    Greetings!

Can’t wait for the Seattle meeting today! Hope there are lots of pictures.

Rebecca: Red Velvet Cake is one of my faves. Cheesecake Factory does make a Red Velvet Cheescake. Wonder if I can express mail one to Alaska. Please do go the doctor when you get home. Grizz and I are very worrit.

Belle Starr: I suggest you check the Pixie’s baggage when she returns home. There might be tons of sparkles in there.

    Yucky, cloudy day here.

Everyone, have a good day, and to those under the quilt sending good thoughts for speedy recoveries.

Ah, um, as Bernie would say. Fat? Who’s fat? Not moi, maybe just a little fluffy. Now, my roomie needs some serious work before heading north.

If the market doesn’t start heading north, Barb may not be able to do so. Wish those dorks in Washington would get over themselves so Wall Street would settle down, and all those federal employees would be able to get back to work.

Just heard that the spa and gym that Congress uses has NOT shut down, and in fact, some new equipment and upgrades were just installed. Gah!

I could use a housekeeper. The man here found a humongous computer table and brought it home. Unfortunately it did not fit where the old (but perfectly good) one did. We had to unload a 12 feet long times 5 feet high bookcase and move it over 5 or 6 inches to make the new desk fit. So now I have a huge desk, a really big monitor (I like), windows 8 (I don’t like) and books stacked everywhere.

At the risk of someone saying this is political, we are curious about how youse guys feel about Halloween. There are schools around here who no longer allow Halloween celebrations or parades during school hours. Mom says she LOVED those days of dressing up in school, and parading from classroom to classroom. She is feeling sad for the kids who are not allowed to do that any more.

  36. Siber-H
    3:47 pm on October 10th, 2013

Mom loved to dress up and go trick or treating…especially the trick or treating part. There is nowhere near the number of kids going door to door for goodies that there used to be.
I would like to go trick or treating. I would dress up as the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood. heh

  37. Herd of Hounds
    4:06 pm on October 10th, 2013

Mom loved to do the dress up and trick or treat but her folks always hid the c-a-n-d-y. (The first word she learned to spell) In 11 years in this house (the yellow brick abode) we have had a total of ZERO trick-or-treaters but 6 houses up the street the little buggers abound. Think it has something to do with houses on one side of the street only, a steep drive, a hidden porch with 15 steps, and a “trespawsers” will be eaten” sign.( Not to mention the scary Disney CD with screams and moans that mom plays at a gozillion decibles , which IS more than 2.) We of the HOH could do with a bit of respect that night. There isn’t enough room in the tub for all of us 🙁

SiberH: A few years ago Tenzing was Little Red Riding Wolf. My Two-legged made a costume that had a red cape and then hung a little dress she made from Tenzing’s collar. Halloween was a big deal when I was young because, of course, candy limited only by the speed with which we could run from house to house. I only remember one house that we skipped because the man who lived there was scary (in what way I don’t recall). In Montana, after we took the kids out the adults went out (in costume) and partied. Somewhere along the way razor blades were stuck into apples and candy was tampered with in some ways so community parties became popular and less children went from house to house.
Here, there is a community party for the young ones but we may get one or two children knocking on the door.
It is a pagan holiday so some religions are anti-Halloween.
Now that I am too old to collect candy, I would have no trouble if this holiday went the way of the dinosaurs.

I have been reading about the Salmonella outbreak in many states. It took me some research to find out that Alaska is one of those states. This is from NBC news:

    http://www.nbcnews.com/health/usda-threatens-shutter-foster-farms-plants-tied-salmonella-outbreak-8C11363370

“Investigations found that 80 percent of those who got sick consumed chicken at home the week before illness, compared with 65 percent of a healthy control group. At the same time, nearly 80 percent of those who provided information about the brand of chicken named Foster Farms or another brand likely produced by Foster Farms.

    States with reported illnesses include Alaska (2), Arkansas (1), Arizona (11), California (213), Colorado (4), Connecticut (1), Florida (1), Hawaii (1), Idaho (2), Michigan (2), North Carolina (1), Nevada (8), Oregon (8), Texas (5), Utah (2), Washington (15) and Wisconsin (1).

Raw chicken products from the three plants bear the following USDA inspection marks: P6137, P6137A, and P7632.”

It also said that it was an antibiotic resistant strain of Salmonella. It made me think of Snowbella. I hope she is feeling better today.

Dawson. I remember cruising the neighborhood for Pennies for Unicef. (I am older you know and couldn’t get away with the candy thing) But the people would almost always give me candy too… 😀

  52. Barb & Maggie
    5:47 pm on October 10th, 2013

We had just read abut a recall for Foster Farms. Might have been chicken nuggets, which are not consumed in this house. We have been getting chicken from Fresh Market or our local gal that raises her own birds organically. $3.00 a lb, but so what, more humanely raised and tastes better.

I know Halloween is pagan, but people get too poodled up over fun kid holidays. Santa is not really a religious figure either, but a big part of children’s joy at Christmas.

And how about them there Easter bunnies!

I always did a great Halloween display in the main display case at my school highlighting different aspects of Halloween and featuring books from the library. Year after year, each year different and creative. Then one year the principal asked me to take it down “due to parent complaints.” He would never tell me how many parents or what the complaint was. I always suspected it was just one parent (and the principal was also conservative). I asked teachers to look at the display and let me know if there was a problem or something that caused offence, and everyone thought it was fine. One said she thought a non-fiction book about the devil was the problem. I managed to delay for a week due to being very busy but then the principal reiterated that it had to come down. However, the school allowed costumes–no face masks–and even hosted a Halloween carnival each year. Go figure.

Why should a kid’s celebration day upset adults? Halloween is for children to be empowered once a year. A day to get goodies while threatening the big bad peoples. Really, a day to let the grumpy old farts down the block know that there are still kiddos in the world. Ain’t it grand!

    7:15 pm on October 10th, 2013

Halloween – ok, give me a minute to get up on my soapbox…grunt, huff, puff, creak…..

Many of us on this hear blog are of similar generation and fondly remember the days of carving pumpkins into grinning jack-o-lanterns, urgent discussions of the perfect costume, and plotting the route to ensure the best haul of candy.
They were days of scary stories about the old witch who lived in the tumble down house, or the grizzled and grumpy old guy who was rumored to chase children with a pitchfork. They were days when pillowcases did double duty as candy bags, and it was ok to eat the home packed bags of candy corn given by the neighbors.

Nowadays, there is so much concern about keeping children safe, that they are no longer allowed to be the children that we were. True, this is a different world, with new concerns. But with just a little parental involvement, children could still have the joy of being out long after the streetlights have come on, running house to house in the mysterious darkness. They could play out their fantasies of being superheroes or princesses or ninja turtles.
Imagination and play are a huge part of the process of growing up. Children who have not had the opportunity to be creative, to have imaginary friends, to just pretend, those children lack an aspect of childhood that has made me and all of my contemporaries who we are today.
We work so hard to protect children from danger; a local school has just sent a memo to all parents that the game of Tag will no longer be allowed on the playground because there have been skinned knees and elbows. But no matter how many things we take for granted as being a part of our childhood that we now forbid to the children of today, we cannot shield them from every danger that might cross their path. And we may be hindering them with our restrictions. There is great concern about childhood obesity, yet schools have dropped physical education, and now even restrict the pure joy of running and playing Tag. There is concern about children spending too much time with TV, Xbox and video games, but creative outlets found in the form of art and music classes is disappearing from the American educational landscape.
There will be people who decry Halloween celebrations for their pagan background. Those people fear anything that is outside their narrow field of acceptable joyous occasions.
Maybe there should be a shift from handing out candy and sugar in huge quantities to something more healthy. Maybe some other type of token could be given to the little ghosts and goulies that show up on your doorstep.
But lets not take away one of the things that made our childhood so memorable. Lets not say that just because we had ours, we don’t care if they get theirs. Maybe, if we start to encourage children to imagine, to pretend, and to run and play and climb trees and build forts like we did, maybe we will have an upcoming generation that is less rigid and more creative when they are the ones in charge of the future.

Ok – had my say. Now I have to figure out how to get down off this dang soap box without falling on my face.

Thank you all for answering. We heartily agree, especially with Tupper’s mom. Halloween has always been Mom’s very favorite holiday, even more than Christmas. We don’t get any trick or treaters all the way back on this farm, but if we go stand on Main St, the one and only street in our nearby village, all the trick or treaters come to us. That’s what everyone does around here. But these schools and those uptight parents are killing the joys of childhood.
We also think that there are way too many organized activities for kids nowadays, which takes away from their imaginations and creativity. And parents all seem to be helicopters who rearrange their entire existence around those organized activities. Just our 2 cents.

Rip: I have to ask someone in the neighborhood about tricker treaters as I never had any in North Pole. I enjoy the little ones, the littler the better. I think teens should do their own parties and not go door to door especially if they make no effort to be in costume and especially if they don’t even live in the neighborhood and are just aiming at getting a year’s supply of candy. I am old enough to remember homemade candies and treats. Yum!

Wose: Belle Starr was very special and Luna was wonderful. Luna snagged one of Sadie’s toys (a froggie that croaked) and I meant to let her take it home but I forgot. It is one that Sadie doesn’t play with. Oh we’ll, I’ll take it with me when I return the visit.

My house was a move-in mess but AJ did a couple of “tall person” jobs for me. I have a living room with cathedral ceilings and two of the spotlights needed changing. I couldn’t find the right spotlights so I had AJ change all of them out to LEDs which the electrical store says won’t need changing for 22 years! We will see. Since even standing on the top of a ladder doesn’t get me anywhere close to the spotlights, I needed something that won’t burn out and need changing. I told AJ that I would call him in 22 years to change the bulbs again.

What a wonderful afternoon spent with a wonderful person. Neither Nana or I are feeling well so we huddled under the quilt and ate clam chowdah and drank hot chocolate. Is Nana beautiful inside and out?—Does a certain pug linger in every room?

CHH: Is AJ still handsome? It has been a long time since I’ve seen him in person. I’ll sign him up in for the tall person task in 22 years. My guess is that he’ll still be tall.

Rio: I don’t hate Halloween, Easter, Christmas, and all the holidays. I just believe that they are all about selling us junk. Things have changed from the days when homemade goodies and decorations were made and children ran free without fear except from that one big kid who would grab your bag of candy and run.

Mom used to make popcorn balls or caramel apples and give them away. She loved Halloween and all the little kiddies. I do love seeing little ones in costumes but I haven’t seen that here in years. Everyone goes to the haunted house at the Rec Centre. I think they probably have as much fun as we did, although I’ve never attended.
It’s too bad when one or two parents can shut down the fun for many others.
Also, I must say that bats are my friends and this is their holiday so it isn’t all bad.
