Daizee: Another Story From The Nation Within

“Isn’t there something a little like this in book 5?” says Admin.

“A very little,” Spence says. “It’s more of a tangential hit, one of those scene-exiting frissons.”

“Sounds not uninteresting,” says Admin.

“Thanks.”

That is cool. I know a certain dog who does just that!

Sorry, Riö, I’m going to have to wait for my body to catch up with the “youngsters”.

BearSpiritDog: Let me know how that creating more Time goes. I could use some of that. I’ve always loved the idea of the hourglass that is used in book 3 of Harry Potter to turn back time.

Staff: I looked it up in some of my many books, and Oh My Dog! We are related! Just wanted you to know! snickering

That is one fantasical beautiful quilt!

    HI DAWSON!!!

    Good Morning,
When I opened the blog the last time, I also opened a can of worms. I’m sure that my post today will not anger anyone. Rebecca and I have discussed the pictures that I submitted to her store. They have had some favorable comments, but none have been sold. The listed price is what I’ve been selling them for in my gallery for a long time, but since there is no gallery overhead in this situation and all of the money will go to Snowhook, we’ve decided to drop the price by 20% to $40.00 each or two for $75.00 for those of you who can’t decide which one of two you like better. If any of you want to combine your orders the reduction will apply to multiples shipped to one address, and the purchasers will be responsible for the additional shipping after the order is split.

I forgot to mention the fact that in order to avoid confusion at the Mercantile, any orders placed for my photographs at the new price should be placed by email to Rebecca. That way she doesn’t have to modify her boutique page.

“Not uninteresting.” I love that phrase.

I love purple. In fact, I’ve ordered two of Bella’s gaiters to be lined with “true purple”.

YSAS just called. His fingers don’t want to work. He’s not used to all that yard work that F, OTAS and he did over the weekend.

All of them are very proud of what they accomplished. As well they should be! Most of the pictures I received yesterday were of brush piles. They still haven’t completely cleared the land of all the downed limbs. The back back yard still has limbs down. I told them they could call that part a wildlife sanctuary! The birds, bunnies and chipmunks will enjoy the area.

They had so much downed wood they ended with way more than they could use and found out that they could put piles for the town to pick up.

    Proud mom here!

I’ve been thinking about something in the books( this is kinda random). The last book it was kinda implied that Chet had puppies, which means he’s not neutered. I have a heard time believing Bernie who loves animals and is so concerned about the water wouldn’t get his dog neutered.

Just wanted to get that off my chest.

  14. BearSpiritDog
    10:21 am on November 8th, 2011

Nooooooo! My last comment is gone. This is just cruel, Blog Moderator! Especially since it came without warning. Ahem…I will try again without the link.

Samantha: A good question – one which Spence or Bernie no doubt will have an answer.

  15. BearSpiritDog
    10:44 am on November 8th, 2011

Hmm…still not working…there’s something about the link.

Then I shall quote a line or two (there’s more than one way to ____ a kat. On second thought…that may not be a good analogy)

Ahem…To Dawson, Melanie, Nana and all those who like Purple…a few lines from the famous poem:

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we have no money for butter.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other peoples’ gardens
    And learn to spit.

But, maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Sorry, folks, the blog would not accept the link, so about 3 stanzas are missing (sigh)

    Daizee Grace is a cutie.
    Yes!
My bedroom is indeed a lovely shade of purple. I had a can of pink that I was going to paint a room with but when I got it home it just seemed too pink. I mixed it with some blue I’d gotten at a clearance sale and voila! Purple! I was a bit scared to do it but I knew I could always paint it with the cantaloupe color I have left over if I really hated it. It turned out wonderful. I still have to paint the trim, so I’m not quite done. Purple was grandma’s favorite color and it is mine too.
I will go shopping at the MMS once I’m settled in and the grocery shopping is done. I see several things I would like…

Samantha and BearSpiritDog: About Chet and being intact. cough cough.

    Pulling out my soap box.

First: (AND I WILL NEVER REPEAT THIS AGAIN, I’VE NEVER SAID IT AND IF YOU SAY I DID YOU ARE LYING) Chet and Bernie are fictional characters.

Second: Bernie is a guy. I have noticed that “guys” can be unwilling to have their dogs neutered. Though when our puppy owners realize what having an intact male Newfoundland dog can do (mayhem, in a purely loving way) being 160 pounds, the “guys” become more willing to let their male pets be neutered.,

Third: Chet is an all male detective! This means, as in our Noir Detective background in the US, that Chet is a hit among ladies. To do this he must be intact.

Fourth: Having Chet intact only adds to the story lines of the books. Oh, the trouble he can get into!

Fifth: Chet, as narrator, brings an interesting counterpoint of The Nation Within The Nation’s view vs Bernies and Susie’s relationship.

So no, Chet should not be neutered.

Do I think that if you are a responsible pet owner you should have both males and females fixed. Without doubt.

As responsible breeders we tell what it is like to have intact pets. And we tell the truth! Puppies are grand and loving and wonderful and sweet and joys from Heaven. Their parents? Love them to bits! But since we have had both of our males neutered after having many pups each (if we had kept them intact, there would have been inbreeding) the house is a LOT calmer.

We still have two females out of our nine dogs that are intact. Twice a year it is an “interesting time” here.

Bowing and stepping off my soap box.

    Melanie,
It took me a while to figure out why you thought you were related to me. Slow this morning I guess. It could be though. Way back the Elliot’s (Maggie’s family) came from New England.

  20. Melanie
    11:28 am on November 8th, 2011

Laughing here Staff! I was sort of awake this morning. Hoping I remain awake today. It would be nice.

That really is a very beautiful quilt. I showed it to Zoë and she was amazed.

Our ancestors from Dan’s family (two brothers) had been through New England and then went to other areas. One went south to Virginia. Quite near where we ended up for awhile. Another went through to Hadley, MA quite near where we are now.

    Weird.

Zoë’s side of the family came from Ireland to Iowa.

Dan’s ancestors were prolific, Zoë’s not so much. 🙂

    11:28 am on November 8th, 2011

Melanie: Nana here. I know of what (cough) Mayhem you speak; sadly, by personal experience. If I had only known you years ago…but then again…what great Adventures we would have been deprived of. As to the male viewpoint (ie: the opinion of the dad in the family) need we add this was the reason for the decision to keep a certain someone intact?

  22. Siber-H
    11:35 am on November 8th, 2011

Melanie just explained the intact thing very well.
Since this is fiction and there is going to be a puppy in the next book, Chet needs to be, well, Chet. This is one of the joys of fiction We can get really excited about a new puppy in the book.

I don’t think Chet being an uneutered male is going to influence readers of the books to not spay and neuter their pets. I don’t know how to say this kindly, but the irresponsible pet owners I have run across in my life (they are legion) don’t read books. I’m only speaking about my experiences in NM. Many, many, responsible pet owners don’t read books either, but they do know how to do the right thing by their animals.

That is a neat story about the lab and the little girl. I hope this medical help from dogs will be happening more and more. I think it will.

  24. BearSpiritDog
    12:14 pm on November 8th, 2011

Siber-h: Someone here discovered too late the wisdom of this. Nana was convinced to do otherwise by an adamant male member of the family when still in my puppy stage. My dad convinced her it changes the dog’s personality and they lose their spunk. (Strange coming from one whose family had raised Irish Setters when he was growing up) Those comments and seeing a picture of one looking very familiar in a v-e-t’s office. (it was supposed to be an advertisement for being a responsible pet owner, but she took one look at the uncanny resemblance to this guy and said no thanks) Now, of course, she knows better. Guess we will never know how many little Bears are running around out there. Heh.

    12:40 pm on November 8th, 2011

Ahem – excuse me -Gilly here, being serious for once.
I’m not usually the one to do the talking here, but Tupper is very modest. So I am borrowing Melanie’s soap box for a minute.

We love the story about Daizee-Grace because Tupper is a DAD herself. She came to live with Mama after Mama’s beloved Peabody (also a Corgi DAD) went for a stroll over the Rainbow Bridge. And yes, she has saved Mama’s life a couple of times. We are just so pleased to see more people learning about DAD dogs because they can do such important things.
Ok- getting down off the soap box now – there are fuzzbutts out there that need herding!

And Staff – as Native Americans, we have an expression “We are ALL Related”. Just sayin, in case, you know, you were looking for your next project….tee hee.

  28. Siber-H
    12:42 pm on November 8th, 2011

Bear, Mom has had intact males herself. Back in the day, no one was advising dog owners to neuter their males…just spay the females. Now, she looks back in awe and wonders how she managed with those males as family members. After publicity started coming out about neuter the males, my folks got a male puppy and mom informed dad that the puppy was going be neutered.
Dad had a small adjustment period to go through but he did handle it pretty well.

Laughing here! There was a reason we had six foot fences with double gauge wire! Mac chewed through a fence once. Luckily, he was still too young to understand what was going on. The six feet? Think Frank!

This also reminds me of F’s sister who decided to have two intact GREAT DANES. Not related. She decided to keep the male in the finished basement while the female was in heat. Yeah, right.

The male BROKE DOWN THE DOOR! Then they asked for advice from OTAS who explained nicely that they were nuts. They ended up with puppies.

Ah yes, the good old days. Glad they are in the past. The last few litters have been from males not in the household. They met at the vet’s office and things happened there.

    Hello Plunderers!

Just a quick check-in. I’m off to a staff retreat for the next two days and we will check our cell phones and laptops at the door until tonight sometime. But before I go…

Staff: I think you are going to have family coming out of the woodwork now that they’ve seen Dawson’s awesome quilt.

Tyb: Your pop came up with a great idea for Plunderers who can’t decide between two or more of the photographs. They are are beautiful. Please just email me your orders for Jay’s work.

MMCS Update: I have started sending shipping addresses to the shippers. I have a few outstanding ones that I will try to email tonight.

More MMCS: We have new inventory. Three new DreamCatchers have been added as well as a necklace from Natasha, Vorld’s Best Spy.

Even More MMCS: There were many 1 inventory items that sold and sold quickly. There were also items that had multiples available that also sold out like Stinky Mama’s Dream Catchers and Rio’s Gift Cards. There are a couple of DreamCatchers available, yet if Plunderers are interested in either Stinky Mama’s work or Rio’s cards you can place orders with them directly. No need to feel like you missed out on these great items.

    Take care!

Magpie, I hope Barb feels better soon!

Have to tell you about the morning bark. We have shut the large gate between the Stockade and the Puppy Play yard. Now there is just a human (and large dog) door.

In the morning Zoë goes out with the Pack for Poop Patrol. A very important time. Mac goes out and barks at the others in the Pack to PAY ATTENTION, it is time for the fence barking game.

Mac goes through the door over to the Puppy Play Yard and the barking begins! Mac barks at the Pack through the fence. The Pack barks back at Mac through the fence. Then a portion of the Pack breaks off and goes to Mac’s side of the fence and barks at the others, and then they switch sides.

Oh, did I mention this happens at 700 am??

    Love this Pack.

Today!… My friend came home after spending over 9 hours in a large cold dimly lit room listening to very boring people talk about very boring things…grunt!…At least that’s what she told me. Tonight she walked in the door and her mother had a Grimm look on her grizzled face and immediately informed her that the drugstore called and her insurance refused to let the pharmacy fill her prescription….wheeze!… So instead of getting a “hello how are you?” which come to think of it she never gets, she was made to feel that something she did caused some sort of insurance problem…grump!… After an unplanned trip to the drugstore and finding out nothing is wrong she came home again and had to listen to some other nonsensical news about something ridiculous….sneeze!… I don’t think she’s had a very good day today….sniff!….Even the lunch that was served at that place she was at gave her a horrific stomach ache which she still has….gurgle!burp!

Howdy Plunderers! Wayland is about 15 minutes south of where I used to live in Grand Rapids. And speaking about GRR, there’s quite a bit of a hullabaloo about a restaurant in the furniture city who asked a patron to keep his service dog on the entry of the restaurant. The patron left the business, but the local news did a story, and all sorts of people are complaining because the Federal ADA law allows for service dogs in restaurants, but the penalty for those who refuse to abide by the law is virtually nonexistant. Check my mom’s Facebookie for more deets. Here’s the link to the story.

Its been a long day here. Mama and Dad worked at the polls this morning – getting there at 6:30 am.
Then we had to go to the groomers for our pedicures. Gilly is never going to be great about that, but at least today she didn’t scream bloody blue murder like she used to. Oh, it was awful to hear her when she first came here. She would scream and sob and whimper for an hour after one single nail was clipped. Poor baby girl.

Then it was off to CLL for Mama. She says she is going to bed now because she has a lot to do tomorrow – something about having to ship off some things that were purchased in some boutigue somewhere…..

G’night all. See you all tomorrow.

Since Rebecca is on retreat for a couple of days the store inventory may not be accurate. She did promise to check her emails.

I, for one, have been shopping today. There are 8 of Jay’s photos
on my wish list. Finally made a final decision on one & sent off an email to Bella. I can always come back later for another. (providing any are remaining at that time)

Staff: Look for a special SDD message soon.

Snafu Day. Finally I am up in my room and getting ready to read a little before bed.
Rio: I want to order a set of your friend’s quilled cards. Can you let her know for me?
Wookie: I missed your Dad’s birthday. Please accept belated Happy Birthday wishes. I know he had a great one because I read the reports. Your mom knows a really good present when she sees one!

Well, our night temps are now in the -25 to -30 range but it is still close around zero during the day. Soon it won’t be warming up during the day. So far I have shoveled the driveway 4x this winter and was too tired to shovel it today after work.

I’ve always had my dogs fixed; if one adopts from the pound, that is part of the deal. Life is much easier–although I think puppies are the cutest things on the planet.

I’ve sent Melanie my contribution to the MMCS which she has kindly agreed to photograph. It is a birch bark vase and fur roses.

Wolfie: That pomegranate jelly is sounding mighty good.
Where are the Howlers today? Buying out the store no doubt.
Okay, I’m outa here until tomorrow. All I hear around here lately is: It’s really one hour ahead. No. No it’s not. This IS the real time. Get used to it – until next April that is.
    Good night everyone.

Brrrrrr!….Charris, I don’t know how you survive in those temperatures….grunt!… I’m sure someone’s car would not start if we had temperatures like that over-night here…sniff!….Her car sits out now that we live over here. This is very annoying because every morning she has to scrape ice off the windshields…huffle!

Fur!….What are Fur Flowers?…snort!…I’ve never ever heard of those before!

Rio: I feel for your friend. I used to start the day in a bad mood because I’d spend 20 minutes scraping ice off the windows and warming up the car. I saved my pennies until I could build a garage.

Fur roses–you’ll have to see the photos when Melanie takes them. I sent her plenty so that some can go in the birch bark vase and others be sold separately.

I’m good weatherwise until it hits -35 and lower. At those temperatures you just aren’t going to be warm (at least not on the gear I buy on my salary). Those are the times that I am outdoors just to walk from the parking lot into the school and then back to the car at the end of the day. I do have auto-start for my car but it seems to be too fancy for me in terms of it *actually* starting the car.

Rebecca – is vith pleasure ve give our necklace. But ve are little concerned vith AJ. You say he takes it personal vhen the snow is coming.

You may vant to mention to Mr AJ Giant that you LIVE IN ALASKA!! This means is going to snow! It VILL be cold. Vould be hard to run the sled dogs if not cold. They are Huskies, not Chivavas after all.

Have you been keeping this secret from him, like new stray doggie?
    Tsk tsk.

    Hi Nattie!

We are still up but not for long. Mom spent the day in the big city and she is plum tuckered out. It has been chilly here so she is leaving me and Gus inside the house with the door open between the house and the garage. Then we can come and go through the doggie dog in the garage. She is the best!!!

That necklace brings back some great memories of the Royal Vedding! You were stunning! Still are, for that matter!

Rebecca, the MMCS shows that the 2 items we have donated (so far…we have 1 more coming as soon as we get the picture done)have sold but have not received shipping instructions. Can’t wait to see the new items people are mentioning. Mom is also going back and forth between 2 of Jay’s pictures. Thinking, thinking……
