Flu Shots
“Should dogs get flu shots?” says Spence.
“No idea,” Admin says.
“Maybe we should find out if there are any cases in our area. H3N8 is the name of the virus. Very contagious, and it can really spread in daycare or kennels.”
“Is it fatal?”
“Not usually,” Spence says. “The symptoms are what people often call kennel cough – cough, fever, runny nose. The severe form has high fever and maybe pneumonia. The vaccine is about fifty bucks a shot and two are required.”
I open my eyes. Nice nap. Hey! Everyone’s looking at me. I look at them right back.

We’ll be with you this evening. I think it’s 9 PM eastern, but I’ll check to be sure.
Dawson,
There are some comments and signatures in the book, and I shall leave mine. Thank you for sharing.
As for the flu shots. I read recently that there is one group of vets that discourage most shots. Rabies is required by law, but the optionals should be considered relative to where you are and what’s going on. Before I have a shot, we check for titers. This
group of Drs. think that too many chemicals from shots and dog food are what’s causing so much cancer in dogs. I wonder whether they might have a valid point. Too many of the dogs that I hear have died or been euthanized have had cancer of one form or another. I got a dog when I was four. He had the required rabies shot but little else. (We had to travel too far to a vet and I think money was an issue then.) He lived on table scraps and raw food (I’m not sure there was dog food in those days.) He died 18 years later when I was in college. That makes me wonder about what we’re doing to our animals today.

Greetings All!
I just heard a piece on the news yesterday, where there seems to be an outbreak of flu in dogs in the New York area.
Hoping that any of youse guys in the path of that tornado in the SE have not been affected, and are safe.
Macy: Prayers for you and your pack.

And here’s the post:
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/veterinarians-recommend-flu-shots-dogs/story?id=14958498
Chet, don’t let Spence and Admin single you out…If Bernie decides you need a flu shot, I’m thinkin Audrey and Pearl will need one too….I already got mine (for humand, of course!)

Barb has always followed TYB’s theory about chemicals in the body. Now as she becomes a senior the medical people say “Wow, you only take one pill? That’s unusual.” She doesn’t want to put unnecessary chemicals into her body. That’s why she tries to eat organically when possible.
I have to have bordetella to be boarded, and the rabies shot, but that is all I get. For Barb she says no to the flu shot and the new one they are pushing – a pneumonia shot.
9:39 am on November 17th, 2011
Chet, if you have to have a flu shot make sure that Admin and Spence get there’s too!
I give the shots around here. (not Rabies, that must be done by a vet)
We have a monthly heart worm shot. Very important up here.
Once a year I give a shot so they don’t get Lyme and a Fort Dodge Puppy Shot.
I used to do the Kennel Cough vaccine shot, but our dogs don’t do the show circuit anymore, nor do they do daycare, so that was stopped.
I still think it’s funny that they line up for the shots and their treats.
Good morning all! For Friday’s Circle of Healing I would like to add:
Patsy and Dan.
For the potluck afterwards? I have doubled our Thanksgiving order from the Gluten Free Bakery.
Bringing: 1 Apple pie, 1 Pumpkin pie, 1 raspberry chocolate cake, 2 loaves of cranberry bread, flat bread (I’m going to make Molly’s (ABP) Hot Artichoke dip for that) and cookies!
Dan and I will be around for awhile and then I’m taking him in to the doctor’s.
10:00 am on November 17th, 2011
TYB, Isn’t our prayer circle Friday evening, and not tonight? We thought it was tomorrow. Please let us know.
10:01 am on November 17th, 2011
Barb,
My dad is with you. He takes no meds. When he went in for his colonoscopy two years ago, they sent pre-0p nurses to take his history three times. He thinks each one was looking for a different story. He thinks they suspected dementia. They couldn’t believe that at his age he took no pills. Finally the doctor came in and asked him his secret. He told him that he stayed away from doctors.
10:04 am on November 17th, 2011
Barb,
You’re right; it’s Friday, but as I said in my previous post at my age… I don’t think that there is a memory pill. Truthfully, though, I didn’t forget, I just wasn’t thinking. In any case an extra prayer minute wouldn’t have hurt, and I know that it’s tomorrow.
10:10 am on November 17th, 2011
Shots!….No way Jose! None for me, thanks …grunt!…. Although, I did overhear her telling her mother that she needs to make an appointment for Bo. His rabies shot are over-due…heh!heh!…Poor bastard. …heh!heh!
Home!…Hey, my friend is home today. Something about giving her mother a Big Break from the chaos….snort!… I love when my friend is home. I will have a great time watching every move she makes…snorkel! sneeze!
Mr. Tibbs!…My friend and your Paw have the same theory about doctors. The least you see of them, the healthier you are…chorkel!
10:11 am on November 17th, 2011
Laughing here TYB, I read your Dad’s experience to Zoë and she totally agrees!
I finally found a doctor who understands that NO I will not be taking the latest “cure” for my HCV infection. Not until they come up with something that doesn’t use interferon. The other docs thought it was terrible that I wouldn’t do it!
Tough luck for them.
10:37 am on November 17th, 2011
When Barb went in the other day for one of her 1-year check ups after her surgery, the doctor kept pushing the flu and pneumonia shots. She wanted to know why Barb wouldn’t take them. She said the the flu shot only covers certain flu, and she doesn’t get flu or pneumonia anyway.
10:43 am on November 17th, 2011
Our Prayer list is growing.
Thank you for the Time Zone Map Staff.
We did forget one important person though.
Wolfie, who suggested the Healing Circle of Prayer in the first place would want his dear mom on the list I am certain.
Melanie: Adding Patsy and Dan.
The situation with Macy’s friend’s burial is incomprehensible to us. She has a burial plot that can’t be used? Wolfie is right. The world has gone crazy.
As to the H3N8 flu shots for canines…the very name sounds like something out of a SyFy movie to me. We agree with TYB, Barb&Magpie and one veterinarian who declared: “The only safe vaccine is one that is never used”.
10:50 am on November 17th, 2011
Don’t let them give you the shot Chet. I had the pneumonia shot when I was in the hospital (no way to avoid it) but I refused the flu shot a few weeks ago. Staying away from doctors is the best thing to do.
Good morning all.
10:50 am on November 17th, 2011
Morning all –
Well, Mama says we don’t have to get shot – we dont’hang around with any other dogs, so we should be fine. And if by some weird chance, we were to get a kennel cough, she says its pretty easy to treat, especially since we aren’t already loaded with “maintenance chemicals”
Now, she on the other hand, did get the flu shot and the pnuemonia shot. Her doc says she has a “surprised intune system” …or something that sounds kinda like that. So in the past, she has actually ended up in the hospital for something as silly as a paper cut. (whispering – we think she’s just kind of a drama queen)
Question for everyone – do you all want a written prayer for tomorrow night with all the names? Mama said she would be honored to do that IF you want. Or do you all want to just have your own thoughts at prayer time?
Rio – see if you can’t get your friend to give you some extra treats to celebrate being home with you. Course, that might mean an extra Brutal Walk too….
10:51 am on November 17th, 2011
Hey, Bear,
I like that comment about the vaccines and agree with you and the ver 100%
10:57 am on November 17th, 2011
YSAS story:
Today YSAS is being a cop. Filming in a park near where he lives. Which is good. (Snickering)
My sons and I are NOT morning people. YSAS had to get up and there by 5 am. No coffee. He gets there, gets in his cop gear and starts to do his paperwork when he remembers that he left his ID back at the apartment.
He starts running home. Right through OWS. Real cops stationed everywhere! Homeland Security everywhere! Private security everywhere! And here goes YSAS running through. He is putting out the following thoughts:
“I am not a cop.”
“I am not really here.”
Must of worked because he got to the apartment, got his ID and back to the film with no trouble.
He has been drinking coffee ever since.
10:59 am on November 17th, 2011
Maybe any one who would like to write a prayer could do so . .?
11:01 am on November 17th, 2011
Rio – Why would your friend be telling her mother that she needs to make an appointment for a rabies shot for Bo? Isn’t he leaving? Wouldn’t his family do that?
Is Bo staying?
11:02 am on November 17th, 2011
Melanie – gotta love that boy!
We are bringing lobsters for everyone for the pot luck. And gallons of hot melted butter. And one little filet mignon for the one who is allergic to lobster – can’t leave anyone out!
11:03 am on November 17th, 2011
Told ya
Told ya
Rio’s got a brooo-ther!
11:15 am on November 17th, 2011
Oh, Riooooo. I’m a’feared we had the same thought here…why is your friend taking Bo to the vet? hmmmmm? You may be deluding yourself about him leaving by tomorrow. Something’s not quite adding up here…..
11:34 am on November 17th, 2011
MollysMom!….Just what exactly are you insinuating anyways?…snort!
11:34 am on November 17th, 2011
Royals: Lobster and filet mignon. Yummers! What could be better.
Melanie: Chuckling here picturing YSAS muttering “I am not a cop. I am not really here” while making a mad dash to the apartment.
About the prayers…one thing we, personally, would like to add. For example in the prayer for Macy and family. Instead of asking for a very specific outcome (as in a certain job) we suggest a prayer for: “this or something better”. The Great Spirit knows better than we and sees infinite possibilities, where we usually focus on one.
11:36 am on November 17th, 2011
Upstairs!…I gotta go upstairs and watch her pack some little boxes into other little boxes…heh!…Seriously, I cannot miss a thing!…grunt!…Plus, youse guys are freakin’ me out!…sneeze!
11:42 am on November 17th, 2011
Rose: Thank you for the link. An interesting article.
Dawson: I see Alice is making sure you enjoy every minute. heh, heh.
What to bring to the potluck. Pondering…..
11:55 am on November 17th, 2011
Riö: check your SDD
Lobstah bug, cahn’t wait-ah. Ayuh
12:03 pm on November 17th, 2011
Prayer list.
Royal Mum: You have a special way with words.
We would love to have you write the prayer.
12:21 pm on November 17th, 2011
I am pleased to announce that Thing 1 and Thing 2 have officially been named, Mick and Jodi respectively. Mick and Jodi, the pups are named after dear friends of the Kennel.
I am not please to announce that six gloves were harmed in the making of Mick and Jodi’s puppyhood in a single day.
Rio: I think Mollypop’s mom may have a point.
12:35 pm on November 17th, 2011
Canine Flu Shots…Mom says, ask your vet because the vet knows what is going on in the area where you live. The vet also needs to know about your dogs’ activities.
We are glad you brought up the subject of doggie flu shots because it reminded mom to ask my vet.
My vet knows I go to the dog park and an occasional half day at doggie day cre, but when mom asked about the flu shot two years ago, the vet said no because she didn’t trust the vaccine. They keep changing and improving (we hope) the vaccines so mom is going to ask again.
12:52 pm on November 17th, 2011
Lobster!!! I never get any lobster. I live in the middle of the desert, but worse than that, mom doesn’t like lobster. I will gratefully eat her share and mine.
We would appreciate it if the Royal’s mum would write a prayer.
Rio is very good at prayers, but right now we fear he is dealing with a serious case of denial.
I’m thinking about what to bring to the potluck, but Stover can bring pies.
1:03 pm on November 17th, 2011
I’d be happy to bring pies.
1:10 pm on November 17th, 2011
Rose, Thanks for the link to the article. According to it, I need a flu shopt because I am in contact with a lots of other dogs.
Mom says it is hard to balance what is safe for your dog with your dog having a good time in life. She says the safest thing would just be to keep me at home, but she doesn’t want to do that. She doesn’t trust vaccines either so these things have to be balanced.
The very nice guy who lives across the street from us now has shingles and he was vaccinated against shingles a few years ago.
1:13 pm on November 17th, 2011
Doctors! I’m in the stay away if you can can camp.
Flu shots: I personally think they are a scam but I get one because my Bosses strongly urge me to do so. Once I retire…forget it!
T&G: I would love it if you wrote up a prayer for tomorrow – then we can each add whatever we want as well. Filet Mignon – yummy!
Melanie: Hilarious story about YSAS. A cop on a mission!
1:16 pm on November 17th, 2011
Thank you Stover. Mom says I shouldn’t be so rude and tell someone what to bring, but I can’t pass up any opportunity to have some of your pies.
1:46 pm on November 17th, 2011
We will bring catnip mousies (only just the tiniest bit damp) to the potluck. Maybe Alice Johnson could bring something for a spirited game of “Catch and Release” after dinner….or FOR dinner….
1:49 pm on November 17th, 2011
Rio – It wasn’t that long ago when you were left home alone all day long. Now you have a very nice life that even includes cawfee and Zingers, although your friend doesn’t know about that part. How about a dog brother to add to all of that? Someone to go romping with out in the yard. What fun!
1:58 pm on November 17th, 2011
SH: I’m laughing…but thank you.
2:12 pm on November 17th, 2011
I second Siber. B, Please bring pies – especially my favorite, chocolate cream. We can’t have too many desserts I always say.
For the potluck tomorrow evening
We plan to bring our usual fare:
Big T-Bone steaks for all to share
Bear likes to enjoy a double treat,
Meat and then, gnawing on the bone.
Moi, Salmon filets, one of which,
I plan to make my very own.
2:56 pm on November 17th, 2011
Barb says we always need brussel sprouts at every dinner, so she will bring some carmelized b.s. heh!
Melanie, You could have been one of those code writer guys in WWII. What the hell is OWS? We have been befuddled for 2 hours over that one.
3:03 pm on November 17th, 2011
Post!…..Hey, listen up!…snort!….Someone here totally got her act together this morning and mailed off three sets of little gift cards to the first 3 guys who ordered them…heh!…And, get this. They will arrive in all three different addresses this coming Saturday….woooooo!….So if you are one of The Three, be sure to check your doorstep Saturday for a little box that has another little box inside of it…chorkel!…If she stayed home all the time, she would get a shit-load of important stuff like this done…grunt!
More!… She would really appreciate knowing when you guys receive them so she can stop worrying about all those little cards inside those little boxes…heh!
Even More!…snort!…There is also something special from me inside each little box that has the other little box in it…heh!..So don’t throw away all those little boxes till you have checked them thoroughly…wuffle!
3:14 pm on November 17th, 2011
Rio: Assuming that I was one of the first three, I’ll keep a look out Saturday and let you know.
3:19 pm on November 17th, 2011
Stover!…You have assumed correctly!…heh!….Be on the watch-out for little boxes and a special surprise from me!…snort!
3:34 pm on November 17th, 2011
The surprise is not carmelized b.s. is it?
3:42 pm on November 17th, 2011
This is fun. I like surprises.
Barb: I don’t remember what the “b.s.” refers to.
3:45 pm on November 17th, 2011
Finally figured it out Occupy Wall Street. Jeeze, Melanie, you make us think way too hard!!!!

Bee, Look up a couple of posts – b.s. = brussel sprouts.

Hey Bee- you up for the job?
5:06 pm on November 17th, 2011
Basil and Sage: I’m laughing! Thank you but I’m retiring at the end of December.
5:09 pm on November 17th, 2011
YeeHAW! What a good job by Melanie, the Royal’s mum, BStover and Rebecca. And of course they had a good subject to talk about. I agree with Basil and Sage. Yes we CAN!
Oh and Alice M. has requested I make up many batches of popovers for the potluck tomorrow night. She is going to stuff them with something. I have no idea what -q2ddxc but she says there was a request???? Oh dear, I hope not!
5:10 pm on November 17th, 2011
Oops my bottle of water fell on the keyboard…luckily very tightly sealed. But it added to my post…snicker. right in the middle there.

I’m making spudder soup with smoked kielbasa and biscuit for dinner.
5:41 pm on November 17th, 2011
Bee- if you are retired, you will have much more time to give to getting the country straightened out.
Melanie – YOU DID GREAT!!!!!! Mama says you deserve the credit- you were the one with the idea to nominate AJ, you did the writing – all she did was add in the drama queen touches.
Alice- can’t wait for the potluck.
5:42 pm on November 17th, 2011
Staff, for a minute there we thought we had another code to try to figure out! Glad it was just a typing glitch.
BREAKING NEWS!!! Demi is divorcing Ashton. Bout dam time.
5:50 pm on November 17th, 2011
Rio – I’m also expecting some little boxes with a “surprise.” It’s not a surprise like you left by the potted plant, is it?
6:12 pm on November 17th, 2011
Barb&Magpie: Yes, we just read the news about Demi & Ashton. Quite surprised to hear the infidelities had gone on for the past six years. We only recently heard of their marital problems. Big, big age difference there. Lots of generation gap issues to contend with.
B: Will you be moving to warmer climates in December, or do you plan to winter in Florida and spend summers in Michigan? This is very exciting news for you!
6:12 pm on November 17th, 2011
I’ll bring dinner rolls and AJ’s favorite jam for the potluck after the prayer circle tomorrow.
Anyone up for a retirement party for Professor B next month?
6:19 pm on November 17th, 2011
SnowBella: Retirement Party. Yes!
6:28 pm on November 17th, 2011
A big Thanks to B.Stover, Melanie, the Royal’s mum and Bella for all your work on the application to S.K. for AJ being a Living Legend! I am an excited voter. Go AJ!
Snowhook Bella: Jodi’s helping AJ with the phone call can only impress the Stormy Kromer people even more!
6:32 pm on November 17th, 2011
The SK vote is something we can get our friends to do. If I have my way, all the dogs at the dog park will be voting for AJ.
6:41 pm on November 17th, 2011
Basil and Sage are correct. Melanie deserves the credit. She wrote the application and I just edited it.
If I go to Florida (remember I really don’t like Florida), it would be in March. (And I have projects planned–VanGogh letters and paintings, and studying Old English–so no time to run anything.)
How do we vote by the way?
7:08 pm on November 17th, 2011
Bee – Mama is SHOCKED! Shocked I tell you! Not like Florida? Seriously? Whats not to like?
Being warm in the winter?
Shoveling sun off the driveway?
Going out in the backyard to grab a grapefruit for breakfast?
Incredible flora and fauna (especially in the Everglades)?
The Keys?
The white sand beaches and warm ocean waves?
Early bird dinners at Golden Corral? (giggle)
Anytime you want to stay home, Mama is willing to do an impersonation of you and go to Florida in your place. She should be ablet o get away with it as long as no one asks her to spell or punctuate anything.
7:09 pm on November 17th, 2011
Parteeeeee!…..Hey I am always up for a big blow-out parteee!…snort!…. Stover’s retirement party will be HUGE!…heh!…Wow! Excitement abounds tonight!…wheeze!…I wonder how AJ is taking the whole thing. Probably in big Giant Strides…heh!
7:13 pm on November 17th, 2011
Hi Everyone! Mom was in a training class all day so we couldn’t use the computer. We just read thru all we missed last evening and today. Alice J’s Catch & Release exploits are killing us. We would greatly appreciate a prayer written by the Royal Mum for tomorrow evening’s prayer circle.
Rio definitely has a new brother since his friend is taking Bo for shots.
And now we have to figure out what to bring to the potluck.
7:14 pm on November 17th, 2011
Who is on Kirby T’s emergentree?
I’m getting worried.
I’m adding someone else to the Circle of Healing. YSAS

Rio, Are you bringing your little brother to the party?
7:22 pm on November 17th, 2011
OMD: Did you see those Fabulous Polar Bear Earrings in the Boutique? They are a new item in the Royal Mum’s shop.
B: Melanie sent a link to the SK site for voting. I’ll try to find it.
7:43 pm on November 17th, 2011
Okay, we can’t vote until November 21st.
Here’s the link: http://www.stormykromer.com/living-legend
YSAS is NOT sick. Got a panic call from his spiritual father. I just thought he could use the help getting to the next level of his career.
On the Dan front, Dan’s blood pressure is too high. We are figuring it out. Will be about 2 weeks until we know something.
Patsy is barking at me because I am not giving her tummies.

Whoooooweee Snowhook and AJ!
Er, um, Rio, since Bo is gettin his shots, I would have to agree you now have a brother. Is getting ready for the Alaska trip too?
8:16 pm on November 17th, 2011
Just read back last night’s blog….Sorry about your Dad, Bluekat. I am sending healing thoughts and prayers to you.
I’m in on the prayer circle. It would be an honor to have T&G write a prayer.
8:20 pm on November 17th, 2011
Prayer!….I did have a specific prayer request but then Bo and I started getting along a little better today ….grunt!…So what does he do? He bit the hand that feeds him when she was trying to get his All-Leather halter on him…gah!…She was not happy about that, let me tell you…sniff!… If you’ve ever been bitten by a Pug you know its more Gruffle and Growl than real teeth, but the intent was there and that pissed my friend off big time…sneeze!…So Bo is on the ole shit list again tonight…heh!heh!…Poor Bastard.
Bite!….The thing is, Pugs do not bite in a mean way. This is very unusual indeed…sniff!… She looked it up and told both of us that “If a pug is adopted and he displays this sort of bad behavior it is most likely because he has been neglected and/or abused.”….wuffle!… “Have patience and this behavior will stop.”….heh!…So the bottom line is he gets out of going on walks till he settles down and she can get the halter on him again with no fuss….grump!…I’m kicking myself because I never once thought to do that to get out of all those Brutal Walks….wheeze!….The guy is a genius. But he is still on the SOL list…heh!
8:25 pm on November 17th, 2011
Adopted!

Oooh Rio – I’m so happy for you! This will be wonderful.

If Bo us a rescue, and he must be…most rescues come with baggage and their issues can be fixed with patience.

We know if is very late and most sensible peoPle are in bed, but we wanted to say that Mama is taking notes on all the prayer requests. She is taking this very seriously and is working on crafting the right words for all.
(she’s not quite sure about what to say about the Bo -Rio relationship, but she will find the words somewhere)
Meantime – goodnight all. Get your prayer powers warmed up – it’s gonna be a big one….
