Even More Background

“Oops,” says Bernie. “We forgot to look this over yesterday. It’s from B. Stover. And speaking of B. Stover, I wonder what she’d think of the misuse of ‘begging the question’, just everywhere these days. Came across it last night in The Voice, the new Sinatra bio I was otherwise enjoying.”

Begging? Begging for treats is bad. I know that very very well and would never ever do it intentionally.

From B. Stover:

1. Col. Bob met his son, Ray Jason, after Ray followed him in his car. This was in Bakersfield. Col. Bob gave Ray $300 from his ATM. We don’t know what either said to the other except that Ray hates Col. Bob.

2. Astrid is missing and according to Bernie, Ray is also missing.

3. For some reason (a “hunch”?) Bernie thought that he could get info on Astrid from Albie Rose in Vegas and he goes there and questions Albie. Albie wants to hire Bernie, who will have none of that. Albie was married to Tiffany who changed her name from Ethel which was an alias for Astrid. Foster first saw her at a show as Ethel the Ready. Albie is very jealous, asks why Foster knew Tiffany 3 was really Ethel. Albie was married eight times.

4. Foster, dressed in all black, comes to Bernie’s house. He wants to sell Bernie information about Astrid; he knows nothing about Ray. He does not want to work for Albie any longer and has a new gig in LA. He says that Astrid/Tiffany 3 liked Albie and that Albie was wrong about the other dude.

5. Bernie and Chet are meeting with Foster in an unfinished housing development somewhere, I think, in the desert near Vegas. The housing development for some reason has windowless houses. Foster trusts Bernie and I think Bernie feels sorry for Foster.

6. Bernie has not told Foster or Albie who his client is. He has given Foster $1.000 and we will apparently learn next what Foster knows, probably a very tenuous assumption.

    Did we need more background?

Begging the question–the Aristotelian logical fallacy? It’s an assumption of truth without proof. One assumes as a premise the conclusion one intends to prove.

I don’t know in what way it’s being misused. Do we have begging of the question in the Astrid case? I think I’m getting a headache.

  2. B.Stover
    9:47 am on December 3rd, 2010

Here’s the classic example used to explain begging the question (from Richard Whately’s Elements of Logic, 1826):

“To allow every man unbounded freedom of speech must always be, on the whole, advantageous to the state; for it is highly conducive to the interests of the community that each individual should enjoy a liberty, perfectly unlimited, of expressing his sentiments.”

The premise (words before the semicolon) are Anglo Saxon words. The conclusion (words after the semicolon) are Norman words. For example, “freedom” is derived from the Old English freodom; “liberty” is from the Middle French derived from the Latin libertas. They are synonyms. The premise and conclusion say exactly the same thing using different words.

And I haven’t even had a cup of coffee yet.

There’s a problem with Astrid and Tulip being the same person. Ray knows what Astrid looks like even if Bernie doesn’t. The first time we have Ray and Tulip together is the post of August 2. Chet and Bernie are in the Porche driving to Tulip’s motel room. Ray and Tulip are in her car. (I’ll copy and paste that post if anyone wants it but you can type “Tulip” in the search box and get to it.) The next time they are together is the August 10 post after they see that Astrid’s suitcases are missing. Tulip’s car won’t start; Ray fixes it and drives back to town with her. Bernie says something about surprises…meaning he thinks Tulip is “interested” in Ray. I don’t think we’ve seen Tulip since then.

I’m going to the doctor again this afternoon…still not breathing right. She’ll check for asthma.

The reason I’m saying this is because when going to her office I travel a road that I don’t use frequently. All along that road are for lease and for sale signs of small businesses that are no longer there. Scary.

She’s baaaaccckkkk! She’s also very happy and quite teary-eyed over your thoughts, concern and prayers during her interview today. Mom says the interview was very comfortable. She met with the hiring manager and her boss, the HR director. The questions were primarily about how mom would manage the work load, and fit in the department. Mom says she is one of 4 applicants who are in final consideration for this job. They are expecting to make a decision by the end of next week. So, for now we are in a wait and see mode. Me? Hey y’all! I finally got Dad to turn on the computer for me! We heard from Mom — the surgery went very well, but lasted from 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon until almost 7 o’clock last night. I don’t know how long that is, but Mom seemed to think it was a long time! The doctor said that Grandpa’s leaky valve wasn’t as leaky as they first thought, so they didn’t have to replace it. But they did have to more than three bypasses. Mom called it a quadruple — whatever that is. She got to see Grandpa this morning, and he seemed to be in really good spirits, although he is in some pain. All three of my uncles are there, and my grandma, so the room was pretty full. Grandpa is still in intensive care, but they’ll move him to a regular room as soon as one opens up. Thanks for all your good thoughts for Grandpa!

I’ll try to get back on here later, but when you have to depend on others, it’s not easy!!!

Rio – Toffee is sort of a crunchy carmel. I make mine with Danish Creamery butter and sugar and vanilla. Topped with milk chocolate and toasted almonds. I’m sure you’d like it, but it wouldn’t help your waistline any!

LizF – how much would it cost, anyway? Millions?

Yea, Jasper’s mom! And Kirby, I’m glad your grandpa is doing better!

Melanie: The steroids helped but they were low mgs. (20) and for ten days. She put me on a different steroid: Methylprednlsolone. Over five days you take six pills, then five, then four and so forth. She also put me on more antibiotics so that the pneumonia doesn’t come back. Also an inhaler (Flovent) that I have to take for one month. There’s also an inhaler for an asthma-type attack. I feel like a pharmacologia.

Mollypop, TYB is a very handsome guy, but do they know for sure that he is BC/Huskey mix, or is that a guess? Just asking because he looks an awful lot like an English Shepherd, and often in rescue, they are mistaken for “Border Collie mixes”.

They come in a sable and white coloration, like TYB, as well as a few other combos. Also, ES tend to be calmer than their cousins, BCs and Aussies.

Molly!…Why would I want to be special friends with some guy I’ve never even met?…grunt!… He could really rub me the wrong way and things could get ugly…cough!….What’s with his name, Tibe, long I? I thought Tib, short I sounded a lot better for a guys name….snort!… I might end up calling him Tide by mistake…sniff!

You rock Jasper’s Mom – the fact that you are in contention (the Final 4 – big stuff in college hoops) is just fantastic. I know from periods of job hunting that sometimes finally being back in contention rather than feeling like no one is able to see all your excellent qualities gives you the positive momentum to secure a great job at last!

Does anyone watch “The Fashion Show”? I don’t know what channel or if that’s the correct name, but YSAS sort of knows one of the contestants.

That person works at the place where YSAS gets his morning coffee. Though the show is wrapped, YSAS does not know the outcome yet. He did see the contestant and said Hi.

Whoops, just your comment Dawson, when mine went up . .

I don’t know. He did a piece on being 80 years old that was really funny and touching. Perhaps I’ll ask him if I can put that up in a serial on the family log. Then I could have a break in January. I’ll have to ask him what he’s thinking of writing, but first I’m going to get something he can write on!

I don’t get it either Rio – I have always assumed that ‘begs’ in this case is just a synonym for ‘asks’. It could be worse – I used to work for someone who always said ‘beggars the question’!!

Wolfie – i don’t know, it could be millions! it sounds delumptious – and possibly quite heavy.

G&BB – the book is on the Borders Australian site, but the National library of Australia (the publishers) is a small boutique publisher. The author and book have a website, by the way.

Begging the question, in our opinion, is like ignoring the question, or not answering it. “Your answer, ‘you are quite witty’ begs the question, ‘do you think I am handsome?’.
