Fido
“With the Gettysburg anniversary and all,” says Admin, “have we ever discussed Fido, Lincoln’s dog?”
“Not to my knowledge,” says Spence. “But we could search the site.”
“Where’s the fun in that?” says Admin. “Lincoln loved Fido (Fido as the pre-eminent generic dog name dates from this particular dog) but Mary Todd L. refused to let Fido come to Washington when Lincoln won the presidency. He had photos of Fido taken in Springfield as a comfort for his sons (3 still alive at that point). Apparently Mary Todd L. had concerns about muddy tracks in the White House. Fido was still living in Springfield when they brought the body back.”

I think Fido should have lived in the White House.
Good morning all.
8:29 am on November 21st, 2013
Good morning, everyone! How sad for Fido. Mary Todd Lincoln may have needed meds. Just saying. Boys (and girls) need their pets to learn love and responsibility.
Thursday, wow so soon. Macy’s mom…get thee to someone in the medical profession…NOW! B&M: Hope the B part is feeling better. Health to all for there’s no other who’ll take the place of our dearest friends (yes, being silly/serious)
Have an untainted Thursday!
9:10 am on November 21st, 2013
Macy’s Mom: Know it is still early your time but you NEED to see some sort of quack, errr Dr. Get on the phone, get moving. Do Not procrastinate.
9:30 am on November 21st, 2013
Welcome back Nana!
9:50 am on November 21st, 2013
Have to go back and see what Macy posted. Her mom was under the weather when they had their meet and greet. Barb is feeling much better this morning, just lots of coughing, but we can deal with that.
Mary Lincoln was said to need some meds. Fido should have come to Washington. She had her priorities messed up!
9:58 am on November 21st, 2013
Interesting thing – Fido is generally considered to translate to “always faithful” However, the “o” on the end makes the word a personal trait, so the more accurate translation would be “I trust”.
Wonder what Lincoln had in mind when he named that little guy.
And Macy – doctor! Now!
10:03 am on November 21st, 2013
We agree, Macy’s mom, you need a doctor and quick.
We have been trying to upload a fun picture from the wedding. Can’t get it done. The photographer said photos can be shared and put on F.B. We can email it from our computer but can’t get in on here. Maybe Melanie can put it on for us.
11:01 am on November 21st, 2013
Greetings!
Mama Luna! Big hugs and tummies for you. I miss you when you are not on the blog. I miss Belle Starr too .
Macy, please! please! PLEASE go to the ER! A regular MD is just going to send you there anyway.
Yes, Fido should have lived in the White House? Does anyone know if he was really the first FIRST DOG?
11:06 am on November 21st, 2013
Macy: Please give your mom dainty licks and let me know if you need help forcing, er blurring her to the doctor.
B&M: I hope you’re feeling tip-top soon.
Wose: Don’t beat yourself up about the job situation. Your job right now is to never forget you are loved.
Wolfie: We are thinking of your family.
My mama is heading to the top of the world again this morning. With the windchill it is -42.
Has anyone seen the Thieves? I haven’t seen hide nor hair of them since they left to help break Nana out of rehab.
11:07 am on November 21st, 2013
Macy we agree. Emergency room or urgent care. Really! please!
11:12 am on November 21st, 2013
Wose: Belle Starr is sulking. Yesterday, a couple of people were trying to describe my mama as part of her leadership program. They had trouble finding a word and finally one of them said she has glimpses of some kind of magic. Belle Starr has taken this as proof positive that my mama stole Belle’s sparkles to make fairy dust.
11:21 am on November 21st, 2013
Mama Luna: thanks for reminding me of that. I know there are some who love me and I love them back.
Yes, your mama is a Pixie Sprite , and best damn handler’s wife. I am sorry I said a bad word, but I mean it in a good way for your mama. She is just magic! I think she does have a magic wand with a big sparkly star on top!
But tell Belle Starr that she is still my Sparkiest VBFF!
11:23 am on November 21st, 2013
Mama Luna: Please make sure your Pixie Sprite take her Airborne before she goes to the top of the world. I am worrit that she has been getting sick a lot lately.
11:25 am on November 21st, 2013
Wose: Can I come stay with you? I have my sparkly pink back pack ready to go. I will bring all of what is left for my sparkles so you know who can’t get her paws on them.
11:31 am on November 21st, 2013
We think that Belle and Wose were made for each other.
Hopefully the lack of communication from Macy’s mom means she is at a medical place. Paws crossed here and pawsitive thoughts.

Thank you T & G for the assist!
12:04 pm on November 21st, 2013
Good Morning, Good Morning!!!
The Sun is Shining here in Seattle,
Nana is up and about with a Smile on her face.
What could be better than that? You tell me.
Royals: Great photo of Barb’s family wedding! And, thanks for the info on the First Dogs Name.
Barb&Magpie: What a Fun Wedding that must have been! Great news…you are feeling better…almost tip-top?
Staff: Are you in Mpls? (must catch up on the posts)
B: Yes, Fido should have been allowed to live in the
White House. In our opinion Faithful Fido was treated most shamefully by Mary Todd Lincoln. Sniff.
What’s this about our Min-Pin? You know who had better be talking to the Doc as we speak. Or Else!
Luna: Thanks for the update. Pancho & Lefty are enjoying waiting on Nana hand in paw. They promise to return home soon. I was about to say welcome home to SnowBella, but here she is taking off for the top of the world once again. Tell her to take some Magic Fairy Dust with her and Stay Safe.
Wose: What did we miss? Will have to go back and read last nights comments. There are more than Some that love you. You Know you are Loved so much by All the Plunderers. Especially Masquers and me.
Herd of Hounds: You are so right. Belle Starr and Wose are Soul-Mates.
12:04 pm on November 21st, 2013
Macy’s Mom, If you can’t get into see your doctor, maybe you can get into Urgent Care. If now that, then the ER. Go this morning!!!! NOW!!!!
Barb, Glad you are feeling better.
Wose, ditto to what Luna said.
We didn’t know Lincoln had a dog named Fido. Lincoln could have used the comfort and companionship of a dog. We know we are narrow minded and prejudiced, but we don’t like Mary Todd Lincoln anymore. gah She would have had servants to clean up dog tracks in the White House.
12:08 pm on November 21st, 2013
Siber-H: Servants and Dog Booties would have solved the dog tracks problem. She was a mean uncaring woman in IMHO.
12:08 pm on November 21st, 2013
Bear, Woo Hoo and Hi!! It is so good to have you back with us.
We have a 50% chance of Snow for 3 days starting tomorrow. I’m waiting.
12:09 pm on November 21st, 2013
Siber, We agree about Mary Todd Lincoln. She was heartless.
12:13 pm on November 21st, 2013
Maybe she was a Kat person
12:18 pm on November 21st, 2013
Herbs, Stranger things have been known to happen in the Universe.
12:26 pm on November 21st, 2013
In our sometimes NOT so humble opinion, Mary Todd Lincoln should have been medicated when young, but they didn’t have our plethora of pharmacopeia. So, instead of being a productive human, she was a nitwit, a silly socks, a negative nellie, and a dumb donkey. There, now we of the HOH have got that (word Bernie says is ok), out of our systems.
12:33 pm on November 21st, 2013
OK, HOH voiced their opinions, now it is mom’s turn. I think Mrs. Lincoln had a lot in common with my adopted son. He is a bipolar and scitzoaffective (sp?) person who I have frequently reminded to take his meds (thank Dawg for pharmaceuticals) orally or I would give them to him rectally since I sleep a lot less. Perhaps today, she would have been more humane.
12:36 pm on November 21st, 2013
Wasn’t she bi-polar of did she suffer from depression? I know she had an issue that modern drugs could have helped.
12:38 pm on November 21st, 2013
HOH: Silly Socks. Love that one!
Siber: Snow! How exciting for you. I have faith it will happen (eventually). Kool runnings.
Herbs: Mrs. Lincoln may have liked kats, but WE would not have liked her. Sniff.

Here is a question for a birder, most likely Staff. One of Barb’s Grands want a 2-way bird house for Christmas. It attaches to a window and you can view the birds nesting inside. There is some type of shield that prevents the birds from seeing you. Our concern is that the birds might hit the window and get injured or die, while flying to the bird house. Most likely sparrows will use the nest, and maybe they are better at nesting close to a house. What is your opinion.
1:54 pm on November 21st, 2013
Barb – birds are no more likely to hit the window the bird house is mounted on than they would be to hit a wall.
But we volunteer to wait underneath to “assist” any discombobulated snacks….um, we mean dear, little birdies.
2:08 pm on November 21st, 2013
Belle Starr, You know you are ALWAYS welcome at our place! I might have some sparkly stuff for your here.
Barb, That is a great photograph. Looks like everyone had a good time!
WooooooooHoooooo! Bear and Masquers back on the blog!
HOH: Belle Starr and I are sisters of a different mother.
Thanks all youse guys for always thinking of me,
2:12 pm on November 21st, 2013
Herbs, We were thinking that since birds will sometimes fly into a clear window that it could be a problem. Other concern we just read about is that the suction cups don’t hold and the bird houses have a tendency to fall. Then the poor snacks, err, babies, might be in trouble.
2:20 pm on November 21st, 2013
Just saw FOCs Patch, Baxter and Mick up above. One of them is definitely and English Shepherd. Looks a lot like moi.
3:02 pm on November 21st, 2013
Wose, we would say SAME sisters of a different mother. Two peas from the same pod. A pair of … Ya know. We love all y ‘all.
3:17 pm on November 21st, 2013
Has everyone see the Kmart Joe Boxer Jingle Bells commercial.
As Mama says, “Holy Cats!”
3:36 pm on November 21st, 2013
Barb, about your birdhouse question.
Usually it is suggested that bird feeders (so I assume houses) be either far away or very close to windows. If they are close the birds are going so slowly that if they miss their home (unlikely) they will be uninjured. Far enough away and it won’t be a problem either.
You usually only have to worry about bird strikes if they can see light through one window and then out through another. If they see light they think there is a route through the window. So don’t put it on a window where you can see through the house and out another window.
Another concern is heat. Do not put the bird house on the south or west facing windows. The direct sun can be too hot for the birds. The directions will probably mention this.
Your grands will learn about life (and death) with something like this. Their Mom might be annoyed. I remember you posted that she didn’t like them seeing reality. Nature can be cruel. It might be the most wonderful experience so don’t it deter you.
3:39 pm on November 21st, 2013
Yes, HOH, Belle Starr and I are very much alike.
3:41 pm on November 21st, 2013
Herb kats: Saw the commercial. Shook our booties and WOW!
3:59 pm on November 21st, 2013
Staff, Thanks for the good information. Didn’t know that about birds seeing the pass thru. We just thought they were seeing tree reflections and flying into the glass. On your comment about life and death – one review we read said the parent birds left the nest due to too much noise or being able to see into the house. They left the hatchling to die. That could be a little upsetting for the kiddies. Barb said she could see Jack constantly pecking on the glass and Lyla yelling at him, creating havoc.
4:25 pm on November 21st, 2013
Computer is down (again). I’m at library to let you know not to worry.
5:33 pm on November 21st, 2013
Thanks Dawson.
Wonder how Macy’s mom is doing?
I think Melanie is under the Quilt today. Hope she is feeling better.
Tonight for dinner Barb is making roast chicken and Brussels sprouts, fresh picked last night by Josh from their garden. Those babies are hardy! She is going to try a caramelized version (T & G’s recipe) with a couple of changes. Adding shallots, dried cranberries and crumbled bacon. Will give you a review later.
5:40 pm on November 21st, 2013
My internet is having issues (again) so if I go offline, don’t worry. It may keep working and it may not.
5:42 pm on November 21st, 2013
BTW, another historic day on Wall Street. Dow closed at a new all time high!
5:45 pm on November 21st, 2013
Has anyone read any books by Kristin Hannah? We just finished one called Comfort & Joy, which was really good. Nice season of the year to read it. Firefly Lane is another we may get at the library.
5:50 pm on November 21st, 2013
Barb & Mag: Are you going to just keep looking at the historic days? Book youre North to Alaska flight NOW, Stay with Hobbit at the Hobbit Hotel or with the Old Fart and me at the Anchorage Grand. DO IT NO!W.
5:58 pm on November 21st, 2013
HOH, At this point Barb’s hesitation has nothing to do with finances, more to do with a few other issues. If she doesn’t make it to Alaska, she will jump an Amtrack and head east in the spring.
When she landed safely last Sunday she was overheard to say “I will never fly again”. Just so you know, she is a big chickens**t.
7:19 pm on November 21st, 2013

Dawson and Siber H: TY for the heads up on internet snafu. BSD: sooooooooo good to have your comments again.
We know Barb of B&M doesn’t fly well, but we want her to meet mom in AK in March. Mom’s B-day is that week and she isn’t sure she can get to MA for Melanie’s day. Please. Don’t make the herd beg.
8:21 pm on November 21st, 2013
Barb, mom hates flying with a passion, but we told her it is the only way to get to The Last Great Race. If she can do it (minus any finger or toe nails) , you can too.
Nothing upbeat to report here, so we are signing off. Have a good night, everyone. It is especially comforting to hear from BSD again.
8:28 pm on November 21st, 2013

Macy: Yay for your mom. She listened and went to the vet. Now we can stop worrying. Somehow we missed the start of this problem. Our problem may be we are reading every other word. Barb did mention she wasn’t feeling tip-top at the Texas Trio meetup, right? BooBear, your mom’s stamp is purrfect. Loved the photos of the Plunderer passports. More photos of the meeting with Rebecca to post but have to wait until we get home to our own computer.
There is so much catching up to do! Never fear…we can do it.
Riö: SDD checked. Tomorrow night the sax comes out. Let the good times roll. Heh.
