Did We Bet The Ranch?

And if not, why not? Here’s the post from chetthedog.com, April 2, 2012:

“So it’s officially spring and that’s that,” says Admin. “Ready with your World Series picks?”

“Tigers versus Giants,” Spence says. “Let Timmy smoke!”

“Whoa.”

“You even nailed the Timmy part,” Admin says, “based on the kind of season he had. Who’s going to win the whole thing?”

“I don’t have a real strong feeling on this part,” Spence says. “I’ll go with Detroit on account of Verlander, but their closer scares me. Also the Giants are a very appealing team. But: Detroit.”

Spencer Quinn will be on a panel at Lake Villa Library (Lake Villa, IL) at 1PM tomorrow, Oct. 25; and that night from 6-8 at the Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter, 524 Sheridan Rd., Highwoods IL. Talking, signing, and baseball!

Welcome Frankie, Zeus, Wyatt & Olivia from Anchorage.

Bee, no idea here about Verlander. Sorry.

    Good morning all.

    Wolfie – you’re up early.

Bee – what are you reading these days? Has anyone read The Art Forger or Grisham’s newest? Mom finished A Killing in the Hills and gave it 3 1/2 stars. The ending leaves it open for a sequel.

Warm thoughts especially to Wose, G&BB’s family, Callie & Gramp, but good day to Everybody.

Morning everyone. This morning Dad said that the tea he has been drinking for about a month doesn’t taste right. I made two different cups. Now he is having soy milk with his breakfast. I didn’t want to make a third cup of tea.

I am glad you guys liked the pet costumes for Pugs. I got them from this link. Many more choices, I only got to #50.

B, admit it, we are starting to get you hooked on this base of balls thing.

As regards Verlander, he is Detroit’s premier pitcher. In a seven game series (if it were to go that long) he could potentially pitch 3 times, which could be of considerable advantage to the Tigers.

    B.Stover, I can’t remember if I put it on the blog . . .

The BBC “Sherlock” ‘s last episode . . I asked YSAS if it ended in another cliff hanger. He was very evasive. When I saw the title of the last episode, I saw why.

Thing is I have read every single Sherlock Holmes book and story. So I knew what would happen at the end. I can’t read them all the time because I have very old $1 or under books. They are very musty so I only read them when I have a cold because then I can’t smell them.

In a million years, I could not predict which baseball teams would make it to the World Series like Spence did. One of the teams I would have picked would have been the Rangers, and we all know how that story ends.

It scares me that Verlander is pitching tonight.

Way ta go, Spencer! That is the most undecided decision about baseball on the blog since BStover decided (kind of) to watch the World’s Serious!
I don’t blame you though…the Giants are one of my favorite teams.
I would’ve definitely picked the Tigers as one of the teams going to the World Series back in April. Yes, I would have.
Verlander: He is our ACE pitcher, B.Stover. If he was a book he would be unputdownable.

  37. c.hobbit

Melanie: there are treatments for getting rid of musty-smelling books (google is your friend). As a former librarian I have used some of the ideas. Here are the basics but there are other ideas on the internet also:

Before treating musty books, have two containers on hand, a smaller box to hold the books, and a larger plastic box to hold the material that will absorb the odor. This way they never come in direct contact with anything that will make them dirty or dusty. In addition, the largest container must have a tight-fitting lid to work effectively. A cardboard box is ideal for the smaller container.

    Charcoal
Pages that smell musty can be remedied with charcoal briquettes. Partially fill a base container with unused charcoal, and place an open box of books on top of the charcoal. Close the lid of the base container, and allow the charcoal to absorb the odor for a few days or longer, depending on how musty they smell.

    Cat Litter
Cat litter is also a fantastic odor absorber. Partially fill a larger plastic box with cat litter, and place the musty smelling materials in another box on top of the cat litter. Close the larger container with a tight-fitting lid, and allow the books to remain in the container for at least a few days. This should get rid of the smell and absorb any remaining moisture.

    Coffee
Many people don’t realize that coffee is a great odor absorbing material. Semi drivers use dry coffee to remove strong odors from truck trailers, and it also works well to get rid of a musty smell in other odor-absorbing items. Place an open can of dry coffee in a large container, and place the items around it. Cover the container with a tight-sealing lid, and allow it to get rid of the musty odor for a few days or longer, depending on how musty the books smell.

Those are great tips, C.Hobbit! Although we aren’t too sure that cat litter really absorbs odor. At least not Buddy’s.

We never can see those greeting cards on the iPaw, and have to wait for Mom to come home and turn on the big computer. That hardly ever happens. But this time when we clicked on the link, we got a message that they are working on their sit to allow iPaws to view the cards. So maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Is it a train?

Siber, when Spence said Timmy would smoke, did he mean that he would be smoking cigarettes down in the bullpen? 🙂

The Corgis say I smell funny. Sage fell over laughing cus they shaved part of both my front legs, and he says I look like a giant Poodle. I sat on him.

I can’t see my hind leg, but Mama says it is a remarkable incision, No bandages – just a big row of staples. They also sent me home with lots of happy drugs. And guess what? I got a present too – must be cuz I was such a good dog. They gave me a transparent lampshade. Not really sure what the point of a transparent lampshade is, but it was a nice gesture, right? Mama says I get to see what it is useful for tonight. I can’t wait!

But I wanted to thank you all for sending me such good thoughts. It meant a lot to Grampa too – he was really nervous about this (whispering – and has been driving Mama to distraction). But now,, he gets to pay attention to ME ME ME! Its all about ME!!! I get ice packs and medicines and treats and massages, and special pats and scritches.

Dawson and Stover, Timmy was busted for possession sometime before the 2010 World Series. He really didn’t get in any trouble over it. Timmy was too valuable a starting pitcher to get suspended and San Francisco has very liberal attitudes. I read that at the World Series (Giants Stadium) in 2010 fans were smoking in the stadium and the smell was everywhere.
Timmy’s 30 lb. weight loss happened last winter and I don’t know why he lost that weight. His fastball has suffered for it and his pitching has been poor this past season.
I hope he will have a much better season next year.

Had jury duty today. In 30 years, all of my jury days have worked the same way. My name is called for the first panel. Every single time I get picked for the jury. Today was weird. By 3:30 my name was never called, so they sent the rest of us home. Too bad, but I can now plan the rest of my week without fear.

Also, just got some fabulous news. Seven weeks into retirement, a college in Westchester county wrote asking me if I wouldn’t mind working part time for them on a six month contract to fix some things in their online catalog and set up some digitization. Would I ever. The director told me she was shocked that it was that easy to get somebody with my reputation. They made me feel like Elvis. The best part was telling my wife “That thing you said couldn’t happen just happened.” So there!

    DINNER IS SERVED!

Gluten Free Crab Cakes (small container of fresh claw meat, mixed with one egg, a tad of Old Bay Seasoning and some rice flour. The only kind of rice flour I like is from Chinatown. YSAS brings it up. It is much finer, no crunch left in it.)

Topped with a sunny side egg.

Then heaven on top of that! Gluten Free Hollandaise sauce. Yummmmm. (Two egg yokes blended (in blender) with 1.5 tablespoons of lemon juice. Get frothy. Slowly add 3/4 of a stick of melted butter. Season with chives and pepper. Zoe added salt to hers. I heated the sauce for 10 seconds in the microwave to warm it. Might have gone even a shorter time.)

I thought the sauce would be too lemony, but when put on the everything else? It was heaven on a plate.

We had roasted veggies for appetizers.

    Come and get it!

We don’t have a lot of use for Halloween around here. Our village puts on a huge parade and party for the local kids, so the only ones who come around to the houses are the teenagers who don’t even wear costumes. Most of them are not even from the area.
But last year Halloween was wiped out by a freak blizzard. This year it could be wiped by a hurricane.
    Is there a message here?
