English Setters: Extinction?

“Here’s something from  the BBC – ” Spence begins.

“The Beeb!” says Admin.

“I’m sorry?”

“That’s what the Brits call it – the Beeb.”

“And do Canadians call the CBC the Ceeb?”

“I don’t know,” Admin says. “Canadians maybe once were sort of Britty but I don’t think they are now.”

“Back to the article. It seems that the English setter and some other native UK breeds are threatened with extinction, surpassed in popularity by other breeds.” He glances at Admin. “Especially breeds favored by celebrities.”

Admin – what’s the human expression? takes the bait? “Celebrities? Just because some vacant botox-face sports something means other people are suddenly panting for  it? I’d want the very opposite!”

Spence thinks that over. “What’s the opposite of Prada?”

“What the hell is Prada?”

The English Setter is a good looking dog. Nice head, strong body and sounds the breed has a good personality.

In fact, when I think about it, the English Setter sounds much better than most of our human “celebrities”!

Anyhoo, I looked up the opposite of Prada and found one article that said Versace “… is the polar opposite to Prada …” There. I have no idea what any of that means.

According to that article, Huskies are an “in fashion” breed. So are Corgis.

    Good morning all.

Since Prada is very expensive and shee-shee, I would think Walmart might be the opposite. One is expensive designer, the other, not even close.

Good morning all. Barb was starting her pot of split pea soup when she got a call from Lisa, the other “secretary” at the CLL. Her kid is sick, so Barb is there today. No soup.

For almost 6 years Barb has asked CL to call her “Office Assistant” but she always says “This is one of my sec-a-taries”. Old dogs can learn, but evidently old CL’s can not.

I wear Prada. Later today, I will put on my 15-year-old Prada coat and go out and run errands. Last year I had to repair a seam in the lining, but that’s it. It’s just a good as the day I bought it.

English Setters are lovely dogs. We like most kinds of Setters -Gordons are gorgeous too.

The opposite of Prada? hmmm – we’ll go along with Barb. Wally brand birks work just as well and you can bling them up with a glue gun and stuff from the fabric store. We did that once, and everyone asked Mama if her s h o e s were by Vera Wang.

And Barb – tell your CL that according to the latest government survey, Secretaries make a minumum of $2 MORE an hour than Office Assistants, so if you are her Sec-a-tary, you want a raise. Betcha she starts calling you an office assitant REAL fast. (of course this is a total fabrication, but it doesn’t sound like your CL is smart enough to look into it)

English Setters are very nice dogs. Mom’s folks had one once. She was “dumped” on them by a neighbor down the street who didn’t take good care of her.
It is totally depressing to learn that Huskies are becoming fashionable. People will be sorry and the Huskies will end up in rescues, if they are lucky.

The Iditarod saved the Alaskan sled dog from becoming more or less extinct. Alaskan people were replacing the sled dog with snowmachines and then the Iditarod Sled Dog Race was begun and people got interested in sled dogs again.

I found that program, Devil’s Graveyard, by following Rio’s instructions. I watched it with a notepad close by. Here are the figures:

4 out of every 1000 Alaskans go missing every year.
That is a 1500% higher rate of disappearances than average.

heh heh heh – Mama just sold the lankety lank couch that could not be sat upon.

She put an ad in the paper for 6 days – today was the last day of the ad, and brrrriiing -there goes the phone. Yup we still have it. Yup it is sage green. Sure you can come see it tonight.

Young girl, no bigger than a twig comes with her (big) dad. She is setting up her first apartment, has always wanted a sectional and ,loves the color. She sits down on it and barely dents a cushion. She’s in love – and the sofa loves her back. Daddy buys her the sofa – especially since we were throwing in the coordinating throw pillows.

Bye bye sectional sofa – hello garage space.

And now, we have to say bye bye too. Maa has to get up at 4:30 to open CLL by 5:45, so she says we have to go to bed RIGHT NOW.

We just Googled David Rosenfelt. No wonder Wookie likes the guy! He loves dogs, and especially Goldens. The dog in his first Andy Carpenter book is named Tara. She must have gone over the Bridge, because that book was written about 10 years ago. Sooo, he and his wife have started a rescue for dogs, mostly Goldens and named after Tara. They have rescued over 4,000 dogs and currently have 27 living with them. Mostly Goldens, and a few others that were too old or had other issues and couldn’t be adopted out. What a guy. We love him! Also, he and Spence have gone to some of the same book signing places. Wonder if they know each other?

There are ten books in the Andy Carpenter series, so that will keep us busy for awhile.

I am heading into 3 days of -50 and -55 weather. Found out today that two families of students at school have been w/o heat for awhile due to financial difficulties. So shocking to learn–we can’t do anything if we don’t know about it. Please, everyone, reach out and ask for help if you need it– and help if you hear of problems. No man is an island and we all need each other.

Caught up on 2009 and 2010 taxes and am getting refunds for both years. So maybe no more notices from the IRS–just checks 🙂

January & February are the toughest months of winter and I, too, have the winter doldrums like Dawson. It makes work/life difficult but I always think that I survived today and tomorrow will be better. Having three animals to pet helps also.

Rio, don’t worry about me. I’ve had lots of winters up here. Yes, I am looking at other places to live but no major changes right away. WA and KY are tax friendly states for retirees. This site has a lot of good links to explore if anyone is interested:

CHarris: Yikes! Families with no heat in -55 temps. How can they survive is what we are wondering.
Good to hear you are finished with those tax returns and are getting a refund too. Excellent news!

Staff: Nice picture of the Northern Lights.
Abbie: You are making me sleepy.

Off to catch up on shows we missed over the past week. Will talk to you all tomorrow – Bear

Now that we know the situation, we can help these families. There are always people who can fix furnaces or help with fuel. As a single woman I have extra space in my house and a family can come here if needed and I’ve already let the school counselor know that.

The families probably lived in one room around a stove or electric heater. Some people block off rooms in freezing weather to save on the cost of heating a whole house. As a young girl I remember people coming to Alaska and living in tents for a year while they got jobs and built an abode. A small place and a source of heat = survivable.

We have been working on the 100+piece Abbie for two nights now. We hope to have her back together soon.

Dad accidentally put an extra 0 in our income for last year and did not notice until he figured out that we owed $345,767. Double yeep! Now fixed, we get money back. Grr…dad should have left a month sooner. We got into a new bracket this year.

Macy the Min-Pin: it takes two brains to work on taxes. The tax guy was so tired that he made errors which I caught. Of course, the computer program helps since at the end it notes anything that is “off.” I am glad you didn’t owe $345,767 🙂
