Sadie and I returned from a walk and I stepped on Mr. Big in the entryway. I made amends with petting and extra love. Then I went and put treaties in his bowl. Darn if I didn’t turn around and step on his tail! Trust is a tenuous thing with cats (unlike dogs) and Mr. Big has lost whatever little remained after me taking on Denali and then a mom cat with 5 kittens.

Against all odds, Mr. Big appears to have forgiven me. Although it might have been the shredded baked chicken I let him eat while he was relaxing on the dining room table!
One of Buddy’s friends posted ideas local friends could do to help and then she added: “If you’re not local, find out what their favorite local restaurant that delivers is, and pre-pay for a meal or two. Or see if there’s a local to them laundry service that does pick-up and delivery and pre-pay that…Just don’t add to their burden by asking what they need.” Buddy thanked her for the post. As I find other info, I will pass it on for consideration.

We haven’t gone to page two in many moons.
Work!
I’m living in a construction zone again. Grump! I’ve been working today trying to stay one step ahead of the paid workers who are installing new windows, and then vacuuming up after them. My bed is piled high with stuff taken from other rooms so the windows could be reached. Now they are gone, I can put all the stuff back. Groan!
I haven’t had a chance to read the blog today. Maybe later. Zzzzzzz.

So far, I’m really not impressed with Visiting Nurse Assoc. Hospice. From start to finish, Melanie’s infusion was handled badly. Unbeknownst to me, it started yesterday, not today.
Yesterday, our favorite nurse called the hospital social worker about Melanie’s case, as we were all set to have her come to do what will likely be Melanie’s final enzyme replacement therapy treatment. She was told, “Your services are no longer required; hospice will take care of melanie’s final treatment.” Now why either hospice or the hospital, I’m still not clear on which, would decide that having Melanie working with someone that she didn’t know, wasn’t familiar with, and who also wasn’t familiar with her, over someone who Melanie already knew and trusted, I don’t know. So much for making the dying process comfortable. I didn’t find out about this until this morning.
At about 10:30, the hospice agency, Bonnie specifically, called to ask if Melanie still wanted hospice services. I assured she did. When is a good time to come? We aren’t going anywhere, come whenever. OK, how about 11? That’s fine, just understand that her nurse will be here to do her infusion, and that takes a little while to set up. Don’t worry, we’ve done this before, that there are two agencies involved isn’t relevant, we’ve gotten this worked out already. See you then. When 11 came and went and no sign of our favorite nurse, I called to ask where she was. She was at another patient’s house. I asked if she wasn’t supposed to be handling Melanie’s infusion today? That’s when she told me that hospice said they’d be handling it. I about hit the roof. That’s when Bonnie, along with Sam the social worker, came in. I handed Bonnie the phone and asked that they straighten this out. Well, they did, and hospice claimed they’d take care of the infusion. So apparently Bonnie is a nurse, but so is Cindy, who came in shortly. They all did paperwork.
I fell asleep in my recliner, having gotten none the night before. I woke up around 3:30 to see Alena going off with her aid on their outing. I woke up again completely at about 4 PM and found the house to be unnaturally quiet. So I went into the room where Melanie is, knocked over the IV pole, picked up the IV pole, and wandered into the kitchen, where I found no visiting nurse. Just to be sure, I calledAlena’s aid and asked if there was anyone else in the house when they left. There was not.
I called the hospice agency and got transferred to Bonnie. I said that no one was here. I also explained that this drug can’t be just left like that, a nurse had to be on hand to monitor it. Vitals were taken every 15 minutes for the first hour, then once an hour thereafter until the treatment is concluded. And there was nobody here. Why not? Bonnie asked, “They have to be there for the whole four hours?” Yes, of course they do. “Well,” she said in a very nonchalant fashion, “someone will be there to disconnect her.” So I asked, how will they know that it’s time to disconnect? (It’s on a timer.) OK, so what if something happens before it finishes? “Then,” she said, “I’d hope you’d call us when it started beeping, and we’d come right over.” Which would take time, time where something could have happened. I was incoherent by this point. If rage hadn’t started yet, it started then.
Do you want me to come and check on this? She asks. I said I did. I wondered what I could believe though. She said she was on her way. She must have taken the scenic route, because I didn’t see her (with supplies in tow) for two more hours.
A few minutes after I hung up with Bonnie, Alyssa called. Alyssa is the one bright spot in this, and we wish we’d gotten her to start the IV if our favorite nurse was definitely going to be pushed aside (for reasons I still don’t understand, especially if hospice is supposed to make the patient more comfortable on their journey). I laid out exactly why I was angry, explained the conversationI had with Bonnie, everything. and Alyssa agreed that this was absolutely unacceptable and would have the director call me. (She’s calling tomorrow, I understand, but the hospital was supposed to call me about something else in 45 minutes…about 8 hours ago.) Alyssa came in about 15-20 minutes, longer than the 10 she estimated, but I won’t hold that against her. She was competent, knew what she was doing, and got Melanie disconnected and her line flushed. Later, Bonnie came with supplies, including disposable bed pans. Is there not something in hospice about dying with dignity? I’m not sure how that principle meshes with the discussion we had, while looking for the newly acquired bed pan,, about how it’s really all right if Melanie just goes in the bed, the pads are disposable and we can just throw it out without any problem. You tell me how that’s dgnified.
So really, all in all, I’m absolutely not impressed. Somebody better be playing some pretty damned serious makeup.

Buddy and Everybody Else: Aw Crap! I sure hope those health care workers get their act together and pronto.
BearSpiritDog: My back is back to normal but the congestion has taken up residence in my chest for the long haul which seems to be my usual M.O. when I get sick which thankfully is not very often.

Buddy: We made notes of which pant legs to grab and in what order. We have plenty of teeth so we can serve up seconds if needed.
More to Buddy: We are sorry to hear of these woes. Our prayer is that this journey would be smooth, that you could focus on savoring your time with your Melanie. In all this, know that you are loved. Never forget it.

Thieves : Amen to your words of conern and threats of pant grabbing. I myself was thinking pant legs needed to be grabbed.
