CRYING WOLF (2000) came up yesterday (see below). Here’s how it begins:

One should not avoid one’s tests, although they are perhaps the most dangerous game one could play and are in the end tests which are taken before ourselves and before no other judge. (Beyond Good and Evil, section 41)Β – Introduction to the syllabus for Philosophy 322, Superman and Man: Nietzsche and Cobain (Professor Uzig)

A rolled-up newspaper spun through the air, defining place. What kind of place? The kind of place often described as idyllic, where a boy on a bicycle still tossed the paper onto lawns and porches, sometimes over actual picket fences, where the newspaper still brought news.

Good morning, everyone! Almost like a Twilight Zone opening, “Submitted for your approval “. We laughed reading the Thieves and Rio.
    Have a wintry Wednesday.

    Good morning all.

Yikes! The beginning of Crying Wolf gives a immediate feeling of something…not so idyllic as it seems.

HOH: I’m looking forward to seeing photos of your house rebuilding. By the way, thank you for the beautiful exotic butterfly scarf and for throwing in an extra…a purple scarf evocative of someone we all know.

Cherries, rotten eggs and hickory ham!
That is what the antique beer in a bottle found at the bottom of the Atlantic tasted like according to those who taste tested it.

I’m reading every other word and can’t remember half of it but here’s hoping Golinka’s elective surgery goes well and if it already happened, then hoping the recovery is speedy and complete.

You are up early, Awesome One. As soon as it gets above freezing, we’ll drag mom outside and get fotos.

Don’t remember if I’ve read Crying Wolf so will check it out.

It’s been a long time since I read Nietzsche. (He’s very interesting.) In The Birth of Tragedy he wrote about his theory of “eternal return” stating that time is infinite, space is infinite, but matter is finite, thus everything occurs again and again. Kate Atkinson, on the other hand, believes that life is a palimpsest. She said that in an interview about her novel Life After Life. (I remember talking about this on the blog when Melanie was reading that novel.)

I think I need a cup of coffee.

    Good morning all.

I remember that word but will have to look up the meaning.

I’m up early to start my fitness challenge. Today is the weight lifting tests. The first is the “dead lift” or pick up from the floor while squatting then stand up straight and the second is the “press” or lifting up weight from shoulders to straight arm overhead. These will be 2 different weights, the latter being much less than the former. I will then have about 2 months to improve these weights.

  7. dawson
    9:37 am on January 6th, 2016

I have had practice in the “press” from lifting my carry on suitcases to the overhead bin while flying. I know I can do 20 pounds easily, 30 pounds with effort and I can probably press 40 with maximum effort…maybe

Dawson, you really are awesome! You try so many things and are constantly on the go!

BSD or Masquers, Mom was wondering if Nana might get a wild hair and head north to Alaska for AJ’s final Iditarod. The Hobbit mentioned in one of her SDDs that Nana often will just travel on a whim.

    11:48 am on January 6th, 2016

Good morning. As usual, this blog is way over my head today. I am referring to Nietzsche and Cobain, not Dawson’s press.

  13. dawson
    1:15 pm on January 6th, 2016

The weight test has been postponed until my Friday class. The electrical tape did not intimidate anyone though it was commented upon. I believe they think I am strange.

Kat: Nietzsche and Cobain are over my head too. I’m reading about palimpsestic stuff and it is mostly over my head too.

I will add Life After Life to my book list.

    1:19 pm on January 6th, 2016

    Ditto to that, Kat.

Good morning, all. We are having a warming trend here, so maybe some of this ice will melt. Have 2-3″ of hard packed snow/ice on the driveway. We will have 3 days of above freezing before the polar air comes in on Sunday, resulting in a 30-40* drop in temps. Yikes!

  15. Masquers
    1:24 pm on January 6th, 2016

That light dusting of snow that seemed to be a permanent part of the landscape has finally melted. How comforting these few warmer degrees in temperature seem to be.
HOH: Hope the weather is cooperating for youse too and that fotos of the progress will be forthcoming soon.
Thinking of T&G’s mama this morning as well.
    Dawson: Press/plunder on!

BooBear: Nana says that Traveling On a Whim remains in the whimsical stage this year. Seeing as our Treatie Jar is at an all time low, and Appointments are on the Calendar for that same time period, I know this to be true. Sob. We would so love to be there this year!

We here have read When Will There Be Good News and Life After Life, both by Kate Atkinson. We especially love her Jackson Brodie Books, of which the first book mentioned and Started Early, Took My Dog are a part of.

Palimpsest is derived from the Greek for “scraped again.” In ancient times when paper (papyrus) was used for writing it was very expensive so scribes would “erase” (scrape) old writing off and write on top of the old script. However, some of the old writing was still visible.

As far as the concept of “palimpsest” used by Kate Atkinson in Life After life, think of the movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murphy.

As for Nietzsche’s Eternal Return, think of life as a circle. When you get back to the starting point, it begins all over as before, ad infinitum.

I’ve never read/heard of Cobain so will have to look him up.

  18. B.Stover
    2:16 pm on January 6th, 2016

Cobain was a singer with Nirvana and committed suicide at 27? (That is a real question.) I don’t understand the link between Cobain and Nietzsche in the Crying Wolf quotation. Does anyone know?

(Nietzsche was “insane” for the last ten years of his life–I’m going on memory here–and it is believed that it was caused by tertiary syphilis.)

  19. Kat
    2:42 pm on January 6th, 2016

Thank you for your patient explanation, Professor Bee. I am much more familiar with Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day. And I like the idea of starting all over again. Momma likes the idea of my starting over when I reach the end, but she says that, if I do, I should remember about going outdoors to pee.

Daddy just had to leave quite suddenly to travel to Virginia, because he received word that one of his brothers is “in bad shape”. Momma is quite nervous. I will have to smooch her.

B: Nana says she Does Not like the Idea of Starting Over Ad Infinitum.
    Spirals Yes, Circles No.

Cobain and Nietzsche both insane? One on Drugs, the other Pain.

  22. B.Stover
    3:23 pm on January 6th, 2016

Bear: With the palimpsest version small things change with each repetition. With the Eternal Return version nothing changes, though not all Nietzsche scholars agree with that interpretation.

The link is apparently made by Professor Uzig on his syllabus–Nietzsche is the “superman” and Cobain is the “man”? Of course, you can never trust professors.

  23. B.Stover
    3:36 pm on January 6th, 2016

By the way, Nietzsche wrote about “superman” which should probably be translated as “overman” in one of his works.

    Kat: prayers
Dawson: if people consider you strange, we are twins.

I am in Southern California where there is flash flood warnings! Yep! Poring rain, thunder and lightning. It is to rain all week. Bummer as I was going to hike the hills to get in shape for my Hawaiian hiking tour towards the end of the month.

I did meet with the contractor about the extension of the Hobbit Hotel. Since Alaska proved so popular, California is a logical expansion. (I am rebuilding a studio on the property of my parents’ house.)

Sadly, before I left Alaska it was time for me to assist my senior foster across the Rainbow Bridge. We had good last morning together and some purrs. She was down to 5 pounds from 15 pounds in early summer and was experiencing some discomfort. RIP to sweet Cami the Curious Calico who had a spitfire personality. 14 years old.
