Facts And Nothing But
“C’mon, big guy.”
I opened my eyes. Still at the Dry Gulch, but nighttime now, and Colonel Bob was gone.
“That sure was interesting,” Bernie said as we drove home, me riding shotgun, my favorite spot, the night air rushing by.
No question about it: the Dry Gulch was always interesting. Max’s Memphis Ribs is another restaurant I like. The owners’s this great guy, Cleon Maxwell.
What else? Am I leaving anything out? Missing something? Not that I can think of.
Sharon Kay Penman, noted author of historical fiction, wrote this tribute to her late dog, Cody.

Oh Chet, how I love you but you should have stayed awake! And we get more on Little Phil, no he does not sound like a totally good guy, but more of the old West is coming forward here. Pretty cool.
Penman's tribute is wonderful. A Grand Dog Cody. The arthritis of the spine seems to be a problem in some breeds. I had a rescue dog named Clara (got her one Christmas) who was part German Shepherd. She also got arthritis of the spine. I fixed a sling for her and would support her back legs. She loved to go swimming at that time, so I would walk her down to the river with her back legs in the air and she would swim and swim and swim. She totally enjoyed that. Then her quality of life started going down and she went to sleep in my arms.
She was also a wonderful dog. But then the Nation within the Nation is wonderful.

Chet, you are such a tease! Maybe the conversation will come back to you if Bernie gave you some steak tips to jog your memory. The sense of smell can be very powerful in triggering memories.

Hey everyone, make sure you have more than one tissue handy when you read that tribute to Cody. Really moving. Betcha it'll even bring a tear or two to Rio's eyes.

SPOILER ALERT FOR OBLIVION: Rio, I thought the ending interesting because it's so open-ended. We don't know what will happen since we don't know if the treatments will work. The entire situation with N's loss of memory, it seems to me, caused an unusual narrative dilemma. I had a suspicion that it was E when things went missing after she was at N's house. And, of course, we had been told that she was from Barstow. I didn't realize that she was blond until near the end when it became obvious that she was the other girl…the blond…in the photo. A femme fatale of the most disastrous kind. I think Tutor was scarier and I liked it better only because I prefer that type of story.

Sniff!…. A big heart-felt salute to Cody, one of the best …. snort!… what a guy!

Oh!… this is my friend Pepper beside me…snort!… She likes to play rough!… grunt!… Sometimes she gets the best of me and holds me down on the ground with her big paw… wheeze!
6:38 am on March 22nd, 2010
Chet it sounds as though you've been listening to Dragnet.
6:46 am on March 22nd, 2010
Rio – They say that a photograph add 10 pounds, so how come it didn't add those same 10 pounds to Pepper?
SiberH was talking about carrying you like Chet carried Princess, and I can see SiberH is very big and strong, but he might want to rethink this. I'm just sayin' …

*** SPOILER ALERT FOR OBLIVION ***
Stover!… I knew E was involved right away – especially after re-reading the first 8 or so chapters…snort! The whole ending bothered me…grunt!… I can’t believe that P would have left that “item” behind. I could see N doing that, but not P. And that sort of ruined the end for me. Plus the fact that P-N should have died. …wheeze!
7:01 am on March 22nd, 2010
Molly!… Are you insinuating something??….snort!
7:32 am on March 22nd, 2010
That's a cute photo Rio!! okay I could pull you in a litttle wagon or a sled.
I could get upset with Chet for falling asleep and missing out on the story, but in the same situation, I would do the same thing. I have done the same thing. Human conversation is sometimes like a lullaby. Chet will come through for us, never fear.
I'll be back here later in the day. I'm going to do errands with mom now. We are behind on getting stuff done because of the Iditarod. Mom will read the tribute to Cody when we get back. She knows she will start blubbering. Get out the tissue box.

SPOILER ALERT
Rio: Sorry but I'm not following. What item was left behind…the gun?
And I like the picture.

*** SPOILER ALERT FOR OBLIVION ***
Hmmm… someone else I was talking to about this couldn’t remember that “item” either….snort!… Maybe I need to re-visit those last chapters….grunt!… just to make sure I know what I am yapping about. .. wheeze!… I’ll get back to you tonight about this.
8:09 am on March 22nd, 2010
Chet,
I'd have tried to wake you up but I 'took a little nap' myself and didn't wake up until dark. I read a bit about Jubal Early and went back to bed.
Rio: pound for pound, I'd say your mom and dad got a bargain! Whatever they paid.
Stover: thanks for channeling that info through me yesterday, it really helped my reputation. I think, therefore I am dangerous.
9:45 am on March 22nd, 2010
Geeze!… has that great big notice from Admin been there this whole time??… snort!… I just now saw it… grunt!… Finally website changes!…hooray!
10:37 am on March 22nd, 2010
Rio! Such a cute…achoo!…photo of you! And I think that i'm…achoo!…sneezing less! So I could go to…wherever Chet and Bernie…achoo!…and Admin and Spence live! Where is it they live? Achoo!
10:39 am on March 22nd, 2010
Gracious! As if there isn't enough digital wackiness happening already.
12:21 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Rio, Your friend Pepper looks like a Blue Heeler, or at least part so. Does she keep thouse big nasty horses in line? Mom has been keeping a close eye on me when we go outside – she said no more chicken escapades, whatever that means. A girl just wants to have fun, you know? We are waiting for Oblivion to arrive, so we didn't read all those Spoilers up above.
12:35 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Speaking of digital wackiness, what EXACTLY happened in this post today? I'm confused….anyone else?
12:48 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Lexi: Chet fell asleep after the steak tips so didn't hear about the "interesting" things said between Bernie and Col. Bob and, thus, cannot narrate them to us.
1:12 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Lexi – It is also possible that Dawson was speaking in general about this blog. "Interesting," as the queen would say.
1:44 pm on March 22nd, 2010
I thought Dawson was speaking about Admin's statement about "digital wackiness."
1:50 pm on March 22nd, 2010
B. – I meant that Dawson may have been linking "digital wackiness" to this blog. You, yourself, described it (correctly) as Alice in Wonderland.
1:57 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Note to Admin: Dogs don't always deal well with change, except for Rio who seems to have an open mind about change to the website. I will try my best to follow Rio's example.
2:09 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Gosh!… it’s like a Larry, Moe & Curly routine!….snort!… Can you guys do “Who’s On First”?….heh
2:17 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Snicker!… I want that goofy hat that Little Phil is wearing!… snort!… I need it for a party I’ve been invited to…heh!
3:09 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Yikes!
I was referring to Rio referring to Admin's post about digital wackiness which I thought the whole Alice's photo not being posted right away debacle could be an example of.?
3:10 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Yes, that hat is You, Rio.
3:13 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Well, the Newf Pack and I are headed to bed. Which means in the morning there will be many more posts. Most of you are night owls!

Goodnight Newfies, Melanie.

**** SPOILER ALERT TO OBLIVION ****
Stover!… Chapter 34, page 352 in the paper back… Paragraph begins with “The Dr. Tulp postcard.” … snort! … Those next 3 paragraphs bug the hell out of me… grunt!.. because P would never have left it behind…Never!…. He was too ‘Top of his game!’… In my opinion, anyway.
3:46 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Thanks, B. Stover and Mollypop! Achoo! And goodnight…achoo!…to all of you cats and dogs!

4:25 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Oh boy!… Its one of those ‘early nights’ for everyone… snort!…. With 24 on tonight, who has time to sleep!?… grunt!… I just pray Wookie survives March Madness….grump!… That has got to be over soon, right?… wheeze!…Me and basketball don’t go together so well… grumble!… Baseball!… Lord!… I can’t wait for baseball season to start!….ooooooo
4:25 pm on March 22nd, 2010
SPOILER ALERT
Yes, I see. And he also says that if he had realized the significance of the Dr. Tulp postcard when he saw it during the Tiffany LeVasseur case, Nicolette Levy may not have been murdered. Perhaps he couldn't take evidence away? He didn't know what E was at that time and how she would use the knowledge. I guess he's a flawed hero even as P. In film noir the detective/hero is usually flawed. I understand your problem with this and the fact that he doesn't die.
4:35 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Hi there Rio,
I had to get out my copy of OBLIVION and check out what you meant. I guess that one just slid on by me. Too much else happening there.
I know what bothers you about the ending of OBLIVION. The thing that I really like about it. heh heh heh
~~Baseball!!! yeah!!! Didja see the Twins signed Joe Mauer! Whooheee!!!
Alice Johnson who loves her baseball.
4:46 pm on March 22nd, 2010
I'm having trouble here – too many spoiler alerts since I haven't read the book. Tomorrow I'm just going to read them all and that's that.
5:00 pm on March 22nd, 2010
**** SPOILER ALERT TO OBLIVION ****
Oh!… Thank Gawd you see what I see!…snort!… The thing is, no one else knew at the time what P had put together about the postcard… grunt!… so taking it would not have been an issue…just pocket it and run out. BUT HE LEFT IT BEHIND… how crazy is that?
And is it really our simplest of mistakes that lead lives down the path of destruction? …. Maybe that’s the whole point after all. For a while I was disappointed in the ending, but talking about it, has helped me (maybe) understand what the brilliant author is saying… We are all one or two wrong steps away from disaster?…. scary!
5:02 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Sorry!… Molly!… just too good a book not to talk about!… snort!… read it and weep!
5:05 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Baseball!… Oh No!… grunt!… Now Alice and I will be at odds with each other all during baseball season!….snort!… Bring it on baby!.. wheeze!… It’s all ours this year… heh!
5:08 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Crap!… 24 has started..snort!.. Alice always knows when to distract me…cripes!
5:23 pm on March 22nd, 2010
~~Rio,
It is just that the Staff's DH goes down to watch 24 and leaves the computer unattended.
heh heh heh
Otherwise I would be earlier.
AJ
5:37 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Staffs!… “DH”… who the hell is that?… snort!… So what was the “thing” that you really liked about the ending of Oblivion Alice??… grunt!… tell me please.
5:50 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Hey!…if you click on my photo…snort!… I get even bigger and Pepper gets even skinnier!… what the hell?…grump!
6:12 pm on March 22nd, 2010
I've been reviewing all the mission reports…anort!…Lexi finally felt well enough to submit hers… hmmmm…interesting.
Good night All!…love and kisses!
6:14 pm on March 22nd, 2010
Heh!… anort! = snort!… I had a “Spencer” moment there… gruff!
7:14 pm on March 22nd, 2010
~~ Rio,
DH is "dear husband". Or, the other staff. Boy staff and girl staff. There are two.
If I tell you the thing that I really liked it will be a major spoiler. I can't do that. But it is that thing that happened at the end. The last of Chapter 35.
More I will not say. Just call me zippy.
Alice J.

Rio, if you're still awake, quite a twist at the end of 24 tonight!! We did not see that coming.
Thanks, Chet, for the link to the story of Cody. Sometimes we think no one could love their animal family as much as my Mom loves us and it's nice to see that there are many others who feel just as strongly about theirs.
