Crime Bake
“How was yesterday’s Crime Bake panel?” says Spence.
“No one threw anything,” Admin says. “Not even when I floated the idea of a P.I. series with Heinrich Himmler as the P.I.”
“I’m sorry?”
“I think that’s what I said. Illustrating a point, kind of thing.”
“The point being?”
Admin gazes into the distance, possibly thinking. “Have to get back to you on that,” he says.
Welcome Angel, Neil.

I don’t think I’d enjoy that series Admin.
Good morning all.
8:43 am on November 14th, 2011
Good morning! I couldn’t read the post yesterday from Dog On It—it was difficult enough to read the first go around—but I sure would have liked to be present at the Crime Bake.
Rio: I’m sorry to inform you that we got wind of Belle Starr’s plan to send the A team to bring back Bo. Despite her pleas and claiming to be responsible enough to have a dog of her own, we had to say no. Sorry, but I think you might be stuck with your new friend.
9:01 am on November 14th, 2011
Good morning Bee, Rebecca and All.
Busy day here. Barb is heading out to pick up 28 dressed (or undressed) frozen chickens from a friend who raises them -healthy and humane. She is meeting Kelly in Rockford and she is taking 24 of them back to distribute to 2 more people. A lot of driving for 4 chickens!
She plans to do a little Christmas shopping while she is there.
B & N is nearby – need a few gift cards. Also stopping at Menards, a lumber/big box store to get some large bags of bird seed. Got to keep our little feathered friends happy.
Wonder if Bo is still there? If so, things are not looking up for Rio. I am sure he will like having a cute little “brother” if he gives him a chance.
9:15 am on November 14th, 2011
Good Morning All. I agree with B.Stover (always a good thing to do)
Belle Starr: Sorry to hear that your plan did not work out. I can just see Bo being used as a hockey puck.
Barb & MagPie: I totally hope that the chickens are undressed. If they are frozen can you imagine trying to get their dresses off?
Today is a quiet day here in the western hills. Hope it remains that way today. On my schedule? Heart worm shots for the dogs.
9:21 am on November 14th, 2011
I’m no authority, but I can’t imagine why chickens would need clothes in the first place? They never struck me as one’s to acessorize, either but I could be wrong. I hope Barb has fun today.
Melanie: Two of our lead dogs, Twig and Quig love wormer. When they were young we would have to keep them from lapping it up like, well…dogs. Picture two pups running around with wormer mustaches.
9:24 am on November 14th, 2011
Good morning Bee, Rebecca, Barb, Maggie, and all.
Very quiet at our farm. Mom took Kat with her when she left for work. Said something about a “day camp”…whatever that is. We are wondering why the Pipsqueak gets to do stuff we never got to do.
9:26 am on November 14th, 2011
Hi Melanie.
We also would like to know what chickens wear when they “dress”.
9:38 am on November 14th, 2011
Oley and Rebecca, Not quite sure why they refer to removing all sorts of things (TMI) from the chickens as “dressing” them. I am sure the chickens would prefer to remain intact.
I bet Kat is having a fun day.
Off to pick some arugula for Kelly, do chores, and then Barb has to get ready to travel.
9:54 am on November 14th, 2011
Greetings All!
Rio: You have the body of a Greek god. I’m sure Bo knows his place with you around.
Dresser chickens, anyone?

Masquers, my friend, have you considered putting together a book of your lovely photos? I would definitely be first in line to purchase one!
OH: You’re not jealous of Kat, are you?
10:34 am on November 14th, 2011
Rose, us jealous??? Of Pipsqueak???
Well, perhaps just a tinge.
10:41 am on November 14th, 2011
Bake!… I would have loved to have been invited to the Scene of The Crime Bake!…snort!… That would have been a very interesting discussion, barring Admin’s contribution…grunt!… Just the name, “Himmel” makes me want to growl!…sniff!
Mailing!… Is everyone okay with the initial 3 orders of Little Gift Cards going out this Saturday?….snort! …You three know who you are, so email me at riotheevilpug at yahoo dot com if you need or seriously want them sent out tomorrow….wuffle! ….Never mind that it will cost my friend more and be a huge hassle for her….grunt!
10:45 am on November 14th, 2011
Too early in the morning to think of chickens dressed or otherwise.
“Admin gazes into the distance, possibly thinking.” I love it.
Good morning fellow Plunderers.
Rose: You are too kind.
10:52 am on November 14th, 2011
Rose: I can not decide between the red dress and the one with the bow. Both look great. The navy blue, sort of blah.
Zoë just found out that she had one less week than she thought before Thanksgiving!
Lots of phone calls today because of that . . . Here is the confusing plan.
We are having the counter tops replaced between Thanksgiving and Christmas. But they are delivering the new stove (all electric) before than. So Zoë had to call the gas company to come out and turn off the propane to the range of the old stove, turn on the propane to the older stove in the West Wing so we still have a stove that works. Then the guy who is working on the cabinets will come out this Friday and cut out the stove in the main kitchen so it can leave and they can put the new one in. Whew. And that’s not all the day BEFORE Thanksgiving? They are replacing the dishwasher.
Should be an interesting time in the old homestead.
10:58 am on November 14th, 2011
Rose – is as ve have alvays thought. Your photo shows chickens have no sense taste or style. If they did, they vould be vearing hats.
Ve have never understood American expression ” taste like chicken” as being good thing. If somevon said Natasha had taste like chicken, ve vould RUN to fashion consultant to see vhat vas wrong.
Masquers – your photos are very beautiful. Hmmm. Vould you like job interview vith survellance department? Natasha could arrange.
10:58 am on November 14th, 2011
Thanksgiving!…I’m sure glad I am not going to Melanie’s for Thanksgiving….snort!…Even though I am an honorable Newf…heh!
11:02 am on November 14th, 2011
Melanie – ve vould suggest Von more phone call.
“hello grocery store? You make ready made turkey dinner vith all fixings? Good! Send 2!”
( in case honorary Newf does show up)
11:07 am on November 14th, 2011
Kitchen updates are nice when they are finished, but what a mess during!
Loved the dresses. Barb’s chickens have never had anything that fancy.
We picked arugula, dill and parsly for Kelly. Pretty cool for November.
Kelly just called. She is at the vet’s office. Gus hurt his leg and wont’put any weight on it without crying. She called the vet, who doesn’t take appointments, and asked if they could work him in quickly. She explained that Ben has school and then she is heading to Rockford. They told her no – first come, first serve. Did we mention she has known this vet since she was ten? She would switch to someone closer to home, but he is very good and his prices are extremely reasonable.
11:12 am on November 14th, 2011
Melanie!…Be sure to order lots of potatoes and gravy…snort!…Just in case someone honorary or honorable decided to visit…wuffle!…Will Clarkson be there ?…sniff!
11:14 am on November 14th, 2011
Barb, Keep us posted on how Gus is doing. Monday mornings can be very busy at a vet clinic that doesn’t take appointments. We have one here like that. We don’t go to him, but he is very good.
11:16 am on November 14th, 2011
The idea of a p.i. series with Himmler is just plain wierd.
I am so darn happy having my freedom today, without that awful, loud puppy who pretends she is a Kat. Now if only I could ditch the Budster…
11:22 am on November 14th, 2011
Melanie: Interesting times at your house.
Barb&Magpie; Good trip with those birds.
Kat: Enjoy your day. (whispering) you are the youngest now and can enjoy special privileges. Pay no attention to those others who may be envious of your superior status. This is always the way for the youngest member of the pack.
In case you haven’t seen it, we found this link for the New England Crime Bake 2011 (Very good picture of Admin not starring off into the distance:)): >>>>> http://www.crimebake.org/panelists.htm
Too bad Stephen King can’t be there, as this is his stomping ground, but he’s not really a crime writer.
11:27 am on November 14th, 2011
I’m just back from Sam’s house and I’m catching up on everything. Sam’s girl was home so the weekend was busy bedlam. I drove there last Friday in a blizzard – now the temp is in the 50’s. Anyway, I’m glad to be back to peace and quiet. “Serenity now” (from Seinfeld)
I am so moved by the Iditarod checkpoint. This is wonderful beyond belief! Melanie called it Fierce Tails and that’s perfect. When I would sit at the kitchen table drinking my morning coffee, Molly would come over and stick her long pointy snoot up the sleeve of my robe. Then I would scratch her ears and talk into the fur on the top of her head and tell how poufy tail meant fierce tail.
11:39 am on November 14th, 2011
Smiling here, MollyPop’s Mom . . .
Riö: Yes, YSAS will be here. How many extra potatoes and gravy will we need?
11:42 am on November 14th, 2011
MollyPop’s Mom: That is a wonderful, poignant memory. We felt a lump in our throat reading it. The Fierce Tail checkpoint, with its 24 hr. layover, is perfect to show the world how much she is loved.
Maggie: Oh! It made us so mad to hear of that vet refusing to see Gus who was in obvious pain. Our Island Veterinary Clinic always makes room in their busy schedule for animals in distress.
12:03 pm on November 14th, 2011
Poor Gus…we hope he got some relief from the v-e-t by now. Who ever heard of one of those not seeing one of us? It seems to us that they want to see us all too often. But we don’t have on that does not take appts.
Molly’s Mom, we are looking forward to all those mushers and their teams spending time at the Fierce Tail Checkpoint.
Maggie, we think Thanksgiving reservations at your favorite restaurant are in order.
12:14 pm on November 14th, 2011
Check-Point!…How much does it cost to sponcer a check-point?…grunt!…And what does it actually cover?…wuffle!
12:14 pm on November 14th, 2011
Nattie: That would be a feather in my cap! I am almost blushing, if a kat with a mask can blush. Let’s see…..I could add Surveillance Kat to my resume. Pondering…..
12:16 pm on November 14th, 2011
Belle Starr and I have been busy since 2:30 this morning. She’s been busy complaining saying things like, “Why can’t I have Bo?” and “You know how grumpy Rio can get when things do go well,” and “I bet Rose would let me have a dog.” I’ve been busy doing other things and listening to her cries of poor treatment.
The Takotna checkpoint, aka the Fierce Tail checkpoint was where AJ spent his 24 last year. This year will be the northern route of the race, so he may change where he spends his 24, but the Takotna checkpoint is a welcome sight to many a musher.
12:20 pm on November 14th, 2011
Melanie, I agree. Maybe if the dress had been accessorized with a bit of bling….
Masquers, no joke about a book of photos….Special requests taken?
OH: I can relate. I was the baby of the family for six years, until my parents brought home an alien. They tried to explain that was my brother, but I wouldn’t have it. Now 46 years later, he didn’t turn out to be such a bad alien, oops brother, after all!
12:22 pm on November 14th, 2011
Belle Starr, having met you and enjoyed your visit with us, we agree that you would be a sponsible pet owner (whispering…anybody know what that means?)
If Rio can’t bear to part with his new brother Bo, we will make the sacrifice and send Kat your way…if she ever returns home that is.
12:26 pm on November 14th, 2011
Belle: I would let you have any dog you wanted. Could I play with the dog too??
Gus: Sending healing thoughts and prayers your way.
12:30 pm on November 14th, 2011
SnowBella: Will there be a picture of MollyPop at the Fierce Tail checkpoint? A poster perhaps or some kind of information board with her photo on it.
12:31 pm on November 14th, 2011
About V E T s. We find that you need to be very
pushyaggressivepersuasive with the front desk people. We now have the home phone, and two cell phone numbers of our vet so we can bypass the front desk for emergencies. Luckily, he really likes Dan’s writings!
12:31 pm on November 14th, 2011
Bear: A wonderful idea!
12:33 pm on November 14th, 2011
Hope there are no math wizzes out there. TMI left in my post to OH! 🙂
12:35 pm on November 14th, 2011
We have a brand new v-e-t. Mom was very unhappy with the old one because they almost cost her the chance to adopt Kat (wouldn’t that have been awful…NOT). This one is very close to home and all except The Hot One have now met her and love her. She teases Mom about her “weekly appts”. LOL
12:51 pm on November 14th, 2011
Age!….Hmmmm, lets see. Six plus 46 equals…grunt!…Rose, you can’t be that old. I have seen photos of you and you look at least one year younger than that…wuffle!
12:52 pm on November 14th, 2011
Melanie & Howlers: Mom, too, has the direct phone number of our vet. We went through a bunch before finding one we love.
Rose: A photo book? That is an interesting idea for down the road. Mom advises we are too busy to undertake such a project for this year. I will certainly keep you in mind and at the top of the list.
12:55 pm on November 14th, 2011
Heh, heh. Leave it to Rio to jump on a clue.
1:17 pm on November 14th, 2011
To answer some questions: For our kennel we have the checkpoint sponsorship level set at $250. The money goes toward supporting this kennel—in this case it is tagged for purchasing lard and meat for the dogs—a favorite treat of the dogs, and a necessity to supplement their training and race diet.
Will there be a poster of Mollypop at the checkpoint? I’m afraid that I can’t swing that, yet AJ and I discussed it and would like to offer the following to honor Mollypop: Judith, if you would like, AJ (ever concerned with the weight of the sled) could carry Mollypop’s collar with him on the trail. We could mail it back to you after the race.
1:19 pm on November 14th, 2011
Based on the pictures, I thought Rose to be a little older than Belle Starr and younger than me. You must have great genes!
1:54 pm on November 14th, 2011
Taking something of Molly’s along on the sled is a lovely idea. We are wondering if there is something Molly’s mom could bear to part with, that could be left at her Fierce Tails Checkpoint.
Mom emailed to tell us that she spoke to someone at Kat’s Kamp. She was told that Kat is doing very well and is very calm and nice. Mom says she is twirling. Meashka is feeling that all her coaching on rasslemania must have fallen on deaf ears.
2:12 pm on November 14th, 2011
Gosh!
I’m getting choked up with Snowhook Bella’s offer to Mollypop’s Mom. I keep forgetting to say “thank you!” to the AD that made this donation in honor of our own Mollypop with the poufy fierce tail. Thank you!
Melanie: You are going to have a chaotic Thanksgiving. More than usual, I mean. Heh.
Rose: I am a mathematician’s daughter…yet, I have trouble with numbers.
2:27 pm on November 14th, 2011
SnowBella: The solution you and AJ have come up with to honor Mollypop resonates with us. We here will be sending a donation to Snowhook in her name, as well.
3:08 pm on November 14th, 2011
Yeep!… My friend has been so busy making thousands of little gift cards that she forgot to send in her check for the one Item she allowed herself to buy out on the MMCS…grunt!…It’s nothing fun that I can use…grumble!…Its in the mail Rebecca!…snort!
4:20 pm on November 14th, 2011
Sniffling here. That is so awesome about the collar.
C.Harris: Flowers and vase have arrived. Will be thinking on best presentation.
4:28 pm on November 14th, 2011
Melanie: Can’t WAIT to see C.Harris’ presentation!
5:19 pm on November 14th, 2011
They are quite beautiful. Fur flowers and a birch bark vase.
Watched “Bones” Episode 1 Season 7. Good.
5:24 pm on November 14th, 2011
Abbie: Remember thst HUGE leaf Staff had you posing with a while back? Could you ask her what kind they are. The latest wind storm has blown them all over our backyard. Quite amazing.
5:26 pm on November 14th, 2011
Aunt Mollysmom was here this weekend and, ya know what? She lets me counter surf when no one’s looking. She holds me up and I check out everything. Sometimes a very small piece comes my way.
5:49 pm on November 14th, 2011
Sammy: Sounds like someone is getting the Princess treatment.
5:56 pm on November 14th, 2011
Sam, Trigger will be very proud of Mollypop’s mom.
6:04 pm on November 14th, 2011
I received the Sled Dog Dreaming cards from Melanie. They are lovely! (I like the ribbon tying them together: red with white paw prints.)
6:09 pm on November 14th, 2011
Rio: You make a very good detective! Thanks for the compliment (I think).
Dawson: I’m not a mathematician’s daughter either. I’ve always been horrible in math!
Bella: Thank you for the compliment. The Prof always calls me “Dorian Gray”. I’m sure MollyPop would be honored to know that AJ will carry her collar.
6:10 pm on November 14th, 2011
Maybe Trigger could put together a curriculum for Small Dog Counter Surfing.
6:15 pm on November 14th, 2011
Sam: What a weekend! Counter-surfing, and having your girl home! Any pictures?
6:16 pm on November 14th, 2011
Well Barb is back home, fianlly! She did stop at the butcher shop and bought me a big smoked round bone, since I had to spend the day alone. I have forgiven her.
Gus has some sort of artiritis in his front elbows. He is only
2 1/2, sort rather young for that, I would think. He came from a breeder in Green Bay Wi. Melanie might know who it is. Has been a breeder of Newfs for many years. The vet says this will not shorten his life, but he can’t be doing the wild crazy romps that he likes to do in the backyard. Walks are in order.
The vet will take “emergencies” right away, which is what they consider life-threatening cases. Everyone else waits. Ben never did go to school today, they just came straight from the vets to Rockford, so poor Gus had a long day. He has some pain meds, anti-inflamitories, etc.
We read what Molly’s mom wrote about her, and it brought tears to Barb’s eyes. Then again when she read about the collar. Very special tributes for a very special girl.
6:17 pm on November 14th, 2011
Sam, that’s a good idea, though MollyPop’s Mom might get tired of holding all the those dogs up in the air.
6:34 pm on November 14th, 2011
Ha ha Melanie. Just me. Those other dogs will have to find their own doting Aunts. Just moi moi moi.
6:54 pm on November 14th, 2011
Barb, sorry to hear about Gus. Couldn’t tell you any breeders up there in WI. Have enough trouble trying to remember them about here. Arthritis in large dogs can set in for a few reasons. One is hereditary, more common though is an old injury that might have been thought of being a small injury but creates the arthritis. Another would be playing with small dogs and trying to make those turns the small dogs can take. Especially when the dogs are young.
Bummer.
7:00 pm on November 14th, 2011
Holy geez, guys!!!!! Mom and Kat got home a little while ago, and Mom had 2 packages with her that must have been delivered today. My purchase from the MMCS!!!!! Gus and Boo Bear, those wind chimes are bee-a-utiful looking and lovely sounding. You were right that its way prettier than even that pretty picture on the website.
7:07 pm on November 14th, 2011
Buddy is right about the wind chimes, and we are the lucky ones who will be listening to them on our front porch.
The other package was much more up our alley thought, so to speak. The Sled Dog Dreaming note cards. They’re great, especially because thats how we always dream, and now even more so since getting to know Snowhook. And to echo Bee, even the ribbon tieing them up is so way cool, with the little hoof prints.
Kat is completely pooped. So whatever that kamp is about must be very strenuous. But she does seem to be very contented and happy. Altho we have never seen her otherwise.
7:17 pm on November 14th, 2011
Franklin & I have been thinking of adding classes for the smaller dogs. As we all know, reaching the higher elevations is quite a problem for them. Some, like Sam and Rio, are able to effectively charm their way through any difficulty. Others can only sit by in frustration as others take the prize.
7:58 pm on November 14th, 2011
Let’s Hear it for the Small Dogs!! Woo Hoo
Melanie!! Received the sled dog cards today! That was such a creative idea to do them…We love them!!
T&G We did not receive anything today but it isn’t time to go goat hunting yet. We were the last to receive the toffee last Christmas even though, except for Rio, we live the closest to Wolfie
8:11 pm on November 14th, 2011
I’m glad you guys are enjoying the cards. I really am not good at tying bows.
Trigger, glad you and Franklin are working together. You larger dudes do need to take care of the little dudes.
I’m headed off to bed. TTFN
8:39 pm on November 14th, 2011
Hey Masquers, It was a Maple tree. I was thinking Red Maple but according to Google Images that is a slightly different leaf.

It looks most like the leaf of the sugar maple. You could have syrup!
8:42 pm on November 14th, 2011
Melanie: If you are turning in that means it’s time for our supper: spaghetti & meatballs with leftover french bread; a mixed green salad with tomatoes and mushrooms and blueberries & cream for dessert.
You mentioned using aluminum foil for wrapping packages. We just read this is the in vogue thing to do. At our house the Sunday funnies make a fun wrapper for birthday presents. Nana is not good at wrapping either and forget tying bows. However, both boys have inherited their dad’s artistic touch and can be quite creative.
Talk to you all tomorrow – Bear
8:53 pm on November 14th, 2011
Uh oh!…Someone is going to feel real guilty about her bad time management skills this past weekend after she reads that some of youse guys are receiving your Special Items from the MMCS….snort!…Heck, she didn’t even get her money sent out till this afternoon for what she decided to buy…grunt!…Well, no one is whistling Dixie and saying they want the cards this week, so that is her saving grace for now…heh!
Bo!…He is still here… grump! ….She came home and took him for a walk. Heck just getting his All Leather harness and leash on him is an event…snort!… Then he gets off the front porch and drops his load all at once on the first rose bush he sees which is only one foot from the patio…heh!…After that he has to pretend to pee on things. At least he isn’t embarrassing my friend as they walk down the block…heh! …Apparently, he can’t pretend to pee and walk on his two front legs at the same time…chorkel!
9:25 pm on November 14th, 2011
Staff: Thanks for passing along the info on our leaves. Maple syrup? That would be great, however the tree is not one of ours so not quite sure where those beautiful leaves blew in from.
Looks like everyone is getting their sled dogs cards so we can expect ours soon.
Siber & Barb: I know what you said about A Dogs Purpose, but it was already ordered from the library and now it’s here. So Mom says she is going to give it a go. It doesn’t take much to bring her to tears, so we’ll just have to wait and see how she does with it.
9:33 pm on November 14th, 2011
Okay…first I get a message saying: Please slow down you posting too fast…then lost internet access. Probably best to sign off early while we can.
So have a good night everyone. I’ll catch up in the am.
9:41 pm on November 14th, 2011
Bear, That dinner sounds delish! Barb had a simple mushroom-swiss burger after all her running around today. She had picked up a loaf of good bread at Panera Breads today. Can’t get the good stuff around here.
Masquers, let us know what you think about the Dog’s Purpose.
Barb listened to Jacqueline Kennedy all the way to Rockford and back today. The book she checked out from the library has 8 cds with it, with the original interviews in 1964. The tapes were sealed for almost 50 years. Pretty interesting.
10:01 pm on November 14th, 2011
Thank you Melanie for letting me know the fur flowers arrived. It is so hard to mail anything up here. The nearest P.O. was one of the ones on the federal closure list and was closed for good; the other closes its doors at 5:00. I once had the door closed in my face after waiting in line for 20 minutes.
Tomorrow’s high temp is supposed to be -24. The next 3.5 months are the hard ones but at least I will be in KY for Thanksgiving so I can see my Dad. I am hoping for some good weather. I got my flu shot today since I will be traveling.
10:12 pm on November 14th, 2011
C.Harris, we’re still running our A/C down here in Texas. Can not imagine living where its minus anything all the time! Stay warm.
10:38 pm on November 14th, 2011
Greetings all – once more just a quick check in.
Here’s today;s CL joke:
One of the members is our City Clerk, who runs the elections. We just had mayoral elections this last week, and Clerk was talking to Mama about the poor turnout, since Mama works at one of the polling places. CL jumped in and started talking about what a shame it was when people didn’t exercise their rights by voting. And how the people of the city really showed apathy by not turning out. Clerk asked CL which ward she lives in….CL admits to not knowing CUZ SHE NEVER VOTES.
Clerk looks at Mama, shakes her head and walks away.
See -its not just us that thinks she’s NUTS!
CHarris – so glad you are going to get warmed up for Thanksgiving. We think you should dig your heels in and refuse to go back north til summer!
10:54 pm on November 14th, 2011
Crazy!…. It always amazes me how those who know so little always talk way too much…grunt!…They always give their lack of knowing away eventually…heh!
Bed!….Well, my friend and I have to go upstairs and settle things down….heh!…Bo is driving her mother crazy tonight by barking at his shadow…snort!….I can’t wait till this guys leaves, let me tell ya….huffle!…Goodnight all!
11:08 pm on November 14th, 2011
Melanie,
I got my cards today also. Dawson and I couldn’t wait to open the package. And, like Rio, I am a slow mailer. I only got my four packages mailed today. First I wanted to mail them on Friday…Oops, Veterans day. Then I went on Saturday, at 3 pm, and the PO closes at 1 here on Saturdays. Sigh. So they got mailed on Monday.
Just so you know.
Night all. See you tomorrow.
11:25 pm on November 14th, 2011
Mom is the slowest Plunderer of all. Slow but sure. I think that everyone will like her stuff. If she ever figures out how to send the photos to Melanie from Dad’s Droid. Geeze.
