Event Next Saturday
3-5 PM, Osterville Village Library (Mass.), Mystery Panel with Spence, Hank Phillippi Ryan, and Randall Peffer. Also book signing. And paw-printing. (Paw-printing not obligatory, but in all the signings Spence has done only one guy ever said no.)

Three and a half hours away. Except it’s the weekend, so multiply by 2.
Sigh . .
Good Morning All! Here’s a picture and attitude that would not be out of place in this household.
9:17 am on November 10th, 2012
Good morning all. Why would anyone say no to a paw print?
Someone asked last night what movie Barb had gone to see. Lincoln would have been preferred, bu she saw Wreck It Ralph with Baye, Lily and Ben, then met the parents for dinner. Actually the movie was very good and quite entertaining. The special effects were amazing and the story line was cute and upbeat. Barb is not a gamer so she really had doubts, but it was all good.
9:29 am on November 10th, 2012
Why did the guy say no? Have a great time Spence.
Good morning all.
9:39 am on November 10th, 2012
B.Stover,
Last night I started wondering what you are up to now that you are retired. I remembered you were doing some research, but I can’t remember on what. I also remember that you were going to reread HP series.
Wach’ya up to?
9:43 am on November 10th, 2012
That guy should have taken time to paws and reconsider.
Off to start the day’s list of errands.
Barb – are you enjoying being able to hang with the grands anytime you like?
9:52 am on November 10th, 2012
Good morning, All.
Did youse guys read Belly Starr’s comment last night wanting to know why she hasn’t received backpay? That girl is a hoot.
It is raining here, which caught us completely offguard. Meashka and Dima were both in the middle of burying their bully stix for later. Mom made us all come in.
It is supposed to turn sunny and warm. The rents think that is great. Us? Not so much, (whispering) although we did hear a rumor about a hike.
9:58 am on November 10th, 2012
My hunch is that guy regretted saying no to the paw print almost as soon as the word came out of his mouth. Poor sucker.
Melanie: “I’m just as surprised as you are.” Heh, heh, good one.
10:09 am on November 10th, 2012
What’s this? NO paw print? That guy was no friend of Chet INMHO.
Tupper&Gilly: Heh. Like TBS…youse are Very Funny.
No rest for talented authors. OFA is on the road again.

T & G, Yes last night was fun. Next Thursday morning Barb is going to Ben’s “Barnyard Moosical” at his school. Couldn’t do that kind of thing when she lived 100 miles away. As far as babysitting for the little guy, that is a mixed review.
We do have a fun sitting gig coming up – Gus Gus is coming to stay for Thanks Giving. Kelly and group are going out of town for the holiday, so he will be here playing with me for a whole week. Barb will take some pics for youse guys. Hopefully they won’t look anything like the one Melanie posted above.
10:35 am on November 10th, 2012
Good Morning All
Not wanting a paw print…how strange. The guy must have a screw loose.
Autumn has finally arrived here. It is cloudy, cool, windy, and leaves are blowing into my backyard contruction projects. That makes for cozy naps in my holes.
Maybe Rio is getting snow.
10:42 am on November 10th, 2012
Melanie: I did re-read all of the HP novels. I bought the e-editions through Pottermore and put them on my Kindle. I’m researching Van Gogh’s letters to see what he writes about some of his paintings and I’m writing poems “describing” the paintings. There is a great website I’m using along with his published letters. I’m also studying Old English again….It’s been a long time since I took it in grad school. (Actually, I’m very busy now that I’ve retired! I went to campus this past week and the department chair asked me to teach a literature class next semester. I told her I couldn’t because I’m too busy. LOL!)
10:56 am on November 10th, 2012
Off to run errands, do a little grocery shopping, and hit ToysRUs for some gifts. 3/4 done with shopping for Christmas!
May even put up some garland on the front railing later. Or maybe it will be a nap instead. BBL
10:57 am on November 10th, 2012
T&G: “…should have taken time to paws to reconsider.” Don’t you love the English language! I was pondering the word “lead” the other day. The verb and noun are spelled the same but pronounced differently.(“I will lead you to the treasure.” “Lead is a soft metal.”) And the past participle of the verb–led–is pronounced the same as the noun–lead.
Barb: I hope your picture isn’t the same as that post by Melanie also.
11:09 am on November 10th, 2012
We love the picture Melanie posted. If we did that, Barb and Maggie would have to take us in also.
11:17 am on November 10th, 2012
Melanie: I forgot–Another project I’m working on is to compare Satan in Milton’s Paradise Lost with Voldemort. I’ve run into a problem: We know why Lucifer becomes Satan according to Milton (jealousy) but I don’t know if Rowling has given us enough information to know why Tom Riddle becomes Voldemort. Any ideas?
11:37 am on November 10th, 2012
Stover!…Power corrupts…snort!
Event!…If Spencer’s Event is not till next Saturday you’d think he’d have time to write a real post for the weekend….grunt!
12:04 pm on November 10th, 2012
Rio: That is a truism but I think it’s more complex than that. For one thing, how did he get the power?
12:18 pm on November 10th, 2012
Power!…How did any of them get any of their powers?…snort!
12:55 pm on November 10th, 2012
Riözz: Did you finish watching the 3rd Damages DVD last night?
Pretty intense! Whatever will we do when our two favs are gone forever.
12:57 pm on November 10th, 2012
Sorry. Slip of the iPaw. Heh.
1:23 pm on November 10th, 2012
Maskers!…I did. I did! It was excellant. The way the show constantly tricks us with the timing of events never ceases to amaze me..heh!heh!
1:23 pm on November 10th, 2012
My two-legged arrived home late last night an went straight to bed. I did get a good snuggle in this morning.
When she woke up, I asked her about backpay. She said something about needing to find her big DENIED stamp and bright red ink pad to answer my question. I wonder if Wookie’s dad or even Wookie himself to represent me.
I then told my two-legged that I should be paid for my services as a hoot. She said maybe if I were and owl. Humph!
1:27 pm on November 10th, 2012
Belle Starr: I’m afraid your two-legged has been talking to Jasper the poodle’s mom. She knows her rights. You are SOL.
1:39 pm on November 10th, 2012
Rights! What about my wrongs? I want, may demand backpay for my wrongdoings. Staff said sins should be compensated. Staff wouldn’t lie.
1:44 pm on November 10th, 2012
Belly Starr is our hero! Sinners unite! Backpay for all! And a critter in every pot!
1:58 pm on November 10th, 2012
Staff has some ‘splaining to do.
2:18 pm on November 10th, 2012
Bellie!…Get off the computer and go let Rebecca know she should check her SDD asap!…grunt!
3:20 pm on November 10th, 2012
My two-legged ‘splaining is one step beyond explaining and a step just shy of ‘hide until the dust settles or someone else gets in worse trouble.’
Howlers: I’ve had it up to here and I’m not going to take it anymore.
Rio: my two-legged said she checked and responded.
3:37 pm on November 10th, 2012
Snow!…Wow! Its really coming down out there. My friend left to get some project supplies and when she came back it was an outright blizzard…sniff!…without the wind. Just lots of snow and I HATE that stuff..grunt!
3:45 pm on November 10th, 2012
Zoe and I are laughing at the antics of certain members of the blog.
B.Stover, sounds like you are having a wonderful time. I have some ideas about your project, unfortunately I have staked out a corner of the quilt. I am drinking throat coat tea and I have on a certain neck warmer. It has paw prints on the outside and has a purple lining.

For one thing, Tom Riddle is a bully so one would have to examine the psychology of a bully. It’s usually something lacking in the bully. Often it includes lack of self-confidence. In the HP books there is a mirror image of that in Draco.
4:20 pm on November 10th, 2012
Belle Starr. I’d be more than pleased to represent you. I’ll even waive my usual retainer– a case of slim Jim’s — and represent you on a purely pro-bone-o basis.
Wookie
4:23 pm on November 10th, 2012
Bee – if I remember correctly, Tom Riddle feared death (so therefore?) sought immortality. It’s ironic because everyone at Hogwarts lived on, in pictures that appeared to be alive or as ghosts, and dead people showed up at the right time to help Harry.
You’re onto something with the bully psychology.
You mentioned Kate Morton recently. Do you enjoy her books?
Oh, Wookie. Bennett Cerf just rolled over again.
4:26 pm on November 10th, 2012
Law!….Bellie, I can attest to Wookie’s super-duper abilities as a law n’ order guy…sniff!…He got me off on that Licking the World Series Trophy charge and there was even some evidence against me…heh!heh!…I think that disappeared somehow. Anyways, I got off scott-free. Not even a slap on the paw…snort!
4:27 pm on November 10th, 2012
Belle Starr,
I said you should “beware the wages of sin”. Now that means not that you will get paid for sin, but that you must pay for sin. If you have sinned then you owe your two legged, she does not owe you.
I am sorry dear, but you truly do not understand “the wages of sin”. Your two legged will explain it to you. I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for payment. snicker.
Hope that helps.
BStover,
Tom Riddle was an orphan and ‘different’. He felt inferior and weaker early in life didn’t he? He took stuff and bullied his fellow students. He thought he was unwanted and tried to get power by using his mysterious magic to control others. I don’t think he ever got over that earlier feeling of inferiority.
I believe Snape had many of the same feelings when being laughed at in school by Harry’s father and his crowd.
4:46 pm on November 10th, 2012
Bluecat: Voldemort wanted immortality which was the reason he made the horcruxes even though he had to kill to do so. It’s ironic that he made Harry a horcrux without knowing it thereby giving Harry knowledge and power over him. That possibly shows one of the flaws in Voldemort. However, was fear of death the reason that Tom Riddle became Voldemort?
I do like Kate Morton’s novels. I’ve read House at Riverton and Forgotten Garden and am currently reading Secret Keeper. She’s good at developing characters and the mysteries usually involve generations within families.
4:52 pm on November 10th, 2012
Staff: That’s interesting. Harry was also an orphan and unloved by his aunt and uncle. I guess another question would be, why did Harry become a hero and Tom Riddle a villain? It may have something to do with empathy and humility.
5:03 pm on November 10th, 2012
Staff: Another thing is that Snape loved Lily. Tom Riddle/Voldemort never loved anyone. Harry loves Ron and Hermione and also Ginny. Perhaps another answer is love makes one empathetic and less self-centered.
5:26 pm on November 10th, 2012
Yes. Snape’s love was what finally made him help Harry. It is interesting that Harry was able to rise about his upbringing but Tom Riddle was ruined by it. Pondering here.
Harry could love and he could also see the humor in his situation. Tom Riddle never thought anything was funny as far as I remember. I have always thought the ability to laugh is important, but love is a much more popular plot line.
5:27 pm on November 10th, 2012
‘above’ his upbringing
5:36 pm on November 10th, 2012
Another thought is his disappointment in both sides of his family. Riddle’s father refused to acknowledge him and his mother’s family (the last of Slytherin’s line) were (to put it lightly) completely bonkers.
Whoops, dinner is ready. BBL
5:54 pm on November 10th, 2012
These are great ideas guys. Thank you.
5:57 pm on November 10th, 2012
We are jumpoing into the conversation late, but here’s our take on it.
Muggle Riddle Sr was enchanted by a love charm and married Tom’s magical mother. However, the charm wore off, Sr took one look at who he was married to and ran. Mother Riddle died soon after, leaving Tom to feel abandoned and abused. Add to that his innate natural strong magic talent, an overwhelming inferiority complex due to being a “mud blood” and whammo – you got a malevolent nut-burger with a grudge against the world and a need to dominate and control it.
Snape also is half muggle and arguably very magically talented. Plus he was a natural bully magnet in school, which made him a cynical and angry adult – especially when confronting a full blood like Harry, but also when faced with an equally talented half blood like Hermione. He shows great animous to her, but pretty much ignores Ron, Shamus, Neville and other less stellarly talented kids.
Draco is the flip side of Harry – born of two magical parents, very naturally talented, but with no social filter or sense of community. Harry is basically altruistic and sees his talent for what it is – a gift that came to him through non of his own doing. Draco on the other hand takes advantage of those less talented, is selfish and cowardly in the face of a real challenge.
We have often wondered if Rowlings was writing an alligorical paean to defense against bullies, or if she just set out to write a really good story that kids could relate to. After all, who doesn’t know a bully, a loyal friend, a super smart peer, an accident prone klutz and someone who tries so hard, but just can’t seem to get it right.
So, thats our take and we’re sticking to it.
6:08 pm on November 10th, 2012
Potted!…I don’t think we ever finished watching the whole series…gah!…Just remembered that right now. Must get it in our Netflix queue asap!…gruffle!
6:18 pm on November 10th, 2012
Granted. Milton’s Satan was an angel before he rebelled. So hero to anti-hero? Perhaps, Slytherin is a type of Satan. He was part of the four top wizards in England before he left (rebelled?). There are some who “worship” him.
Anyhoo, need to eat some ice cream and get back under the quilt.
Not sure if I’ll be back. If not? TTFN
6:22 pm on November 10th, 2012
Thank you T&G. (Hermione is a “mudblood” since neither of her parents are wizards.)
Another thing is that Harry doesn’t keep the Deathly Hallows. He drops the stone and, as I recall, puts the Elder wand back in Dumbledore’s casket. (I actually prefer the film version: He breaks it in half and throws the pieces into the valley.) He does keep the invisibility cloak. This shows, I think, that he has no desire to be invincible.
6:46 pm on November 10th, 2012
Stover!…What will you do with all this research? …sniff!…Are you trying to get it published? Have you ever had anything published?…snort!
6:53 pm on November 10th, 2012
Rio: I don’t know about publishing until I see the final product. I’ve had poems published.
7:36 pm on November 10th, 2012
Poetry!….Stover are your poems long or are they short?…sniff!
7:37 pm on November 10th, 2012

Hitchcock!…Stover, I seem to think I remember you said you had never seen The Man Who Knew Too Much..snort!…It is ON DEMAND and we are going to watch it (again) right now…heh!…It is well worth your time if you have never seen it before…chuffle!
7:49 pm on November 10th, 2012
Staff: I think I like it much better before you explained the wages of sin. I think I’m going to hide until the dust settles or someone else gets in worse trouble. I wonder if I can convice Junior to dot, dot, dot.
Wookie: With Rio’s glowing recommendation, I have no doubt you can clear my good name. I appreciate your offer to do it pro-bone-o because my finances are a mess. I am happy to share Tenzing’s Slim Jims with you and let you borrow my sparkly, pink collar from Wose for a special occassion.
Noswad: My Two-Legged has checked, yeeped, and responded.
7:57 pm on November 10th, 2012
Rio: Thank you. I’ll watch it tomorrow. My poems are short.
8:14 pm on November 10th, 2012
Rio – can we come over for dinner? It’s been kind of a rough day here.
Mama had a whole list of errands, starting with going to the groomer. For her, not for us. And just for the record, we want to know why SHE doesn’t have to get HER nails clipped when she goes to the groomer. Anyway, the groomer was running really late, so Mama got home at quarter to 12 instead of by 10:30
Then, when she walked in the door, Gramp came out and one eye is just swollen and bright red and looks terrible. She calls the eye doctor and gets him right down there. He had developed an allergy to one of his eye drops, and needed a remedy drop. The doctor fixed him right up, and now he is fine.
But the whole day was a blur of running. And Mama kept saying that we would have a pizza from the freezer for dinner since we just couldn’t get home long enough to get something ready.
So, when they finally settled at home and she got her shoos off, she went to the freezer and there was no pizza there. She asked Dad and he said that, sure there was a pizza in there. He went to look, and came back looking puzzled too. No pizza.
So – no pizza. Looks like frozen fish sticks for dinner. Who even HAS frozen fish sticks in their freezer anymore?
harumph!
8:24 pm on November 10th, 2012
Buuurrrrpp!…Wow! That homemade pizza was great!….snort!… Me and Beau got our fair share and then I got some more…heh!…Fish Sticks? Even the words have not been spoken around here for years and years…heh!heh!
8:29 pm on November 10th, 2012
Now!…Back to The Man Who Knew Too Much…Wooooo!
8:39 pm on November 10th, 2012
The rents just got home from their favorite restaurant. We didn’t even get a doggie bag. 🙁
Ready to watch the Irish kick some BC butt (we hope). We owe them.
9:03 pm on November 10th, 2012
We had cream of wild rice stuffing soup. Dawson had left some wild rice/sausage dressing in the freezer so we pretended it was all wild rice and made soup. It was darn good. Even Dad ate some and there was no bacon in it.
Fish sticks. Yuck.
9:18 pm on November 10th, 2012
Mom (Maggie) used to feed us fish sticks. Every once in awhile I crave them but they do not taste good like they used to when I was young.
9:29 pm on November 10th, 2012
Fish sticks? What are fish sticks? We get frozen fish from time to time. Jackson, or Action Jackson as my Two-Legged sometimes calls him, likes to bury fishheads in the straw in his house, lay on it, let it sour and then eat it. Me? I like to nibble on the fish saw dust right of the ground.
9:32 pm on November 10th, 2012
Fish!…Sawdust!…Gah!…spit!…phooey!…Fish at its best is not for me. Steak, now thats another story all together…chuffle!
9:37 pm on November 10th, 2012
Rio: I’ve conned my Two-Legged out of a steak more than once. And, she’s been known to give Tenzing all of the meat out of her favorite sandwich many times. She says it has something to do with ‘the look’ that she can’t resist.
9:40 pm on November 10th, 2012
Looks!…I don’t have a “look” that is cute or irrisistable…grunt!…I rely on my relentless annoying yeep-filled begging technique…heh!heh!
9:43 pm on November 10th, 2012
I have yet to master the yeep-beg combo. I think I almost have it, but my Two-Leggeed seems immune to it.
Where is Wose?
9:48 pm on November 10th, 2012
Immune!…Well, my friend is totally immune to our tag-team yeep!yeep! begging. Luckily for us her mother feeds us when we look bug-eyed at her..heh!heh!
9:50 pm on November 10th, 2012
Beggin’!…Add in the yeep!yeep! begging and we get way over 50% of what we should be getting…chorkel!burp!
9:50 pm on November 10th, 2012
Wose: If you are out there, a couple of days ago you expressed some concern at not being part of the Kennel and lacking a proper nickname. Posh! There is much debate as to a suitable nickname for you. Half the Kennel likes Rambling Rose and the other half is leaning toward Wambling Wose. With the undecideds, it is still too close to call. Until then, you are welcome to use the default name our Lady gives us when we’re pups and we haven’t told her our names yet—Poopsie McPoopsalot. Our Lady says the default nickname is not proper and we better decide in short order. Short? Heh. We’re two of the tallest dogs in the kennel.
10:00 pm on November 10th, 2012
Rose!…A nickname for our Rose….heh!…. I do like Ramblin’ Rose as she will be rambling on up North to Alaska soon…wooo!…But not before the Holiday Boutique and the Holiday Auction occur…snort!…So please remember to get your photos in to be wonderfluffed by Melanie as soon as possible for both of these events!…chuffle!…Much remodeling is being done by Rebecca to get the Store ready for the Grand Ole Opening. The Auction Block will be buffed out by the Giant soon, very soon…wheeze!!

Iditarod Opportunities!
🙂 The Raven, aka Dan the Man Memorial Iditarod Checkpoint! 🙂
A checkpoint has been reserved for Dan Montague in the 2013 Iditarod.
If you want to donate to this checkpoint please email dawson.j2@gmail.com with the amount then send that amount to Rebecca via paypal or snail mail, dog team or however…I will let you know when the checkpoint is fully funded.
I don’t want to discourage large donations but I’m thinking to keep the donations in the $10 range to allow everyone a chance to be included.
If you would like to donate a larger amount then you might think about putting your name on a checkpoint.
This will warm you all up for the coming Auction!

Excellent post. I’m dealing with a few of these issues as well..
