Eighth Teitelbaum Mention
“My son,” Bernie said, “is wearing eye make-up.”
“God almighty, it’s for the camera,” Leda said. “John Wayne wore eye make-up. Humphrey Bogart wore eye make-up.”
“I don’t believe it,” Bernie said.
Charlie glanced up from a sheet of paper he was staring at. “I’m trying to memorize this.”
“Memorize what?” said Bernie.
“His line,” said Leda. “Why are you not getting this?”
All of a sudden it felt like old times. I preferred new times, especially if old times meant going back to the Leda days. In some ways – this occurring to me for the very first time, funny how the mind works – she was like Mrs. Teitelbaum. But unlike Mrs. Teitelbaum, Leda couldn’t drive a stick – would I ever forget the time Bernie tried to teach her – so the earth mover episode would never have happened to us.
“What’s the line, Charlie?” Bernie said.
“Don’t disturb him,” Leda said. “He’s internalizing it.”
“Huh?” said Bernie.

I prefer the new times also Chet.
Good morning all.

Good Morning, B!
I like looking forward, not back.
We here in the Northeast may be getting a whole lot of snow this Friday. Yay!
Good day to everyone!

I could not see Philip’s pictures. 🙁
That’s what I hate about therapy…too much looking back.

Here’s to new times and looking forward! Especially to the Iditarod!

Junior!…And someone else please post a photo of Junior holding back his bark…heh!

Wolfie, it is not just Jem’s nose I couldn’t see…I couldn’t see the other Snowhook doggies either 🙁

Bear: Did you get Josephine Tey’s The Daughter of Time?(I’m reading it again and really like it. I may read some of her other novels again.)
11:26 am on February 6th, 2013
Thanks for posting Philip’s photos because I could not see them either. Staff’s video did work for me.
Stover, Mom is going to start The Daughter of Time as soon as she finishes the book she is reading. We lucked out because that book has been available on Kindle for less than a month.
Good Morning All
11:27 am on February 6th, 2013
Good morning! We here now really like Phillip! What a great guy he seems like.
Now about Leda….no looking back, Chet. Onward! Like the way Snowhook moves. Looking back is bad in our opinion. It is something only 2-leggeds do. We dogs never look back, and we don’t think cats or horses do either. Then again, none of us look forward either. We believe in living the moment. And look how happy we are.
11:28 am on February 6th, 2013
Lance Mackey is running in 17th place in the Yukon Quest with 5 dogs dropped.
Rob Cooke and his Siber team are running 4th from last. This is just fine for a team of rookie Sibers.
11:37 am on February 6th, 2013
Hey Siber, if Rob Cooke can do it, well then so can we. Lets get our own team ready. Do you want to lead? Kat would get us lost, Dima would turn back, and Meash will pull so hard none of us could keep up with her.
(whispering) maybe Whitey-Lance would be Lead Dog? Now, that could be a good time!
11:39 am on February 6th, 2013
B: We are ordering it on Kindle today.
Siber-H: We can post more photos from the Race here for you and Wose. It’s the facebookie factor that is not allowing youse to follow through on Philip’s link.
11:39 am on February 6th, 2013
How funny!

11:42 am on February 6th, 2013
I looked on Amazon and most of Tey’s novels are now on Kindle. (Actually, I have the paperbacks.)
11:44 am on February 6th, 2013
Howlers are making me laugh. “Dima would turn back.”
11:46 am on February 6th, 2013
Bear, thank you for posting those great pictures. Jem’s nose is pretty big, but he has stunning blue eyes. And I love Rio Jr.
11:48 am on February 6th, 2013
I am very proud to be Rio Jr’s sponsor.
11:49 am on February 6th, 2013
Fellow Sibers, Mom says I would not be a good lead dog. The first moose I saw, the whole team would be off like a flash.
Rebecca once told me that they tried Whitey-Lance in lead and he really wasn’t interested. Surely, there are Sibers somewhere that could be our lead dogs. Alaskan Huskies would not work out as lead dogs for us. (whispering) They are too fast.
11:55 am on February 6th, 2013
Mollypop’s Mom, That cartoon is too funny!
Bear, Whatever you think best about posting more photos. Wose and I are enjoying them.

Siber-H: Why are Alaskan Huskies faster than Siberian Huskies?
12:05 pm on February 6th, 2013

Siber-H: Yes, why are the Huskies faster?

Elim & Fritz

12:19 pm on February 6th, 2013
Stover, Alaskan Huskies have been bred with other breeds of dogs, like the greyhound, to be faster than the original sled dogs. They have been bred to be sleeker and have longer legs than us Sibers so they can run faster. Most Alaskan Huskies have Siberian somewhere in their ancestry. You can see the Siberian in Whitey-Lance, but not in Junior. I would be willing to bet that if a DNA test were done on Junior, some Siberian genes would show up.
When the first Iditarods were run, the dogs used were traditional sled dog types that were found in the Alaskan Native villages. The long distance mushers themselves developed the dog that was to become the Alaskan Husky. Many say that long distance dog racing saved the sled dog from going extinct in
Alaska because snow machines were replacing the village sled dogs.
12:30 pm on February 6th, 2013
Thanks, Bear for posting these photos. I love Elim’s smile.
12:40 pm on February 6th, 2013
I also want to add that, in general, long distance dog racing has improved the quality of dog care in Alaska…not that they don’t still have dog welfare problems, just like my state does.
Thanks for more photos, Bear.

12:52 pm on February 6th, 2013
Siber: According to the NY Times article Mr. Staff sent yesterday, some of the mushers are beginning to breed sled dogs with lighter coats that can run in the higher temperatures.
Have you heard anything about this?
12:53 pm on February 6th, 2013
Wookie’s Dad: We all knew what you meant. Heh.
1:03 pm on February 6th, 2013
Siber-H: Thank you. That is very interesting. (Actually, Junior doesn’t look like a Siber to me…probably his coloring.)
Bear: In your 12:11 photo, which is the dog on the right? I really like his face, eyes and ears. (He doesn’t look like a Siber to me either.)
Now I’ll read Wookie’s Dad’s article.

Wookie’s Dad: Interesting link to the House of Grammar. Always interested in such articles here, since this can sometimes be a Challenge for a guy like me.
Latest News from the Post Office! Saturday mail delivery to cease come August. Gulp.

1:31 pm on February 6th, 2013
Masquers, That is news to me about breeding for lighter coats, but it makes sense. Many times the mushers have to worry about it being to warm for the dogs and will take their rest stops along the trail during the “heat” of the day.

This is vhy ve love that Siber H. Not only is he very beautiful, but he is also so smart. Vhat a catch!
2:11 pm on February 6th, 2013
We can’t get over all of the very nice pictures Phillip managed to take. No wonder our team came in near the back. We think Fritz looks very much like a Fritz. No other name would suit.
The fact that sled dogs are being bred for lighter coats is significant in light of the global warming talk.
Siber, we do remember Bella telling us about the time they tried W-L in lead, but it wasn’t that he was not interested. She never really said what calamities he wrought. We here think he would be a really fun leader. And if this dog sledding thing isn’t all about fun, then what good is it? Kat says she will lead alongside W-L. Meash will be a wheel dog. She has brute strength. There is no telling where we will end up or how fast (or slow) we will go. But we are going to have fun by gosh! Anyone else on this here blow want to join us?
2:13 pm on February 6th, 2013
Oh yeah, Dima wants to ride in the sled. But only if there are cushions in there as comfortable as his couch.
2:21 pm on February 6th, 2013
Okay…what am I being blamed for now?
O’Howlers: Like the infamous Whitey-Lance, I have a Free Spirit. It’s difficult for us to remain in fixed formation.
Our motto being: “Not All Who Wander Are Lost”.
2:27 pm on February 6th, 2013
Fellow Sibers, My memory could be wrong, but I think Rebecca said Whitey-Lance just wanted to turn around and come back to the sled for affection.
Anyone can join our sled dog team because as the Howlers said, this is about Fun!!! I can be a wheel dog with The Hot One. I am very big boned. Maybe Natasha could lead if she would agree to wear sled dog booties.
Natasha, Thank you.
I will be back later. Mom is turning off the computer because she has to leave. I am going outside to work awhile.
2:43 pm on February 6th, 2013
We do remember that W-L turned around while in lead. We just assumed that he liked the view back there better than the view out there. We would never question the Almighty W-L’s motives.

New England is getting a lot of snow.

Good Morning All (snicker).
Once again I have proved to myself that I HATE shopping. The only good thing about it was I had my buddies Patsy and Grace with me.
By the way, Grace has decided those blue eyes of Gem’s are just mesmerizing. She has fallen in LOVE. Can’t get her away from the computer for long and when I do . . drool all over the keyboard.
Mattie wants to be the musher of the team. She went to the groomer’s today. Her toenails are polished and her coat is fluffy and warm. She is ready to mush.
3:23 pm on February 6th, 2013
Melanie: We Love Gem too!!!
O’Howlers: New Snow. That’s all well and good…but what about where they REALLY need it…The Iditarod Trail.
3:27 pm on February 6th, 2013
Bear, the Iditarod Trail does really need snow. We are concerned about their lack of snow and their much-warmer-than-normal temperatures.
But, we here in farmland need snow desperately, albeit for different reasons. Farmers depend on heavy snow cover on their fields, because the slow melt allows that moisture to be absorbed into the soil. We have gone too many years without near enough snow.
3:28 pm on February 6th, 2013
Grace would make a fine musher.
3:36 pm on February 6th, 2013
Gah! Mattie, not Grace. Grace would be swooning over those blue eyes and would not be able to keep her eyes on the trail.
3:39 pm on February 6th, 2013
Melanie: Also as I recall, Mattie is a Master of Teleportation, a skill that would be useful on the Trail.
4:13 pm on February 6th, 2013
We like the idea of Mattie as Musher. Tell her whatever happens, keep her paws on the sled! (can we velcro them?)
4:22 pm on February 6th, 2013
Howlers, B and BluKat: Please check your SDDs.
4:47 pm on February 6th, 2013
Mattie is aware that one needs to keep one’s paws on the sled. She has heard us tell puppy owners, “Never let go of the leash!” She is beginning to practice teleporting small things with her. just in case the team needs extra snacks.
Gracie wants to be on Gem’s team. When I told her she wasn’t fast enough . . let us just say that I have to put back the sofas, the chairs, the side tables, The Raven’s tree . . She is faster than I thought, but not Graceful.

Hahahahah – Callie had to go get her “spa day” today…bath and wonderfluffing. Ad she had to get her nails clipped. Hahahahaha. They should be going to go pick her up in a minute.
Hey – wait a minute. We get to go too! We gonna go to the groomer’s to pick up Callie. How come we have to have leashes on if we are just going to pick her up? You don’t think……no, they wouldn’t do that would they? We LIKE the sound of our long nails on the floor.
Noooooo…we dont’ wanna go! Help, help! Nooooooooo!

Love TED talks. That one was great. Will be practicing my Super Woman stance two minutes a day. I will let you know how it goes. Have to find my wrist bands . .

Thanks for the YQ photos, Staff. The nighttime shot is especially kool.

I have been on the Yukon Quest site and it is very interesting. On the live tracking page there is a link at the bottom of the map that you can click on (start replay)and you can replay all the tracking info. The little sled dogs move on the map fairly quickly and you can tell when they go OFF THE ROUTE! Some of them go off the route a good ways.
I wonder if they get penalized for this. The ones I have seen are cutting off quite a few miles. hmmmmmmm. Verrrry Interesting.
11:00 pm on February 6th, 2013
I talked to Dawson tonight. She had a dream today about Dan Kaduce who is mushing in the Yukon Quest. She didn’t tell me WHAT she dreamed about however.
On the Yukon Quest website there is a link for a slide show and they have some really nice black and white photo’s and one is of Dan as he “blows through Stepping Stone” in the night. This is hopefully a link to that page.
