World Series…heh!…Wouldn’t that be sumthing?…snort!
8:59 pm on May 31st, 2013
RIO! Will your friend leave the tv on for you, so you can watch the game?
9:03 pm on May 31st, 2013
Yankees 3 Red Sox 0 bottom of the 6th
Hoping, hoping.
9:14 pm on May 31st, 2013
Rose!…She isn’t making any promises…grump!…All she can think about are those hot-dawgs and the best French fries in the world and of course all her and my boyz of summer…sniffle!sob!
9:19 pm on May 31st, 2013
Sammie?…sniff! maybe….I bet Clarkson and his gal is not having the time of their lives right now…snort!
9:20 pm on May 31st, 2013
I hope when I wake up tomorrow I find a “W” for the Yankees.
Pleasant dreams to all!
9:24 pm on May 31st, 2013

TTFN
9:49 pm on May 31st, 2013
Excuse me, Melanie, the score is the right way.
9:50 pm on May 31st, 2013
Have been painting all day. I am pretty sure Rebecca is fine, just super busy prior to leaving for Washington DC
Saw this in the news: Police officiers salute K-9 on the way to be put down due to kidney disease. Article also includes them at the pet cemetery:

Traveling!….That is right!…snort!…Rebecca will be meeting and greeting Wookie’s Maw and Paw next week…chuffle!…How fun! How fun!…Wooooo!…I hope those guys keep us posted on what they are doing or will be doing so I can live vicariously through them….heh!heh!
9:58 pm on May 31st, 2013
CHobbit!….How many hours straight can a Hobbit paint?…sniff!…hey, that rhymes…heh!
9:58 pm on May 31st, 2013
So Mama came dragging in from the show carrying a cooler full of ice cream, and a bag of Doritos. She says that TWO bowls of ice cream, a cool shower and an air conditioned bedroom can cure most any ills.
Plus she had a really good sale right before closing time. Kind of made her day a lot brighter.
She was going to post her own comments tonight, but she says she is way too embarrassed by all youse guys’ nice comments about the tv show. She had promised the guy from Cultural Survival that the Storyteller and she would do this a looooong time ago. Obviously Storyteller wasn’t quite up to it yet, so Mama had to fill in. The night before the interview, she sent an email to the CS guy saying “Yeep! This is TV! What was I thinking???”
But she really believes in what Cultural Survival stands for and the work they do all over the world, so she was glad to “help”. She still hasn’t watched it, and says she ain’t gonna. So she is especially happy that you all thought it went well. Thanks.
And now, we are heading for a cool night’s sleep, before another day in “Show Business”.
G’night all.
10:08 pm on May 31st, 2013
C Hobbit, that may be too sad to watch. Same for the mother bison that G & B mentioned. We can not watch those things.
Staff, your garden is beautiful. We see that you put onions all the way around the outside – we did that too. Are those tomatoes in the second bed?
Must say good night now. We are off to beddy.
10:35 pm on May 31st, 2013
Yankees!…Have redeemed themselves…snort!….They beat the Red Sox 4 ta 1 tonight…chuffle!…Rose will be happy tomorrow when she wakes up and reads about it…heh!
10:43 pm on May 31st, 2013
Carpola . . I’m not really awake. Riö’s comment is just a bad dream. When I wake up in the morning, the Red Sox will be the winners . . .
Oh, by the way OTAS wanted YSAS to run out in the field. Yup, it’s been that way since they were little. OTAS would push YSAS into dark rooms, have him pick up the rocks they heated in the microwave, . . It’s a miracle they survived each other.
TTFN, really.
10:54 pm on May 31st, 2013
Barb and Maggie, Thank you for your compliment on the garden. This is the first year I have worked on it since the transplant. They told me not to garden at all the first year. Then they discouraged it the second (and I didn’t have any energy.) During the third year I had all those stomach problems but this year I have been feeling strong and poor Mr.Staff is working hard with all my orders. heh heh heh.
I did put onions on three sides of the first bed and I am hoping for two more tomato plants, Black Krim and Purple Cherokee in the middle of the other one. So far I haven’t found them around here. I still have one place to look though so I still have hope. It hasn’t been very warm here yet so they are sort of not growing so far.
I am already planning two more raised beds, at least, for next year.
10:55 pm on May 31st, 2013
Melanie!…heh!snort!heh!…I have felt like that a lot this season so far…snort!…I hope I wake up the next day and the score has changed so the Rockies winnit!…heh!…Hasn’t really happened so far…grunt!
10:59 pm on May 31st, 2013
Staff!…Me and my friend are so happy about your gardening plans…sniffle!…You’ve had a hard road to tow but you are doing great so far!…chuffle!…We are mighty proud of you sis!…heh!
11:36 pm on May 31st, 2013

Beau!…He is such a weeny, and not a Hebrew national either….grunt!..He is begging to go to bed so badly that we are all giving up on tv and going to listen to the radio for the very final Exciting plays of the game….grump!…Damn him!…growl!
12:07 am on June 1st, 2013
Mr.Staff just looked in to tell me the Rockies tied it up in the bottom of the 9th. Rio, Are you awake yet?
10:08 pm on June 1st, 2013
Day!…What a great day my friend had…grunt!…Without me…sniff!…After we went out!out!out! and then ate and ate and ate, she turned the Stanley Cup Finals game on and there was a big ole hockey fight going on…gasp!…Boston 1 and the other guy – I forget…heh!
Baseball!…The Rockies Won!Won!Won! today!….Woooo!…The game was up and down and down and up…heh!..Tied! And then in extra innings Dexter hit the winning run! All the guys rushed the field. It was soooo exciting!!!…snort!…All the big guns were playing today. She got to see them all do amazing things…wheeze!…What a great day! What a great game!….heh!…snorkel!….The only bad thing was she forgot her camera….grump!
