Decatur Wrap-Up

“Anyone throw anything at you?” says Admin.

“Nope,” says Spence. “How about at you?”

“Nothing that connected,” says Admin. “I hear there was a bit of a surprise over your way.”

“Not a bad one,” says Spence. “And it worked out well for Kirby T. Penworthy and Co.”

“Nice meeting her, huh?”

“A highlight.”

    HIP! HIP! HURRAH!!!!!!!!!

Can not wait to hear the story! So Admin is PA?

Riö, thanks for sharing the first few pages of TFAT. Sniff, I will have to tell Dan. He is an avid listener to the Blog.

Melanie: I forgot to say yesterday how superb OTAS's pictures are. I had never heard of the method of "pointillism" using ink (?), only paint. Wish I could see them "in person."

Thanks B.Stover: What is interesting is that the bull picture is actually much larger than the cowboy picture. The Bulls are 12 by 18 inches while the cowboy is only 6 by 9, if I"m remembering correctly.

The Bulls took forever to do . . . which is why hid did the cowboy in an ink wash.

We can't wait to hear all about the Book Fair and how Kirby's mom got to meet SQ! And how cool for Rio to have that early release of the much anticipated book 3! We guess that means that SQ does read our blog once in a while…what a cool acknowledgment to us. Although not as verbose as some of you (time restrictions due to work) we always try to read Chet's posts and catch most of the regular's musings. We've been regulars almost from the very beginning and love how it has evolved and the numerous topics that get covered. We must be alot like Chet….off in whatever direction the wind takes us!

Spence: Glad nothing got thrown at you. Between Rio and Kirby's Mom the blog is awash in blessings right now and I'm sure they will expand exponentially throughout the universe.

Kirby T's Mom: You are sooo lucky. It worked out well for you and I'm hope AbbieKitty is right when she suggest TFAT well.

FK, We go to breakfast in our kitchen silly!

But since I am upstairs blogging I have to 'go' downstairs.

We would give you yummy fresh tomato toast.

Mr Staff has just been up to move the Bernina 830 from it's desk to it's carrying case so he can move it to the car. Staff will be quilting the quilt on it today and tomorrow. Depending on how long it takes.

She and her quilting buddies are having a 'lock in'. That is when they get the key from Faye (of Faye's Henhouse Quilt Shop) and go play in the quilt shop all day (and all night if they have the strength). Otherwise the shop is closed. Don't you wish you had your own private quilt shop to play in Debbie LM? It is way too much fun.

FK: I actually think we had this discussion once before on this blog. It's "bated" breath and it derives from Middle English…a variation of "abate." To hold your breath in anticipation; to breathe abnormally due to emotion.

I hope Kirby did get a copy of TFAT.

    The quilt!!!

Rio, I don't think they hurt squirrels, but they are known for attacking goats. When you have time, google Chupacabra. You'll see video and still photos. Unlike Big Foot, they do have dead bodies of alleged Chupacabras. Be warned, they are ugly. I bet Macy knows about them. Most reports of them come from Texas.

I am very embarrassed to say that they are called the Lobos. A pack of real wolves, the four-legged kind, could play better football than these dudes. It got so bad last year, that attendance at their games could be counted on one hand.

  72. Mollypop
    1:44 pm on September 5th, 2010

Rio – We don't need a festival to eat chicken wings. They started at the Anchor Bar and Duffs' wings are equal to them. Last year there was a contest between the two and Duffs won by one vote.

We just head to Duffs which is not far from us and pig out. They come in mild, medium, hot, and suicidal. With Rooties blue cheese dip. Any of that other fancy stuff they do just isn't the real thing.

Mom and I are in Ellicottville, the ski/golf resort town, and they serve wings here. They are not the real thing but people here don't know that. We do.

Fleas!….Rockie the Under-Cover Squirrel has fleas??? …snort!…This is news to me, but I should have guessed because he does tend to eat and drink too much and fall asleep in restaurant alley ways where they keep the trash….grunt! …Damn his hide!

180,000 chickens! Barb's chickens have gone into witness protection for the time being. And her goats are on the look out for those chupacabras, but I don't think they travel this far north. Those guys might be more of a challenge for me than rats (which I have not had a hit on lately, by the way).

    Kirby, where are you?

  97. Riö - The Evil

  98. Barb & Maggie
    3:42 pm on September 5th, 2010

About 30 chickens, but I am sworn to secrecy as to their where- abouts! Some are bantums, so they probably are carrying only 1/4 lbs. of wings.

  99. Riö - The Evil
    3:47 pm on September 5th, 2010

Heck!…She only has approximately 12.5 pounds of chicken wings in her Coop Witness Protection Asylum…heh!… Only a meal for 3 or 4 guys who love Wings!

Rio – I'm not sure about your chicken calculation. The web site still has last year's stats – too soon for an update – but that was 27 tons of wings = 500,000.

They said this year it was 45 tons of wings!

I find this chicken wing discussion distasteful.

Staff is back from quilting so she can get some nap time. She says she has all the blocks outlined and it working on the centers of the blocks. She only has 3 rows left to do. The binding is made and ready to sew on as soon as the quilting is done.

Then the geegaw's will go on and then she will have to look for a suitable box.

maybe she will eat first and then read in bed for a while. Mmmmm sounds like a plan.

    Kirby! Kirby! Kirby!

    Hope he gets online soon.

Ok, Mollypop, what is the 500,000? Is that wing pieces? There would be 4 wing pieces per chicken. The wing is actually 3 pieces, but the last, most outer part is discarded.

    Sorry Abbie.

    Still no Kirby. . .

I've fed and cleaned up after relatives that came to see Dan. I'm exhausted.

Good news is Dan is waking up even more. Cool. Hope all the good small steps continue through the night.

Too bad we weren't having chicken wings. That would have been easier.

    Staff you are magnificent!

Not sure anyone saw the comment I put up about the web series "You Make My Dreams Come True." (It was right before Riö's TFAT arrived.) Here's the link for the first episode. Relatives just laughed and laughed when they saw all three of them.

    4:39 pm on September 5th, 2010

MagPie! That might be the answer to our calculations – a chicken wing comes in two types. There's the farthest end and then there's a meatier end. So that's like 4 (pieces of) wings per chicken.

    Sorry A-Kat.

Siber H, I think they market the whole chicken (in parts) for human consumption – companies like Perdue market most of their chickens as parts, breast being the most popular, then thighs, then legs. Wing are probably sold mostly as snack wings.

Molly, You are right, there are 2 parts; first the part closer to the body which some refer to as a drummy and then the longer, thinner part that has 2 bones in it.

Rio, even though they don't fly, they probably need to keep all of their body parts to survive.

Rio – Thanks but no extra poundage for Mom. She's trying to get ready for ski season. She had knee surgery last fall and is working hard to be able to do one more year in Safety Patrol. They're part of Ski Patrol but with minimal first aid. She helps direct traffic around accidents and keeps the ski hills safe from the rowdies.

From Kirby's Mom: I'm back! Just pulled in after two exciting days at the Decatur Book Festival! There's a lot to report, but the most important thing is I GOT IT!!! Spence didn't realize it, but the publisher apparently gave permission to release TFAT early at the book festival. So book three is autographed — it says Plunder On! — and sitting beside me. I've only been able to read a few pages so far, but so far so good, as they say!

  138. Kirby T. Penworthy
    7:44 pm on September 5th, 2010

From Kirby's Mom (again): I just caught up reading what I missed. Sorry I disappointed you by not reporting in earlier, but I stayed at the festival until the last presentation got over at 5, then I went a little out of my way going home so I could stop at Clemson and have dinner with my college girl! And the only laptop in the household belongs to my son, and I wouldn't dream of depriving him of it for the whole weekend, even for your benefit — I think he would go into withdrawal!

So here's a quick update: I did see PA and SQ both. He was actually wearing two author badges — one for each name. After PA's presentation I went to the book-signing, and introduced myself. He stood right up, shook my hand and thanked me for coming. Then he called over his wife and son — Seth lives in Atlanta — and told them I was one of the bloggers. His wife asked which one, and when he mentioned Kirby's name she seemed to know exactly who that was. Later, when I went to the SQ presentation, he came over and sat with me before his speech started. Then during his speech he talked about the blog, and told the audience that I was there. He also talked about the blog and the quilt — but I'll give a more detailed report about that later.

    Some highlights:

    * Yes, PA and SQ wore different "costumes" — although neither of them involved the tin man or any of our other suggestions!

    * SQ was absolutely amazed that the copies of TFAT had been supplied to the festival — he told me he had only gotten two copies himself. In fact, during his presentation he did his reading from his Advanced Readers Copy. When I mentioned that everyone — especially Rio — would be jealous that I already had my copy, he said he had already sent a copy to Rio.

    * It's interesting that Rio mentioned the cover, and how it feels different than the other two. During the SQ talk someone asked him about his favorite cover — which is the one from Thereby Hangs a Tail, by the way — and he said that the TFAT cover is on some kind of special paper that has a suede feel to it, and that each cover costs 6 cents!

OK, enough for now. I'll post more — and some pics — tomorrow.
