Friend Of The Month
“It’s smoking,” says Admin.
“The random number generator?” says Spence.
“What else? I think it’s going to explode.”
“Nope. It’s just getting ready to … and here it is, August’s Friend of the Month, actually a double winner. Congratulations to Murphy and McGinnis Greer. If M&M’s human companion will please send spence.quinn@gmail.com a mailing address, a signed copy of To Fetch A Thief, the most recent Chet and Bernie novel, will be en route. And M&M’s picture will soon be in the special box at the right, where July’s winner, BearSpiritDog, is now, for the whole month of August. Thanks to all the Friends of Chet – there are so many beautiful pictures in there!”
Welcome Sadie and Maple, Zella.

Uh oh – The FOM doesn’t look like Rio. Another month of pissing and moaning.
9:01 am on August 1st, 2011
LOL! Smoking is never a good sign. Welcome Murphy and McGinnis!
Hi Mollypop! Good morning all.
9:04 am on August 1st, 2011
I thought little moi was going to be the Friend. I had my acceptance speech and press release all ready. Drat!
9:07 am on August 1st, 2011
Hey there, Mollypop!
More whining, snorting, and farting from Rio. Rio is definitely a sore loser, but you gotta love him!
The FOM’s are great looking dogs!
Greetings All!

Sam: Don’t fret about not being the FOM. I think you’re a shoe-in for the role of Princess.

CRAP!

The winners are gorgeous!

Good morning, y’all! The bad news is that I’m late because Mom and Dad went to buy some groceries. But the good news is that Mom and Dad brought me home some more food! So I guess it’s all good!!!
10:45 am on August 1st, 2011
The facebookie thing on the side says that to be in the ‘contest’ for the FOM, you need to download a picture. Well, that explains why I didn’t win – I uploaded my picture! (Ha ha, this is a little Poodle humor. Mom says “very little.”)
11:15 am on August 1st, 2011
I just looked at the Facebookie thing on the side — Spence says he’s using Kamchatka time! That means his random number generator must be around here somewhere, because Kamchatka is here in town! That’s the name of Mary Chesnut’s house! (If you don’t know who Mary Chesnut is, just watch Ken Burns’ Civil War — she was the daughter of a governor and wife of a senator, and her Civil War diary is quoted extensively during the series.)

Good morning everyone. Kelly is coming out at noon to pick up the kids. I have had fun, but I need to take a major nap after they leave. Boy, Kids are a lot of work. They should just have dogs instead (or even kats)!
Barb says she will post when life returns to normal.

Mollypop: If I understood all that computer stuff, I probably would have laughed!
11:18 am on August 1st, 2011
I think Kamchatka was a time zone in Russia.
11:20 am on August 1st, 2011
Kirby – A download is when you move something from the Internet to your computer. An upload is when something goes to the Internet from your computer.
Mom said that was a stupid joke and I’m a silly Poodlehead.
11:32 am on August 1st, 2011
Mollypop: Oh, now I get it! Ha ha ha!!!
11:36 am on August 1st, 2011
Bee: But it’s the name of Mary Chesnut’s house. Really!!! When they built it, it was so far out of town that they named it after a place in Russia that was really far away from everything. Oh, I get it. I guess the random number generator isn’t here after all. Drat! And I was all set to go looking for smoke at midnight on August 31!
11:37 am on August 1st, 2011
TTFL, y’all! Mom’s off to work so I won’t be back for awhile.
11:40 am on August 1st, 2011
note to self: remember to upload, not download…..
11:45 am on August 1st, 2011
or, should I have downloaded in Kamchatka time…..???
11:51 am on August 1st, 2011
Download…upload….How about send?

Grump!… Today didn’t start off very well at all…sniff!… My friend was tired yesterday after doing some yard work, getting the groceries, gassing up her car, and then trying to find suitable shipping materials for The Fan…sniff!…It was only in the high 90’s yesterday too…grunt!… So she came home, she put away the groceries, hung up laundry, and then after all that we went downstairs to watch the ballgame and play some chess…heh!…Later she made supper for everybody, me included…huffle! …Although, this morning, according to her mother all we did all day yesterday was sit in the basement…snort!… This did not go over very well with my friend, I can tell you that!…gruffle! …She made her lunch for the busy place and then left without saying goodbye to Me!…sneeze!… I bet she feels bad about that now…sniffle!
2:08 pm on August 1st, 2011
Your friend probably feels terrible about not giving you a hug and a kiss goodbye. Maybe she’ll bring you something special when she comes home.
2:25 pm on August 1st, 2011
Good morning.
It’s still morning here. I woke up to no internet. On my day off. Grump.
Finally made a call and the cable company fixed it. Hooray!
Now I’m ready for a nap.
I wonder how Melanie is doing.
I hope for Mollypop’s package tomorrow. Priority Mail indeed!

Kirby T. Penworthy: The Dogonit Beddy Bye Blanket and Book has arrived! Actually it arrived last week just so you know, eh? They have read the book to little Ruby Jo and she exclaimed, “ta”!
Murphy and McGinnis Greer: You are gorgeous dogs! And lucky too. Congratulations.
3:41 pm on August 1st, 2011
The beaded origami ornament arrived today and is even more beautiful in person. Rebecca’s boss made it 🙂
It hangs in a special place near where I sleep in the sun and the sled dog charms will watch over our house. Sweet dreams to me…
Congrats to Murphy and McG. Handsome dudes.

Vacation!….I over-heard this yesterday at some point when we apparently were not in the basement; her mother asked her if she had any vacation time left….snort!… Yes, she does and she has been trying to decide what to do with that time. Maybe take a tour of New England and see the Fall Colors, or a train ride through the mountains and stay a few days in Glenwood Springs where she used to live…sniff!…. Anyway, her mother was saying, “ I sure would like to drive out to Iowa and see your
screwed-upsister and herwacked-outfamily, but I don’t want to drive all that way by myself…..”….snort!….Well, my friend was considering dropping her plans and taking her mother out to Iowa. But after that snide remark this morning along with so many other things, I have a feeling my friend has had it UP TO HERE and will either be riding a train in the mountains, or taking a New England tour this fall….sniff! …Hopefully, if she is smart….wheeze!4:01 pm on August 1st, 2011
Oooooh!
Bluecat: That ornament looked wonderful in the picture so it must be absolutely stunning looked at through cat’s eyes. Enjoy.

Uh-oh. Looks like TMG may be taking over my state of Maryland. This was a Yahoo news clip from earlier today. Never fear though, I will remain vigilant and alert against any surprise attack.
Wookie

Cities and organizations in the US state of Maryland have found an original and ecologically sound method to cut the weeds from their parks and gardens: Bring in the goats.
Brian Knox, owner of Eco-Goats, a business based in Davidsonville, Maryland, said the hungry animals graze on dense vegetation and munch unwanted weeds and invasive plants while also leaving fertilizer behind for the grasses that people want.
“There is poison ivy and all kinds of stuff that you know people don’t want to go in there for, and the goats don’t seem to mind that much,” he said.
Eco-Goats, which has been in business for three years, often brings dozens of goats to the site that a customer hopes to clear, then puts up electric fences and allows the goats to graze for days.
One group of 30 goats can clear 100 square meters of brush per day, according to Eco-Goats. Because the animals are agile and good climbers, they can often get to hard-to-reach vegetation.
When the work is finished, the goats have left behind their droppings which serve as fertilizer, said Eco-Goats, which charges about $5,750 for 2.5 acres.
In Gaithersburg, Maryland, the conservation group Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA), in partnership with the city, called on the goats to remove harmful, invasive species in the parks that it protects.
“It’s such an innovative, sustainable way of removing invasive species, and you get to hang out with some cute goats while you’re doing it,” said Rebecca Wadler, an IWLA Sustainability Education Program Associate.

Mollypop: How is your mom feeling?
7:42 pm on August 1st, 2011
B. – This Primadophilus Intense that Mom wanted to try is making a difference. It’s a small difference right now – she’s had three doses out of ten – but maybe this will do the trick.

Death of a Trophy Wife by Laura Levine is on Kindle for free right now.
8:03 pm on August 1st, 2011
Rocky a traitor? Can it be true that he is behind the Eco-Goats? If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes…..and what’s this about bounced checks?
MollyPop: Paws crossed here that your mom will be back to normal in no time. Dog knows it’s no fun to be feeling bad for so long.
8:09 pm on August 1st, 2011
Mollypop: It sounds like it may work. Good!
8:29 pm on August 1st, 2011
Rockie!… That squirrel made it clear, sort of, that he is not behind the marauding activities those devious Goats get up to…sniff!…The only thing he is behind is their bony butts as he herds them around acres and acres of weeds and making a fortune off their greedy, hungry guts and their poop….grunt! …No, the Goats alone are responsible for stealing important mail and making everyone nervous…grumble!
8:41 pm on August 1st, 2011
Rio. Thanks for clarifying the goat situation here in Maryland. I can return to DEFCON-5. It also does explain why I have been hearing a lot of hillbilly music lately. Wookie
8:57 pm on August 1st, 2011
Hillbillies!… Hmmm. I bet they are in on this Eco-Goat operation along with Rockie…sniff!… I can just imagine them camping over-night in the fields with the goats. …snort!… Sitting around the campfire at night drinking Shine and playing their Hillbilly music to sooth the critters …wuffle!… Rockie probably camps out with them if there are no tall trees around…sniff!
9:14 pm on August 1st, 2011
Commander Rio – Let’s send in Redbone Hound as a secret agent to infiltrate Rockies Hillbilly band.
9:32 pm on August 1st, 2011
Rebone!… I do believe Rebone Hound would fit right in with those Hillbillies….snort!… I imagine he would also send back some interesting and knee slapping reports regarding the goings on in the hillbilly camp…chuckle!…But Redbone has been missing for quite some time now and no one seems to know where he has gone…sniff!…He may be holed up in the back woods somewhere brewing up another batch of his Shine!…wheeze!…One bottle of that hooch and those Hillbillies would tell him everything!…heh!
10:12 pm on August 1st, 2011
Before I go here’s wishing the handsome duo Murphy & McGinnis a good reign in the month of August.
Signing off for the evening – Bear
10:35 pm on August 1st, 2011
Shake!… Grump! Well we went for our walk and got caught in a freaky rainstorm…grunt!…She says I smell like a wet dust mop!…sniff!… Its no secret that I like to snuffle around in the garden and lay in the dirt where its shady…snort!…Cassie the Butt Sniffing Dog used to dig herself a hole in the dirt and lay in it to keep cool…snorkel!…I’ve never dug a hole in my life…grunt!
11:01 pm on August 1st, 2011
Hi all! Congratulations Murphy and McGinnis. Cricket will be very jealous.

And not even one of them dang marauding goats
Guess ole Redbone is outta luck for FOM too. But the real good news-ain’t them patches due out this month??
1:15 am on August 2nd, 2011
Hey, Redbone! Glad you’re back! I think you’re right about those patches.
1:24 am on August 2nd, 2011
Home at last! I counted six trees on my drive home tonight that are starting to go the way of autumn and several other trees that are thinking about making the transition from summer to fall.
Patches! Yes, I think they are due sometime this month. I was mentally making a list of what I will need to sew this season and patches onto parka were at the top of my list!
Please send special thoughts for a solo nation within a nation tonight. As I was driving home I noticed a dog running in the middle of the road up ahead. I pulled over and tried to get it to come to me. I was able to get it just out of arms reach when a truck stopped to ask if I were okay. I tried for about twenty minutes to no avail. I left praying that it will be safe and kept out of harm’s way.
1:27 am on August 2nd, 2011
Hey Kirby. Yup, pretty sure about those patches. And I seem to remember that Miz Macy ordered jest one. As hot as it has been in that little ole gal’s state I’m a’hopin that she will be out by the pool wearin nuthin but that patch.
Woo woo as Rio would say
1:29 am on August 2nd, 2011
Redbone: You hounddog you!!!
1:32 am on August 2nd, 2011
Rebecca: Were there any places around that dog could live? Or was it in the middle of nowhere? I hope it’s OK. Thank you for trying to take care of it.
1:35 am on August 2nd, 2011
Miz Bella, prayers will be said
Kirby, can you blame a dog? She sure is pretty
Off to my bed out on the front porch. Nice night out there listening to the crickets.
Night y’all
1:59 am on August 2nd, 2011
Hey Rebecca, good on you for trying to help. Usually when dogs resist all efforts to be caught i think (and hope) it’s because they know where their home is and are on their way. That’s my only comfort in those situations!
2:10 am on August 2nd, 2011
I think I’m going to join Redbone — well, not literally — and hit the sack.
G’night, y’all!
