Focused Like A Laser (Whatever That Might Be)

“Son?” said Bernie. “I thought you had twin daughters.”

“I do,” said Colonel Bob. We were in the bar at the Dry Gulch Saloon and Steak House, the patio part, one of my favorite places. We’re partners in the Little Detective Agency, me and Bernie, maybe something I should mention from time to time, and this is a time, so how about now? Colonel Bob is an old pal of Bernie’s from the war, but I only got to know him later – that’s all in Thereby Hangs A Tail. Before Thereby Hangs A Tail was Dog On It. After Thereby Hangs A Tail comes To Fetch A Thief. There’s also the other guy. Some talk went on that he started a new book yesterday, a new kids series. About what? Not sure. I just know the first sentence, because Spence and Admin were batting it around yesterday. Not really batting like baseball, although there is a bat in To Fetch A Thief. Bernie’s hoping to get it after the trials because it’s a Willie McCovey model. Not sure who Willie McCovey is. A perp? Possibly. There’s Willie Mungrew, for example, now at Northern State Correctional, but also Willie McTell, who we listen to sometimes in the Porsche. Have I mentioned the Porsche recently? Maybe tomorrow.

Jeez, had this great post and the internet quit. Hope it works this time.

Chet, I'm proud of the way you can slip us new information past the Admin. It's that great stream of consciousness you have going. A linear thinking like the Admin just can't pull out the good stuff.

Keep it up! After a Nap of course.

Mom just read The Tutor and Nerve Damage and now is ordering Oblivion, all by that other guy. I think she liked Tutor better just because of subject matter, what ever that is. No Spoiler Alerts from me, Rio.

About the Porsche Chet-I think there are times that you and Bernie need a four-wheel drive vehicle with a high clearance. You guys drive a lot of back roads in the desert. I love it when you guys do that in your books, great descriptions and feelings for the desert, by the way, but I worry about you going down those roads in the Porsche.

If Ms. Madak is still around from yesterday–No way are those Iditarod dogs running at top speed. Go watch some of the Iditarod videos They are everywhere on the internet. Lance Mackey said "I let my dogs run at their own speed"

Thanks for backing me up yesterday, Rio

S.Husky and Chet. Having had driven through mountainous desert near Tucson, in a Ford Escort (got lost, long story) I agree that if the money is still there from THAT, and he hasn't lost it again in T-FAT, maybe Bernie should get something with a bit more clearance. ONLY, it they also keep the Porsche!

Working dogs WANT to work. Anyone who has a a working dog breed knows this. If you don't let them work, they get bored and depressed. An Aussie will herd even if it's only people. IT IS IN THEIR BLOOD.

Think how Chet would be if he couldn't help Bernie out.

a little clarification: dog mushers use the term "run" when what they really mean is a trot. Sometimes they call it the Iditarod shuffle

Gosh it is exciting up here in the Northland. The sand baggers are way more organized than last year. Last year the flood was later and more of a surprise. This year the long range forecasters were ready in case of a fast melt, and boy did we get a fast melt this year. There is hardly any snow left in Fargo. The problem this year is the snow out in the country is still melting and trying to get into the streams that flow into the Red. Many of those streams are still frozen and so the water is traveling overland. You look at a farm field and see a lake.

That water can be really sneaky and come in from "the backside" instead of coming through the river like it is supposed to. Then you have to sandbag on the side away from the River too.

But the organization is superb. People are meeting at one central place and we have buses trucking them to where they are needed. They meet the sandbags there and BOOM! You are diked! Sometimes in as little time as 2 hours.

I love it when a plan comes together!

I have to thank the great team of B Stover and Mollypop. They are working the comm. units like old pro's.

We are sure glad we are having nice weather for it this year. Last year we had to do it in a Blizzard!

Sorry about the photos but the camera woman forgot the camera yesterday. Excuses are not acceptable. Success is the only option!

OOO that Chet is such a tease!!!!

Hey Guys – I just saw on the news about the flooding in Fargo. What a lot of water! They showed people packing sandbags – I did not see any Kats.

Siberian Husky: Those cats do give a good concise report, don't they?

I appreciate your comments yesterday about the Iditarod. When I read some of the biographies of the mushers, any doubts were dispelled as it is evident they love their dogs. Several of the teams had 'rescued' dogs on their teams. The mushers think of the dogs needs first, then their own. These dogs are born to run. I imagine it's like when Chet is tracking a perp, nose down to the ground, going at a good trot, he can get in the zone and just go for hours. Only now it's a race on ice and snow. Much faster. Yippee!

Alice: get pictures! Is Abigail still lounging around on the third floor, not wanting to get her toes wet?

SiberH – I see the sled dogs at the ski slopes. They come in a truck where each dog has his own window. They are so happy and just want to get out and pull a sled!

Sebastian Schnuelle came in 7th with a dog he rescued from the pound as his lead dog. That guy has been known to sleep with his whole team in the house when they are at home.

Good idea-pictures, please cats. I would call mom to the computer to see the pictures, but I wouldn't look at them. Too much water!!!

    Goodnight everyone

You can report in tomorrow and let us know how much snow you are getting. All we will probably get is lots of cold wind from that storm. I like it, mom doesn't.

    Hello everyone,

THis is Abbie the Kitty. I really had to fight Alice away from the computer. She has gone off muttering about a communications breakdown, but I heard on the radio that they are not worried any more until Sunday and I won't take that long!

I understand some of you are conderned about me.

Now you know I can take care of myself, dont' you? I have been busy on a contract for quilt testing here. Staff just recieved a quilt back from Faye's Henhouse (really it is a quilt shop) and she had been putting binding on it and I had to test, test, test. It took me all afternoon because she kept trying to bind it while I was testing. At one time I was inside and couldn't get out, but she rescued me and all is OK.

It is a really good quilt. Once I started testing I just didn't want to leave. Alice even did some testing too, in between ordering people about. (She loves to do that!)

Something happened to the cable that makes the pictures go into the computer. I think Alice got sand in it. Anyway although there are pictures they are still in the camera.

Staff says she is doing the best she can but Alice was not happy with her. hmmmmm Maybe I will get the extra treats tonight!

    Sincerely

    AbbietheKitty

Ms Madak? OK, I'm a retired teacher.

More importantly Mr Siberian Husky, alas, I see that I'm memorable. 😉

So the dogs don't want to run that fast, huh? That makes me worry about the leaders.

I've asked Chet if he's interested in a girlfriend but no response as yet. Of course, I'm a lotta girl to handle.

    All right, Adieu Boys,

Goodness, where do all of y'all live? It is spring in southeast Texas….grass is growing, trees are getting leaves, everybody is sprucing up their yards. We actually had a snow day this past winter because the snow stuck to the ground for a couple of hours! We are envious of you Yanks for having a real winter! Mom is trying to get Dad to have an "adventure" for a couple of years and move up north so see what it's like to have all 4 seasons. Usually, in Texas we have 2 seasons….summer and Christmas! This year we are having a beautiful spring.

But, anyway, thanks Chet for the teaser on Colonel Bob. Can't wait to hear more of the story!
