Dry Gulch (More)
I was just finishing the steak tips – best I’d ever had, at least since the last time – when Bernie glanced over at the archway that led from the main part of the restaurant to the patio. Humans get this look of surprise sometimes, their eyebrows going up and all of a sudden looking younger than they are, and Bernie had that look now. A guy was coming toward us, but not Colonel Bob, who was the guy we were expecting, unless I’d gotten it wrong. And that can happen. Take in that warehouse down in Mexico, when I’d expected Peanut to pull up in front of that metal roll-up door and come to a stop. Was I wrong about that or what? That’s in To Fetch A Thief unless I’m wrong about that, too.
But forget all that. The point is the guy coming toward us was not Colonel Bob, although he looked kind of like a younger version. Hey! It was Ray.
Happy Birthday, Rosie! And many many more.

This requires pondering. I hope Col. Bob is okay. My speculation about Ray being arrested was certainly wrong.
Happy, happy birthday Rosie!

Are Ray and Col Bob about to meet face to face again? As B says….pondering
5:04 am on October 12th, 2010
Happy Birthday, Rosie. Hope you are enjoying Prague.
At least Spence got back on track a little bit today with the Astrid case. Bee and Rio will be happy.
5:26 am on October 12th, 2010
I will admit I have no idea what is going to happen. NONE! dammit. Usually I can figure these things out.
Happy Birthday Rosie! From all of us, Abbie, Alice Johnson and me too.
5:32 am on October 12th, 2010
Well, that was a surprise! Now CB is missing!! Or is he? Will he be the next person to come on to the patio? Or Astrid? Or Foster? Furshure, it ain't going to be Ratko or Albie!
5:35 am on October 12th, 2010
Happy Birthday to you Rosie!! A toast with Prague beer from the recipe from 1499 that tastes like chocolate, coffee, and medieval-ness!

Hey all!
Melanie: If you don't want to wait for Netflix, you can view Rubicon at Amazon.com. It's $1.99 per episode. After purchase you can go back to it any time you want. (I haven't done this by the way. I've been watching On Demand which no longer goes back to the beginning of the series.) I think it's important to watch this series in chronological order.
G&BB: Thank you for reminding me about Hawaii Five-0. I'll watch it On Demand.
The last time we saw Ray he was leaving with Tulip. That was at the motel I think, when we found out about Astrid's missing suitcases. So what happened to him between then and now? My pondering will have to end here until we're given more info.
5:43 am on October 12th, 2010
Doesn't that beer look good even this early in the day!
6:05 am on October 12th, 2010
Happy Birthday Rosie!!!!
So, obviously Ray and Col Bob are in contact, but how? If they are communicating, then why did Bob hire the boys in the first place?
I'm not too optimistic about Rio being happy about anything.
Watch: he find something to complain about, lol!
Spence, I hope you are resting up after all your travels. I can understand Chet getting confused about the AM / PM thing. Dogs generally don't have to worry about stupid stuff like that.
6:21 am on October 12th, 2010
Since I've been a party dog all weekend and still catching up, I want to mention about Spence's radio interview last Friday. Mom and I loved when he talked about his dark side. We really like that in his other books – not Chet and Bernie, of course.

Hey!…It’s Rosie’s birthday!…wheeze!… Whoopeee!… Here’s a birthday card for Rosie from me, Rio…grunt!

Ray!… Now that is a little unexpected…snort!… I wonder how he found out about the meeting at the Dry Gulch?… grunt!… Has someone been following Chet and Bernie?…sniff!sniff!….I doubt Ray and Col Bob are on speaking terms…sneeze!
7:21 am on October 12th, 2010
Happy Birthday Rosie!
Siber-H: Yes, watched the Giants game. Exciting game to the last second. Giants won! We are happy. Glad the Giants cheered Bobby Cox too.
A friend of mine watches Sanctuary on Syfy. Has anyone seen it & if so, is it worth watching? I think it is coming back soon.
7:57 am on October 12th, 2010
THEY HAVE ARRIVED!!!
My signed, paw-printed and inscribed (One Just Plunders On) copy of TFAT!! Thank you so much Spence and Chet!
Also….For the Love of Puppies, signed and inscribed by Dan (To B. Stover, A Fellow Plunderer!) and signed with Best Wishes by OTAS. And a wonderful bookmark from River Bear Newfoundlands signed by Melanie and Zoe. Thank you!!! (I love the picture of Patsy with her face covered with snow!)
This calls for the opening of another bottle of Cahors!
8:02 am on October 12th, 2010
Uh-oh,
B is into the wine. I think she is going to have a fine day.
8:06 am on October 12th, 2010
Mom says Bee needs to share some virtual Cohors with the blog. Then we can all get virtually tipsy!
Happy Beer Day to Rosie. Oops did I do that? Uh, Birthday.
8:07 am on October 12th, 2010
The Almost Home Animal Sanctuary is local here in Ellicottville. They have a sheep named Webster who wants to play with the dogs.

8:09 am on October 12th, 2010
And this one from the Sanctuary is called "900 pound backup plan" and you'll see why. This may also be Webster.

8:17 am on October 12th, 2010
LOL. Okay folks. I'm not having any wine until dinner.
MollieABP: I watched Sanctuary and it is good. I stopped watching (I think time was a problem) but plan to get the dvd of season one from a friend of mine who really likes the show.
And Happy Beer day is a good one Macy.
8:26 am on October 12th, 2010
Happy Birthday Husky Hugs to Rosie!!
Cute videos, Molly. All the animals look well cared for and the sheep is having a blast with those dogs…well behaved dogs, I might add.
8:40 am on October 12th, 2010
Mollypop: I didn't know sheep could hop around like that. Webster is having fun and so are the dogs. I don't know about the pig.
8:40 am on October 12th, 2010
I was reading an article (not going to say where just in case you know who is reading) that talks about dogs may be optimists or pessimists.
Our pack is definitely optimists. They are always convinced they will be petted, are welcome and there is food just around the corner!
8:43 am on October 12th, 2010
DON'T READ RIÖ!
The sheep reminded me of our baby goats. As soon as they were born and on their feet (mintues) they began leaping around. Totally cool.
8:51 am on October 12th, 2010
Melanie!…Were these the goats that were dancing on top of your VW Bug?…snort!
9:31 am on October 12th, 2010
That was there mother!
9:32 am on October 12th, 2010
Melanie – I love the Newf personality. They're great to be around, even with the antics that you have to put up with.
9:36 am on October 12th, 2010
Greeting everybody. Wookie signing in from Woodstock, Vermont. Sorry you haven't heard from me for a while, but I was having some tightness in my back which affects my mobility a bit, but I am feeling better today. The weather here has been great, sunny but really cool; we even had frost on the windshield of the station wagon a couple of mornings.
I've been trying to follow everything on the blog. Happy birthday to Rosie and glad that Stover's books arrived — I was starting to get worried about the goats.
And Rio — loved your suggested titles. I don't understand why your friend is dubious, they sounded great. However, I do have one further suggestion for you — Pugmalion, about a shy pug from Colorado who blossoms into the star of a blog.
Glad that Siber-H is back and that he had a great time in the mountains last week. Actually met a counsin of his in Woodstock on Saturday; a real nice dog. Also, while hiking up Mount Tom on Saturday, met a cute little girl dog who was rescued from Mexico; I think her name may have been Lola. She kept asking if I knew where she could find this big guy with mismatched ears. I told her I thought he was in Arizona, but I would pass the word onto him that she was looking for him. She barked her appreciation.
That's it for now. Wookie
9:40 am on October 12th, 2010
Wooks – You are right next door to the Killington Ski Area. Mom loves it there.
9:43 am on October 12th, 2010
I'll try again: The Newfs are great to be around, even the antics up with which Melanie must put.
9:46 am on October 12th, 2010
Also, from Wookie's report, the Woodstock where he is, is not the same place as the Woodstock of 1969. If you're young and asking 'huh?' then nevermind.
9:48 am on October 12th, 2010
Wookie!… I didn’t think we would hear from you. Glad you checked in pal!….grunt! … I’ll tell her about your Pugmalion idea, but I can already see her shaking her head No….snort!… I hope they are taking some photos of you on vacation…wheeze! Star of what blog exactly?… sniff!
Melanie!…. Okay, so their mom was the stoner party goat….wheeze! ….who danced on VW Bugs…heh!
9:54 am on October 12th, 2010
Wookie: Good to hear from you.
Mollypop: You're funny. Which sentence do you prefer?
Rio: Did you get my post yesterday regarding your question with Rubicon?
I'm going to go study Rubicon more since I can't ponder further on the Astrid case yet.
10:04 am on October 12th, 2010
B – I liked the first way so much more and it makes more sense to me too.
10:14 am on October 12th, 2010
Stover!… Regarding Rubicon. I did get the main point about the men in the photo who are now on the boards of all these different companies and are setting up “accidents” to make millions…grunt!… Somehow I missed the whole suicide bombing angle, probably because he looked like an All American kind of guy….snort!
10:31 am on October 12th, 2010
Nice!… So nice to find out that Kirby thinks the “old blood” around here is becoming very tiring… grump! ….When I find that someone is wearing on me Kirby, I just stop reading their comments… snarl! …A simple fix.
10:58 am on October 12th, 2010
Molly (ABP) and B. Stover: I just found Sanctuary on Netfix a couple of days ago. I watching the first season. Pretty good.
B. Stover: Glad both your books came in!
Stoner goat (snicker)
11:09 am on October 12th, 2010
Bee, Sheep, and especially lambs, do hop around like that when they are happy and playful. Sometimes in the spring, you can see the young lambs sort of boinging in the fields.
Rio, Glad you liked the ending with a twist in End of Story. Barb hates to be a partypooper, but she agrees with Bee about some of the choices made. Maybe Barb is just too conventional.
We have actually come up with some book titles. Hope to hear more on that subject soon. Don't you think we should be able to submit multiple titles?
We are going to the mail box to see if we got a package from Melanie. BBL
11:14 am on October 12th, 2010
Phrase!…. I heard part of a discussion today, don’t ask me where, but it brought End Of Story to mind….snort!… “Self delusion is the strongest delusion of all.”… and then a bunch of other blah blah blah that I ignored…heh!
11:24 am on October 12th, 2010
Melanie: Just got the For the Love of Puppies book and the very cute bookmark. Thank you again!
11:41 am on October 12th, 2010
Hi, Everybody.
Melanie – the book arrived and it feels like magic, just like Chet's books. Brought tears for some reason…and love the bookmark. Thank you and Dan and Zoe and OTAS and the Pack.
11:48 am on October 12th, 2010
Hello dahlings! Melanie, your book came today and we are so eager to dive right in. Thanks again for sending it to us. Fall is certainly in the air here in the land of no jobs, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Trees are changing color, corn and soybeans are being harvested. Mom pulled out her leather coat last week, but is in shorts and a short-sleeved T today. Poodle hugs and kisses to all…
11:54 am on October 12th, 2010
Ooooh.
The Plunderers are starting to get "For the Love of Puppies", in the mail. How exciting!
Staff: I finally got approval from work to visit mom and dad in November/December. I'll be showing up on election day. Save my autographed books for me.
Wookie's back. Yippee, skippy.
Happy Birthday Rosie. In honor of your birthday I ate all the pecan tarts I meant to send to Sam. Sorry Sam. Not.
12:09 pm on October 12th, 2010
We, too, received our book. Barb has been pouring through it for the last hour. Love the autograph – To Tin Futures Barb and Maggie, Protector of Chickens. Love the book mark! We have a similar snow picture. Newfies do love the snow! The illustrations are beautiful, Rob.
Barb is going to let Gus's mom, Kelly, read the book, but she can't keep it.
Thank you again Melanie, Zoe, Dan and Rob.
1:51 pm on October 12th, 2010
Rio: I don't remember which episode but Will's team discovered that "Kateb" was "invented" in 2004 and that he was actually a young American male. (Grant found his picture at that wedding.) They had his American name and knew when he had crossed the Mexican border into America just before the bombing in the last episode. Truxton Spangler has been organizing unauthorized "ops" for years and I think he organized this one. I'm beginning to think that he wants more than money. Given the name of the program, I beginning to wonder if he wants to take over the government–just as Caesar did when he crossed the Rubicon. It's spooky and I also keep thinking of Halliburton.
1:54 pm on October 12th, 2010
Awww – Dawson, I wanted those pecan tarts. But, okay, Mom gave me some chicken to make me feel better.
You just wait until I have moose tarts – see if I send you any.
2:02 pm on October 12th, 2010
Being allergic to gluten, it is rare for me to have bread. There's one person around here that makes GOOD gluten bread. I buy it occasionally. I kept the crusts for the last two times and made BREAD PUDDING today! Boy is it good. Might not be pecan tarts (snicker) but it's good!
2:17 pm on October 12th, 2010
that should be "GOOD gluten free bread"!
2:36 pm on October 12th, 2010
Dan's book arrived!! Thank you Melanie, Dan, Zoe, Rob, and Newfs! We love the inscription and the book is another book mom won't let me read while eating, and she won't let me use the bookmark either. For once, I agree with her. It's a special bookmark and book. We will treasure it always. We are going to start reading it tomorrow.
2:44 pm on October 12th, 2010
Glad you guys are getting the book! Have fun!
2:53 pm on October 12th, 2010
Melanie, That was a lot of work to get all those books packaged, addressed, and mailed. We appreciate it. Thank You! I'm sure the Newfs helped.
3:05 pm on October 12th, 2010
I was thinking if any envelopes needed sealing, the Newfs would be very helpful.
3:08 pm on October 12th, 2010
Siber H, Glad you are back.
Rio, Hope you are still reading our posts, friend!
3:18 pm on October 12th, 2010
Melanie, we received our book today too. Thank you so much, not that Mom has let us see it yet. She opened it at the kitchen island, started reading the 1st chapter and already shed tears over little Kellie Green. It was so nice of Dan to think of all of us and to take the time to personalize the autographs when he is still not "up to snuff." Mom showed Dad (she had already told him about it) and he was very impressed…..Said we had quite a family here on the blog. And we do.
So, thank you, Dan(for thinking of us when you should be concentrating on getting well),Zoe (who has had her hands full with puppies and trips to the hospital), OTAS Rob (absolutely beautiful drawings),Melanie (for being part of this family and for sharing your other family with us) and for the Newf pack (who we all feel like we know personally).
We don't think Mom mentioned this after seeing SQ at the signing, but he did mention that he hoped he would get to visit your place when you have your next litter of pups.
Kat love to all!
G&BB
3:30 pm on October 12th, 2010
Melanie, Maybe Spence is thinking about adding a Newfie puppy to his family. Bet Audrey would love it.
3:31 pm on October 12th, 2010
Puppies!… Hey! We got our copy too!..snort!snort!…Melanie please thank Dan so much for his generosity and my friend snickered over what he had written to me …heh!…Dan is the Man!…gruff!….The artwork is amazing and your son is so very talented…Wow!… This has been a special month for autographed books, and Quilts all around!…heh! … This will be the next book we read while waiting for our order from B&N…grunt!
3:38 pm on October 12th, 2010
Puss N’ Boots!…. You are kidding us right?….snort! … YOU FORGOT TO MENTION THAT SPENCER WANTS TO VISIT MELANIE WHEN THE NEXT LITTER IS BORN??…. grunt!…Are you Freakin’ kidding me? How in the world could you FORGET something like that and not pass it on until now?…. Holy freakin memory loss!… wheeze!…Did he say anything else about visiting other guys that you might have OVER-LOOKED??… gasp!…For gawds sake.
3:39 pm on October 12th, 2010
Siber-H – Mickey Mantle! Oh boy, soon you will be in my clutches. Go Yankees!
3:45 pm on October 12th, 2010
GAH!….This night is turning into a nightmare!….snort!… Now SiberH is reading about old Yankee players…..gasp!…Can it get any worse I ask you???… grumble!
4:01 pm on October 12th, 2010
MagPie!… I will always be reading you and Barbs posts because you are an interesting pair to say the least! … snort! … Gourmet Chef and Rat Killer Extraordinaire – what could be better!…grunt!…You guys should be in one of Chet and Bernie’s books!….grunt!…Maybe Barb could be Bernie’s financial advisor…heh!heh!… MagPie and Chet could take a few or more runs around the chicken coop!…sniff!
4:04 pm on October 12th, 2010
I like the old Yankee players. They are some of my baseball heroes. I have read biographies of all of them. The Rockies are too young to have old-time heroes yet, but they will.
4:09 pm on October 12th, 2010
Oh Siber-H – Heh heh.
4:11 pm on October 12th, 2010
SiberH!…I know…I know… sigh! … We are watching the Rangers vs Rays game tonight… grunt!….Game tied so far. You said you would root for the Rangers, right! We are at odds tonight my friend…wheeze!
4:12 pm on October 12th, 2010
Molly!…You are a Ruthless Yankees fan! No doubt about it!…grunt!sneeze!cough!
4:13 pm on October 12th, 2010
Hey everybody! Mom finally finished making supper and turned on the computer for me — now we just have to wait for Dad to get home. We're eating late tonight because Dad has duty.
Happy Birthday, Rosie! I don't know why everyone here is trying to ply you with beer — the stuff tastes vile! Have a piece of cake instead!!!
Welcome back, Wookie! I hope your back continues to improve — that's one body part that can make you quite miserable if it isn't up to snuff!
Rio: I didn't say all the "old blood" was tiresome, just some. And I don't believed I mentioned any names, but if the collar fits…
4:18 pm on October 12th, 2010
Melanie: I wanted to give you your very own post. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Mom and I got our book today, and we love the inscription. I now have my poetic abilities enshrined forever! And thank you to Zoe and OTAS for the major parts they both played in the gift.
And finally, to Dan: We haven't read the book yet, but we think your photo is very distinguished! Thank you so much for the book. We look forward to reading it, and we hope you get well very, very soon!!!
4:19 pm on October 12th, 2010
Yes, I am watching the game and cheering for the Rangers. That's ok, Rio, we can root for different teams and still be friends.
I am assuming that Macy is watching the game and chewing her toenails. These post season games have been so close.
4:27 pm on October 12th, 2010
Rio, Thank you, thank you, for all the good stuff. We feel very complimented, and will keep trying to keep it fresh.
Barb says if she were Bernie's financial advisor, she would tell him to stay away from tin futures, and just do some dollar cost averaging into some nice solid mutual funds. Bernie, stay away from the quick killings!
And Chet is welcome to join me in the chicken coop any time!hee hee!
4:27 pm on October 12th, 2010
Rangers!….They are really fighting and scrambling for the win! Making runs happen from nothing! …Wow!….SiberH! I may have to change sides. …hemmmm!…Give me another inning or two….snuffle!
4:47 pm on October 12th, 2010
I like the way the Rangers play ball. They are scrappy. I think the Rockies could benefit from the kind of coaching that the Rangers have and play the same kind of ball.
Oh yeah, and I think Bernie could really benefit from Barb's financial advice.
4:47 pm on October 12th, 2010
Kirby!…I get your drift loud and clear…snort!
4:51 pm on October 12th, 2010
Scrappy!…SiberH, that’s the Word I was looking for!…grunt!…They are fighting for the win, it is a very fun thing to watch….MIN PIN!…Where are you???… snort!…
5:20 pm on October 12th, 2010
Oh Yeah, and Bernie, the Hawaiian pants are a No, No!
5:27 pm on October 12th, 2010
MagPie!…What the Hell are you yelping about?…snort!
5:28 pm on October 12th, 2010
Rio – He's mine, he's mine.
5:36 pm on October 12th, 2010
Molly!… Just for the Post-Season …maybe…sniffle!..crap!
5:40 pm on October 12th, 2010
See you guys tomorrow. Good nighty!
5:48 pm on October 12th, 2010
I have watched all the Rays and Rangers games and have not seen Brad Hawpe. What have the Rays done with him?
5:49 pm on October 12th, 2010
Rio, We just meant the Hawaiian pants are a No, as Bernie's Investment Advisor. No yelping intended. Good night, all.
6:06 pm on October 12th, 2010
OH!…MagPie – Please don’t take to heart this financial advisor stuff unless you read it in one of his books!…heh!heh!…snort!… You guys!
SiberH!….I have not seen Brad Hawpe play either, and that’s why I have no qualms right now about rooting for the Rangers…grunt!…The Rays aren’t playing Hawoe….grump!…Maybe me and my friend are under a strong “self delusion” about his abilities….wheeze!! …gasp!!
6:10 pm on October 12th, 2010
Rio, we didn't forget to mention the possible visit to Melanie. It was something mentioned by SQ offhand and we weren't sure if it was something he would be able to do. We had already mentioned the title contest (and he is probably pulling his hair out trying to get the publisher to agree to that idea and to figure out the logistics of it…what if C.Harris wins and he ends up going to the Artic Circle?) But he did mention that Melanie doesn't live that far from him and he would like to get by and see her when they have more puppies.
We did warn you that Mom would not be the detailed reported that Kirby's mom was…goodness, we were lucky she remembered any details.
6:11 pm on October 12th, 2010
Oops…that's supposed to say "detailed reporter"
6:19 pm on October 12th, 2010
Baseball!… The Rays Out – The Rangers In…gruff!…The Rays were leading almost all season long…heh!…Now we have the Rangers vs Yankees!…heh!
Molly!… Fun times ahead! ..snorkel! ….I think it is the Giants vs the Phillies on the other side…heh!…Damn those Giants, but now I have to root for them just because…grump!
Pick!…Giants vs Rangers in the World Series!…snort!
6:25 pm on October 12th, 2010
Puss N’ Boots!… I know you did the best you could in terms of reporting…snuffle!… It was just a surprise that he actually mentioned he might want to visit and see the new litter of Newfs… snort!… I mean this is a very big deal (to us) – maybe not to you Kats…grunt!… I love you old guys no matter what is left of your memory cells…heh! …But if you have any more memory bombs to drop, please let us know gently…grump! …That was a BIG ONE…wheeze!
6:30 pm on October 12th, 2010
MaaaacY!!! The Rangers are moving on up!
Gus&BooBear, Your mom did a good job of reporting and so did Macy's mom. If my mom lived as close to Melanie as Spence does, she'd be at Melanie's front door wanting to see the puppies and the pack.
Good Night Everyone!
6:35 pm on October 12th, 2010
Whoa!…We are off to bed all excited about the Post-Season even though our guys are not innit!…gruff!…This is going to be a great baseball time!…heh!
Goodnight! ….All you guys and kats sleep tight and maybe I will see you tomorrow and maybe I won’t…heh! ….Rockie is still at the spa, so if you are waiting for your Bed Bug Extermination, please be patient…snuff!…It will get done. Just like the Astrid Case…heh!…Time Marches On.
7:50 pm on October 12th, 2010
Mom went to Barnes and Noble today. They have a new, huge stack of TFAT front and center in the store, where they bloody well belong. TFAT is the first book a customer will see when they start looking at new arrivals. Mom and I are pleased.
Mom bought a new biography of Mickey Mantle (are you reading this Mollypop?), but she is going to read Dan’s book first.
6:53 pm on October 12th, 2010
Yes, I can breathe again. Go Rangers, Go. Yankees, schmankees! Woot woot!
Melanie, thanks so much, we got our book today. Haven't looked at it much, too keyed up about the playoffs. Tomorrow plan to give it our full attention.
Adrenaline fading,
Macy out.
12:06 am on January 11th, 2011
Your nice blog is worth a read if anyone comes across it. Im lucky i did because now Ive got an entirely new view of the following. I didnt realise that it issue was so important and for that reason universal. You definitely put it in perspective for us, thanks for the fantatic tips.
1:50 pm on January 19th, 2011
How come all of a sudden do we appear to have some sort of crisis problem involving bed bugs in the usa I worked for a area University for 30 years and didn’t have trouble until 2 yrs ago?
