Facts On The Ground (But Not Yet Under)
“What happens if some newcomer arrives today?” Admin says. “They’d be lost. Maybe we should go back to tin futures – we’ve hardly scratched the surface, as it were.”
“You’re probably right,” Spence says. “But there have been some summaries of the case in the down-below section – what if we posted a couple of them?”
“And then went back to tin futures?”
“Can’t see any reason why not.”
The Case:
From Melanie:
Back January 8th we had our first clue from Chet. “Colonel Bob and Bernie had a long talk, something about Colonel Bob’s son, Ray. Is Ray in trouble? Are we on a case?”
Then nothing that mentions CB and his son until February 26th. Chet was going to actually tell us something, but it got complicated and there was an argument between the 3 two legged people.
On March 12th, Chet wants to “get back to work on Colonel Bob’s son’s case.” He doesn’t want to sniff for bedbugs.
March 17th, Bernie wants to go to Alaska but “If we weren’t so caught up in the Jason thing, we could make a quick trip up there. Alaska sounds good.’ the Jason thing, so hard to keep all the details straight. For starters, he’s Colonel Bob’s son. Ray’s his first name. The Jason part comes from this woman we’re also looking for.”
Then on March 24th Chet wrote: Funny thing – the whole Colonel Bob case, Ray Jason, Astrid Jason, all that, is suddenly clear in my mind. I was going to post about that today, get everything straight, but Bernie says there’s too much digital wackiness going on, and if Bernie says so, then that’s that. Anyway, we’re headed for Vegas, on a hunch, Bernie says. That’s a little worrisome – last time we went to Vegas on a hunch, well, never mind.
From B. Stover:
As far as I can determine, this is what we know, and all that we know:
1. Col. Bob met his son, Ray Jason, after Ray followed him in his car. This was in Bakersfield. Col. Bob gave Ray $300 from his ATM. We don’t know what either said to the other except that Ray hates Col. Bob.
2. Astrid is missing and according to Bernie, Ray is also missing.
3. For some reason (a “hunch”?) Bernie thought that he could get info on Astrid from Albie Rose in Vegas and he goes there and questions Albie. Albie wants to hire Bernie, who will have none of that. Albie was married to Tiffany who changed her name from Ethel which was an alias for Astrid. Foster first saw her at a show as Ethel the Ready. Albie is very jealous, asks why Foster knew Tiffany 3 was really Ethel. Albie was married eight times.
4. Foster, dressed in all black, comes to Bernie’s house. He wants to sell Bernie information about Astrid; he knows nothing about Ray. He does not want to work for Albie any longer and has a new gig in LA. He says that Astrid/Tiffany 3 liked Albie and that Albie was wrong about the other dude.
5. Bernie and Chet are meeting with Foster in an unfinished housing development somewhere, I think, in the desert near Vegas. The housing development for some reason has windowless houses. Foster trusts Bernie and I think Bernie feels sorry for Foster.
6. Bernie has not told Foster or Albie who his client is. He has given Foster $1.000 and we will apparently learn next what Foster knows, probably a very tenuous assumption.

Two two-legged people this time. All I have to say to them is, we'd better not go back to tin futures.
I'm still laughing.

Congrats to B. and Melanie! Good work, maybe you two should go into a PI business.

And when you go into the PI business, you will surely need a dog. That could be me!!!!

Kudos to Bee and Melanie. Job well done, guys! We got throught last night's storm relatively unscathed, however the road in front of our house got partially washed away, due to the flash flooding. Looks like a big sink hole. Bee, we finished End of Story last night – looks like Ivy had some major writer's block there at the end! Now that we have finished, please feel free to make your comments.
6:30 am on May 27th, 2010
POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT FOR END OF STORY AND BULLET POINT:
Barb and Maggie: I'm glad you're unscathed, except for the sink hole. I just wondered what you thought about the end of End of Story, which has an interesting title also. I kept wanting to say to Ivy, "No, it's not a good idea." I knew Harrow (I think that's his name) was a bad dude, but I was surprised about Sonny in Bullet Point.

I LOVE LAUGHING OUT LOUD! Those 2 legged ones are pretty funny!
I am so proud of B. Stover and (cough cough) the other person mentioned in the post. (sniff)
To the Kat's staff . . .
I watch Rachel Maddow in the morning, in a little little box on the computer screen when I'm working. I was reading your post from yesterday about Rachel Maddow and the 1979 blow out (I must take breaks from work) when Rachel started talking about the 1979 blow out. WEIRD!
By the way, The Newf Pack and the human contingent, know Rachel. She's exactly like she is on TV!
6:35 am on May 27th, 2010
MagPie! Missed the sink hooe. Glad you're okay. Hope Riö made it okay.
We had a whopper of a lightening storm, but nothing was hit.
6:39 am on May 27th, 2010
Who's on first?
6:50 am on May 27th, 2010
For any newcomers: The houses are not windowless; apparently the windows are boarded up. The unfinished housing development is not in the desert but is in the valley. (For further geographical information you need to check with Siber Huskie or Wolfie Wigglebutt.) We don't know why Foster wanted Bernie to leave the development first. We also don't know what the scent is that Chet has been smelling periodically but we are hoping that Bernie stays to investigate and lets Chet sniff around.
6:53 am on May 27th, 2010
Melanie – Mom and I watched the Rachel Maddow stuff this morning too. She pointed out how nothing has changed in oil production safety since sometime in the 1970's.
So I get to repeat myself about Pogo Possum. This time it's not the quest for The Big Rock Candy Mountain, it's just his famous quote, "I have met the enemy and he is us."
7:02 am on May 27th, 2010
Breaking News,
According to the coast guard the leak is stopped. They have been able to get mud down into the well. It is not capped yet. That remains to be done and could still fail.
I hope it works. I hope it works. I hope it works.
Cool, the newf's know Rachel! Wow! only 4 degree's of separation.
Me to Alice to Newfs to Rachel.
>^..^<
7:32 am on May 27th, 2010
So the CG now says the leak is stopped. That's good, I wasn't believing any thing BP was putting out. Still have to plug it up.
The Pack and I still believe that there is over a month's worth of gushed oil fouling our waters because BP wanted to save the well and not plug it.
7:33 am on May 27th, 2010
Alice's Staff: Much better than 6 degrees of separation!
7:33 am on May 27th, 2010
We are holding our collective breaths that the "damn hole" stays plugged. Our hearts ache for the poor creatures, as well as the humans involved. SPOILER ALERT back to B. Stover. I, too, was thinking that Harrow was a bad dude, but the very ending was still a surprise. Actually had to re-read the ending several times before it sunk in. Guess the name of the book should have given me a clue. Always wonder why many woman are so drawn to guys "on the inside". Danny would have been a better bet, don't ya think?
7:59 am on May 27th, 2010
After Alice got free two days in a row she now thinks she should be outside whenever she wishes. (It is always harder to put the genie back in the bottle)
Anyway this is her at the door, begging for release. I feel a song coming on…

Please release me, let me gooooooooo….
She has tried the eyes on me…Thank goodness I am immune.

Alice's eyes are there. She is so beautiful. However, we should somehow alert Rio, who must be at his friend's mother's house without internet access.
Barb and Maggie: SPOILER ALERT: Anyone would have been better than Harrow I suppose. Why didn't she see through him sooner? I wasn't that impressed with Danny however. I liked Bruce, her boss, not as a love interest but I think he has potential as a character…in the novel and also as an eccentric.
8:38 am on May 27th, 2010
Further for newcomers: Foster told Bernie that Astrid is in Pine City dancing at Club Utopia.
By the way, "utopia" literally means "no place." And today's title is interesting.
9:01 am on May 27th, 2010
Oh yes, Bee.
So you think that P.A. is trying to give us a clue with that title? I just glossed over it without a thought.
I will take it to mean that no one is dead yet. HA!

Our neighbor's rain gauge showed that we got about 5" of rain last night, in 2 1/2 -3 hours. No wonder the road washed away. Melanie, we think you have a good point about BP not wanting to plug the well, so they could still have access to the oil. Greed, pure and simple. Bee, I wan't terribly impressed with Danny either, but he really seemed to care about Ivy and treated her well. So he would have been my choice over Harrow. We will be starting Lights Out next – hope this won't make 3 bad guys in a row.

Home!..At last!…snort!… I made a nuisance of myself so badly that her mom drove me home…. Heh!….Her mom said the weather is calm so I can whine, cry, beg, pout and fart all by myself in my own house… snorkel!… Woooo!… Just in time for the Rockies too!…gruff!

Alice!… Please don’t ever let Alice out of that house again!…. scary!… She has that insane look about her, like she is possessed…. Snort!… I bet she just wants to get to her spaceship so she can reach her command post with information about all of us… yikes!.

Good work Melanie and Stover! All of us down below already knew that we can depend on the two of you to help us remember everything about the story. Spence just got wise to this.
I'm glad it got warmer for you Dawson. I have just accepted my fate that summer is here and will be for a long time. I don't get what you humans love about summer.
You guys should take Alice out. She seems to love the great outdoors just like I do. I'd go nuts if I had to stay in the house all the time. I go out even in the summer.
The headline on my home page says that the gulf oil gusher is now bigger than the Exxon Valdez.
Rio, I miss you!

Melanie and Queen Bee – Congratulations!! I love the way you think so logically! You should get an early, signed copy of You Know What for your detective work par excellance! This is good, because I think gives us validation of what we know versus what we THINK we know.
I just don't remember any new folks by the name of Newcomer. Do any of you? Last week we had Nan and Mollie, but nobody named Newcomer. Unless I'm missing something?
Oh well. gtg

Sorry I missed all the action yesterday, but it was another big quilt day here in Chevy Chase, this time a quilting bee (or more appropriately a boutique bee, where ladies in my mom's quilt guild get together at our place to make items to be sold at the boutique at the guild's quilt show in December). Lots for me to do, meet and greet, supervise the assembly of the items (this time cloth tote bags and cloth zipper bags, good for holding treats), and before hand helping my mom assemble all the kits for the items. Hard work, but definitely for a good cause.
Speaking of hard work, great job, Stover and Melanie. Although, I am confused from some of yesterday's comments. If Foster wanted to draw Bernie and Chet to the abandoned development, why then did he want them to leave before him. And if he did anything bad to Albie or, shudder, Astrid, why would he want Bernie and Chet to find them. I think the smell that Chet smelled was definitely the cheesy smell from Albie, but maybe he was checking up on Foster, and Foster didn't know. If so, Foster may be in big trouble — you don't tug on superman's cape and you don't mess around with Albie (isn't that right, Jim Croce), I'm sure.
Anyway, it's real hot here today, and I am sure it's miserable for the Newfs, even up north. Thunderstorms and hail likely tonight; it will help cool things down but otherwise, yuck. Wookie

Not a newcomer, but I've been out of town at the beach and it may take a while to catch up to you guys and your zaniness.
Loved watching your nation playing in the waves and chasing balls and even sea gulls.
A lady was walking four english bull dogs. A toddler boy saw them and ran to them with his arms out. When he got close enough, he bowed at the waist and touched his forehead to each dog's back. Awesome communication between nations.
Have a good weekend, everybody, especially you, Chet.

Grunt!… I wish someone would come home from busy season and feed me!… snort!… I’m starving again!…cough!

Eureka!…. Does anyone here watch that quirky show on SciFi?… snort!… We caught a few eps last season and became hooked on it… grunt!… It’s been ages since we saw an episode, but tonight we found season 3 out On Demand! …whoopee!….We can finally catch up a bit ..heh!
Spring!… Gearing up for Summer is a very hectic time around here… snort!…What with busy season and all ….sniff!… Then all the work we have to do outside every night – I help by watching everything very closely… grunt!… On top of that trying to watch every possible baseball game the Rockies play… well! … Plus all the usual stuff…. hmmm… it’s a wonder it all gets done…grunt!
Sam!… I don’t remember Alice talking or cuddling with anyone except for Wookie!… snort!… You have got to stop making up stories young lady!… heh!

Let's see,
Alice, awesome pics. You really have the staff trained.
Wookie, much cooler today. So, of course, we got the air conditioners in today! It's supposed to be nice for the next few days. We missed the HUGE storm here. West and North of us had a tornado!!!
Bluecat, what a wonderful mind picture you gave us!
Rio, are you able to turn the TV on yourself? Are you in control of the remote? Scary thought. If you can operate the TV, can you fix dinner for your friend?
And I LOVE Eureka. So glad it's on demand now if it would just get on NETFLIX!!!
3:01 pm on May 27th, 2010
Rio, you were too busy drinking beer and watching baseball!

Rio: What is your friend busy doing during busy season – or is it a secret?

I wonder if the title of todays post is a nod to that odd song (c'mon everybody, sing!) You've Got Your Pants On The Ground".
(I don't know the rest, but I'll bet Admin does!)
Mom likes Rachael Maddow also. She watches her every night!
And we love Jim Croce!!!!!!

Yikes! I just clicked on Alice's first picture two times and got an extreme close-up of Alice's eyes. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! I am usually immune but the almost instantaneous hypnotism grabbed me and I could not figure out for a moment how to get rid of those eyes. Only by focusing with all my might was I able to unlock the mental hold she had on me and click out of there. One more instant and I would have been in her power.
Lexi: are you sleeping?
3:27 pm on May 27th, 2010
Sam!… My orders are to put ‘everything’ into the individual reports!…snort!… Now if you had cuddled with Alice, you were supposed to detail that in your final report! … grunt!… I suspect there is still training to be done on after-mission paperwork… sigh!
Melanie… I do not control the remote!… snort!…She has blocked most of the channels I want to watch anyway… heh!… I don’t have TV till my friend gets home.. sniff!… I am not allowed near the stove in anyway shape or form… grunt!…Eureka is so imaginative!…We love it and are very glad its back and going to be on again sometime this summer… gruff!
3:30 pm on May 27th, 2010
I like Bluecat's story about the toddler and bull dogs. What was the toddler "communicating" by touching each back with his forhead? Melanie?

Dawson, mom also loves water. She can be as strange about it as Bernie is. It is interesting how Spence knew that people living in the desert, especially since he lives where there is lots of water, would do things like hang pictures of waterfalls in their house. My mom and dad love paintings of sailing ships from the early 19th century.
The Rio Grande is an impressive river right now because our snowpack was above normal. Mom thinks it is facinating, but I close my eyes when we drive across it.

My friend is very busy being at busy season during most of the day… snort!… Busy season does not last forever, but when it is alive, it takes a toll on me the most… grunt! …She’s like living the dream or something! … groan!… Getting up early, coming home late…grump!… The only reason I know she won’t stay there all night is because the Rockies are usually playing during the evening…cough!…She has to get home for that!…wheeze!… I don’t know what she does during the day-games??…hmmm?
3:41 pm on May 27th, 2010
D A W S O N!…. Don’t wake her up for gawds sake… gasp!… Its nice and peaceful around here without ‘her’….shhhhh!..
3:43 pm on May 27th, 2010
Dawson, I'm glad you were able to get out of the hypnotic grip of Alice's eyes.
Whew, such power!
B. Stover, I will have to put my forehead to the dogs' backs tomorrow and see what happens. Right now they are all asleep.
I remember a Koontz novel (can't remember which one) that someone had a gift of touching a dog and feeling it's dreams. The dreams of dogs were full of the feeling of loving Other.

Wolfie, I thought the same thing about the title of today's blog and that Pants on the Ground Song. That song is so funny and so true. We've seen the pants actually fall down to the ground. It's not a pretty sight.

Gruff!… In my experience kids love dogs and love to touch them!… snort!… I live in a neighborhood with TONS of kids…sigh… Whenever we are outside, I resign myself to be petted and mocked, by the tons of kids that just have to try and pet me… grunt!… I am used to it and I never bite, but on the inside I am thinking, JUST LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE!… wheeze!… Kids, like old people, love us guys…. wheeze!… and show it in unusual ways sometimes!…heh!
4:56 pm on May 27th, 2010
I am always happy to encounter kids that are not afraid of dogs, but, at the same time, parents have to teach their kids how to approach and make friends with a strange dog.
I think it is so sad when kids and adults are afraid of dogs. They are missing out on so much love and friendship.

Fear!… hey! That should be on my ‘List of Smells’ that Stover requested yesterday! … cough!… I have seen some dogs lash out at that smell! … sniff!… I do not induce that kind of reaction from kids or anyone I guess because I have never smelt ‘Fear’ up-close and personal… snort….Although, here on the blog it is another thing!…growl!
Agent Wookie!… I want everyone to be trained on how to fill out their post-mission reports!..ASAP!… BARK! … That’s an order! Dammit!… heh!

Rio – now we are wondering what the "Busy Time" is? It's too late for preparing taxes and too early for pickin' corn. Hmmmm, another mystery. Maybe you can ask her? In the morning, when she's not tired and cranky?
Apparently Malia asked her daddy today – "Well, are you going to plug up the hole today?" I think he's on it!

Melanie,
Would that Koontz novel be "Watchers"? I just read most of it. Heh heh heh. It had two stories. I only read the dog's story. The other story was too scary for me. The dog was a genetically altered life form that was so very intelligent it learned to read and could type on the computer. It escaped from the lab where it was 'created' and while escaping it let out the evil humanoid that was 'created' to kill. That is the part of the story I didn't read.
I loved the dog's story though.
