Everything Explained
“Please explain America to me,” says Mr. Singh.
We’re at his pawn shop, but this time – a real first – we’re not pawning Bernie’s grandfather’s watch, our most valuable possession. In fact, we’re not pawning anything. Instead we’re searching for a bauble, whatever that is, for Suzie. Lamb curry’s cooking somewhere out back, making it real hard to concentrate.
“Explain America?” Bernie says.
“Do not get me wrong, Bernie,” says Mr. Singh. So much fun, listening to how he talks. “Coming here was the best move of my life. But sometimes it’s a bit confusing. For example, is Mr. Clinton back to being the president again?”
“Huh?” says Bernie.
“What is the explanation for this press conference yesterday?” says Mr. Singh. “Did not Mr. Obama turn over the reins?”
Bernie laughs, claps Mr. Singh on the back. Mr. Singh’s a soft little guy, lurches a bit. “Here’s the thing,” Bernie says. “There are no reins, so just enjoy the ride.”
“What a joker you are, Bernie! Here is a ruby ring for a very attractive price.”
Note from Spence: the blog may be experiencing some sort of technical difficulty at this time. We’ll try to fix it ASAP.

Bernie: Yes! A ruby would be good. Or an emerald.

I have found that people who immigrated to the US are much more tolerant of our government than we are. I talk to lots of these citizens during my winter work. They are almost unanimous in their feeling that our government, our nation, is a good one.
Sometimes it helps to remember that when I want to vote out every lily livered politician in Washington.
Sometimes it doesn’t…

Snort! as a certain Pug would say. . .
” . . just enjoy the ride” THAT’S my new outlook on politics!
Ruby: good
Emerald: good
I saw some really cool rings that were Gibeon Meteroite, Rubies and Sapphire.
Awesome, Heaven and Earth!

Thumbs up to staff!
Mom is heading out to Bob Evans for breakfast with her sister and mom. Grandma C is visiting this week to clear out all the crapola in this house so that mom can get ready to sell this place. It has been a good home for me, but since it is just me and mom, it is waaaaayy too big for us. We are gonna get rid of this 3 bed/2 bath, and rent a 1 bedroom apt for the time being…until mom gets back on her feet. Not too sure what that means because any time mom is upright she is on her feet. Me? I’m tip top. All 4 paws good to go.

Jasper: Do you have to move to Lansing with the new job?
10:40 am on December 11th, 2010
Clinton!… He’s lost weight. I was wondering the same thing yesterday afternoon. Did Obama resign and give the job to Billy Boy?….hmmm!… I’m not sure who is in charge of this country, but I do know who is in charge of this house and we are getting ready to go bust Grandma out and take her shoe shopping!… snort!…Now that’s my idea of a good time!…Woooo!
Outsourced!… If you think Mr Singh is funny, you should check out a show called “Outsourced”….snort!… It’s on Demand. It is set in India (not really) but they try to make it look like India…grunt!…Very funny!

I have a word of the day: octothorpe. I’d never heard of it until just now when I read it in an article in the Guardian.

Moving: No, I don’t have to move to Lansing, but I will be driving from Grand Rapids to Lansing every day. It’s 1 hour each way.
My plan has always been to sell this house and move to an apartment, but lack of a job put the kabosh on that. Son has been moved out for a number of years, so it’s time to downsize.
12:14 pm on December 11th, 2010
B.Stover: I’ll have to look that up after lunch.
Doc called Dan a ROLLS-ROYCE 81
That sounds good. He says that Dan might be 81 but otherwise he’s really great.
Hmm. Which would make me . . .
A Chevy Vega 56?

More: I did live in Lansing from 1978 to 1990 so I am familiar with the area and know people there. I am not opposed to moving back. Ideally, I would like to rent an apt in downtown Lans for a couple of years, then do an old lady condo for retirement.
My days and nights are all mixed up. Sometimes I sleep all day and am up all night. I am working to get my clock reset to first shift. I am determined to stay up until 6p and then go to bed.
Pie: bought stuff for apple and cherry pies for dinner tomorrow. BIL got a deal on turkey, so we are having another holiday dinner tomorrow. Why not? Tis the season.
Son is off with my ex and fam celebrating their Christmas this weekend. Son and GF, along with son’s dad and his GF are headed to FL on 12/17 to visit with son’s dad’s dad and wife for 2 weeks in Naples. Son is planning to propose to GF on the beach at sunset during vacation. I saw the ring, 3 princess cut stones, along with smaller stones along each side. It’s a beaut, and perfect for his girl.

Very well said, Staff. I want to remember that.
I like Bernie’s attitude about politics. It is better than mine.
I read that Clinton has become a vegetarian so that might explain the weight loss…no more Big Macs.
A ruby would be nice, or an emerald, or how about a sapphire to match my eyes.
12:31 pm on December 11th, 2010
Jasper: I like condo living because one doesn’t have to do outside maintenance. Good luck selling the house. Pies sound yummy.

Good morning everybody!
Melanie- mom says to tell you that she believes in going by birth year and that she is a classic ’57 chevy!
Chet you might want to nudge Bernie down to the braclets or necklaces. To us, rings signify more. Now, if that is his intention, then GO FOR IT, BIG GUY. A ring from a man to a woman is to us like a pre-engagement gift, but that is just us…
We did not see the press conference yesterday..what was billy boy talking about.
Mom is at the Big Orange Box today. The Amex was on the counter…shop, shop, shop…she came back in from the car to get it…grumble, grumble…how does she expect me to get my shopping done without plastic..bah..I don’t see her taking me to the store Macy’s..online is my only choice…just because she has not bought even one gift does not mean everyone else is not on the ball..maybe after she goes to sleep Belle can get the card..the girl has skills! ha

OMG!….Getting Grandma out to the car, into the store, out to the car, into the restaurant, out to the car, into the home…snort!… My friend is exhausted. She had to carry the heavy bottle of oxygen and she had to hold onto Grandma every step….wheeze! … It turned out great though, both my friend and Grandma got new shoes…sneeze!… They both have tiny feet so it is always a miracle when they can find shoes that fit…heh!…I have built in shoes, that’s all I need…snort!… My friend also found a great pair of winter boots on sale too!… sniff!…Maybe she won’t fall and kill herself in the icy parking lot this winter…heh!

Hey, I think we’re back. . .
Had something to say around 1:30 but have no idea what it was.
B. Stover: Chevy Vega is considered to be one of the worst cars ever made. Only made through some of the 70’s. Of course, ex and I had one. Yuck.
I said 56 because I am a woman of a “certain age”!

Barb took off early this morning before today’s post so she could shop and be back before the bad weather.
We saw that Minneapolis may be getting up to 20″ of snow. Staff, isn’t that where you are now? Yeah, we were wondering about your winter work too. Do you stay there till planting time?
It is now snowing here and freezing stuff and high winds are supposed to start tonight and in to tomorrow with “white-out conditions” tomorrow.
We are in till Monday, except for a couple of trips to the coop. Will do some wrapping and make some cookies tomorrow. We usually do the little pecan drops that are rolled in powdered sugar, and date pin-wheels. Both freeze well and look festive.

Hey, thanks for the welcomes friends. As Mollypops says, I’m a pretty busy guy especially at this time of year. I’ve been working very hard on my Blou Christmas

project to collect donations the local SPCA and an animal sanctuary near Ellicottville.
I did do some reading before posting and must say that the recipes I read today sound as though they’re worth trying. I’m adding a picture to this post to show you some of the donations we received so far. We’re doing the Blou Christmas in honor of Blou who
went to doggie heaven last December in Ellicottville and Bradford, PA. In Bradford we’ve filled a store window already and are working on our second one. I guess Blou and I
have very generous friends.
5:14 pm on December 11th, 2010
TYB: Hi! Thank you for the picture. You look like you’re guarding everything. We’ve been having technical difficulties on the blog today but it should clear up.
Melanie: The comment section has been missing for me for a while. I was going to say that “women of a certain age” are the best! I’ve been one myself for some time now.
5:30 pm on December 11th, 2010
Bee and Melanie, We are like fine wines, right?
TYB, Welcome. Was it hard to sit still while that picture was being taken? Looks like you and your guy do some very good work.
We are getting lots of snow here.
5:32 pm on December 11th, 2010
Hi and Welcome TYB! That’s a cute photo…We wish you success in the fundraising. Pet people are usually the most generous of all.
Thank you Chet for working so hard to fix the blog’s technical problems.

6:06 pm on December 11th, 2010
Come on, Rio. I had more fun in the snow last week when we were getting 2 to 3 inches an hour than I’ve had in a long time. There is nothing like running and jumping into a pile of snow. Sometimes I actually disappeared from view, totally buried in the white stuff. I have to qualify this though. The snow was the light powdery stuff. I might be on your side in an argument about snow if it’s the wet, heavy, slushy kind.
6:10 pm on December 11th, 2010
Glad you are reporting in , Dawson, because I was going to ask one of you how much snow you have received so far. It would be fun to play in!!
6:13 pm on December 11th, 2010
Barb & Maggie,
Thanks for the welcome. To answer your question: it took no effort to get that picture.
My friend and I just play with the camera. I don’t think we’ve had to work to get any of the pictures we have. Everything is relaxed and candid. That way it’s fun. When things get difficult and take a lot of effort they become a job and we are retired. If you want to see some fun pictures of Blou, check out his website at http://www.bloudog.com.
6:25 pm on December 11th, 2010
TBY!…. Is your name misspelled?… grunt!… I hate snow and none of your blathering will change my mind….sneeze!…So don’t even try.
Party!… My friend is waiting for another friend to pick her up ….grumble!… I’ll be here all alone tonight with the wind howling like a bastard…snort!… I think I will just curl up in my warm soft bed with all my baseball toys…yawn!…I wonder how Wookie’s super spectacular New Mexico Christmas is going… sniff!sniff!… He never did come to get me last night… grunt!
6:46 pm on December 11th, 2010
TYB, We have visited the web site, and also have seen pics of Blou on the Friends of Chet page. He was a handsome guy. Barb was asking Mollypop if your friend has actually seen your parents, because we think you look like an English Shepherd. We had an ES breeder look at your pics and she agreed. ES dogs are frequently mistaken for Border Collie mixes, but we are a little calmer and not as interested in herding as BCs. We get super attached to our people, too.
Rio, Hope you are ok in all that wind. It will be here tomorrow.
6:47 pm on December 11th, 2010
Just checking in but gotta go because guests will be arriving shortly for the big party tonight. I may not be able to check back in until tomorrow morning though; these affairs tend to go rather late. Rio and SiberH, I made sure that there are places set for you if you are able to make it. Wookie
6:50 pm on December 11th, 2010
Rio
How can one misspell a three letter word? Tyb just happens to be an acronym for Thank You Blou. When Blou died a year ago, my friend knew that he’d never have another dog. When he found me and knew that I really needed him, he realized that he needed me also and that Blou had sent me to him. That’s where my name comes from.
Now, what does Rio stand for?
7:01 pm on December 11th, 2010
Barb & Maggie,
No, my friend never met my parents. He rescued me from a shelter. He was told that I was a border collie, but he knew that I had to have be a mix and guessed that I was part huskie from some of my characteristics. Actually he didn’t and doesn’t care what I am, and has done some research on ES and thinks that you and your friends may be right. He says that I am much calmer and less interested in herding than Blou was, and as for getting super attached, he’s thinking of changing my name to Glou.
7:02 pm on December 11th, 2010
Wookie, Thank you for remembering me and Rio. Here we are STUCK in Denver and Albuquerque, with the wind howling and no snow.(that is my personal complaint, not Rio’s)
Rio’s friend is going to a Xmas party and my mom is going to read…BORING!! Mom won’t let me use our truck to pick up Rio and drive to your house. She says I wouldn’t remember to come home until Spring.
I know your party will be a great success and you can tell us about it tomorrow. Rio and I will be lucky to get an extra chew strip here in the Wild Wild West.
7:05 pm on December 11th, 2010
I wonder what’s happened to my picture. All of a sudden I’ve disappeared from my posts.
7:11 pm on December 11th, 2010
As I go back over today’s entries, I’m surprised how much I look like Chet the Dog.
As a matter of fact we’re identical.
7:16 pm on December 11th, 2010
TYB lol Maybe they will get the blog bug fixed and your photo will return…strange technical happenings on the blog today.
7:24 pm on December 11th, 2010
TYB, Rio is from Colorado and is probably named for the Rio Grande River, and sometimes they call him River Dog. Not sure if he likes it, but then Rio can get a bit snarky at times. Don’t take him the wrong way, cause he is a softy inside. Mollypop probably told you all that.
Barb said to tell you that the nick name for English Shepherds is “English Shadows”. You probably know why.
Wookie, we are looking forward to seeing dinner party pictures tomorrow.
7:26 pm on December 11th, 2010
B&M: Fine wine indeed! I’ve been thinking. If you have salt–the kind you put outside to melt snow and ice–you could put some down as you go to the coop. That way you wouldn’t slip.
Rio: I just joined Netflix both the dvd and streaming to my laptop plan. Sorry you’ll be alone tonight.
Hi again TYB. Your picture should come back.
7:27 pm on December 11th, 2010
Maggie? How much snow do you have?
7:42 pm on December 11th, 2010
Hi TYB! Hope your avatar comes back soon. But you do look like Chet!
Bragging time here. Patsy and I went for our “stroll” and met the Bearded Collie puppy down the street. The Pack here and there have been talking for some time. (Jeez it can get loud) Anyhoo, Cindy and Willow were doing some street and car training (learning not to be scared or lunge) and here we come. Patsy had to be 5 times her size. Cindy asked which one I had, and I told her Patsy and she was 8 1/2.
Willow and Patsy sat and got treats and cars went by and Willow was fine. More treats and then Patsy decided that since Willow was a puppy she needed a wash up.
Snicker. I told Patsy that even if Willow was a puppy, she wasn’t HER puppy.
Cute dog.
Going upstairs where the heat is. BBL
7:46 pm on December 11th, 2010
Siber, We had about 4″ the other day, but not much new stuff yet. Maybe an inch. It is a combo of snow and rain and is going to turn to snow and ice as temps drop. Will be -5-10, actual temp, not wind chill on Monday. Tomorrow we will have a blizzard with blowing snow and a white-out. I think 3-5″ all together, but main problem with travel will be the wind and no visability. We may need your dog sled!
8:05 pm on December 11th, 2010
Bee, We will be very careful tomorrow going outside.
We think you will like Netflix. We have one to watch this weekend that you might like. It is called Temple Grandin, with Claire Danes. Looks really good!
8:08 pm on December 11th, 2010
Barb & MagPie AND B.Stover:
Hmm. On the radar it looks yucky for you guys. It also looks like we’re going to be stuck between two lows. That’s always interesting. The Pack will go into hibernation mode if rain and be dancing if it’s snow. Weird.
Well, they are calling for rain, snow and ice. Guess they wanted to cover all the bases. It is supposed to be VERY windy.
I now know how to start the generator if the electricity goes, and what switches to flip on the fuses so they go from the grid onto the generator. On the other hand, I can’t lift the ten gallon gas container to put more gas in it. More thinking should have gone in to that one.
I’m off to find out if beavers hibernate . . .
8:21 pm on December 11th, 2010
Hmm. Beavers do not hibernate. Dang blasted. BUT, they work all fall getting a food cache underwater near their lodge.
Well, that one I’m well aware of. Apple trees are not some of their preferred food. You could have fooled me on THAT one.
Lord knows how many beavers are in the den. They have babies in March or April, between 4 and 9, and the kids stay around until they get thrown out on their own around the age of two.
And they are BIG. Not as big as Newfs but 60 pounds is nothing to sneeze at. So we will be keeping the metal skirts on the trees for some time. Years probably.
8:25 pm on December 11th, 2010
Yes, Barb, be very careful going outside. Your forecast sounds brutal.
Melanie, maybe you can get the guy that helps out with chores around the house to do something about the 10 gal. gas can.
8:28 pm on December 11th, 2010
Melanie: Can you tip the ten-gallon container so that you can pour part of it into another container?
We’re supposed to be getting four to six inches of snow. The problem is that some of the time rain will be mixed in. Yuck!
B&M: Let me know how you like that movie. I have selected tons for my “queue.”
8:34 pm on December 11th, 2010
BStover, The job starts in late January and ends on April 15th. I am a receptionist in the office. Do you need another hint?
Rio, Alice gets to go to the party with the hypnotist as a professional courtesy. Heh
Mr Husky, Here are some pictures from today. First one is in the morning when we only had about a foot of snow. That is AbbietheKitty keeping an eye on everything.

8:37 pm on December 11th, 2010
This one is from about 1 in the afternoon. That tiny person is Dawson shoveling. That thing on her back that looks like her hood has blown off her head is her elbow just starting a big scoop.
She shoveled off and on all day and the wind blew it all back.
8:42 pm on December 11th, 2010
Do you notice how much higher the snow is on the porch roof in the second picture. It is about 18 inches there.
Now that window has a triangle of snow from the upper right of the window down to the middle of the left side and it is completely up against the window. Not a lot of light can get through now.
Here is the backyard earlier in the day.

The garage has a lot more snow on it now. I am not sure how much snow they say there is here, but it is a lot. I am thinking we got every bit of the 20 inches which was the high end of the estimate.
8:49 pm on December 11th, 2010
We have lots of snowmobilers going by here tonight. Those guys are crazy! Barb is sitting on the sofa watching “It’s A Wonderful Life”, with an afghan wrapped around her.
She also just read a Debbie McComber Christmas book. She writes feel good holiday books, so it is the season!
Staff, love the snow pictures. Thank goodness we are not getting that much!
8:50 pm on December 11th, 2010
It’s okay with me if that doesn’t happen here. I mean it will at some point this winter, but I would prefer it later in the season.
Two or three years ago we had a 27 inch snow fall in one night. It was the last weekend in March . . . It melts faster than. Thoughout most years we have at least 3 feet of snow on the ground at all times.
Barb & MagPie: Hope your internet continues through out the storm.
B.Stover: Don’t worry, I can always come up with something about the gas containers. Not usually the easiest thing, but at least inventive and humorous.
May I suggest Lie To Me? Tim Roth is a good actor. We are on Season 2 right now..
Also A Touch of Frost and The Last Detective Both are very good BBC series. All Watch Instantly.
GO DAWSON!
8:50 pm on December 11th, 2010
http://www.startribune.com/
There is a link to a storm photo gallery on the front page here. Some of them are really people sitting inside at the airport which I do NOT consider a storm picture. Sniff
8:51 pm on December 11th, 2010
That is really a good picture of Abbie and the snow. She looks very cozy. Dawson looks lost out there. I think you guys should get one of those snow blower machines.
Both photos are very pretty.
8:55 pm on December 11th, 2010
I can remember when we first moved here to Western MA (11 years ago), Dan knew we didn’t need no stinking snow blowers!
It was fine during December, but then in January we got hit with storm after storm after storm. He went out and bought one.
The next year he bought a bigger one. Snicker
I love the snow blower. Before last year, I’d take my turn with it. The dogs would come and watch in the play yard. Being me, I would turn the out thingy right towards them. Being them, they had a blast. Zoë would always wonder how the dogs could get that much snow on them.
Snicker
9:01 pm on December 11th, 2010
Staff: You are a receptionist in a CPA firm.
Melanie: I’ve been watching Lie To Me on tv. I really like Tim Roth. Tonight I watched the pilot of the first season again. I’m putting Touch of Frost and Last Detective (which I’ve never seen; is it with….can’t remember his name. He was Robert Hardy’s brother Tristram on All Creatures Great and Small?) on my watch instantly list. Thanks.
9:04 pm on December 11th, 2010
Love all the snow pictures! It isn’t even officially winter yet. It is going to be very cold when this storm passes.
9:05 pm on December 11th, 2010
Abbie, thanks for the link to the sights of the snow storm. What is it about taking pictures of people using snow blowers?
I loved the ones of the dogs in the snow, especially the St. Bernard. He looked so pleased.
I’m glad you are INSIDE! I don’t think even your tail would be seen if you got lost in a drift.
I also like the last picture from a walk near the Lake of Isles, or something like that. Second page.
Well, I must say TTFN, Patsy has been asleep for over any hour and has the bed all warmed up. Thank goodness she doesn’t get under the covers like a certain Pug!
9:06 pm on December 11th, 2010
I’m going to go read. Night all.
9:09 pm on December 11th, 2010
Whoops B.Stover: saw your comment after I refreshed. Yes, he was Tristram. He’s quite a character actor. Not a bit like Tristram. We tried to watch something with the Christopher Timothy (can’t remember what it was) but we were disappointed in his portrayal of the character. He appeared to still be playing James Herriot.
Really TTNF
9:12 pm on December 11th, 2010
That was such a good tv series, sigh…all the actors were great in it and the scenery was to die for.
9:20 pm on December 11th, 2010
Maggie,
Thanks for the hint about Rio’s personality. Yes, Mollypops did tell me the same thing.
I sure he’s a great guy and that I’ll have to pull his chain from time to time to keep him on his toes. As for the ES, is that what you are? I had been thinking from your
picture that you were somewhere in the collie family, but I didn’t know where.
I don’t mean to embarrass you, but you’re one great looking gal.
9:24 pm on December 11th, 2010
We are signing off, too. Hope we will able to talk to you all in the am. Night, all.

Dear TYB, Glad you have surfaced on the blog. You look like a nice dog who would be gentle with us Kats. Stay warm up there in the northeast.
Goodnight everyone. And g’day to LizF, wherever she has gone.

AbbietheKitty,
It was nice of you to write. I want you to know that you are right on in your judgement of me. I am a cat dog. I love you Kats; as a matter of fact, I go to work everyday with my friend and we work in a pet friendly store that has two cats who just happen to be among my best friends. I’d like to be your friend too. Thanks again.
Tyb

Party!… She said she had a great time and was glad the people she went with came home after the raffle!…snort!… She won one of the prizes tonight…Woooo!… She hasn’t opened it yet, because she doesn’t get very many gifts so she will be saving this one to open on Christmas….sneeze!… How sad is that? Her mother said she will get an envelope ($$), her grandma will give her ($$) and her brother and sis-in-law are not exchanging gifts this year…grunt!…Although, if time permits she will be making the photo collage thingy each for them and her mom…sniff!…Tomorrow, she will have all day to finish Grandma’s Quilling and maybe start the photo thingy in between all the other errands we need to run…cough!…Like groceries and my food and my presents and my treats. That sort of stuff…heh!

Tyb!… I was named after the second largest city of Brazil and the third largest metropolitan area in South America, 6th largest in the Americas and 26th in the world… grunt! … Rio De Janeiro!…sniff!
Fringe!… Stover, if you read this you have to know that my friend is winding down from the party and watching Fringe…heh!… I don’t think this will work very well…snort!

Yawn!… Even though I slept a lot today I am ready for bed again…snuff!… She is too I think. We tried to stay up and watch “Holiday Inn”, which we have never seen and now realize we just cannot do it…snort!… So off to bed we go and I am getting on the big bed tonight no matter what…gruff!

Rio,
Thanks for the name info. I had guessed the river, but I’m impressed with all the other connections. You’ve really got the credentials, don’t you. I hope you had a good sleep and are ready for another day. My friend and I went out for our first walk a while ago. The temperature was comfortable, but it was just warm enough to bring rain rather than snow and the walking was really dicey. Slick, slick, slick. By the way, I think my friend saw Holiday Inn a few hundred years ago; he says it’s probably still worth the watch. I hope you get to see it.

[…]certainly like your web-site but you have to check the spelling on quite a few of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling issues and I in finding it very troublesome to tell the truth then again I will certainly come again again.[…]…
