First Mention Of Thanksgiving Turkey In The Chet And Bernie Series

Albie Rose lived in the biggest house I’d ever seen, more like a palace, surrounded by high walls. A guy with big shoulders and a gun on his hip led us across vast green lawns to a huge swimming pool. On a deck chair by the pool lay a fat old man in a tiny bathing suit. His skin was oiled and deeply tanned, just about the color and texture of a turkey Leda had left too long in the oven one Thanksgiving. I tried not to look.

    C.Hobbit, have a good day.

    Abbie Rose . . he liked Chet. Especially after Chet dove into his pool to retrieve that toy. Then poor Abbie died. Oh, Wait! He died just for the people on Chet’s bloo!

    Awesome. Wonder what ever happened . .

    Good morning C Hobbit and Melanie!
    We are now picturing the turkey guy in the skimpy bathing suit again. Wow.
    Does anyone use any of those alarms that wake you with gradual light instead of music or noise? Mom is thinking of getting one, but we just know it will wake us guys up sooner than she wants us awake.

    Top of the Morning!

    CHH, you have a geat pre-Thanksgiving day too. How are your eyes doing?

    Good Morning, Melanie!

    Wookie, I read your post last night. (I always lurk and/or post on the night’s before blog). You can tell your mom Pleasantville is still a nice place to grow up. It is one of the towns the Prof and I love most. The downtown section is still so “Pleasantville” (the movie). It is a place that the Prof and I have on our places to move consideration list.

    By the time I get up the day is half over for your eastern types.

    I have a request for update on which checkpoints need how much so I will update soon (as soon as my eyes can focus on numbers).

    Wolfie: Thanks Wolfie Wigglebutt – your last night’s donation to the Giants checkpoint is accepted. Go Giants!

    There has been a request to rename the 4 legged Rainbow Bridge checkpoint into the Mollypop & friends checkpoint. This if for two obvious reasons: One is that we really, really need to honor Agent Mollypop; the other is that not all doggies going over the bridge have four legs! There is a 3rd reason too…now, what was that…carpola! it disappeared…cawfee please! Please weigh in on this, Mollypop’s Mom and Plunderers.

    Personally, I would like a better name for the 2 legged memorial also (any ideas?). But…I digress

    🙂 Checkpoint Update 🙂

    14 checkpoints are fully funded; 9 of those are by individual donations and 6 by group efforts. Congratulations!

    Six more checkpoints are in process of being funded by the group:
    Rose & Professor’s Anchorage checkpoint has $200. ($50 needed);
    Friends & Family (2 leg) Yentna checkpoint has $180. ($70. needed);
    Possibly Mollypop & friends Skwentna checkpoint has $160. ($90. needed);
    Shiek & friends Takotna checkpoint has $135. ($115. needed);
    The Giants Unalakleet checkpoint has $100. ($150. needed); and
    The Retirees Safety checkpoint has $85. ($165. needed).

    There are only 5 checkpoints yet to be named. I do expect a bit of a lull in donations as we look forward to the store and auction opening…but I have been wrong before. I know we have all been emptying our piggy banks and cleaning our couch cushions and checking the man in this houses pockets! (well – that last one is just me.) We appreciate all your donations and consider that the ones that can are donating in the name of all Plunderers, some of whom cannot give monetarily yet are an integral part of the whole that is the Chet the Dog Blog Plunderer Community. We are thankful for each and every one of you, including Lurkers.

    Mom really loves her Prius. It is her favorite car ever. But we need a 2nd vehicle capable of fitting all 4 of us huskies comfortably, as well as be able to make it in out our very long gravel lane when the snow has drifted during the day. The lane is flat and surrounded by big open fields with no wind/snow break. Oh, and good gas mileage would be icing on the cake.
    It is true that Subarus are dog-tested, but are they KAT-approved?

    I wonder if it is low glycemic. I better google that.

    “Glycemic Index
    The glycemic index is a rating system that can help diabetics predict how different foods will affect their blood sugar levels. Cassava has a low glycemic index of 46, which means that it is less likely than some foods to cause a rapid rise in blood glucose levels. If you are diabetic, cassava could be a healthier choice than white potatoes, which have a high glycemic index of 85, according to DietAndFitnessToday.”

    Every thing sounds good except the yuccas. Even Rachel Ray says they have the same thing for TG dinner every year. IMHO, mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing are must haves. When Barb was growing up her mom always made a raw cranberry-apples-jello salad. It was a big production because we had to get out the old hand crank grinder. Now it is easy to make with a food processor. She is going to do a small dinner in 2 weeks with Josh and Jess and will do her cranberries. Also is going to try stuffing from scratch. Dry the bread, bake conrbread and dry that, etc.

    We also vote for Mollypop and Friends.

    Hmmm, I am being bad. When we were growing up, both Zoë and Raven worked their patooties off. At Thanksgiving we had the normal feast. Our cranberry relish always came from a can. We would open both sides of the can and slide it out whole into a dish. It sat there wiggling and jiggling. And it still had the indents from the can.

    We thought that was wonderful. Guess what I bought today?

    Melanie: I had never had that until I moved to Canada 19 years ago. My new Canadian family served cranberry sauce that way. They said if you couldn’t see the ridges from the can it wasn’t proper. Heh!

    I have no memory of the Yucca thanksgiving. Maybe it was one that I wasn’t there for. I suppose there were a few. I think 2 anyway in the last 20 years. I know I wasn’t there when he fed Junice the wrong style potatoes. (She only wanted mashed.) Well, we have the box of potato buds if it is too yucca for us.

    Everyone else liked the yucca except me, and the yucca wasn’t terrible, it’s just I love my mashed potatoes and gravy too much. If both were served, I’d have 2 cups of mashed and 2 Tbsp. yucca. Call me old-fashioned, I agree with Junice and Barb and Maggie!

    The name changes are official! We have the Mollypop & friends checkpoint (Skwentna) and we have the Family & Friends checkpoint (Yentna).
    It has also been suggested and approved to add the name of BlueCat’s horse to make Shiek and (Bluecat’s horse) & friends.
    Hmmmm. What is the name of that horse?

    Donations have been slipping in whenever I turn my back for a minute. 🙂

    Long day has ended. Two hour drive south for an appointment; two hour drive east for another appointment and then 90 minute drive north to get home. Ugh.

    Eyes: don’t know why the doctor feels they are good when my near vision is hazy and is definitely worst than before. Doctor says it should improve in the weeks/months ahead. Right now I am using so many artificial tears throughout the day, I don’t know what I am going to do once I am home in the cold, dry arctic. Oh well. Doctor says to hold things as close as I need to read. I said, “what about using reading glasses?” Duh.

    Masquers: I once put my car (a trusty Subaru) in a snowbank due to a kat in the car. But that is a story for another time.

    C.Hobbit, I am naturally near sighted. I need computer glasses since the computer is two feet away from my face. I need distance glasses to see anything besides an impressionistic world. I thought I would try reading glasses once. I had to wear my distance glasses and the reading glasses at the same time. Seemed a bit much.
    To read I just hold the book 8 inches from my eyes.

    Home again home again jiggedy jig. Pop sold the Cruiser today. He was to meet the seller at the notary after work.
    Mom drove her oh-so-long commute home, and on the way stopped at the bank and the apple place. So she got home a little late. She changed her coat and rushed up to the barn to muck all the stalls, then got yhe horses in just as it was getting dark and cold. As soon as she got the last horse in her stall, the phone rang. It was Pop telling her that she had to drive to the other side of the county to sign the title because it was in both their names. Well, she still had to feed horses, and of course she had to feed us and Buddy and T.C. Thenwe all piled into the Prius to drive there. As soon as we got on the bypass, traffic came to a standstill. We were sitting there for an hour. Whew! What a night. Now she needs to make dinner. “If it’s not one thing, it’s another. It’s always something.”

    On the subject of Thanksgiving, we also eat (and love) the jelled cranberries with the can ridges. Our cousin serves both cranberry relish and that canned stuff, and everybody eats just the canned stuff.
    Also,we don’t do mashed potatoes…those are for normal days. For Thanksgiving, it must be potatoe filling, which we think must be Pennsylvania Dutch. It is made with mashed potatoes, onions, celery, and bread…all baked in the oven.

    Bluecat, for some reason we couldn’t remember Leo’s name. Mom has it written down upstairs, but we didn’t know that. She showed us when she got home. So Shiek and Leo will chair the equine checkpoint, where they can hang out with the rest of them: Annie, Ned, Chato, and Abby.

    C Hobbit, Mom had lasik forever ago (about 14 years ago). They undercorrected her, and she could have gone back for an adjustment but the undercorrection kept her from needing reading glasses for many years. She does need them now. She keeps cheap drug store reading glasses in every room and vehicle! She also has a pair of distance glasses, in the weakest prescription possible. She only uses them when driving at nighttime. She has always been very happy that she got that lasik surgery.

    That’s our Cousin Lord Harold of Pembroke! Cousin Harold! Over here!!!

    Yup – Cousin Harold was always a “go your own way” kinda Corgi. He just couldn’t do the whole “simper around the Queen’s feet” thing. He was much happier chasing the kitchen kats, or digging in the garden, then rolling on the royal aubusson carpet. His poor mother tried and tried to teach him to sit up and beg, roll over on command, and not bark at the Palace Guards with their big furry hats. But nope – ole Harold just wouldn’t beg for his kibble or sit patiently next to the throne.
    Finally, he got his chance. The Queen decided to let Harold follow his own dreams. She sent him to live with some distant relatives in the far north country.
    Nowadays, Harold spends his time in harness pulling a miniature sled. Don’t kid yourselves that they don’t go fast – these guys are little speed demons, as Gilly could tell you. She wanted to go visit Harold and try out for the team, but then she heard about the running in the snow part, and decided to just be a penpal instead.
    But now she wants to know about this Limbo thing….
