Dock Ellis

“Did we blow it yesterday or what?” says Admin.

“Missing the 42nd anniversary of Dock Ellis’ no hitter?” Spence says. “A no hitter he threw for the Pirates against the Padres, June 12, 1970. Lots of no hitters in baseball history – “

“As opposed to perfect games – “

” – but only one like his. Dock didn’t realize he was pitching that day and so indulged in some LSD before the game. His recall of events was unusual. ‘The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn’t. Sometimes, I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder.'”

“Rest in peace, Dock.”

Welcome Lee, a first-class digger.

Howlers – We’re driving to South Bend today to visit a friend in town for a seminar. We’ll stop at the ND grotto to say a prayer for all Plunderer concerns. Can’t hurt. Might help.

Very interesting about Dock Ellis! Those were the days in baseball! Boy, I wonder were Spence and Admin come up with these tidbits.

Steve: Just have Moe and friend move over for me.

    Tenzing: Feel better.

Can’t remember all the other stuff right now.

Rosalyn is not getting better. Fever has come back. A trip to the Vet is in the offing. We’ll be taking her in early tomorrow and leaving her there for the day. I don’t believe lightning bolts will be in the mix nor the removal of teeth.

Dan has been told to quit lying to the staff and doctor or he won’t come home. Perhaps that will get his patootie in gear.

Riö, I hate auto check. On “all” (have no idea how they came up with of) the stuff with your friend’s mother, I’m with her on that. Or I understand. Or I’ve got your back. something like that.

Okay, YSAS. He is dyslexic. Dog, oh dog, is he dyslexic and he has never tried to do a staged reading before because you have to have script in hand and look at it.

As he puts it, when reading out loud there seems to be some disconnect between what he sees, what’s actually there and what comes out of his mouth.

Now his memorization skills are unbelievable. Give him time and he’ll not only have his part memorized but everyone else’s in the play. And this is before people are off book. That reminds me of when he was getting tested. He can memorize objects, a story and so on, but straight facts with no background? Snort! They were testing his mathematical skills when he was 7 and he was doing great! Then the researcher noticed his eyes flicking across the room. He was memorizing objects by counting to the number asked for and then adding more or subtract and then recounting the objects he had memorized. The researcher said he had never seen that before. Snicker.

Anyhoo, he has done the first staged reading. He was a lead. He was convinced he had totally screwed up. He didn’t know if what he was saying was what had been written (the writer kept changing the lines). He was at a total lost on his performance.

Turns out he was excellent! Anyhoo, many of our fantastic actors are dyslexic. Who’d a thunked it?

I came upon a new word (new to me): “Frequentative.” It’s a grammatical term. The adjective means “expressing repeated action.” The noun means “a frequentative verb or verb form.” (I hate definitions that use the term being defined.) Basically, as I understand it, it is a verb formed from another verb: “wrestle” from “wrest.” I’m trying to think of other examples.

Well! Our morning did not get off to a good start. Sometime during the night the power went out for a couple of hours. Stumbled around in the dark to turn of the annoying flashing lights and managed to turn on the clock radio instead. Someone talking in a foreign language. Went back to bed. This morning turned on the coffee maker…did some other stuff…came back to find it deader-than-a-door-nail. Fortunately the french press was standing by or there would be some grumpy ones in this house about now. A trip to housewares is in our near future.

Steve: That’s a cute picture of Moe with?…which one of the kats is it?

Barb&Magpie: WooooHoooo! This is getting serious. Sounds like a very nice couple. We want only the very best for you and Kindred Spirits Farm. Somehow, I am picturing you having very mixed feelings when it is finally time to go.

Rio: Love Mad Men! Unfortunately, as you know, we here must wait for the DVD from good old Netflix, so thanks for the preview.
You can’t beat those “fun” 70’s. Not something anyone here would know anything about. The parental units, being in the medical profession, painted some very dire warnings about what can happen when experimenting with certain substances.

    EEEEEEEEKKKKKK!!!!

Our little hearts are still just pounding. Mama was sitting at the kitchen table when the front door bell rang. The front door is about 7 feet from the table, and there is a big window next to it. She looked over, and there was a BEAR standing on the front steps, looking in the window and she had leaned on bell!

Mama grabbed her camera, but by then the bear had gotten down. We still got a picture, but not the close up. We sent it to Melanie to see if she can clean it up and post it.

Then she walked away, and she has two itty bitty babies with her – they were just about our size, but we DO NOT want to play with them!

When Barb was little she had a scary dream where she was in one part of the house peering around the corner, and her folks and little sis were at the other end. Rebecca: I think that there are only two things that intimidate me: cars that don’t work and flying in a plane. Let us know when you land.

Melanie: I’ve forgotten what you said. Is a reading a form of rehearsal?

Lots of raccoons around these parts.

B: The only thing about the French press is…what to do with the coffee grounds? They are so messy. In a regular coffee maker the filter takes care of the problem nicely. Here on the Island everything that can be is recycled. Recyclables, food & yard waste, are all separated from the regular trash.

Melanie: It’s amazing that YSAS has solved what could have been an insurmountable problem for most actors.
Hope things will soon be under control with Dan’s meds.

Bee – we live in a wooded area, and after all the bears were here first. If you could see an arial picture of our house, you could see that there is a direct route throught the woods that leads to miles and miles of woodlands, over a mini mountain, to water supplies etc.
And there are more and more bears around now since housing is creeping in on their habitat. Bears in general are pretty bold – they seem to knw that they ARE bears after all, and who is going to mess with them. This lady wasn’t in the least bit concerned that Mama was on the other side of the screened window, just feet away from her.
And black bears, while they will defend their young, tend not to be aggressive or seek confrontation like grizzlies or polars. Of course there is the occasional nonconformist….

And now – off to get the posters for a certain SnowBella’s Big Star Turn!

Melanie — My dad is not dyslexic but he has a similar story of sorts. His eyesight was already pretty bad by third grade, but he generally hid it well because he didn’t want to get glasses. In any event, his teacher has a math contest where she would hold up flash cards with math problems on them and people would have to answer. The problem with my dad was he could not see what was on the flash card, so he said, if the card is 3×8, the answer is 24, if it 6×5, the answer is 30 and so on. He got an A in math, but a note home from the teacher led to him getting glasses shortly thereafter.

Stover, for the bears in NM it is an environmental issue. The bears are being crowded out of their natural habitat by people building homes in the forest. Also, the bears often have food shortages because the mountains haven’t received enough moisture.(climate change?)
New Mexico’s Fish and Game allowed hunters to shoot twice the number of bears as usual this past year. That is their solution to bears hanging around populated areas.

About building homes in the forest in this state with the pine tress smack up against your house…124 homes have burned in NM’s latest wildfire.

I never buy ground coffee but always grind the beans just before using. As far as the used grounds in the French press, just put a bit of water in it and then pour out water and grounds into a paper towel and throw away.

Rio, bedbugs are in Philly? That is a little too close for comfort.
Masquers, The Grotto is a very special shrine on the campus of Notre Dame. It is one of the can’t miss places on any visit to N.D. Students and tourists all light candles there, and spend quiet time praying or meditating or just enjoying the serenity. It is especially crowded on football weekends, as all of the Irish say a prayer for our favorite team. Here is a link I found that shows it and describes its meaning.

Zoe and I have just finished listening to the finish of our Public Radio station’s fund raiser. At the end they always play Kate Smith singing “God Bless America”. I remember seeing Kate Smith singing this. Zoe and I don’t remember if we actually saw her or if it was in a movie. I was young.

We sing along as loud as we possibly can!

So, it was an interesting rest of the day around here. Seems Mama Bear found the neighborhood quite hospitable, and stuck around for most of the day. Her cubs were just little bitty guys, and we think they got tired of rambling and gamboling, and just decided to take a nap. So Mama Bear watched over them while they snoozed in the sun. Once they had ambled off, our Mama went to get in the car to go to the printers. She backed out of the driveway and had to stop cuz – whoops – there goes Mama Bear again with frolicking cubs in tow.
After they headed for the woods, Mama drove away. She told someone about the bears and they asked her if she had called the police. Why? What would the police do, except chase the bears, or Dog Forbid tranquilize them and move them. So what if Mama was a little late doing errands. The world did not end – didn’t even ripple the tiniest bit. It was worth it to be a part of the bears’ day, even if it was just an outside glimpse of the magnificence of nature.

Bella – yes, we are having two Alaskan guests coming – Bella the Beloved Plunderer Buddy, with whom we will laugh and eat cheesecake, and the Great and Eloquent Rebecca Savidis who will inspire the hoards of people listening to her to give up their last dollar for her doggies.

Bella – you should have seen those Wrotten Kats when Mama Bear peeked into the window. That is the window where they sit and watch the birds and chippies. The dining room table is under that window, and around here we just call it the Kitty TV.

People often get put off by long term dieting side effects diets as sticking to a
healthy eating habit. You can use the photos to help you
with your regular dieting side effects. For example, I was able dieting side
