For Wookie

“This one’s for Wookie,” says Spence.

“He means a lot to this blog,” says Admin.

“Let’s have a thought for Wookie,” says Spence.

We’re all quiet for a moment. I’m quiet anyway, on account of I’m pretty much napping at the moment. Still a bit sleepy from our adventures up in the high country. And all that lovely fresh water! It’s all in The Dog Who Knew Too Much, except for the forgotten parts.

“That hidden joke in Quacky Baseball?” Spence says. “It may have been oversold a bit.”

“You’re welcome to your opinion,” says Admin.

Uh-oh.

Welcome to the drummer, Tatto the Wonder Dog, chauffeur and rider. And ocean lover!

“Oversold” meaning what? Your exception makes me laugh Chet. And I’m glad this is for Wookie. Now I need a hankie.

Hey Gus and BooBear – keep your wishing for colder air to yourselves! WE want it to start warming up with grass visible so we can start trying to do our Houdini act again – its not even worth trying to escape into snowbanks!

And Agent Wookie – we would be willing to send you one of our very, very bestest catnip mousies if it will make you feel better. Just don’t tell Rio, or he’ll want one too!

We’re 18 here, but the sun is shining and there’s no wind so it feels warmer.

News on Dan. He went to another doctor yesterday and she looked at his file. He was supposed to have 30 minutes, but she got up and told the nurse it would take an hour. More than an hour later, after consulting his file, the computer and asking Dan and ZoĂ« questions, it turns out that he had TWO infections in his lungs and elsewhere. This wasn’t picked up at first because that one hospital had lost everything. And then didn’t treat him for anything.

He was treated for one of the infections by the next hospital, but there was this other bacteria, which comes from staying in hospitals, that never got treated. This could be the reason he is not bouncing back.

Today I drove down to the other side of the hills and got the meds to treat that. I was very tempted to go into to B & N to just look at OFA’s book, but refrained. It is arriving tomorrow.

I had Patsy and Mac riding with me. Tried to take photos with the phone, but can tell that, yes, I’m a photographer, but I need a lot of work on the phone camera. I was going to upload my terrible pics, but ZoĂ« was the next to leave for Yoga and took the phone.

I love the picture of the Golden R. driving. And that Tatoo dog has really long legs.

Wöökie, don’t forget your acupuncture; it’s kept me alive and moving!

While I have been known from time to time to try to get in touch with my feline side, I’ve never developed a taste for catnip, so no need to deprive you of your special treats. And definitely don’t go changing on account of me (ooh — do I feel a Billy Joel song coming on?).

Hi everyone – we got a chance at the computer cuz Basil and Sage are all tied up right now. Or should we say they are “stuck” in the moment. They were trying to pack up some duct tape and glittery star stickers for some reason, and Basil got confused about the sticky side and when Sage tried to help him…well you can imagine the mess.
Personally, we think this has been one of the funniest things that have ever happened here and we can’t stop laughing.

Mama wants us to say thank you (modest blush) for asking about her clay stuff. She uses symbols from the pictographical rocks of the southwest, along with pottery and rug designs. And some she just makes up. Then after she fires the clay, she adds dichroic glass pieces and gold leaf and other colors.

And Barb and Maggie – Mama’s Crazy Lady owns a gym for women. Mama says her CL could never be a Realtor, because the word “real” just ain’t a part of her vocabulary.

We haven’t read the excerpt. We will not read the excerpt. And you can’t make us!
Excerpts make us CRAZY! If we can’t bury ourselves in the whole book, we don’t want to read little bits of it. Besides, if we read excerpts now, then read the book later, we go thru this whole deja vu thingie.
Anticipation is part of the joy. We will wait to be joyful in total…ummm…unless we just can’t stand it….

Only heard wild turkeys at night once – a sound we (especially Wookie) will never forget. The resulting howling and attempts to pull Dad up the ill into the woods in order to catch one was astounding.

I got no luck from the Facebook link either, and I’m not on FB, so I’ll have to be with the corgis and wait. Grump, as Rio would say.

Good morning everyone! I got such a fright when the blog was dedicated to Wookie and then all those sympathetic comments… It was a relief to see his post lower down. Now i just need to go back and see what happened to him. Best wishes Wook!

Melanie: Those are great pictures of the rafter of turkeys. I’ve only seen a single wild turkey. I have printed off the excerpt and will read it shortly. For some reason, despite my techno-illiteracy I had no problem finding it with your link.

T & G: Tell your mom I think her clay sculpture is way cool.

Debbie LM: Wookie’s reaction to hearing the wild turkeys warble made me laugh.

Thanks, they were a surprise. Last year we had a rafter of 6. They’ve multiplied. 🙂
Being me, I wanted to know WHY they called them a rafter . . .

Lots of sites said “because that’s what they call them”. Then I tried looking up the word “rafter” in on line dictionaries. Took a while, but I found this definition.

a large and of ten motley collection of people and things Have to say that fits.

But the site was just a listing of facts, not much help. So tomorrow when I can get to the BIG REAL IN YOUR HAND dictionaries, I’m going to see what they say.

    Background, people, give me background!

Supper!… Here is what she is making tonight, a spinach pasta w/bit of cheese casserole…. gah! …She let me smell the dish before she put it in the oven and I took one whiff, turned my head and backed slowly away from it….ugh!… This I gotta see. There is no way she is going to eat that crap. It’s baking away right now and smelling up the joint…cough!

News!….Good news tonight even though that casserole is in existence, her Potash is Normal thanks to all the damned bananas, fruit juice, vegetable juice and what not she has been consuming….grunt!….Still, her legs are killing her tonight. But she did confess to having 2 slices of cheese pizza at work for lunch. They brought it in and she could not resist the temptation…snort!…She says from now on she will be able to resist the temptation…sob!

  52. Barb & Maggie
    8:18 pm on February 23rd, 2011

Rafter is a strang name for a bunch of turkeys. Some of those names were goofey, if you ask me. We looked up chickens, and everyone calls a bunch of chickens a flock of chickens, even the poultry magazines. One website called them a clutch. I have heard a nest of eggs called a clutch, and a bunch of baby chicks called a brood (as in a hen being broody), but none of the sites we looked at called them a flock of chickens. BTW, Rio, March 19th is National Poultry Day!

OK, here are a few more interesting groups:

    A COLONY OF BEAVER
    A MURDER OF CROWS
    A CONGRESS OF RAVENS
    A PARLIAMENT OF OWLS
    A KINDLE OF KITTENS
    A ROOKERY OF PENGUINS
    A DRAY OF SQUIRRELS
    A SHREWDNESS OF APES

Who comes up with this stuff?

  55. Riö - The Evil Pug
    8:37 pm on February 23rd, 2011

Chickens!… I think a bunch of chickens young or old should be called a Cluck…snort!…A group of eggs should be called Scramblers. Chickens don’t really flock around together, do they? They sort of meander here and there if left free like my friends chickens did when she was growing up and thinking of ways to trap them!…heh!

  58. B.Stover

According to the OED “rafter-birds” are called that because of the nesting place which is in rafters. I don’t think that can refer to wild turkeys however.

  59. B.Stover

Books!…We received ONE whole book today, not the ONE we were hoping for at all…grump!…What’s up with these spilt orders? You think they would wait to ship until they had all the books in the order ready to go before shipping…wheeze!

Gah!….She is trying to gag down some of that casserole, but quite frankly folks, it is not going well at all…heh!… First, she used way too much frozen spinach which had been in the freezer for gawd knows how long…yuck!…Then she didn’t use any salt….sob!… “This casserole tastes like crap!” she said. Now what? There is nothing to eat in this house besides salty dry chicken and noodle soup mix….grunt!…I see her over there cleaning off the little bit of cottage cheese that is left. Not much at all though….snort!…Okay, now she is reaching for a banana. It has become a very low food-wise around here tonight….wheeze!

Rio, Wild turkeys do fly, but domestic ones are too front-heavy to fly. They soar sort of like phesasnts. The wild ones are smart (as opposed to domestic) and they will even roost in a different treee each night so predators can’t find them as easily. They are also quite strong and can do a lot of damage to human by using their feet, so trying to grab them out of a tree would be difficult.

And chickens do sort of flock together. Hens will hang out with a certain rooster, like his little harem. We have 5 hens that Barb hatched out here from our chicken eggs. Those hens always stick together and run in a little pack, or gang or rafter.

MagPie!….Interesting! I didn’t think about the poor turkey guys who are breed (spelling??) to increase their white meat size… snort!…I am so happy I am not a turkey. …wheeze!…Sounds like those little hens have been duped by the Rooster. He is the Cult Master, isn’t he?….grump!…Poor little hens…sniff!

Wha?…Spencer’s remark about the Quacky Baseball inside joke is snort of niggling on my brain now….grump!…Oversold? What does that mean? He must know we hang on every word they (Chet, Admin & Spence) say in the daily posts. Could he really have lead us astray with the inside joke remark?…grump!… I don’t think so! I think it is there and Admin is just having pre-release nerves!…heh! …That’s kind of funny to think about really…snicker!…Can’t wait to see the Inside Joke….gruff!choke!….Although, if we keep receiving one book at a time, it could take awhile, if you know what I mean…grump!

Turkeys!… I’ve been looking at Melanie’s photos of the wild rafter of turkeys…sniff!… I get the feeling they are a group of refugees looking for a place to find shelter, warmth, water and good food…sniff!… All the snow out there is making it hard for those guys and they are on the move because they are hungry and trying to stay alive. Maybe they are on their way to a Motel 6…snort!…I hope they are going in the right direction….sniffle!…Now my friend wants to put food out for them….geeze! …I’m sure they do not like spinach and pasta combinations….grunt!

You guys are going to get the book before us, so it will be interesting to see how obvious – or not- the inside joke is.

Rio, The roosters are quite crafty and Barb really gets a kick out of watching them. The rooster will pick up some sort of tasty morsel, then drop it and start clucking and making all kinds of racket. He will keep picking it up and dropping it till the hens come running over to see what he has found. Soon as they get there, wham, bam, thank you, mam, if you get our drift. Those guys really know how to wine and dine their women!

Poultry Day – POO! That’s for the birds.
Do you suppose that day Rio will cackle instead of snorkle?
Do you think that day, instead of posting,we will have to tweet?
Will we have to take things with a wing and a prayer?
Will Magpie be Queen for the Day?

Oh, the horrors of it all!

Turkeys? I thought that turkey came in Jenny-O tubes that mom buys at the market? We get that for breakfast. I much rather have one I can chase euh, ahem, I mean play with. If I can’t have kats, possums, or skunks, how about turkeys? TURKEYS! Yeah! Turkeys!
