Desert Island Books

“You’re headed to BEA this week?” says Admin.

“Book Expo America,” Spence says. “At the Javits Center.”

“Don’t get lost in there.”

“Also there’s a video with the Association of American Publishers. One of the questions apparently is about what three books you’d want if stranded on a desert island.”

“‘How To Survive on a Desert Island,’ ‘Boat Building 101,’ ‘Navigation for Dummies.'”

“Not sure that’s what they’re after,” Spence says. “I wonder what suggestions we’ll get in the Down Under section.”

Welcome Kade.

Have a great time Spence. Three books is not very many books. Let’s see….The Norton Anthology of the Complete Works of Shakespeare, To The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf, and Thereby Hangs a Tale by Spencer Quinn.

    Good morning all.

    Good morning!
Can we take our Kindl to the desert island?

Rio, there is a package on the mail truck for us. Mom is having the driver take it back to the post office so she can pick it up tomorrow. Can you tell us if that is our quilling ?

Three books? That should make for interesting dialogue today. Pondering.

Still haven’t decided on what books to take to the island.

Just emailed Rebecca to see if we can still get some pretzels. You guys make them hard to resist.

Also went to Amazon and ordered The Market Square Dog, which Dawson had at the boutique. We were too late of buy it, and we thought Lily would like it.

    Greetings All!

Only 3 books, huh? That would be quite a difficult decision. Let me ponder.

Rio: After some serious pant-leg grabbing, what was supposed to be in your e-mail will now be delivered via snail-mail.

Rio – My ski slope home is in a USPS No Mail Delivery zone. So much for that rain, sleet, snow, gloom of night stuff. If I can’t have something delivered to my P.O. box, then I have it sent to Sam’s house.

UPS and Fex Ex have a Smart Post service where they deliver to a post office and then the mail carrier delivers it the rest of the way.

Good morning all. We will take that book on Survival. But we would rather have a book about how to make a flare or other attention getting device. And our third book would be a complete anthology of Agatha Christy.
Once we were completely rested and relaxed from laying around on the beach, playing in the ocean, and eating our fill of tropical delicacies, all the while emersing ourselves into Dame Agatha’s marvelous plotting – then and only then would we read the book that would tell us how to turn coconut shells into colorful flares, guaranteed to attract rescue crafts. (Mama is not much into do-it-yourself boat building)

And now we are off to our own type of desert island – the studio – where there are bears awaiting colorful feathers and bling.

I just wanted you to know that another cat has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. I am in KY and got a call late Saturday night from my house sitter (who is a paramedic)that she thought Patches needed to go to the emergency vet in Fairbanks. Fourteen hours and $800 later the vet and I talked and it was obvious that there would be no positive outcome so I authorized her to put Patches to sleep. I am sure that when I get home the sadness will hit me all over again. She was a very intersting cat as she was semi-feral when I got her. It took months before I could pet her and a couple of years before I could pick her up for a few seconds. Eventually she would sit in my lap for a few minutes but she was most comfortable sitting on the floor by my chair so that I could pet her. I called her my bunny-cat as her fur was like a rabbit’s. I think living in the woods on her own meant that she always thought of herself as prey so was never completely relaxed for any length of time.

    Dad and I had a great visit on the first day I was here but since then he has been pretty confused and/or listless. {{{sigh}}}

Rio’s Friend, please calm him down while we tell youse how and why Kat is in Big Trouble.
When Mom got home from her office yesterday, she found the chewed up pieces of packing from 2 packages. One was a Fiat repair book, and the other was a box of Food Saver (vaccuum sealer) rolls. Neither of these 2 items were disturbed, just their shipping boxes. When Mom read last evening’s blog entries this morning, she was terror-stricken. That is why she called our post office and had them call the postman’s cellphone to tell him to bring the package back to the post office. She is sure that is Rio’s package and she will pick it up tomorrow. There will be no more shipments left at our farm, although she isn’t sure how to relate that to UPS or FedEx.
Bee: we didn’t think about the recharge problem with our Kindle since it holds its charge for so long. Thank you, Melanie, for coming up with the solution for that,

C Hobbit, our hearts go out to you for your loss of a dear loved one, made even more unbearable by happening while you aren’t there. Patches will be meeting many of our feline friends on that there bridge.
Out hearts also go out to you for the anguish and frustration you are going thru with Dad. We are happy you are with hum.

Maggie, tell Barb that Mom made a stir-fry using snow peas and other veggies along with one of the breasts from our chicken roasted on Sunday. She took some of that stir-fry with her for lunch today.

Did anyone else read the new finding about Amelia Earhardt? They now think they safely landed the plane on a smal deserted island and sent out distress signals for quite awhile. At the time they thought the signals were a hoax. With today’s technology they wouldn’t have a problem. How awful!

Mom just got home, and she brought Rio’s friend’s package home with her! The quilling is simply beautiful, and 16-1/2 yr old Sasha thinks the saying is especially appropriate. Thank you for packing so carefully. We can’t figure why a package would be sent from Philly to Lancaster to Oley! That makes no sense whatsoever.

The funny thing is that we also got a UPS package today. Pop put a sign on the barn door before he left for his office this morning:
“UPS and FEDEX please put packages in the third stall on left. New puppy thinks they are chew toys.” Sure enough, that package was in the third stall on left, where those 2 wierd-looking horses, Blue Bell and Midnight, live. Those horses have wheels.

Barb&Magpie: Yes, very sad about Amelia Earhart. That the SOS signals were taken for a hoax is very strange. We understand technology was not the same in those by-gone days, but still.
A research party is scheduled to investigate further details in July.

Rio, Glad the package arrived safe and sound, also loved you E-Claire comment!

Bee, I think the article said something about them searching for a few days, and then they discontinued the search. They didn’t think the signals could be real because they thought the plane had gone down in the water. Now they think they landed on land, and were able to run the plane periodically to recharge the radio batteries, till they eventually ran out of gas. Then the plane slipped off the island in a storm. There are signs that they lived there and ate fish and turtles, catching rain water to drink. Who knows how long.

Did a great deal today even so. The asparagus beds are planted. I am thinking of putting radishes and spinach down the middle of the beds where the asparagus in not.

Mac decided to jump into Zoe’s lap when the fire alarm was misbehaving. Unfortunately, she was in the recliner and instead of her lap he jumped on her chest and then pushed the chair over backwards.

Not sure how long I’m staying up. YSAS called. The rain held off and he pushed a bike up a hill 11 or 12 twelve times. Such is the life of an extra. Then he hopped on his bike and rode to 72nd street where he’s talking to a writer/director about doing the stage reading for his play. That will be the 2nd staged reading for this month.

I’ll put up the flyer from the first tomorrow. Going to veg for a while.

MagPie – Tell Barb that Claire had no time to go out of town so she just picked up something in Buffalo. A month ago Claire visited me in ski country. She was having her annual wedding cake tasting for all the bridezillas who will get married here, some at the top of the mountain. She does about 50 weddings here and then lots more elsewhere. The very next day was the move of her production facilities to the new hotel. I have no idea how she did all that and continued the business. She is always the picture of grace and elegance.

Siber-H – Should we get Claire to make your vedding cake?

“Desert island” means an island uninhabited by humans and it doesn’t have to be a desert. “Deserted island” would mean that the place was once inhabited by humans and is no longer. Thus, “desert island” is the correct image.

Hey, y’all! We were having a little computer trouble before, so we’re late tonight! Seems to be working a little better now — paws crossed!

Mom went to a class today to learn how to be a reading tutor for children who are behind in school. It was a two-hour class, and it went by way too quickly! Mom says she knows enough now to know just how much she doesn’t know — if that makes any sense. It’s much more complicated than Mom realized it would be. Both my girl and boy read early and well — and are still big readers — so the process just seemed so natural to Mom. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come as naturally to everyone. But she loves reading so much, and she sees so many kids who get dragged to the library for some assignment and obviously have absolutely no desire to read anything. She’s hoping maybe she can help a few kids “get” reading, so they’ll enjoy it more.

Kirby!…That is so amazing of your maw!…heh!…Reading did not come easy to my friend. She remembers having the hardest time with the word “it” when she was six years old…chorkel!…They used to sit is reading circles and take turns “reading” out loud. She could never get “it”…sniff!

We didn’t hear the guy at the hardware store use any of those words when he described the fan.

Rio: That’s one of the things Mom learned about today — frequently used words like “the,” “and,” “it,” etc. For children to have any reading fluency, they have to be able to read those words on sight, rather than trying to sound them out. The instructor gave the class some tips on helping children learn those words. It’s amazing how something that seems so simple now can be such a stumbling block for a children who is learning to read. And if they stumble over those blocks and don’t get the help they need, they’re looking at a lifetime of reading agony — or maybe I should say a lifetime of not reading at all. Mom’s looking forward to doing this — it’s something she’s been thinking about for a long time — but at the same time she’s a little scared of the responsibility. It would be awesome to help a child learn to read, but if she fails, she’ll feel awful!

Three books on that desert island: The Bible — to finally take the time to read it cover to cover; Jane Eyre, my favorite book of all times; and The Complete Sherlock Holmes, a whopping 1,122 pages long — still remember that from reading it in seventh grade!

Sorry Spence, your books didn’t make the cut. It wasn’t the quality. They’re way too short — just look how long Gilligan and his friends were shipwrecked!!!

Whew! I spent the evening finishing a project. Since our first race to Nome, I told AJ that someone needs to write a rookie’s guide to the race. When I was in Nome this year, one of the gentleman that I made friends with while I waited for AJ—he kept an eye on me—happens to be on the board of Directors. I mentioned the idea to him and even said I would write it. I thought he was humoring me, but sure enough I received an email from a staff member asking about developing a rookie’s guide. I wrote the draft tonight— of things we wish we would have known, things we muddled through and other things we learned the hard way. I’m glad to check it off my to do list.

SiberH: Lock the what? Oh, the doors!

CHH: I’m sorry to hear about Patches. Loss hurts no matter the distance. You, Patches and your father are in my thoughts and prayers.

Tenzing and I had a long day at the office. He is staying by my side, or am I staying by his while he is feeling less than tip-top.

Good night all. And, Liz, if you’re there—good morning.
