Desert Island Book Choices
Here are Spence’s 3 choices for the Association of American Publishers top 3 desert island books question. Although one of the choices is a trilogy, so maybe it’s 5.
For Whom the Bell Tolls – Ernest Hemingway
The Sword of Honor Trilogy – Evelyn Waugh
Rogue Male – Geoffrey Household (a great thriller with lots of survival info)

This is embarrassing. Mom hasn’t read a single one of these books. Although she read and loved A Farewell To Arms.
9:33 am on June 6th, 2012
Interesting choices. I’m not familiar with the third.
Good morning all.
9:34 am on June 6th, 2012
Hmmphf!…Not one Pug book among ‘um…grunt!
9:37 am on June 6th, 2012
Good Morning Wolfie: No need to be embarrassed. I haven’t read them either. After much pondering, my choices are:
The Agony and the Ecstasy, Irving Stone
I Know This Much Is True, Wally Lamb
All the Chet and Bernie books (counts as one) 🙂
Rio: Thanks for posting the pictures of your friend’s Lil Bouquet project last night. She is totally amazing. Even the Prof was awe-struck looking at the pictures!
9:37 am on June 6th, 2012
Barb has not read any of them either, so you are not alone Wolfie.
BTW, you were in top form last night with your Vera Fang comment.
Vlofgang Puck and Vera Fang, what talent, and how appropriate.
Pate is ok (smooched up liver) as long as it is not foie gras. Barb is violently opposed to foie gras (forced feeding of ducks and geese till their liver is 10 times the normal size).
Wolfie, I am sure you know, living in CA that July 1st is the end of foie gras out there. I think Wolfgang announced several years ago that he would stop offering it, right?

“For Whom the Pug Snorts”
“The Pug of Honor” Trilogy
“Rogue Pug”
Good morning all. It is rainy and cold. I wonder if we will ever see the sun again.
Patsy had a cushion of blankets last night. She spent some of the night there. Then she got into bed. Have no idea how that happened. She wasn’t ON the bed she was under the sheet and blanket!
Both of us got sleep. Thank Dog!
9:38 am on June 6th, 2012
Greetings All!
Yes, Wolfie, that Vera Fang was a good one!
9:40 am on June 6th, 2012
Melanie!…Now we’re cooking with gas…snort!
Wolfie!…heh!snort!heh!…Vera Fang!…I’m still chorkeling over that one…wheeze!
9:43 am on June 6th, 2012
Rogue!…I hear Rogue Pug is a real thriller as a way-ward black pug fights for survival on the rough streets of suburbia…snort!
9:44 am on June 6th, 2012
Did anyone see the movie Midnight in Paris, Woodie Allen directed? The main character is considering marriage and he and his fiance’s parents are in Paris. He time travels back to the 20s and meets Hemingway, F.Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Picaso and a bunch of others. It was quite entertaining, and Hemingway was a hoot.
9:44 am on June 6th, 2012
I thought about “Rogue Male” for YSAS, but it was written in 1930 something. He was one of those kids Kirby T’s mom is learning to help. The writing from that ear is too, hmmm, jam-packed for him to get any understanding out of what he’s reading.
His neurologist thought he’d never learned to read. Well, shuck some corn, he did! He’s very good with plays and screenplays. The action and words are separated and he just fills in the rest with his imagination.
KirbyT. Don’t know if you could do it, but there are Reading Therapy dogs. Eleanor was one before she found it difficult to get around. The children would read out load to her. She didn’t care if they got it wrong, so they were under no pressure. Also they pet her when they read. What could be better than that?
9:46 am on June 6th, 2012
I hate auto correction.
9:48 am on June 6th, 2012
Is Rogue Pug available thru B & N? That one is going to the top of our reading list.
9:51 am on June 6th, 2012
I’ve always loved the fairy tale, Snow White and the Seven Pugs….
9:51 am on June 6th, 2012
Our ears write too, Melanie. Also our tomatoes. heh heh
Barb and Maggie, our mom is also violently opposed to fois gras.
We have not read any of Admin’s books, nor a lot of the others youse are mentioning.
We would want all Jane Austen books, because they are the few books we like to read and re-read. We don’t usually like to read books we’ve already read or watch movies we’ve already seen.
Another book we like to read over and over is “The Last Confederate Widow Tells All”, so we’ll take that.
And we can read C&B books til the cows come home, so we will take all of them (counts as one).,
We loved Midnight in Paris.
9:57 am on June 6th, 2012
Abrahams!….We here have read all of the Charming Mr. Abrahams books except for these four….snort!…
The Fury of Rachel Monette
Tongues of Fire
Red Message
Hard Rain
Borrow!… So if any of youse have one or all of these books we’d love to borrow them from you…grunt!
9:58 am on June 6th, 2012
Barb: I saw Midnight in Paris at a theater when it first came out. I enjoyed it.
I’m going to Amazon to look up the third book.
9:59 am on June 6th, 2012
Oleys, Your mom and mine are definitely on the same page on many, many issues! Snicker.
10:06 am on June 6th, 2012
I had to go back and see the Vera Fang remark. Hilarious Wolfie.
I have been reading the Sookie Stackhouse (southern vampire) books that Rebecca sent me and I have only one question. Is Vera Fang a Vampire designer? Heh.
I decided that the gluten free snacks I would bring to the quilt club on Thursday will be root-beer floats. Heh. Or, your choice, Vernor’s Ginger Ale floats.
It was hot yesterday when I decided this. Unfortunately the forecast for Thursday is high 70’s and thunderstorms, but I think we will need cheering up then, so the root-beer floats will still be a good idea. They are definately happy food.
10:15 am on June 6th, 2012
Staff!…That was the photo I was thinking about …grunt!
10:20 am on June 6th, 2012
Rose!…If you guys think making the flower buds last night was exciting wait till you see the actual flower…heh!…Coming up either tonight or tomorrow night…sniff!…Depends on how much time her mother allows her to work on it without interupting her about some other mindless activity…grunt!
10:30 am on June 6th, 2012
Rio: Can’t wait! It’s so interesting to see the work in progress, and then be able to admire the finished product.
Would your friend ever consider putting quilling instructions on YouTube?
10:35 am on June 6th, 2012
Rose!…No! – Theres enough garbage out there already…sniff!
10:39 am on June 6th, 2012
Rio: Garbage! I would not consider what your friend does garbage. I would definitely watch your friend giving instruction on-line.
11:02 am on June 6th, 2012
Rouge Male sounds like a good book to read. (I constructed that sentence for a certain someone on this blog.)
What war does “For Whom the Bell Tolls” take place in…World War I or the Spanish Civil War? I might want to read it.
Hey Rio, I like Rose’s idea of quilling on youtube because how the art is done very interesting. Quilling isn’t garbage.
I had to blink several times this morning when I saw the final score of the Rockies game. GAH
T&G are correct. Farmington is a fur piece from me, but I like that part of the state.
11:04 am on June 6th, 2012
Rose!…What i meant is there is enough videos about how to twirl paper out there already…grunt!…No one needs any more in my opinion…heh!
11:17 am on June 6th, 2012
Ray Bradbury has died.
11:19 am on June 6th, 2012
Gasp!…Ray Bradbury!…sob!
11:20 am on June 6th, 2012
Rebecca is writing a guide for Iditarod rookies. What a totally excellent idea! All these Idiatrod years and no one has thought of doing this (as far as I know) before Rebecca came along. It will be much appreciated by the rookies.
Vera Fang….very funny Wolfie.
11:22 am on June 6th, 2012
Ray Bradbury? sob He will be missed.
11:26 am on June 6th, 2012
The sun is ducking in and out from behind the clouds. Might be able to put a few more things in the gardens.
Ummm, do tomatoes like water? Mine are look anemic. I haven’t been watering them. Nature is deluging them. Any help?
Staff, I remember reading one of the Sookie Stackhouse books and enjoying it.
I am still waiting to find out to whom I send “Winter Dance” and “The Ice Palace Murders”. Any takers?
11:28 am on June 6th, 2012
Mom is working from home today, and there are 3 men here doing lots of work and making lots of noise. We are finally getting air conditioning ! Mom keeps telling us not to get our hopes up…she won’t be using it much. We say … “we’ll see”.
11:29 am on June 6th, 2012
Melanie, tomatoes do not like waters on their leaves. Too much rain is very bad for them, unfortunately. The answer is to plant them where morning sun will dry them as quickly as possible. We use soaker hoses for watering so as not to get their leaves wet. Rain cannot be helped though.
11:30 am on June 6th, 2012
Hi everyone –
Wolfie – we heard that Natasha also has Ruff Lauren doing the tuxedos. She had to have someone custom design a tux for a certain member of the wedding party whose neck is bigger than his head.
Then again – the Rockies did lose last night……….
11:31 am on June 6th, 2012
Well, dang! Loved “Martian Chronicles”. I found it in our library when I was younger than 10. It wasn’t called that though.
11:34 am on June 6th, 2012
We here must be semi-illiterate. Have not read Ray Bradbury, but then we don’t read much sci-fri, which I believe he is mostly know for (sorry Bee). Also, he was 91, not a bad age at which to go.
11:35 am on June 6th, 2012
Ray Bradbury – The author of the infamous Fahrenheit 451 – RIP. Ironically, a book about banning books was itself banned at one point. Why? Bad words and the burning of the Bible were 2 of the reasons mentioned.
Barb&Magpie: We loved Midnight in Paris. One of the better Woody Allen films.
Wolfie: The Vera Fang comment was a classic!
Rudely awakened at 5 am with a fire alarm chirping in our ears, nap-time can’t be far behind.
11:36 am on June 6th, 2012
Lose!….The Rockies didn’t “lose” – they were demolished…grump!grumble!growl!
11:39 am on June 6th, 2012
Tupper&Gilly: Ruff Lauren! Youse guys are a hoot.
11:41 am on June 6th, 2012
Melanie, We don’t water the tomatoes very often. An occasional deep watering is better, as it promotes deeper root growth. Too much water and the plants develop a mineral deficiency, so don’t overdo. If you have them in a spot where there is not good drainage and the roots are standing in soggy soil, not good.
11:45 am on June 6th, 2012
We love Vera Fang, Volfgang Puck, and Ruff Lauren. Youse guys crack us up!
11:53 am on June 6th, 2012
SH: LOL! The sentence is constructed very well indeed. Thank you.
11:56 am on June 6th, 2012
SH: (Forgot)–For Whom the Bell Tolls is set during the Spanish Civil War (1936 – 1939).
12:00 pm on June 6th, 2012
Thanks Stover…I know less about the Spanish Civil War than the two World Wars. Maybe I will read it.
12:03 pm on June 6th, 2012
Sorry but could someone please explain the Vera Fang comment to me.
12:04 pm on June 6th, 2012
SH: A Farewell to Arms is my favorite Hemingway but For Whom the Bell Tolls is also very good.
12:08 pm on June 6th, 2012
All I know is she is a famous clothes designer. Her real name is Vera Wang, I think. I don’t know if she is alive or gone to Rainbow Bridge.
12:13 pm on June 6th, 2012
One of Virginia Woolf’s nephews, Julian Bell, was killed in the Spanish Civil War. He was British but felt that he had to fight for the republic. I believe he was an ambulance driver. His death nearly did in his mother, Vanessa. Woolf had to take care of her for months.
12:20 pm on June 6th, 2012
Ruff Lauren….LOL!
12:28 pm on June 6th, 2012
Ruff Lauren, Vera Fang….Okay, I guess I get it.
Vera Wang was born in 1949 and is still living.
12:39 pm on June 6th, 2012
Strange, but when I first read Vera Fang it looked purrfectly normal to me. Must have something to do with the mind’s built-in auto-correct when reading the blog.
The ailing smoke detector has finally given up the ghost. A new battery is on Mom’s shopping list.
12:59 pm on June 6th, 2012
Bee, Vera Wang is a top designer, world famous in fact. She designs a lot of expensive wedding dresses, and has a full line of designer clothing. Ralph Loren is also a famous men’s and wonen’s clothing designer. Ruff and Fang are a comic alteration of their names for blog purposes. Oh our Bee is so sheltered!
1:09 pm on June 6th, 2012
Here is another tomato tip that Barb learned from her dad and grandfather, both avid gardeners.
Besides planting the tomoto plant several inches deeper than it was currently growing in its little pot, Barb also “suckers” her plant for quite awhile into the growing season.
What is suckering you might ask? It is pinching off and removing the little shoots that come up between the main stalk and the side branches. So everwhere there is a “V” you take off that little “sucker”. She lets a few grow, and make sure to never, never take off the top of the plant. By doing this you don’t get a huge bushy plant, but rather a taller one. With this method the plant puts more energy into producing fruits and not into foliage.
1:17 pm on June 6th, 2012
Barb: Bee is either sheltered or not rich enough to buy designer clothes!
1:34 pm on June 6th, 2012
Thanks for the tip, Barb. We will have to look for suckers…we hear there is one born every minute.
1:36 pm on June 6th, 2012
Barb&Magpie: Never have heard of “suckering” a tomato plant! Thank you for these tips. They will be very helpful for her tiny garden.
O.Howlers: LOL!
1:49 pm on June 6th, 2012
you just throw those suckers my way. I know how to deal with them
1:55 pm on June 6th, 2012
I had heard of planting the tomato plant deeper. But never the part about removing the suckers. Huh.
You learn something every day on this blog.
BBL must nap.
Oh, I keep forgetting. Dawson, I have the ALOHA stamps for you.
1:56 pm on June 6th, 2012
PT…heh heh. there are lots of suckers out there!
2:03 pm on June 6th, 2012
Whew, I have bagged the tomato plants for the afternoon. This should help with the rain we’re expecting. Can’t help the roots getting soaked. Mother Nature is taking care of that one. Suckering, eh? I will do that tomorrow.
I’ve got little tiny lettuces growing out da ground! snicker!
Well, actually in the gutter, and it’s only one type so far, but for me? That’s excellent. Planted my yellow squash. Dug a trench to put in Bachelor Buttons. (Don’t ask me . . the seeds were free) I’ll be putting in Bachelor Buttons, radishes and spinach tomorrow if the sun shines at all.
Discovered lots of rocks. Big rocks, little rocks . .
It is now time to rest my back. Heating pad here I come!
(To think we have PTBarnum here . . wow!)
2:07 pm on June 6th, 2012
Forgot . . . tomorrow we are getting an Apple AirPort Extreme router. What is that? It’s what will make our network. How? By Tony our Mac doc.
He’s coming on Friday. So we’ll be getting our network up and running again.
He’s ALSO going to see why I can’t burn a DVD. Hopefully he’ll fix it and I’ll be able to do something for the MMMMMMSSSS.
2:20 pm on June 6th, 2012
PTBarnum!…What a Clown!…snort!
2:35 pm on June 6th, 2012
Wow is right! Hello to PT.
2:54 pm on June 6th, 2012
Rio and Pepper up top….
PT: I like that one! 🙂

http://youtu.be/SrQ2Yiy0X3s
Now I have to go hide….gurgle! sniff!
3:20 pm on June 6th, 2012
Rio — I’ve got all four. I’d offer to rush them over to you via the Wookiemobile, but it is in for repairs (the hot wings cooker shorted out the battery again), so I will place them in the mail to you prontito.
Your pal Wookie
3:28 pm on June 6th, 2012
Beau! Snort.
We watched Melanie’s Masterpiece…A Plunderer’s Love Note to Snowhook…over on Chet’s facebookie page…once again, with tears in our eyes. Sob.
3:29 pm on June 6th, 2012
Wookie!…At first when you said you “had all four” I thought you meant Paws…heh!snort!…Now I realize you mean The Charming Mr. Abrahams first four books…WOOOOOO!WOOOOOO!…This is great news!
3:30 pm on June 6th, 2012
Beau – Thank you for posting that video. Rio shows great perserverance and boy! can he sure make a fuss.
3:36 pm on June 6th, 2012
MollysMom!…That is not me on that video…grunt!…Beau is making stuff up again…wheeze!
3:39 pm on June 6th, 2012
Beau, thanks for posting that video. Look around for more! 🙂
3:42 pm on June 6th, 2012
Rio: If that’s not you in the video it must be your evil twin.
3:43 pm on June 6th, 2012
Beau, That is a cute video and, guys, don’t listen to Rio because that is Rio in the video.
YEEP I’ve said this before…Rio has the focus of a Border Collie.
3:52 pm on June 6th, 2012
We took a little nap, and look what we missed on the blog. LOL
Even PT had a comment.
Melanie, you got a lot done today. And in the gardening spirit, when you said Apple I thought tree.
Now for some mowing. BBL
4:06 pm on June 6th, 2012
Actually, I did plant a Gala Apple tree before the wedding. It is doing great.
Pouring again. . .
4:12 pm on June 6th, 2012
Just for kicks I Googled this “how to sucker a tomato plant”.
Third link down was Pruning Tomatoes – A Fine Gardening Article. What followed was a great article by a Ferrindino, I believe. He talks about suckering and also some nice information on heirlooms. He shows a picture of pruning a larger sucker with shears, but I take it off when small, by just turning it sideways – it comes right off.
Now I really have to get back on the riding mower.
4:22 pm on June 6th, 2012
Rio! That tongue…Priceless !
Thanks for posting it, Beau.
4:29 pm on June 6th, 2012
Rio’s tongue is as curly as his tail.
4:51 pm on June 6th, 2012
Grump!
5:02 pm on June 6th, 2012
Rio: Don’t worry. I wouldn’t pull your tongue because it’s too close to your teeth and you would bite me. I would still like to pull your tail.
5:07 pm on June 6th, 2012
Back in for a sec. Rio, Your friend says “All gone”. That is a key phrase around here too. It could mean treats are gone or something I was hunting is gone and to stop obsessing over it. I like your yeep! And just whose piggies are those anyway?
5:24 pm on June 6th, 2012
Oh yes, Mr. Smarty Pug, that video is you, you, you.
Don’t forget that I also have in my possession another video of you begging. Rose has it too.
5:49 pm on June 6th, 2012
Rio: Indeed I do have the other video of you begging. Now if only Beau could find the one of you and Pepper…..
5:52 pm on June 6th, 2012
Videos!…Where do all these videos come from?…grump!
5:53 pm on June 6th, 2012
Rio, if I may sing to you….
That face, that face
That marvelous face
I never should begin
Those cheeks, that neck, that chin
Will surely do me in
I must be smart
And hide my heart
That face, that face
That lovable face
Your tongue does kill me, though. Can you grab flies out of the air with your tongue?
5:57 pm on June 6th, 2012
Rockies!…Are playing the Snakes again tonight…grump!…Somehow that doesn’t make me feel any better…sniff!
6:06 pm on June 6th, 2012
We say that if that isn’t Rio in the video, it must be the NICE twin!
giggle
6:07 pm on June 6th, 2012
I know, I know, but two nights ago the Rockies shut the snakes out. There is hope.
6:28 pm on June 6th, 2012

Downstairs!…I’m downstairs where it is safe….heh!…Beau is upstairs – good riddance!…sniff!
9:00 pm on June 6th, 2012
Stay safe Rio!
Signing off here to grab some chow then watch a movie – Bear
9:07 pm on June 6th, 2012
Quiet!….No one is around and Bear has gone off to eat again and sleep….sniff!….So maybe this is a good time to post the next steps in making a Lil’ Bouquet….heh!…Please refrain from commenting till you see a finished little flower, if you can….snort!
9:08 pm on June 6th, 2012

9:22 pm on June 6th, 2012
OK, I waited till you were done as requested, so now let me say AMAZING! I had no idea each step was that involved.
9:25 pm on June 6th, 2012
Rio, how does she do the rolling of the paper?
9:28 pm on June 6th, 2012
Sammie!….Very carefully!…heh!heh!
9:31 pm on June 6th, 2012
Barb took the word amazing right out of my mouth. I had no idea either there is that much to quilling. I couldn’t do it, but I am having fun learning about it.
Rose will enjoy the newest photos.
We are watching Dogs in the City while waiting for the baseball game to start. Two out of the three dog owners are sickening. bah
9:31 pm on June 6th, 2012
Sammie!….Seriously, in her starter kit there was a little tool called a “Slotted Tool”… snort!…It took a while for her to figure out how to use the dern thing. Getting the paper in the little slot was the hardest and still is sometimes…heh!….Maybe she will take a photo of her little tool tomorrow….grunt!…She is done for the evening and we are going to watch the game together….Wooooo!…I think popcorn is in my near future….snuffle!
9:48 pm on June 6th, 2012
Siber, We watched the new dog show last week, but it wasn’t very interesting. More dumb people than anything. Sad that so many dogs and cats are subjected to people that do not a clue about how to relate to their companion.
Think we will say good night. Barb has office duty tomorrow, but CL has been very pleasant since Barb told her “the kids” wanted her to cancel the listing.
10:02 pm on June 6th, 2012
I don’t think we will try watching that program again either, Barb. You are right, it isn’t very interesting.
This baseball game is speeding right along so far.
10:06 pm on June 6th, 2012
Prediction!…I predict there will be no 30 – 40 minute innings durin this game…heh!heh!…Thank dawg!
Power!…If I leave suddenly and forever its because the rain – hail – tornado has finally arrived…grunt!….Her mother and Beau are keeping watch upstairs…wuffle!
10:25 pm on June 6th, 2012
Checking!….I’m still here…sniff!…But no one else is around I guess…grunt!….Maybe the bad weather went around us, or it is waiting till we go to bed and then it will strike….wheeze!
10:41 pm on June 6th, 2012
I’m here…glad you are still with us, Rio.
10:48 pm on June 6th, 2012
Here!…I’m still here! I’m still watching this painful game…grunt!…How can they be losing again Zero ta 5 against the Snakes?…grump!…What the hell is going on with these guys?…sniff!
10:59 pm on June 6th, 2012
Strike!…Even Cuddyer is striking out…wheeze!….Wait, Giambi finally hits the ball…gasp!…There will NOT be a No-Hitter tonight against the Rockies….snort!…Thats a relief!
11:04 pm on June 6th, 2012
And, there will not be another shutout against the Rockies.
11:09 pm on June 6th, 2012
Moyer has signed to a minor league deal. I hope it works out for him.
11:15 pm on June 6th, 2012
Moyer!…That guy can’t stop playing baseball!…heh!…What a nice guy. We learned a lot about him the short time he was here…snuffle!
11:32 pm on June 6th, 2012
Rio, We are all alone here on the blog. Where is everyone?
Natasha gets quiet whe the Rockies are losing. This has been a peaceful evening even if the baseball game sucks.
We are turning in. Hope the weather has gone around you, Rio
Rebecca! Lock your doors!
Night All
