Friend of the Month Reminder
“Thirty days hath,” Admin says. “Time for the May Friend of the Month reminder. Check the right of the screen. See Muffin and Pepe? They’re Chet’s April Friends of the Month. And just below them, by the way, are two friends who rotate through every time the screen is refreshed. But that’s a side issue.”
“Literally,” says Spence. “The point is Muffin and Pepe’s human companion sent in a photo to the Friends of Chet gallery. The random number generator – “
“East German Army surplus, circa 1956 – “
” – does the rest. Winner stays over there for the month and the winner’s human companion gets a signed – “
“And paw-printed – “
” – copy of the latest Chet and Bernie novel, in this case A Fistful of Collars.”
“This could be you!”
Welcome new friends: GI, grass-loving dude, good companion.

Wonder how much longer the RNG is going to hold up before it blows up. Maybe Rio will finally get it this month.
Morning all. Wonderful day here, warmest of the year. Windy but sunny, in the low 80s by this afternoon.
8:39 am on April 30th, 2013
All we know is that it better pick one if us this time. And NOT one if those Wrotten Kats!
Goodie ing from election central.
8:51 am on April 30th, 2013
Gooood morning everyone! What is this? Last day of April and Spring-like weather for almost everyone? Enjooooy!
8:52 am on April 30th, 2013
Literally a side issue. Love it!
Good morning all.
9:43 am on April 30th, 2013
Snow!..It is supposed to snow a foot here tonight….grump!grump!grump!
9:45 am on April 30th, 2013
Crazy weather Rio! Today we could reach 80, then back in the 50s by weekend.
Off the P.T. then back home to play outside. Onions today, pack of 100.
10:33 am on April 30th, 2013
I expect tomorrow will be my big day when I become the new friend of the month.
11:02 am on April 30th, 2013
Mom thought she had us on FOC but after submit it said “moderating” for about 5 min. ????? Can’t we be FOC?
11:07 am on April 30th, 2013
RNG! High Expectations for Tomorrow on the Blog.
Tupper&Gilly: Did I hear your Mama say the Storyteller will be coming Home this weekend? This is the Best News!
Hounds: Are you preparing to be FOTM?
We are in the “almost everybody” (whether) weather category.
It’s Rainy here and What’s this? Rio expecting Snow?
11:14 am on April 30th, 2013
BSD: We have hopes.
Rio, more snow? Nah, can’t be.
B&M, OH and most every one, happy allergies…er gardening.
11:22 am on April 30th, 2013
B: A clever play-on-words I didn’t notice until you mentioned it.
Sammie: Yes, this could be your month! (to be continued)
B&M: Seesaw temperatures for youse.
Tyb is up top preparing the new May calendar for us.
The Howlers are making plans.
11:24 am on April 30th, 2013
Look what we found!

11:49 am on April 30th, 2013
We like it lots better than that green cover, but how come Chet never has a white ear?
11:50 am on April 30th, 2013
Cover!…Love the cover art!…snort!…The Title – not so much…sniff!…Maybe it will grow on me and maybe it won’t.
11:56 am on April 30th, 2013
Good morning (barely)!
We know we had a better title than that…what was it? Hmmmm. Can’t remember.
It is wonderful to hear that the Storyteller is coming home soon.
11:58 am on April 30th, 2013
Tupper&Gilly: We were wondering the same thing.
And are also thinking Spence will eventually run out of New Cover Colors.
12:06 pm on April 30th, 2013
I always pictured Chet’s white ear being white on the inside not so much on the outside.
12:12 pm on April 30th, 2013
Sam – that’s a good idea. We will picture it that way from now on too.
12:20 pm on April 30th, 2013
Mama is off on her way to see the Storyteller in a bit. She is getting all excited about Friday for some reason. Something about a Big Homecoming or some-such.
Tonight – well, she’s not so excited about that. Seems a neighbor brought Gramp a nice, big, fat trout he caught, and Mama gets to cook it up for him. Mama will NOT eat trout. No way, no how, not with sauce, or with lemon, or with nuthin’. Something about bones – what’s up with that? We would eat anything that had bones. Including “nice chickies”. tee hee
12:29 pm on April 30th, 2013
As Sam said, I’ve always thought of Chet’s white ear as white in front. We always (almost) see Chet from behind so the white part doesn’t show.
I love the cover but won’t say anything (more) about the title.
12:55 pm on April 30th, 2013
Cover!…You can’t judge a book by it’s cover – or title…heh!heh!
1:08 pm on April 30th, 2013
We like the cover and like the title. It is clever.
A high of 86 degrees here today and Rio is getting snow tonight.
I suppose it is a good thing the Rockies are in LaLa Land.
Rio, The Rockies sure did hit the baseball after we went to sleep last night.
Spence’s team, the Boston Red Sox, have more wins this season than any other team in baseball.
1:13 pm on April 30th, 2013
Baseball!….WoOOOooooOOO! HOOOOOooooooOOOOOOO!…chuffle!…Hopefully our team is back on track..grunt!
1:14 pm on April 30th, 2013
Remember the one cover showing Chet’s White Ear? But this version never made it into Circulation. Even Spence found it difficult to explain saying something about the “whims of publicists”.
Strange Visitors yesterday, Rio!
1:29 pm on April 30th, 2013
T & G, tell your mama that trout is delish, and there is a way to remove the meat leaving the whole bone structure intact. You sort of cut into it near the back bone, then gently remove the whole side. Easy peasy, and no bones.
1:56 pm on April 30th, 2013
T&G: our mom’s with you about bones. but she carries it a WHOLE lot further! Nuff said.
2:13 pm on April 30th, 2013
I Love Trout! (all bears do)
2:36 pm on April 30th, 2013
Chet’s right ear is white on cover ot TDWKTM.
2:48 pm on April 30th, 2013
Muffin and Pepe: So long little doggies. I’ve become attached to your sweet faces but the end of the month is here and time for a new FOC.
I’m not a bear but I love trout, especially pan-fried crispy skinned trout. I wait until Staff is gone to cook it though. (Bee: Notice that I added a word to avoid ending the sentence with a preposition?)
My trip to Chicago was over-whelming. So many people were positively influenced in life changing ways by my brother. I was grateful and humbled (and weeping) as person after person stood and shared their stories and remembrances of my dear brother. Wow. The American Indian Center hosted the celebration and there were red, black, rainbow colored, white, old, young, healthy, hurting, poor but rich in spirit people there to speak or lend their support. I wish Mom and Dad could’ve been there (though).
Alice & Abby, Staff & Mr.Staff took off early this morning for home. The house seems empty with only Dad and me here (though).
2:52 pm on April 30th, 2013
Dawson!…If it would make you feel better you could imagine that I am there with you…burp!sneeze!
2:53 pm on April 30th, 2013
Rebecca!…Check your SDD when you have a couple of free hours to spend on it…heh!heh!
2:54 pm on April 30th, 2013
Dawson, the tribute sounds lovely. Reading about it brought tears to our eyes.
None of those words are prepositions.
The dog on the cover of TDWKTM doesn’t look like our version of Chet, but the cover of TFAT shown on this here website has Chet with a white ear, and it is not the inside of the ear.
3:38 pm on April 30th, 2013
Hounds: That is Not Chet!
Dawson: Lovely Tribute for Chris.
The more we hear, the more we realize, yours is an Amazing Family.
3:45 pm on April 30th, 2013
Dawson: With Alice & Abbie gone…if you find yourself missing the demands for meals, shedding fur and cleaning up fur balls…there are a few blogkats willing to keep you company…for a price.
3:47 pm on April 30th, 2013
Hello All, was hoping to write a bunch about every thing you are mentioning, but I’m going under the quilt again.
4:03 pm on April 30th, 2013
Melanie: No Need to Converse. We just want you to Feel Better Soon.
Have you seen Wose today?
4:05 pm on April 30th, 2013
Rio: Quick! Like a little puggy…!
4:20 pm on April 30th, 2013
Masquers: I’m okay so far, but thanks.
I’m going out to rake some leaves off the flower beds before the cold week long rain starts.
4:24 pm on April 30th, 2013
Artistic license. Isn’t that what 2 leggers call it when they are wrong but don’t want to fix it or apologize?
4:24 pm on April 30th, 2013
O’Howlers: Gosh, I am confused, aren’t I?
Rio: Thanks to you also, but, no thanks, heh!
4:27 pm on April 30th, 2013
here’s my entry for friend of the month. our newest co-worker… Ellie

4:45 pm on April 30th, 2013
Nancy, Cute puppy. Did you upload her photo to FOC?
Dawson, Chris was an artist in downtown Chicago, right? Happy to hear that so many turned out for the tribute. It must have be inspiring.
4:55 pm on April 30th, 2013
Barb!….Shhhh! We don’t need any more stinking competition…sniff!
4:57 pm on April 30th, 2013
Nancy, Ellie is a Charmer! But, as Barb&Maggie said, unless you uploaded/downloaded (can never remember which) her Cute Photo to FOC she will not be in the running.
We on the Blog can sit back and admire from afar but have no influence on the RNG. If you doubt us just ask Rio and Princess Sam.
4:59 pm on April 30th, 2013
Nancy!…I’m sure lil’ Ellie will be a sh-o-e in for the contest…snort!snort!
4:59 pm on April 30th, 2013
Bear!…What the hell!?…grunt!
5:10 pm on April 30th, 2013
Ellie is adorable.
5:15 pm on April 30th, 2013
Rio, LOL!
Another good day on the street!
5:44 pm on April 30th, 2013
Correct me if I’m wrong, (I’m not) but did we not say that the title on the new book would be in purple?
Mom and That Guy are still off galavanting around south Texas. I heard that there was to be seafood today. Every day, I see food and I eat it.
5:48 pm on April 30th, 2013
Mom met a girl named Puggy Sue today. She was a CHUNKY monkey! Her tail was so fat it would hardly curl. Just the girl for Someone We Know.
5:59 pm on April 30th, 2013
Barb&Maggie: Chris was an artist (painting and drawing) and an activist. After he was invited to share the space at the American Indian Center he opened the “Uptown Multi-Cultural Art Center”, a nonprofit arts organization, and taught free art and computer classes for anyone who showed an interest. As one of the Native American elders said, “In true European fashion, Chris expanded his territory until he had taken over almost the whole third floor of the building”. He and others would take apart old donated computers and get them working again to teach the classes. He taught silk screen printing to budding and established artists. He did this for free for 25 years, serving the low income Rodgers neighborhood.
6:51 pm on April 30th, 2013
Dawson and Staff – next time Mama and the Storyteller are at a gathering with a drum, they will request and pay for an Honor Song for your brother and your mother. They were honorable people.
6:52 pm on April 30th, 2013
There is still 5 months until the newest Chet and Bernie is available. (sigh) Unless you are lucky enough to get an Advance Reader Copy.
When I got home yesterday, 13 of my sunflower seeds had sprouted. I moved them up to Staff’s room where it is sunny. Raked out the horseradish and fern garden, Mom’s bulb garden and the front walkway garden and added the leaves to the compost pile. Pruned the Russian Sage and the neighbor’s tree branches that overhang our yard (heh, heh) and threaten to poke me in the eye. Swept up the dirt on the driveway and sidewalk. The garden therapy has worked to exhaust me but now my back is sore and I need nap therapy.
I found a copy of Dante’s Divine Comedy. That should work to put me to sleep in short order.
Staff should be home just about now.
7:00 pm on April 30th, 2013
T&G: Oh my, here comes another river from my eyes. They were honorable people and an Honor Song for them would be fitting.
Thank you to your Mama and the Storyteller.
I might join all those under the quilt, just for a short while.
7:07 pm on April 30th, 2013
I liked Brother Chris before. Now, I like him even more. Sleep well, Dawson.
Melanie: Tenzing needs some quilt time, too. He will bring gluten-free snacks.
7:11 pm on April 30th, 2013
Dawson: Which translation do you have of the Divine Comedy?
7:46 pm on April 30th, 2013
BStover: Charles Eliot Norton. Circa 1919. The year my mother was born. I am reading one “Canto”, then re-reading with the copious notes, then reading one more time. I figure one Canto a day is plenty for this brain of mine.
By the way…is there any actual “comedy” involved?
8:33 pm on April 30th, 2013
Dante called the poem “Commedia” (“Divine” was added later in the century) and it didn’t mean what we mean by “comedy.” It has a happy ending and therefore would not have been considered a “tragedy.” He wrote it in Italian rather than in Latin so ordinary people could read it and not just educated readers.
8:42 pm on April 30th, 2013
B.Stover: Is this a decent translation, in your opinion?
8:55 pm on April 30th, 2013
Home!…Someone came home very late and very cranky…sniff!…So after supper, which she had to pick-up on the way home, we went for a walk…grunt!…Turned into the long walk and now her paw is aching again. I don’t want to be the one to say I told you so, but there you have it…wheeze!
8:58 pm on April 30th, 2013
Dawson: I’m not familiar with that translation but Charles Eliot Norton was a professor at Harvard and considered a fine scholar. Dante wrote the poem in “terza rima”–three line stanzas with linking rhymes (aba, bcb, cdc, etc). It’s easier to rhyme words in Italian than it is in English so many of the translations don’t use terza rima. The only one I know of that does is by Dorothy Sayers.
9:04 pm on April 30th, 2013
Night all, we are tuckered out here.
9:11 pm on April 30th, 2013
BStover: Terza rima is not used in this translation.
Staff called on her cell phone and she is home but has no phone service or internet so it may be awhile before she can post.
Time to give Dad his eye drops so I can think about going to bed.
Rio: I hope your friend’s paw gets better soon. Those long walks could be shortened up a little, just saying.
9:18 pm on April 30th, 2013
Mom just got home from her Very Boring Meeting. We are having stromboli, then off to bed. Nighty noodles.
9:18 pm on April 30th, 2013
Dawson!…Don’t I know it!…grunt!
9:28 pm on April 30th, 2013

9:46 pm on April 30th, 2013
Rio, That’s me! That’s the real me. I look good with ears don’t I.
9:52 pm on April 30th, 2013
Yup!….That is the Real Sammie!….snort!…I don’t know who you, The Imposter, is…sniff!
10:47 pm on April 30th, 2013
Mad-Men!…My friend says she remembers the feeling she had as a young kid when she saw the very last scene of The Planet Of The Apes…..One can only wonder what the people in NYC felt when they saw it right after Martin Luther King was shot…wuffle!…Great show, great representation of the times they were a changin’….snuff!
10:48 pm on April 30th, 2013
West-Coast!…Now we are watching our Rockies on the damned West Coast..sniff!…They are behind by one to the Dodgers, but not for long I bet…heh!heh!
11:05 pm on April 30th, 2013
Grunt!…Now they are behind by 3….wiffle!
11:11 pm on April 30th, 2013
Mud! The mud is coming out to play at the kennel. Gah!
11:26 pm on April 30th, 2013
Mud!…Uh-oh, don’t get stuck out there Rebecca…sniff!…Are all the guys covered in it?….gah!
12:37 am on May 1st, 2013
The kennel is still snow covered, but the driveway is approaching bog status. We do our best to bring a little bog into the house everyday.
I know I’m goon to wake up tomorrow to find out the RNG has chosen me, me, me as FOC! I just know it. Nighty noodles.
12:43 am on May 1st, 2013
Met with the realtor today and signed documents. My house will be listed in the M.L.S. system on May 15th (I needed time to clean out my garage and shed). She said that most houses in my price point sell in 60 days. We will see…my house looks quite nice now that so much has been given away or put in storage.
