Digital Madness

“So who was running the show when we were away?” says Admin.

“Not sure,” says Spence.

“Whoever it was had a little adventure on Facebook.”

“Uh-oh.”

“Mentioned something about frisbees.”

“Uh-oh.”

“But yes. Ended up in some sort of spontaneous contest having to do with that ‘like’ feature.”

“Do we even have any of those frisbees? Wasn’t that an Atria thing only, for BEA?”

“We’d better make a search. Otherwise there may be resentment. To say nothing of the Plunderers, who may be feeling completely shut out.”

“Uh-oh.”

“You said it.”

Frisbees? Those orange ones? I know where one is, behind that bush by the garage. That’s where I keep it, a real safe place. Now for a nice stretch.

Chet . . . you want to share??

    Good morning B.Stover and BSD!!

Patsy doesn’t know it but when it gets warmer, she’s going in the dog pool!

First I have to computers (used as a verb, snicker), plant the poor plants and then POOL!!

Good morning everyone. We missed you guys! Barb said she is glad to be back home, after lots and lots of driving, followed by lots of eating. When her sister plans activities it is: shopping, restaurants, wine, and usually a mannie and peddie thrown in. This weekend included everything except the m & p, thank dog! Barb’s niece looks good, with 7 weeks to go before baby-day, and it was nice to catch up with all the relatives who were in attendance.

Now, have to go cut the grass which grew about a foot since last Thurdasy. And YES, we want a frisbee, too!

Good morning, y’all! Mom finally found a few recipes, so that’s done. Finally. I just hope it’s not too late, Barb. Since Mom isn’t working for the newspaper anymore, she’s not so good about deadlines! Now we just have to work on our auction stuff….when’s that due again? September? October? Sometime around there, right?

Right, like Bear says. Always blame the poor dog. (Kats don’t get blamed for anything.)

Confusion!…I’m glad we got the confusion surrounding the Frisbee give-away cleared up….grunt!….Or did we? Does someone else run the show on Facebookie for Spencer?…sniff!…What’s that all about anyways…snort!

Perhaps I’ll be a grump all day long……”Computer” is not a verb. Grump. And I keep seeing “quotes” used as a noun. Grump. “Quote” is a verb and “quotation” is a noun. Think I’ll go for a swim (both a noun and a verb!).

    Good morning all.

  10. B.Stover
    10:31 am on June 13th, 2011

“Grump” is both a noun and a verb. So is “grumble.” It was derived from the Old English “grymman” meaning “to wail” connected with mourning. Grumble now means to mutter/murmur. It would be interesting to find out what caused the decrease in volume of sound……

Miz Bee – y’all need a good whackin’ slice of Professor Bee’s Perfect Pecan Pie – seems to me that it was listed as sweet AND grammatically correct.
Maybe that will cheer up your case of the grumps. It would sure work for me!
Morning’ y’all. Hope the sun is shining on each and every one of you.
Frisbees aren’t all that important to me. I do like to use them as a rain-catching water dish. My long ears don’t get wet in a shallow dish.

Uh oh!…We are in grammar trouble today. I’m in Quotation Hell…gulp! …Just wait till Stover has to edit the dry cottage cheese recipe written last night when someone was very tired….heh!

  13. Kirby T. Penworthy
    10:40 am on June 13th, 2011

Bee: Sorry — Mom’s one of those to blame for the “quote” thing. When she was working for the newspaper she always had to “get a quote” from someone. She says she’ll never, ever do it again! Does that make you less grumpy?

By the way, there’s one thing Mom had drummed in her head the whole time she was growing up. Grandpa never allowed anyone to say they were “done” with anything — it was always finished. When they were sitting at the table, they were never “done” with dinner. If Mom and her brothers said, “I’m done, may I please be excused?” they always got a lecture. (Well, he was a professor — they always got a lecture whatever they said!) Instead, they had to say, “I’m finished, may I please be excused.” And even all these years later, she still can’t say “done.” So now Mom’s wondering if there’s a grammatical reason for that, or if that was just Grandpa’s preference? ‘Cause if there’s no grammatical reason for that, she says she might just let Grandpa have it!!!

Thanks for remembering us, Chet, but I didn’t feel left out. I have no use for frisbees except maybe to use one as a plate for Redbone’s greens and hamhocks. I bet mom wouldn’t let me use it because it would be a collectors item.

    Welcome home Barb and Maggie!

After reading the sports page and Wookie’s post, I now know what Dallas won. Way to go Texas!

  16. B.Stover
    10:53 am on June 13th, 2011

Okay…you guys have taken my grumps away. I’m laughing. (And better not let T&G’s mom see the “you guys.”

Let’s see: As an adjective “done” means finished. That is standard usage going back to Middle English I think. Kirby: Your Grandpa didn’t want you using “done” in a nonstandard way: “I done told you that.”

Redbone: After chocolate cream, Southern Pecan pie is my favorite.

Rio: Don’t worry. Proofreading one’s own work is very difficult. I know from experience.

If you look up “quote” in most dictionaries you will find that it is used as a noun also. It shouldn’t be since we still have the word “quotation.” Grump…..Oh dear!

  17. Kirby T. Penworthy
    11:00 am on June 13th, 2011

Bee: Mom would never say, “I done told you that!” But it’s interesting to know that she can say “done” and still be gramatically correct. What does Grandpa know? He teaches landscape architecture, not English! Mom says the next time she sees him, she’s going to tell him she’s done, done, done!!!

  18. Redbone Hound

Kirby T: If your Grandpa gives you any guff send him up here to chill. I could really, really use his talents as a landscape architect. He could lecture the locals on their grammar on the side.
I’m going out to the weed patch I call a garden. I have deep purple irises from a friend’s garden that decided to multipy this year. And ferns…that have decided to…live. Maybe next year they will thrive. I planted some sunflowers and pansies (3 colors) that I got from the nursery in consolation because what I went there for was raspberry and blueberry plants but they were sold out.

  22. B.Stover
    11:27 am on June 13th, 2011

    Redbone: Poor dawg!

Kirby: I’m still pondering “done” versus “finished.” (These are things I haven’t thought about in years.) When you say, “I’m done with dinner” you are not using “done” as a “helping” verb showing past action as “I done told you that” does. “Finished” carries the connotation of completion of something begun. So does the past participle of do–“done.” Instead of saying, “I’m done with dinner,” would your Grandpa have objected to, “I’m done eating”?

  23. Melanie

I was going for a LOL. Oh, well!

Dawson, Zoë put chicken wire over her sunflower seedlings. What ever was eating them is to big to get through the holes. The seedlings are growing.

Hi everyone – just stopping by before getting ready to go to work. Had the news on just now, and Christ Church in New Zealand has just been hit again with more severe aftershocks, causing quite a bit of damage, flattening more buildings.
They had footage of some people there and it was heartbreaking. These folks stayed strong after the earthquake and started picking up and rebuilding. Now this. The people are almost immobilized with shock and despair.
Can we ask you all to send up prayers for them?
    Thanks.

We will say a prayer for the earthquake victims.

Melanie, We have had a problem with the grackles eating the tops off plants in the garden. They have attacked beans, tomatoes, and zukes. Eat the entire top off of the beans and zukes as they came out of the ground. Once they get bigger they leave them alone. Plastic bags on sticks helped a little. Also was told to try a plastic owl.

Barb, mom said to tell you that plastic owls don’t work…at least not here they don’t. We don’t have grackles around houses. They stay in places like the parking lots of Walmart and grocery stores and poop on the vehicles.

Rio, you are just helping your friend’s mom stay young and get her exercise. That is what I tell my mom about my in and outs.

My dad will like Redbone’s joke, and I don’t think he has heard it before. If he had, he would have told it to me.

We are with you T&G, prayers going out for New Zealand.

Hi, everybody!! We haven’t had the computer for the last few days so haven’t been able to post. Mom caught up on the blog posts during her lunch break. Tonight she is going to work on her auction description so she can get that sent to Rebecca. She may ask for some advice in a little while (such as, she has no clue what to put as an opening bid. The jacket retailed for several hundred dollars, but she knows that it won’t bring in that kind of money. She doesn’t know if she should set the starting bid at $25.00 or $50.00 or somewhere in between. Thoughts, anyone??)

$25.00 is much too low. Either start with %50 or $75. $100 might be a little high, even tho it is worth much more.

Not too late for the recipe. We are a couple of days behind because of the 3 day trip and now Barb has to work double shift all day Tues and Wed. So go ahead and send any last minute recipes.

On ebay sellers say that a high starting bid can stop people from bidding at all. I suggest you put a note in the description stating the retail price was…so many dollars and let the bidding start at say 30.00 or 40.00 or so. People then have hope that they will be getting a deal and usually more people will bid.
We do want to sell these items don’t we?

If you want, you can say there is a reserve amount on the item. Then if it doesn’t get a high enough bid you can say it didn’t go over the reserve amount.

You do not have to say what the reserve is in the description. But it is a good idea to decide in your mind what you want for the jacket. First it is ‘as new’, but not new and second, today everyone expects a discount.

Can you search on ebay for closed auctions of items like it and see what the selling price was. Lots of times that gives you a better idea of what to sell it for.

    Pricing is hard.

Abbie, I agree with you. I have been involved in auctions where the starting bid was so high that it scared people away. When the starting bid is lower, more people are willing to bid, and maybe getting carried away in the action and paying more.

Bids!… I just don’t want Puss N’ Boots to lose their socks on the deal…heh!…If the jacket is too high-priced for an auction like this, maybe they should re-consider their offering….snuff!….That’s all I am saying on the subject…grunt!

Hocky!…Bruins are up by 5 to 1 now…snort!…Does this mean the 7th game will be back in Vancouver? If the Bruins actually win, I mean…heh!heh!

Hey there – is anyone still up?
We finally got a chance to go online. Long day in Crazy Lady Land followed by late dinner, and paperwork….lots and lots of paperwork.

Melanie – loved the video. We are SO glad you and Zoe had a great day of dogging it.

Someone at work asked Mama who she was rooting for in the NHL. She told them that a year ago, she wouldn’t have even known what NHL stood for, and since now she does, she thinks thats enough knowledge about hockey for her for the year. We will take all of your word for it that it is an exciting game.

But we still love the old joke “There was some excitement at the heavyweight fight the other night…a hockey game broke out”.

Hello – is this thing on?

Well good evening Miz Tupper, Miz Gilly. What are you two doing up so late? Usually jest me and Liz and Snowhook online by this time of night.
I don’t much care for all the hockey stuff either. Guess winter sports jest don’t count for as much down here in the south. When we see ice, we jest stay inside – we don’t go strap blades onto our feet and go sliding around on it. Never saw much point in that skiing business either.
(sorry Snowhook Bella – nuthin’ against your part of the country, but its jest too cold for this ole hounddog)

we just couldn’t go to bed without checking the blog to see what was interesting today. But now, we think its time for bed.
G’night to you and anyone else still up.

Thanks for the imput. We do want to auction the jacket and hope that it will make some money for Snowhook. As we said originally, the jacket is new (in that it has never been worn). And we’re not concerned about whether or not it makes what it retailed for. It’s about the best way to list it to make money for Snowhook. We don’t want to make the starting bid too high and keep people from bidding on it if they like it. We are thinking of a starting bid of $50.00 with $5.00 increases as bids. Do y’all think it would be better at $35.00 to start? People like to get a deal on silent auctions. This is tough since we don’t know the type of audience that will be bidding for the items.

Also, Rio and Rebecca, do we send the item description in an email to Snowhook with the picture as an attachment?

Well, Mom is keeping us awake all night with her miserable stomach cramps. So we thought we’d check back to see what everyone was posting this evening. We haven’t had a chance to read Friday, Saturday, or Sunday’s blogs.
G&BB: We agree that a bid of $35 to start may be wise. The jacket sounds lovely but we don’t know if the people looking at our items will bid on a high-priced item. We are now 2nd guessing our starting bid as well.
Did the hockey game end? Will there be a 7th game?

Barb & Maggie: I have a last minute recipie submission! A dear friend makes the best jam and asked if she could submit a recipie. She is one of the few people that doesn’t think it strange to chat with dogs and cats online. 🙂 She said she will be able to get the recipie to me on Tueday. I hope it’s not too late.

T&G: Count me in for the prayers for those impacted by the earthquakes.

Oley Howlers: You can email the description and picture to snowhookkennel@gmail.com.

Thanks to all of you who are donating and plan to bid in the auction! Spence is correct—the Plunderers are wonderful (not to be confused with wonderfluffed).

    Night all.
