Dry Gulch (More)

Ray came over to where we were sitting. Human fear has a smell and I was smelling it big time.

“What are you doing here, Ray?” Bernie said.

“My … dad sent me.”

“Colonel Bob?”

Ray nodded.

“I thought you weren’t on speaking terms,” Bernie said.

Ray shrugged. That’s a human thing I always watch for. It can mean a few things, usually not good.

“When’s he coming here?” Bernie said.

“That’s the thing – he got … tied up temporarily. He’d like it if you came to him.”

Bernie gave Ray a long look. “Where’s that?” he said.

“I can show you.”

Bernie nodded. Then he did something surprising: He reached out and unbuttoned the top buttons of Ray’s shirt. I’d seen wires before: that’s basic in this business. Ray was wearing one.

    Holy Moly . .

Wires? Maybe the Detectives in Las Vegas are a "bit" upset with Bernie???

Maybe the detectives are in on Albie's death and that's how they knew to get there?

Good morning, Melanie! I meant to tell you yesterday, I'm glad Dan is home and that his Patriots won. Mom and Dad used to live up in Massachusetts (at Fort Devens), so they root for New England as long as they're not playing the Panthers. (Not that the Panthers have done anything worth rooting about!)

    Good morning, everyone.

This case is taking another strange turn. We here are befuddled!

We saved the last chapter of Dan's book to read today. Barb showed off the autographs Saturday, but it takes some of the fun out of it when the say "What are tin futures" and give you a puzzled look. So many inside jokes on this blog. We sort of have our own language.

Who is he wearing this wire for? Col Bob? The Vegas police? Someone we don't know about…nope not that, that isn't fair.

I'm wondering if Col. Bob is literally tied up. Chet smells lots of fear on Ray. Who else uses wires? I don't think it's the police. And why do "they" want Bernie?

  12. Kirby T. Penworthy
    5:41 am on October 18th, 2010

Was Albie "connected"? Maybe the Mob has Col. Bob "tied up" and Ray's supposed to see what Bernie knows. Although I don't know how concerned Ray would be about CB.

Or maybe someone — Foster? — has Astrid, and Ray has to find out what Bernie's up to or someone will "off" Astrid. I think Ray would be more scared of that.

Or maybe Albie was being investigated by the Feds, and now that he's out of the picture the Feds want to know who else was in his organization, and since Bernie's been known to visit him a time or two — not to mention finding his body — he's been fingered. And they're threatening Ray with an IRS audit so he'll cooperate, and since he's been cheating on his taxes, he's afraid. He's very afraid.

Or maybe…the possibilities are endless, and I've gotta quit now because Mom is going to work and cutting off my computer time. Phooey!!!

In apropo of nothing on the blog at this point . . .

A mom of one of those darling little pups wrote this morning . .

Ok, so this one is very scary. Sawyer came around the corner and took a flying leap while I was in the bathroom and flushed the toilet while he was airborne and while it was being used. Just picture that!

  29. B.Stover

Mollypop is right. Since Chet went to K-9 school (and almost passed) he would be able to smell a bomb.

  30. dawson
    7:25 am on October 18th, 2010

  32. Siber-H
    7:34 am on October 18th, 2010

Rio is correct…It takes specialized training to become a bomb sniffing dog. A dog that has been trained to be a police dog and find and go after the perps is not the same as a dog that has been trained to find explosives.

I may have a long nose, but I wouldn't know the difference between TNT and a rose.

  35. Siber-H
    7:45 am on October 18th, 2010

In real life, bad guys have put bombs on people in order to control them and get them to do what they want. That happened with a pizza delivery guys ten or more years ago and the poor guy wound up dead. The bad guys were trying to get him to committ some sort of robbery.

  36. Riö - The Evil

Tapped!… If Ray is only wired for sound does it mean someone wants to make sure Ray doesn’t tell Bernie what he knows?… snort!…Or are they trying to find out if Col. Bob hired Bernie to find Astrid? …grunt!….I didn’t think he could make this story interesting again, but he has done it!….wheeze!

They should be done with the roofing today. Yippeee! Alice is in the back of the walk-in closet under the long clothes. Abbie has gone into hiding somewhere but I can't find her. Right now it is quiet because it is lunch time here on the prairie. However they will be up and at it again soon. The cats don't believe in lunch breaks and are staying in hiding.

We need to back up again guys. This began with Astrid going missing (or running off to protect herself). That part can't be solved until we solve other things. What was the motive for killing Albie? I think we need to start there.

melanie, I do not think there is enough coffee in the world to prepare you for a fly-by flushing, especially if you were on the thone at the time, hehe, no flushing problems in the yard, but Annie especially likes to kick the grass back when she is finished doing her business, mom and dad call that flushing, dog style.

Mom was almost late for work this morning because she could not leave until she finished Dan's book. We both thought it was wonderful, even the teary parts. Mom really identified with your diagnosis problems, as she went through the same type of aggravation including a liver biopsy, but luckily did not have hepatitis, so she is back in hypochondriac status. Rio, I did not catch "Fowl Play" because Barb shut the computer off and left for awhile. I always notice references to chickens, bacon and rats!

Cute little Jackson (18 months) climbed up on the lawn tractor Saturday to play, as little boy humans like to do. Later Josh asked Barb if she had put the key up for safe keeping. She had not, and the key has not been seen since. So a trip to the Farm and Fleet was required this morning. It was a learning experience. I should have done a better job of herding him, I guess.

Wish you had a video of the fly-by, but guess it couldn't be done without serious exposure of the person on the throne.

Kirby..you are a Kinsey Milhone fan too! We have read all her books, we like her note card system. And our late great-uncle's favorite saying was "curiouser and curiouser". If you read some of PSQA's interviews he talks about weak sentences that have to have a connector like AND. Now we are very self conscious whenever we do that. He says that if an author writes that way he just puts the book down.

Molly, You weren't here for Friday night's game..don't give up on the Yankees yet.

My mom may not make it to the end of the game either. She has a cold, a garden variety one, she says. She is a bit slower than normal, but she will live.

On the subject of costumes. Two years ago, before I lived here, Belle had an Indian maiden costume. Mom thinks it would be cute to have me wear it this year. hmmmm, we will have to think about that. It might get me all pinned up, not as serious as getting all poodled up.

Be careful, guys. We can't take the Yankees for granted. We must not wake the sleeping giant. After all, they have the best team money can buy. But the Rangers have heart!! And they are leading the series!

SiberH, mom got Linus's pirate hat at Petsmart. It's really a dog hat, but don't tell Linus that. We'll try to get his pic tomorrow in costume and post it. We bet you would look like Capt Jack Sparrow with the hat and your eyeliner. Linus just looks like a mad, fat cat in his hat.
