Elephants (More)

Admin: since the Tennessee Elephant Sanctuary came up last week, here’s a little bit from To Fetch A Thief:

I ran onto the loading dock. Still some light left and I could see Peanut clearly. She was on the ground, walking toward the perp’s old – what was the word? – jalopy. That was it. She walked over to the jalopy, lifted one of her huge round feet and stomped down, crushing the whole front end. Why? I had no idea, but I liked it, liked it a whole lot. Then Peanut raised her trunk high and blew a beautiful trumpeting sound up toward the darkening sky. I loved that trumpeting sound – as good as Roy Eldridge or better – and was hoping for more, when the baboon blew right by me with a whoosh of air, flew out into the night and disappeared from view, although not before I saw that he had the sombrero.

I jumped down onto the ground and went over to Peanut. This was the Peanut Case, meaning she was my responsibility. First I had to get her attention. That probably meant waiting until she’d finished crushing the jalopy’s back end. It didn’t take long.

Ya gotta love Peanut! Didn’t she end up down their in the Tennessee sanctuary too?

    Good morning all.

Watched Once Upon a Time last night. Enjoyed it, but not sure yet if we will follow it.

Watched about half of True Grit and turned it off. Acting was excellent, but just coudn’t get in to it. Westerns are not our favorites venue.

What a great way to start a morning! Crushing a Jalopy. I also loved when Chet was trying to “herd” her.

Patsy finally fell asleep. Thank Dog.

The polar bears are not to be found this morning. And one camera is down. Churchill’s weather is 30 degrees F Wind 28 mph, light snow.

Ours? Will be in the 50’s today.

Masquers: are you keeping your eye on the possible storm in the Atlantic? Might come up the coast. Two of my weather sites are calling for opposite weather on Veterans Day. Should be interesting.

oooo – Barb – you have our deepest sympathy. No pun intended. ICK!

Insurance guy has come and gone. Yikes! He was up on the roof and all over the place. We had no idea it was as bad as all that. Looks like the house is going to be under construction for a while. Thank goodness it was originally built by a rather excentric paranoid guy who way overbuilt. That was what saved our Gramp the Night The Tree Came Down.
And he says we have really dumb neighbors whose trees are threatening more of our property. So the next person is the tree guy who will walk the property line and point out what trees constitute a hazard.

So, exactly whose idea was it to have this freak snowstorm in October. We would like to have a word with them.

Hello Plunderers! So far, we only learned the fate of one of our purchases. So we aren’t quite sure how much of the money we swiped from Mom remains.

T&G, our hearts go out to you for the pain you’ll have to endure with all of those repairs. As much as we suffer for any trees that have to lose their life, we hope your neighbors see the necessity of taking the steps needed to prevent a similar occurrence.

Barb: Please put down that awful drink and check your SDD.

Royals, Did the insurance adjustor have any opinion on whether you can look to your neighbor’s ins. for reimbursement? Did you tell him that this is the 3rd occurance? Establishing a pattern of damage could help your cause.

I hope Molly is hearing all this talk about her being so fierce. Except for the fuzzbutts and two men, she was a big marshmallow.

One of the men came to our front door and knocked on the open and locked screen door. Molly flew at the door with fangs flashing (I had a side view) and, thankfully, the door held. The man, on the other hand, almost had a heart attack.

The other man was in our house installing TV cable and needed a part. I went to a nearby hardware store to get it. While I was gone, Molly wouldn’t let him move from where he was standing. When I came back, Molly was all friendly and wanted him to pet her.

Maggie, Checkpoints are run by the Iditarod Trail Committee and are spaced all along the Iditarod trail. They are staffed by volunteers. All mushers and teams have to stop and sign in with a volunteer at official checkpoints. The checkpoints are one of the safety precautions along the Iditarod trail to keep the mushers and dogs safe. I know one thing they do at checkpoints is check to make sure the musher has all his required survival equipment in his sled. It is a musher’s choice whether or not he/she wants to get through the checkpoint as quickly as possible and keep on racing or elect to use the checkpoint to rest and and feed his dogs. It is at checkpoints where the mushers will find vets for their dogs. Dogs are “dropped” at checkpoints and flown back to Anchorage if the musher thinks they need to stop racing for one reason or another. Most checkpoints are found at tiny Alaskan villages along the Iditarod trail. Some of them even cook up hot food for the mushers, but the musher always feeds and beds his dogs down first.
Rebecca can come along and add to this if she wants to, or I’ll try to answer any other questions.

Barb, Good Luck tomorrow ! I know you will be all glad when it is over. Plan something realyy good to eat when it is over with.

Stover. My dad says thank you back. As regards the Concord Free Public Library, he said it was a truly magnificent structure. Multiple levels with multiple rooms and book cases everywhere, the way he thinks public libraries used to be back in the day. He was also very impressed by the “literary spirit” in Concord. The event that Spence spoke at is actually a multi-day festival that Concord holds every year, with authors from various genres speaking at different venues throughout the town. Most events are free, although a couple each year (like a breakfast with authors) are pay events. Wookie

Siber, So the checkpoints are about every 50 miles approx? I have seen pictures of the dogs being bedded down and being fed at those spots, but didn’t know details on how they work.

One of Barb’s friend is taking her (p/u time 6:00 a.m.) and will wait at the hospital and bring her home. If Barb is feeling up to it they will go out to lunch, however, last time she just got a quick burger at a drive-thru then came home to nap. Siber, you and Rio would love this place she wants to go. It is called Pancho and Lefty’s and is tex-mex at its finest. Small, not fancy, but food is top notch, very fresh ingredients and yummy. The owners are the former chef and nanny for Ben Affleck and Jennifer Gardner. Last time Barb ate there, the owner walked in with her dog and took her to the back office while she worked.

  39. Siber-H
    5:15 pm on November 7th, 2011

Barb, 50 miles appears to be a good average. I see one that is a little over 100 miles and another one at 90 miles.
Some mushers choose not to rest and feed the dogs at checkpoints. They just quickly check in and out and go on down the trail to eat and rest where it is more peaceful.

Barb, You may not want to put Tex-Mex into your system tomorrow, but it sounds yummy. Love the name Pancho and Lefty…one of our favorite Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard songs.
We like Tex-Mex as well as NM food. This is making me hungry.

The stuff you have to drink is much better- however, you do have to drink 12-8 oz. glasses in 3 hours! I am starting my first glass, so will be leaving you guys before too long. Will be spending most of the evening in the “necessary room”.

And it is NOT bogus tex-mex! Fly out here and we will go to Monroe, Wisconsin for you to try it out. Barb will even treat. You can fly from Denver to Rockford, easy flight. Don’t even have to go to O’Hare.

    DAWSON!! Welcome back!

Barb – thinking good thoughts for you. We’ve been there – twice. First time was awful – seems that Mama is immune to the meds they use during the “proceedure” She kept telling the people that she was in pain, that the meds weren’t working. They would make soothing noises, and say that Mama wouldn’t remember a thing.
Later, when the doctor and nurse came to check in on Mama, she told them EVERYTHING that they had been talking about in the room – their diets, what kind of beer they prefered – everything.
The doctor then apologized, and said that there are few rare folks immune to versaid (sp?) and apparently Mama was one of them.
    Gee thanks.
So, the next time, they just put her to sleep. She liked that method a whole bunch better.
Sorry – not trying to be scary – we know you will be fine. And hungry.

Barb – there is a little known conspiracy – as soon as a person CAN’T eat for diet, medical or whatever reason – the tv knows it and shows every ooey-gooey kind of lucious junk food commercial it can get its dial on.
Get some sleep – it will all be over soon.

Rio – we have been doing holiday dinners for 3 for a couple years. It does still seem kind of hollow and strange. Our Gramp misses the big family gatherings with 30 lb turkeys. But – oh well.

This year, Mama and Dad are actually going to be sitting in a hotel on the holiday – its a show weekend, and set up is Wednesday with the show opening Friday am. They are already planning on going to a movie and having a fridge full of junk food in the room(its got a full kitchen)
Whaddya say you and your friend blur on over to Boston and join us. We’ll bring Zingers….

Rio, Mom says she knows how sad it is when a loved one is missing from a Holiday, but it can be helpful to remember all the wonderful Holidays that were shared with family that is no longer with us. Memories can be a warm way of celebrating what is now a quieter holiday. Mom is thankful for both kinds of Holidays…the busier ones from the past and the ones now where she can drive me to the dog park and stick her nose in a book when she isn’t cooking.
The first Holidays without the loved ones are the hardest.

Tupper!….What is Stinky Mama going to do with Grandpa while they are eating junk food in Boston on Thanksgiving?…..wuffle!… The poor guy just survived a huge limb falling on his bedroom roof, you know …sniff!…I’m not going to let my friend know about your invitation or she will leave me here alone with her mother for Thanksgiving…gasp!

SiberH!….Those guys will be fine…snort!… I’ll keep them busy before, during and after the meal….heh! …They won’t have time to feel sorry for themselves or anything…chuffle!

Barb, Yes, mom will cook but she doesn’t like to cook. My mother is not very domestic, but she does like traditional Holiday dinners rather than going out to eat or to large gatherings at friends’ houses.
Anyway, she has to cook at home so I can get my share of turkey.

Staff: Dawson’s quilt is beautiful! What a wonderful sister you are. Dawson: it is good to hear from you. We missed your posts.

Barb: Hoping the procedure is a breeze for you tomorrow.

Nana was gone all day doing errand after errand. All centered around this morning’s doctor appointment. Snow tires are on, grocery shopping done (praying the power doesn’t go out again), book picked up from the library (A Dog’s Purpose) A quick stop at Jack’s place for a bite, then back home much later than expected. Things not finished? Well, there’s that ballot still sitting on the table that must be posted tomorrow. A certain DVD not watched last night. Time. Seeming to need more of it lately.
I keep telling her…you can do something, but not everything. Does she listen? No.
Will catch up tomorrow. When there is more Time – Bear
