Faint Memories
Colonel Bob’s on speaker. Hey! That reminds me of something. Not just all the fun we had – those pilots sure know how to have fun: is that in Thereby Hangs A Tail? But something else, something about …
“Just wondering how we’re doing, Bernie?” he says.
Bernie rubs his chin. He hasn’t shaved in a day or two, so his hand makes a rasping sound. I like that sound but prefer when Bernie shaves. Never liked beards, and besides we have to look professional in this business. We’re partners in the Little Detective Agency, me and Bernie. I do my best to look professional. Janie’s my groomer, the best groomer in the whole Valley. She has a great business with a great business plan: Janie’s Pet Grooming Service – We Pick Up and Deliver.
“I’m talking about Astrid,” Colonel Bob says.
“Yeah,” says Bernie. “Maybe we should meet.”
“Dry Gulch?” says Colonel Bob. “In an hour?”
“Okay.” Bernie hangs up and turns to me. “Where’s that damn flow chart?”
Flow chart? A faint memory rises in my mind, kind of like that fish I once saw in the canal. We have a canal here in the Valley – have I mentioned that already? And then, just like that fish, the faint memory sinks back down, out of sight. I don’t let it bother me.

Oh…I'm laughing so hard. If you really need the updated flow chart, it's on the August 19 post…10:05 PM comment by Kirby.
(I thought you were on your way to LA Bernie. Did you and Chet already go there? And this is the first I've heard about the canal…in the desert? Geography is not my subject.)
5:20 am on October 7th, 2010
Pondering. I'd say that Bernie went to LA and found Astrid shacking up with Foster but….He would have told Col. Bob immediately. And why does he need the flow chart if he found them? Ane he hasn't shaved in two days….Pondering.
5:27 am on October 7th, 2010
I'm with you b.Stover!!!! "Where's that damn flow chart?" indeed!
5:33 am on October 7th, 2010
I have the flow chart!

Way to go Mollypop. That should help Bernie. Glad they are back on track with Astrid. I don't think we have heard about the canal before, have we?
5:44 am on October 7th, 2010
Thanks Mollypop. That is the third and I think final version (August 20).
5:52 am on October 7th, 2010
Just LOVE to hear Chet's thoughts…even the ones that fade away.
Thanks for the flowchart. It's been awhile and we kats really need the review. Kirby T did an awesome job on it.
Hope Rio's friend's grandma is better this morning.
Mollypop

That was supposed to say Thanks, Mollypop, etc….
iPhone fingers strike again.
5:55 am on October 7th, 2010
I had an older version saved so I'm glad to see the newest one. However, we now know that Ratko is dead, and that's not on this flowchart. Bernie will know that though.
6:00 am on October 7th, 2010
Things to add to the flow chart:
Aug. 26 post: We know the housing development is Cactus Heights
Aug. 31: Ratko's body found
Sept. 2: Lt. Stine there investigating Ratko murder
Sept. 8: Still there
Sept. 10: Still there
Sept. 15: Chet and Bernie drive away from Cactus Heights and head for LA
This is fun except I'm not getting any work done.
6:02 am on October 7th, 2010
Way to go MollyPop! Wow, it was Kirby's flow chart wasn't it? Or am I wrong?
UPDATE of Dan: HE WANTS OUT OF THE HOSPITAL!!
And, for once, we agree. They LOST his liquids, gave him diarrhea and last night there was a FIRE on his ward. A FIRE!! The staff exited and slammed closed the patients's doors . . . Dan could hear everything, including the silence and then the firemen and then the all clear.
Love a duck! Needless to say we're a bit peeved. The hospital said they were moving Dan out today back to Rehab. We have called the Rehab place to make sure that the hospital is telling the truth. Rehab is getting back to us.
In this time of "interesting" happenings, I wonder if my OTAS's F has it right in saying we need a HUGE gong and ring it. Perhaps it would bring this strange world into some kind of alignment.
6:08 am on October 7th, 2010
Melanie: I'm glad you like Lie To Me. One of the best films that Tim Roth was in is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Gary Oldman (another excellent British actor) and Richard Dreyfuss are also in it. It's based on Tom Stoppard's play of the same name; Stoppard wrote the screenplay.
And get Dan out of the blasted hospital!
6:13 am on October 7th, 2010
Melanie – It's Kirby's excellent flow chart. I saved it because I have to study and study these things. I'm not good at the literary things, but Flowcharts 'R Us for sure.
Poodle prayers for Dan and for Rio's Grandma.
6:23 am on October 7th, 2010
Melanie, primum non nocere is a Latin phrase that means "First, do no harm". It is taught in medical school and sort of is part of the Hippocratic Oath. Doctors seem to forget this.
Rio, how is Grandma today?
7:21 am on October 7th, 2010
I suppose I wouldn't blame it just on the doctors as a whole bunch of other people work there. Gosh, I wonder if that's the drill in the hospitals around here – slam the patient doors and get out in case of a fire? Egad, as FK would say.
Bang the Gong.
7:33 am on October 7th, 2010
Yikes! I had not been following Astrid very closely. I say "hat tip" to anyone who can keep this straight.
G & BB, please ask your mom for mine if there is anyway to get the iphone pictures from the phone to the blog.
The door closing thing is actually pretty standard until the particulars of the fire are known. If it is a false alarm (as it frequently is here) it is better not to disturb the patients and the doors serve as a temporary fire break. Then, if it is determined to be a real fire, patients are moved determined by where the fire is and their status. You do not want to move a seriously injured or sick person unless you have to.
Not defending YOUR hospital or anything, but dad is with the fire department and our Angie is with the hospital here.
7:34 am on October 7th, 2010
If hospitals waited on the doctors to decide anything, it would be a long wait.
7:55 am on October 7th, 2010
Grandma!… We went to see Grandma this morning….sigh….She looks pretty weak, but she was able to eat some breakfast….sniffle…They managed to get her heart rate down around 160ish. It skyrocketed last night and we feared the worst….snort!…But she is tough and pulled through once again….whew!…We met her mother as we were leaving the nursing home outside on the sidewalk and they both started crying….grunt!….I don’t know why, Grandma is still with us, no use in that crying thing…snuffle!
7:59 am on October 7th, 2010
Jasper's mom here. Yes it is the "norm" in a hospital to close all doors immediately when the alarm is sounded, regardless of the location of the fire. Idea is to keep the fire/smoke from spreading. Patients are not moved immediately upon the sounding of the alarm.
8:04 am on October 7th, 2010
Prayers!…My friend wants me to thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers….sniff!…It means a lot to her….grunt!…And me. I love Grandma too!….snuffle!
Astrid!….So she may Not be Toast yet!…gruff!…Although Bernie seems a bit lost….hmmm.
8:10 am on October 7th, 2010
Riö, The Pack is with you and your grandmother . .
8:18 am on October 7th, 2010
Grandmother, daughter, granddaughter, and great grandpug – it is nice to see intergenerational families.
8:23 am on October 7th, 2010
Rio: Please let your friend know that I am thinking of her and tell her to keep plundering on.
8:26 am on October 7th, 2010
Heh!…My friend has perfected the Art of Plundering On….snort!
8:49 am on October 7th, 2010
Astrid!…. Bernie needs to tell Col Bob something in person….grunt!…I wonder how long that “one hour” is going to be in our time line….snort!……I bet this will wrap up the case of the missing Astrid.
9:10 am on October 7th, 2010
Spence's years are even longer than dog years.
9:16 am on October 7th, 2010
Rio, glad Grandma is a little better. She is an honorary plunderer.
Melanie, sounds like the hospital handled the fire alarm correctly. Too bad they didn't communicate better with the patients. Of course, they still lost Dan's lab stuff so better hustle back to rehab.
MacyMP, Lordy mom is so stupid with the phone, we wouldn't trust her to tell your mom anything. But you can send the picture to an email address so maybe send the pics to ur home computer and save. Then she could add the pics with her comments. Also, our charger cord can convert to plug into the computer. Maybe you can download them somehow.
9:23 am on October 7th, 2010
Aging…I found this great quote….snort!
Old age is no place for sissies.
Bette Davis
9:55 am on October 7th, 2010
It seems to me that if Bernie had found out anything about Astrid he would have told Col. Bob immediately. Instead he's been doing something else and not shaving for two days. Of course, another problem we have is that Bernie and Spence became combined in the comment, "Where's that damn flow chart?" which is so funny.
9:56 am on October 7th, 2010
I haven't received TFAT from Poison Pen yet. I think I'm getting concerned.
10:08 am on October 7th, 2010
Rio, we thought you meant that you met your grandma's mother coming in. We were impressed! Nonetheless, min-pin prayers continue.
G and BB, I think plugging in to the computer may be the way to go.
10:14 am on October 7th, 2010
C. Harris: If Siber H. hears about the snow up where you are, he will extend his vacation and keep on heading North.
Rio: Prayers for Grandma. Bette Davis calls it like she sees it.
By the way, there was a no-hitter pitched last night.
Melanie: Hope Rehab has a place for Dan. Has the fluid stopped collecting in his lungs?
10:36 am on October 7th, 2010
We have been trying to post all day with no luck. This is a test.
10:39 am on October 7th, 2010
Yea!
We will strike while the iron is hot(Oh no, Chet, not the iron!)
Hope Grandma is feeling better, and hope Dan gets over to rehab soon.
Bee, I got my book yesterday. It cam by regular mail.
10:48 am on October 7th, 2010
B&M: If I don't get it by Saturday, I'll send an email to PP. Why couldn't you get on earlier?
10:52 am on October 7th, 2010
We are having a computer bug of some kind here. It's not the web site.
10:57 am on October 7th, 2010
Last week the kats were talking about fluffy bleached tails. Mine is that way, too. Here is a good shot of my tail, and also I have my head swiveled almost all the way around, like Chet likes to do.
Human necks are like human ears and noses, almost worthless!

11:15 am on October 7th, 2010
Wow Maggie, that is one impressive tail. Mine is more of a minimalist job.
11:20 am on October 7th, 2010
A couple of weeks ago Rio said he wanted a picture of me with one of my "finds" from the chicken coop. I talked Barb into snapping some shots, so do you still want us to post one or 2? They really aren't too gross or anything.
11:25 am on October 7th, 2010
Unbelievable!…The Rangers are whipping the Rays big time again!…grunt!
The hardest thing to believe about “The Fan” is not that Robert De Niro is stalking somebody again but that anyone cares that much about a baseball player.
Bernie Lincicome
11:31 am on October 7th, 2010
MagPie!…I think the consensus was that no one wanted to see a dead rat…snort!….Except for me, Rio….grunt!
11:38 am on October 7th, 2010
I look kinda cute in the pictures! So is it yes or no, Rio, you decide.
11:40 am on October 7th, 2010
Maggie is beautiful. I don't mind seeing a picture of a rat.
Rio: Is that a quotation regarding The Fan? Who is Bernie Lincicome?
11:40 am on October 7th, 2010
Ok!…I vote post the photo of Dead Ratko!…heh!
11:45 am on October 7th, 2010
Maggie, great tail, and I know one when I see one.
We got our books today from the Houston signing on the 3rd. So cool!
Rio, I am glad Grandma is getting some food today. That is important. We are keeping her in our thoughts.
Melanie, We are thinking about Dan too.
BStover, I saw a combine cloud today on the way to Fargo. When it turned around and came out of the cloud it was red, (I think Allis Chalmers) not green. (John Deere)
11:45 am on October 7th, 2010
OK, Here is the first one. This was from the other day. Don't remember what number it was, more than two.

12:09 pm on October 7th, 2010
MagPie!… That’s a great photo – I like the way Ratko is lying on his back with his little paws up in the air!…snort!
12:12 pm on October 7th, 2010
Is that real or a stunt rat? lol very nice job, Maggie.
12:13 pm on October 7th, 2010
I don't know about looking cute, so much as steely-eyed.
12:23 pm on October 7th, 2010
Stover!…Yes!…snort!…Bernie is a Sports Writer….sniff!
12:46 pm on October 7th, 2010
Macy, Barb says she always think of Chet when I wag my tail and make a breeze start up behind me. You maybe make a smaller breeze.
12:47 pm on October 7th, 2010
Bee, Did you get today's mail delivery?
1:01 pm on October 7th, 2010
B&M: Yes, today's mail already came.
Alice: Another image for The Poem.
1:22 pm on October 7th, 2010
Barb, more like a Texas summer breeze, nearly non existent!
1:30 pm on October 7th, 2010
Good thoughts to Dan and Grandma. I love the Bette Davis quote.
B.Stover: I have not received my book from Poisoned Pen yet either. I thought it would be here by now. Giants game tonight.
1:45 pm on October 7th, 2010
Yes! The Giants play tonight!! And Dad is up in San Francisco
waiting for the game to start!! He was twirling and twirling!
I'm glad that Dan is better. And I hope Rio's friends grandma keeps improving. BP of 160 is still a little high, isn't it?
I hope my book from the Poisoned Pen comes today! Can't wait!
1:50 pm on October 7th, 2010
Did anyone suggest "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein? A friend just loaned Barb the book today, and it seems like that might have been one that someone mentioned last week.
Macy, I like that Texas summer breeze.
2:06 pm on October 7th, 2010
Barb and Maggie: I cried lots when I read, "Racing in the Rain", and yet, it was a very good book.
A quote from the book I'm reading now, "Shattered", by Dick Francis: "…sleep, which practically never knitted up any ravelled sleave of care, had made things slightly worse." Hey! I know where that reference is from.
2:08 pm on October 7th, 2010
PlayOffs!…. The Yankees and the Twins are tied at the bottom of the fourth!…snorr!…I wonder if Molly and Alice are aware that their teams are already playing…heh!heh!
2:10 pm on October 7th, 2010
Giants!…What time do the Giants play?….grunt!… We may be switching back and forth for awhile…snort!
2:24 pm on October 7th, 2010
Dawson: I love that book "Shattered". Got it around somewhere, but I'll take your word on the quote.
MagPie: Wonderful work! And you are so beautiful and that Rat is so dead.
Thanks all for the good thoughts. Dan is not in Rehab YET! Mostly what he was upset about in the fire episode was they said nothing after the episode even though most of the patients heard the whole thing.
They wouldn't let him loose today, they lost another lab. They did move his room to another floor. But the room doesn't have lights, though it does have a TV. Also they haven't fed him dinner yet.
2:33 pm on October 7th, 2010
Melanie!…Exactly which hospital is this?….gasp!
2:36 pm on October 7th, 2010
MagPie! You will cry in the middle of Racing in the Rain, but like Mom, you will be so happy at the end. It's become one of Mom's all-time favorites.
2:42 pm on October 7th, 2010
Rio: Here from 9:30 PM to 1 AM Atlanta at San Francisco is on for Game 1 of the NL Division on TBS. (Sounds like I know what I'm writing but I'm copying from the tv listings.)
2:42 pm on October 7th, 2010
Melanie: The quote is from the 2nd paragraph of Chapter Four. The man has woke up the morning after being beat up.
They lost more lab results!! No lights! No dinner! (It's just possible that no dinner is a blessing.) Good grief.
2:43 pm on October 7th, 2010
Okay, now he is eating. He still has no lights and no phone. He can call out on his cell, but we can't get in touch with him. So I called the nurse's station and complained about the phone and the electricity. I was not pleasant.
2:44 pm on October 7th, 2010
I read Shattered but not sure which one it is…if you know what I mean.
2:45 pm on October 7th, 2010
Melanie, That series of events is awful! Hope all the patients don't have those problems. Better days ahead!
2:54 pm on October 7th, 2010
Dan!…Maybe the Fire at the Hospital has caused all these problems….geeze!!
Twins!…Speaking of FIRE! The Twins are at it again tonight! Lets hope they can keep it up till the end this time!…Wow!…Where’s Alice? No baking tonight Alice! …sniff!…Your shortbread was not that lucky last night!…heh!
2:56 pm on October 7th, 2010
MagPie! I am in awe of you. That ratty thing is huge!
3:00 pm on October 7th, 2010
Shattered: The protagonist is a glass blower who is given a video tape from his friend, a jockey killed in a fall during a horse race. The video is subsequently stolen before the glass blower even watches it and he starts getting visits and beatings from those who think he knows where the video is.
Go Twins. It is tied up again at the top of the 7th.
3:02 pm on October 7th, 2010
Damn Yankees! Not tied anymore.
3:05 pm on October 7th, 2010
Hey everybody! I just caught up for the day. Wow — lots going on.
Rio: I'm glad your friend's grandmother is doing better. Mom's grandma is 96, and she just went to live in a nursing home, but she fought them all the way. She's always been pretty ornry — she says so herself!
Melanie: Sorry for all the problems at the hospital, but I'm glad Dan's feeling better. It sounds like he's another ornry one!
Maggie: Wow-whee!!! That's one dead rat!!!
Bee: I need to go eat supper now, but since you so thoughtfully catalogued the changes that need to be made in the flowchart, I might give it another try when I get back!
3:11 pm on October 7th, 2010
Oh NO!…The Yankees are up 4 – 2! Did the Manager of the Twins get tossed out of the game???….snort!…. Her mother called and we had the sound turned off but I thought I saw him getting tossed out?…. Grunt!
3:14 pm on October 7th, 2010
Sam and Kirby, Thank you. Sammy, you are much bigger than that rat. You could have taken him down!
3:15 pm on October 7th, 2010
MollyPop: Grace used to have a fluffy tail. Her tail now looks like lab's tail. Poor thing. Not even Wonderfluff or whatever Alice's uses could help. Soon it will grown out.
3:18 pm on October 7th, 2010
B and M — The Art of Racing in the Rain was a abig hit in our household too. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you will have a much greater appreciation for the joy of life when it is done. There is also a great promo video for the book that I am sure you easily find on You Tube. Enjoy. Wookie
3:29 pm on October 7th, 2010
Rio: Yes, the manager was tossed for arguing balls and strikes with the blind umpire.
3:34 pm on October 7th, 2010
Guys, I have to trust you to do right by me with the Yankees. (Ha!) I can't get the game tonight.
3:43 pm on October 7th, 2010
Dawson: Thank you for the summary. I'm beginning to remember it.
Kirby: An update would be great if you feel like doing one.
3:45 pm on October 7th, 2010
Molly!…Your Yankees are winning the game with the help of the Umpires…heh!…It is 4 – 2 top of the 9th!…grunt!
3:48 pm on October 7th, 2010
Wookie!…An Agent of few words and many actions…snort! heh!….Wookie, when are you leaving on your whirlwind Vermont vacation?….sneeze!
3:50 pm on October 7th, 2010
Well, I fought the hospital
and it came to a draw.
I am zonked out, I wish I could stay up and read the game, but tomorrow comes early.
The Pack and I are doing a flow chart for Dan's escape from the hospital!
Kirby: You are doing great up above!
4:02 pm on October 7th, 2010
Alice!…Where are you tonight?….snort!….Those damned Yankees are starting to kick your fluffy tail!…grunt!
4:06 pm on October 7th, 2010
To B. Stover: If your book doesn't come tomorrow, please email Spence at spence.quinn@gmail.com.
4:16 pm on October 7th, 2010
Wow, Spence and and Chet really watch out for us! Good to have them on our side!
4:33 pm on October 7th, 2010
Tisk! Tisk! Tisk!… Still No Avatar!…..grump!
4:38 pm on October 7th, 2010
Gads!…You can lead a great PI Dog to an Avatar website, but you cannot make him sign on…heh!
http://www.gravatar.com – All you need is an email address and a photo pal!…Do it!
4:40 pm on October 7th, 2010
Spence and Chet: Thank you. I will.
4:55 pm on October 7th, 2010
Stover!…Have you seen the latest Rubicon episode? (you special lady, you!)…heh!…Chet is always looking out for you….snorkel! …I just want to kick him in the butt for not having an Avatar yet!…snort!… We are still watching Rubicon, so no spoilers please…sniff!
5:10 pm on October 7th, 2010
Just got back from the monthly quilt club meeting and I guess I am happy to have missed this game. (sob sob sob) Also I am glad to have missed the whining and complaining by Mr Staff. He was W. and C. this afternoon even before the game.
So now we have to go to NY and try to win 3 straight. I think I will buy bookworm and spend the next week playing that instead.
Melanie,
Two words of advice. Patient Advocate. All hospitals have them. Request to talk to one. Make sure the nurses and doctors know you are doing this (ask them for the number/name). Believe me it helped me immensely. You may have already talked to yours today, but if not, please do so.
5:13 pm on October 7th, 2010
I don't want Bernie to meet Col. Bob in Dry Gulch. Why would he go there? Why not someplace with other people around? Why not Max's Memphis Ribs? Why not Uncle Rio's?
Abbie is worried.
5:16 pm on October 7th, 2010
Rio: Yes I saw the last episode. It's very good. Tell me what you think after you've seen it.
5:22 pm on October 7th, 2010
Rio. We head out tomorrow morning. Really looking forward to it. Wookie
5:27 pm on October 7th, 2010
You guys, help me, I'm trying to keep up with all that is going on, but who knows, it's hopeless. Mom wants to go to bed again.
5:28 pm on October 7th, 2010
Mom's book hasn't come in yet either. Grrrr…..
I think I forgot where or what Dry Gulch is. Sounds like a good name for a bar but I think it's something else. Pondering….
This post has somewhat of an onimous tone to it, me thinks.
Me also thinks that Chet needs an avatar! Whoo hoo, wouldn't that be fun to see what Admin comes up with?
5:33 pm on October 7th, 2010
Abbie, Dry Gulch is the Dry Gulch Steak House and Salon. It is safe. You are having a brain cramp.
5:33 pm on October 7th, 2010
Abbie: Dry Gulch is a Steak House and Saloon. There's a patio out back where they eat. Chet loves the wooden cowboy out front.
5:41 pm on October 7th, 2010
AbbieTheKat!…Get a grip! Bernie and Chet always go to the Dry Gulch Saloon…geeze!…Bernie will bring Col Bob up to speed and the case will be over and out we think….heh!…You must think something else is going to happen between Col Bob and Bernie, is that why you are worried???…grunt!
Wookie!…Please have a safe trip and send postcards to the blog if you can!…grunt!…I know I will miss you a lot!…snuffle!
Stover!…Rubicon! Wow!…snort!…I now think I don’t trust anyone except the guy I have not trusted all along…Kale….He has turned out to be maybe, a big help…gasp!….The analyst in the suit will be manipulated very easily me thinks…grrrrrr!
Wolfie!…Admin has had a very long time to come up with an Avatar. But it apparently is not on his important “To Do” list by any means…snort!
Wolfie!…We are going to watch some of the Giants vs Braves game now…heh!…Until someone says we have to go to bed…drat!
5:41 pm on October 7th, 2010
Wow, Alice, your vet must be really expensive!
5:44 pm on October 7th, 2010
You guys are right. I was thinking Dry Gulch was the name of the empty housing development. I better go look at the flow chart again.
I am going to take a few pills and watch the ball game too. No computer this time so good night all.
Sleep tight.
>^..^<
5:45 pm on October 7th, 2010
Macy, Staff had me write that about the patient advocate.
(heh heh heh)
5:48 pm on October 7th, 2010
What is it they say about great minds? Good night, all.
5:54 pm on October 7th, 2010

Rubicon–Yes, I like Kale. I think that the boss (the one who eats corn flakes) is going to crumble. He's out of control. The analyst in the suit may have more guts then we think.

Rio: Grant (the analyst in the suit) was ambitious and jealous of Will at the beginning but I think he's changing. (He helps Tanya when she's on probation sorting those piles of paper. He wouldn't have done that earlier.) I think he respects Will now.

OK guys, sorry I didn't get back to you last night, but Mom zoned out pretty early and I couldn't get back on the computer. Anyway, here's the revised — and I hope final — version of the flowchart. (Paws crossed — you know I always have trouble with this thing!)

OK, I can't get this thing to work — my boy says he's been having problems too, so maybe it's not me, maybe it's our dumb system. Oh, well. Maybe you can all print out the old one, then just take a pencil and update it!
