Exotic Animals

“Wasn’t Too Fetch A Thief kind if about this?” says Admin.

“Kind of,” says Spence.

“What is with some people, that they’d want to own a caged-up lion or tiger?”

“I don’t know.”

“Even the whole zoo thing is starting to bother me.”

“Me, too,” says Spence. “Although not everyone can get to a game park in Africa. And there’s something awesome about seeing these creatures up close.”

“Much less awesome when they’re wasting their lives away behind bars,” Admin says.

“Agreed,” says Spence. “I wonder what others think.”

Welcome Emma, Teddy the napper.

I think that the only time an animal should be “captive” is when it is being helped through an injury or illness. Otherwise, animals should be left in their natural environments.

    Good morning all.

    Good morning.
It is very sad to see a once majestic tiger pacing in a cage.
    Worth it!
It is worth a week off of school for a teenager who hates reading to enjoy the experience of reading a good book.

Good morning, Chet, Spencer, Admin, Bee, and Dawson,
We agree wholeheartedly about zoos. Even tho its neat to see the animals up close, that is not the way they are meant to live.

Wildlife!…. Here in Colorado there is a Wildlife Sanctuary that rescues Lions and Tigers and Bears and Wolves and probably other guys too from the stupidity of humans….snort!….The santuary provides a life of dignity and contentment for the animals. Their saying is “Saving one animal may not change the World… but surely – for that one animal… the World will change forever!” ….sniff! …. My friend has been out there and it is an awesome place. They rehabilitate the animals to the point they can live in large open areas ….sneeze! ….It’s a more realistic life style than being caged up…grunt! … Here is a link to their website.

Morning Chet! The Pack is snoozing this morning. Wet, wet, wet . . . We have a lot of wild animals living near us. And, except for the snigglefritzing beavers, everyone gets a long. When the flock of 50 wild turkeys were in the neighborhood, we didn’t go chasing them around with a camera so that we would get chased. (still can’t get over that strange TV producer doing that) When a moose walks down the street, we keep the Pack inside the house. Bears pass through but they usually stay away from our house. We’ve also had coyotes (Eastern), a fox eating some seeds, porcupines eating the apples out of the trees, deer (dog, did they freak out when the Pack started barking. So we treat wild animals as wild animals because they ARE!

So keeping wild animals by a single person because they can? Naw, The Pack and I vote NO!

Zoos? Depends on the zoo. If zoos are there for education, helping keep endangered animals’ populations high to be released, yes I’m for them!

Now why they had to shoot to kill? Have no idea. I do know that not only did the idiot let them loose before he killed himself, he ruined their cages so they couldn’t be put back in . . . All us here shaking our heads.

Ohio is a big place for puppy mills too.

I started off about 30 minutes ago and then Patsy needed a tummy and then YSAS called and then I needed more coco, so the upshot is

    I didn’t say “Hello Everyone!”.

Bella, ME nephew has asthma. Been under control for years! This fall has been very rough. We have had one frost so far and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of rain. Usually by this time we have had a killing frost and snow. The snow doesn’t usually stick but snow for sure.

His asthma is bad, my allergies are bad . . . Don’t usually wish for COLD weather, but would really like some!

Good morning all. I vote against most of the zoo’s I have ever seen. I try not to go there they make me sad.

I have no comment on the guy who let all his animals go and then killed himself. Anything I would say would be impolite.

    11:24 am on October 20th, 2011

Good Morning All. We just watched a news report about the exotic animals, and were shocked at the pictures of all the animals lined up after being shot. It’s very disturbing to us. Poor things. The Bengals are very rare and this just makes it worse. But even more disturbing is the fact that a human being who is supposed to be taking care of the animals would put his charges in a situation where they were killed like that. He was suicidal, and clearly not thinking about what could/did happen.

It’s sad to think that someone is so distressed that he can hurt innocent lives, as well as take his own. There are hotlines out there for that. It’s unfortunate that he didn’t feel he could call one, or at least place his animals appropriately first.

Outside of San Antonio, there is a wild life refuge you can drive your car through. Mom told about the time she took her nephew CL there. They had bought some kibble to feed the animals. Talk about up close and personal…an antelope stuck his head inside the car, and grabbed the bag out of CL’s hand!

So maybe there isn’t any true wildlife in a case like that. The creatures get used to the public driving through, and feeding them. Same thing happens in zoos and here at home. We are all domesticated in some fashion…so it’s hard to rationalize the killing of the exotics.

Anyway, let’s all try to have a positive day. The sun is out and the air is cool, and we’re going for a walk. Talk to you all soon.

  13. BARB & MAGGIE
    11:26 am on October 20th, 2011

We are not totally opposed to zoos, if they are done right. If the animals have a fairly natural habitat, then it gives people a chance to see them, and maybe increase public awareness of the need to provide for them in this world of shrinking habitats.

Now about the idiot who cased the tragic events in Ohio – why didn’t he just kill himself? He set those poor animals up for almost certain death. We wish they could have saved them by keeping people inside while they safely tranquilized and recaptured them, but perhaps that was not realistic. This guy had 18 Bengal tigers that are endangered, with only 2500 left in the entire word, and they are now shot dead. Makes me sick!

I think the solution might be tougher laws against individuals purchasing and owning these wild creatures. Most of them don’t have a clue what they are doing. Ohio is one of the few states that doesn’t have laws about this. Illinois is much tougher.

Lions, tigers and bears indeed. It was sad to hear of all those wild animals being killed. We join Staff in saying no comments about the owner, as they would surely be moderated big time.

This happened in the Boulder, Colorado area recently. This guy’s a tiny bit bigger than my nemesis, the raccoon and that Maine Coon Cat isn’t so small either

Whooee Masquers! Scary! We do NOT repeat have mountain lions here in the North East. At least that is what the officials tell us. There’s one or two that is spotted near my sister’s (15 miles away) every winter. There has also been pictures, but the official “word” is they do not exist here.

B.Stover: Usually we have had a killing frost and snow (not to stay though) by this time. We’ve had a frost but not hard. So I brought in the begonia (that’s what I was told to do by my plant guru) and told not to water it except once a month. And have had more flowers than I did all summer. The fuchsia have never lasted this long either, so I brought them in and they are happily producing flower after flower.

    Weird.

Good morning, all. I’m working from home today and AJ is getting ready to leave for a day trip for work; he’ll be back late tonight.

I’m sickened and disturbed at the loss of life. It was not the fault of the exotic animals, but the result of one individual’s choices. Beyond sadness that the individual chose to end his life, like Staff and others, I won’t comment on the human involved.

Yesterday, I saw a member of the nation wandering across the road. I pulled over and while I was on the side of the road, the dog in the opposite lane and truck neared and didn’t slow down. I was furious. The dog became spooked and ran off.

In a Planet of the Apes scenario, some might think twice about caging exotic animals. Having said this, Magpie does have a point. Their habitats are becoming smaller and smaller as the human population expands. Humans have become the most dangerous animal on the planet.
Melanie: Your begonia is doing fantastic in the window location. Maybe you can offer some advice for growing fuchsias. Ours got soaked in the rain last spring and haven’t been the same since. We brought them in the house a couple of weeks ago, but they are still losing leaves and looking quite sad. Do you prune them in the fall? How often to water in the winter?
SnowBella: Asthma! That explains your wheezing comment from last night. Nana sympathizes with you. She has had asthma since her early thirties, even ending up in the hospital at one point.
Now she has an ProAir/Albuterol inhaler on hand at all times and a prescription for predisone for emergencies.

After what happened in Ohio, the public pressure is really going to increase for these states like Ohio to pass laws against allowing indivudals to keep exotic animals. I hope some good will come out of the tragedy that happened in Ohio yesterday, but I don’t know.

Zoos are contributing a lot toward the saving of exotic and endangered species, but mom still won’t go to a zoo. Zoos may be the only place left that people can see some of these animals. To have truly wild animals living their natural lives, we also have to save their habitat and we aren’t doing that.

Wildife Sanctuaries are a different story. They are a safe place for the animals acquired by these idiots that think they just have to have a tiger or a wolf and then are surprised to learn they are living with a wild animal.

Bella – our Dad has asthma pretty bad, and this fall has been a tough one for him. come to think of it, summer was rough too. With all the rain we have had, absolutely everything is putting out mold spores, and wind like today is spreading them around to surfaces that don’t usually have mold. Glad you got the new meds. Hope you will breath easier soon.

Rio — Those were both really terrific videos. Boy, can that squirrel get around.

I don’t udnerstand why it was necessary to kill all the animals in Ohio. It seems as though considerations of cost and convenience won out over everything else.

As regards zoos, I would tend to agree with Barb and Maggie; if done right, they may not be so bad. But that is a big if. Of course, you all know what our friends Simon and Garfunkel has to say on this subject (everyone feel free to sing along if you want to):

    Someone told me
It’s all happening at the zoo.

    I do believe it,
    I do believe it’s true.

It’s a light and tumble journey
    From the East Side to the park;
Just a fine and fancy ramble
    To the zoo.

But you can take the crosstown bus
If it’s raining or it’s cold,
And the animals will love it
    If you do.

    Somethin’ tells me
It’s all happening at the zoo.

    The monkeys stand for honesty,
    Giraffes are insincere,
And the elephants are kindly but
    They’re dumb.
    Orangutans are skeptical
    Of changes in their cages,
And the zookeeper is very fond of rum.

    Zebras are reactionaries,
    Antelopes are missionaries,
    Pigeons plot in secrecy,
    And hamsters turn on frequently.
What a gas! You gotta come and see
    At the zoo.

She put the term “mare/foal pen” in the ad, and one of the goofy agents here at the ofice didn’t know what a foal was. Now a murder of crows we could understand, but isn’t the word foal pretty basic? Especially since we are not living in NYC here, we are in the country!

I have put my efforts of the last few years on the causes to free the elephants. Our Buffalo Zoo freed the cats many years ago, and lots of my $$$ helped. Now the zoo is doing a lot to preserve endangered species, but refuses to let go of the elephants. There were three, Buki died, and after millions of dollars the elephant house got enlarged (!!) to 60 x 30 feet. They have to be chained at night. The curator keeps them because they bring money in. She has no heart.

Sam: You look mahvelous in your sweater…very chic. I hope you have a great time with your girl. Glad Mollypop’s mom will be with you. Your hair has grown in quite nicely.

I loved the YouTube highlights of the 1955 World Series. Some of the greatest names in baseball playing in that game. Heh, and the fans! looking like they stepped right out of the set of Mad Men.

I have to go down to the deep dark basement and watch the second game with MR.Staff. The popcorn is all made and the game is on so off I go. I hope the beautiful Luna and Belle Starr blurr safely. Mollypop’s Mom you are right to go to help Sam visit her girl. Keep busy. That always helped me. That and reading and good walks.

We saw Moneyball today. Very interesting but not as much baseball action as I expected.

Close!…My friend cut it close tonight. Working out after the busy place again and then fetching supper for her mother…sniff!…Is it just me or do you guys think it is a bit cruel to ask someone who is watching everything they eat to go get fast food for them after they work out?…wheeze!… I don’t know how my friend did it, but she did. She got fast-food for her mother and not herself…..sniff!… Like I say, once she puts her mind to sumthing, she does it whole heartedly….chuffle!

I have decided I would feel better if a guy was going along to keep Rose company. There is nothing wrong with beautiful women, but all three of them could be doing something like painting their toenails while they should be watching each others backs. Maybe Franklin should go along.

Wow, White Wings continues its journey . . . cool.

I know I got things done today. Nothing I wanted to, but when you are a manager of a YSAS sometimes you just have to work.

It would have helped if my brain had been more in gear, or if the dues bill for one of his Unions had been a bit clearer about what they wanted . . .

It is difficult to be a lateral thinker in a linear thinking designed world.

Bella – those girls are beautiful!

On the subject of zoos – MAma did like Busch Garden in Florida. The animals all have nice, large habitats. The giraffes, zebras, antelopes and other ruminanants have a huge pastures enclosure. You can take an open air train thru, or ride the sky tram to look down. The elephants have a big area with a huge moat to keep the people from harrassing them.
The most amazing thing to her was the gorilla enclosure. It was literally acres of land with a big hill and manmade caves. There were no bars, there were a series of large picture windows where people could watch them.
Mama was all by herself at one window, and this giant silverback came near and was picking at some plants. It’s not the same as seeing them on tv or movies. Mama was so amazed she found herself in tears. Gorillas are HUGE, and although we have always heard people talk about how “human” they are, she was astounded by the raw power and elegance of these creatures – and the expressive faces and eyes.
Encountering these creatures face to face changed Mama forever – changed the way she thought about gorillas and the need to preserve their habitat. Maybe that could be a good side about good, spacious and educational zoos.
Places that have little cages with wild animals on display don’t deserve the sobriquet “zoo” – they should be called what they are – legal, torture facilities.

Ok, putting the soap box away for now. Good night all.
    PS – Go Rangers!
