Easy Being Green
Admin, all by himself back home and not on vacation, mows the lawn. Pearl, a very white golden, likes to roll and wriggle around in the fresh cuttings. Here’s a green Pearl.
Welcome Precious, King Henry, tough-guy dude.

Ha, ha. Grass stains are so hard to get out of clothes, I wonder how hard they are to get out of hair.
Siber rescue update: the owner had 70 dogs, housed in pens of 10 dogs each. The Fairbanks rescue said that they would take the 10 pregnant dogs so that they wouldn’t be killed. However when animal control arrived with their poles and nooses, the dogs were so frightened that things didn’t go as planned. One dog went into labor and was not transported. Instead of getting 10 pregnant females, Fairbanks ended up with 4 males and 4 females – one of which died of shock. The remaining dogs are so frightened that no one can get near them. They are small for adult Siberians so I don’t know what the deal is. The process of socialization will take a long time. So Plan B is for Fairbanks to find out what happened to the dog in labor (usually they and the puppies are killed). If they are still in Denali, I will drive down and rescue them. The owner was allowed to keep 19 dogs and they are going to be spayed and neutered. Sad situation.

Pearl reminds me of our blonde haired grandkids after a few weeks of swimming lessons. The chlorine turns their hair that exact shade!
Good morning all.
We are about 3/4 thru Lone Wolf. It is a story more about people than wolves, but there is a lot of very interesting detail about wolves that we never knew. Example: the alpha wolf, usually female, directs the pack when hunting. She can detect a change in the prey animal’s heart rate from quite a distance. She picks the prey, and even if another animal is closer, no one disagrees with her. When feeding, each member of the pack has a set position for dining. Alpha gets the best, beta 2nd best, and so on down the line.

Pearl is our hero! We roll in stuff too, but it never shows on our coats…unless it was something EXTRA odiferous, but then we have to get baths. Yuck
We just got word that Rebecca’s radio talk show interview is confirmed! Either prerecorded on Thursday (if we can get there in time from the airport) or live on Friday morning. But either way – the morning drive time radio will be SNOWHOOK! Woo hoo!
And now, we gotta get back to supervising all the work that remains to be done…..

Speaking of mowing grass, the grass and weeds up here grow so fast since there is 24 hours of daylight. It seems like a never-ending task and one that I do not like. Fortunately, neither dog rolls in the clippings–moose droppings and other icky stuff is their thing.
Thanks everyone for the complements! Sadie is still sleeping but I think she is ok. Breakfast is coming soon so she will be up and going. I am pondering whether to take them on a walk today on the flood plain. They love it but I am the squeamish one. I don’t think my nerves or my wallet could take another attack.
12:49 pm on June 26th, 2012
CHarris, Thanks for the update on the Sibers. That is one tough situation for the dogs and the people trying to rescue them, but bless you all for trying.
Rebecca, I hope you are enjoying your southern food. I hear fried okra calling me right now…mom says I can just keep on dreaming.
Maybe the radio staion will put Rebecca’s interview up on the internet. I hope. Rebecca, you will do fine…more than fine.

CHarris: Now that you’re retired, will you move or stay in Alaska?
1:05 pm on June 26th, 2012
Radio!…I bet she will try and sneak in a pug-joke while she is on the AIR…grunt!
1:49 pm on June 26th, 2012
Bee: My retirement plan was to stay put for a year before making any big moves. I just wanted to enjoy being retired and to enjoy puttering around my house. However, it looks like one of the nearby military bases is going to be drastically downsized with hundreds of personnel leaving in October 2013. If that happens, I might be stuck with a house that doesn’t sell and I am too old to wait out a recovery that might take years. So after Christmas I am going to decide what to do. I do think living in a city and one with four distinct seasons would be ideal but as a life-long Alaskan I would be ok being “stuck” up here.
Rebecca: sending positive energy your way–you will be great. I’ve seen you in action talking to reporters and you know what you are doing. You’ve had a lot of experience giving presentations with your job and for a cause close to your heart, you’re unbeatable.

Golinka!…I think after this off-broadway gig, Golinka should take Rebecca and her One-Woman Show to Broadway…snort!snort!…There’s big money to be gathered up there I betcha…sniff!

Rio – Main St in our encompassing city was originally built to accommodate farmers bringing their huge produce wagons and haycarts to line the street on market day. The street is wide enough for a team of horses with their wagon to be hitched facing in at the curb, on both sides of the street, and still have enough room between the backs of the wagons for other wagons to pass in both directions.
This fact is a source of great historical pride in the Valley, and we lay claim to having the oldest agricultural fair in the entire country starting on that Main St
Hence – many of the locals refer to Main St as “the Broadway”. So Rebecca will be performing in our village about 3 miles up the same road as that Main St. Therefore – Rebecca will indeed be performing just around the corner from the Broadway. And the radio station is actually ON the Main St. So Rebecca will be on Broadway before she goes “off” Broadway.

Audrey, you look beautiful, and green is our favorite color!
C Harris, we missed the beginnings of the Sibe rescue story. Where are they from and are there people taking them? Are you really taking some? Why was the owner allowed to keep any? Why are they so scared?
Will those puppies be o.k.? Thanks thanks thanks for all you do. It seems like
a lot of our kind get abandoned.
There is a wolf or wolf hybrid in one of the parks in Philly. Apparently someone had one illegally and then decided they couldn’t care for him anymore so they turned him loose. At least thats the theory. The nearby wolf rescue is trying to catch him.
T&G, Oley still has an old time country (agricultural) fair. It is a great time, and we have a large fairground where it is held. It is one of the very few real country fair that survives. It is in it’s 66 th year..

OleyHowlers: the dogs are from near Denali. They have never been properly socialized. When Animal Control showed up and began manhandling the dogs with their big poles and nooses, the dogs got very frightened. The 6 flown up here were manhandled into crates for the plane which is added stress plus flying in a small plane–2 others were driven up here. Then they went from crates to dog kennels for transport to the rescue place–they weren’t vicious or aggressive but scared out of their minds. One died of shock shortly after she got to the rescue place. Their pen is very large and encompasses some woods so they hide behind trees when humans arrive. So a couple of volunteers sit/lay in the pen in hopes the dogs will be curious enough to approach and try to smell them. We don’t try to pet them as they are afraid of being grabbed. One volunteer put hot dogs on her legs and one dog approached and took one. The next step is to try and give them meat each night as a treat and build up to hand feeding them meat and ear their trust. (The dogs have buckets of kibble and water available otherwise) Two of the four males are alpha males so we hope we can separate them so they won’t start jockeying for leader of the pack. I just hope they are adoptable at some point. If I can take one of the females home and socialize her and raise her pups, there might be hope. It is discouraging right now. The dog owner was old and at some point things got out of hand. But the dogs were adequately fed and he isn’t a mean person. Today it is raining so I may not go visit them after work tonight. We’ll see.

Greetings all. We would like to ask for a moment of silence please, for a good man has left this earth.
Frank Chee Willeto served this country during World War II as a Navaho Code Talker. He and his fellow young, Navajo warriors left their homes where they were amongst their own people, and went out into the world into a foreign culture, with people who thought they were inferior, to serve a country that had been heartless to their culture and didn’t even give them the benefit of citizenship.
He never talked about that part of it, but talked instead of the pride he and his brothers felt in serving this country well, and doing something that no one else could.
After the war, he returned home, and continued to be a man of honor, serving as a tribal judge, and vice president of the Nation. He was awarded the Congressional Silver Medal last year, and humbly stated that he had only done what anyone else would have done.
He was a good man, and Native people all over the country mourn the loss of a man whose heart knew only the love of his country, no matter what government was in power.
He was a friend and mentor to Leonard, who is feeling his loss deeply. Our backyard prayer at 9 pm tonight will be one of safe and peaceful travels for a good man. Please take a moment to join us, just for a moment, whereever you are.
Thank you.
7:31 pm on June 26th, 2012
Creator, please bless and keep Frank’s spirit and comfort those grieving his loss.

I read about the Navaho Code Talkers when I was a young girl. Their commitment to their beliefs touched my heart.

Amalia, We are so sorry for your loss, the Navajo tribes’ loss and our nation’s loss. The Navajo code talkers were something very special. We couldn’t have won the war in the Pacific without them. I have always admired them so much for being so brave. All of them are heroes.
We will join you in our backyard at 7 our time.
It makes me feel good to know that you and Leonard knew him.

Jerry Seinfeld was tonight’s entertainment for the conference. He was hilarious. My cheeks hurt from laughing, but I tried to say a prayer in my heart for Frank, Golinka and Leonard, the person not the dog. May the latter two and all those who loved Frank feel the quilt around their shoulders. Amazing thing, that quilt.

Peaceful slumbers everyone. Special thoughts for Amalia and Leonard tonight.

Gus and Boo Bear, mom and dad are in Houston tonight. They waved out the window of the hotel but were not sure you saw them.
This afternoon they took a tour of Blue Bell, the Best Ice Cream in th Country. At the end mom got red velvet cake ice cream and dad had key lime pie and blackberry cobbler. Macy got nuthin.
It was109 when they left Brenham then they hit rain and it dropped almost instantly to 81. Then back to 101. All in 30 minutes.
Nitey nite y’all.

Just got home and I am sorry for the sad news. He was truly special. Comfort and peace to both of you and to all who knew him or have heard about him.
10:52 pm on June 27th, 2012
Amalia & Leonard, prayers and good thoughts for your friend on his journey in the next life.
Macy, hope your folks weren’t coming here to cool off. It has been over 100 every day so far this week. Technically, not in a draught yet, but it is drying up fast. Thank goodness we had a wet spring. That helped save alot of trees.
C.Hobbit, add mom to the list of folks wanting your diet info (kmoffett01@yahoo.com). You look fantastic. Hope you are able to work with one of the siber moms and her pups.
Rebecca, good thoughts as your Broadway performance gets closer! Is Coach up in Alaska with AJ?
Wookie, are you feeling okay? You haven’t been as talkative as usual for the past few weeks. Hope you are still feeling tip-top. We consider the information you pass along from your Dad and B’s English and Grammar lessons our continuing education courses.
Melanie, going to send Andrea a commission (probably this weekend for one of her specials)! This is exciting. Maybe you can convince her to donate some type of artwork for the upcoming auction!
Lastly, there is a show on Discover called Flying Wild Alaska that is advertising a show on Iditarod week. Maybe we will see a pink stormy Kromer.
