Cries In The Night

“What were those noises in the night?” says Admin.

“Noises?” says Spence.

“You didn’t hear them? An awful kind of crying, like some creature was having a nightmare?”

“Nope,” says Spence. “By the way, you don’t look like you had a good sleep.”

“On account,” says Admin, “of that horrible crying.”

“Got it,” Spence says.

Bernie looks up from his coffee. “Maybe it was a chupacabra,” he says.

“What’s that?” say the others.

I go outside, smell a creature that’s new to me. Also, here’s a beach ball that’s lost most of its air. How did that happen? Any chance I had something to do with it? Not that I remember. I take it inside. I always like watching humans blow up beach balls, the way their cheeks puff out.

Chet, I bet chupacabra smell alot like mangey coyotes!

We are back home. I was really glad to see Barb last night, and she brought me a giant stocking with all kinds of chewy things in it. Delish!

She said Christmas was wonderful with the family, and she did a lot of eating and partying for three days. Trip over there was really slow, due to snow, but coming back was fine. Now she has to start putting all that stuff that she got away.

Melanie, We couldn’t open the attachment you sent, so Barb said she would try it later in the week when she is at work.

Going to go have a tosted asiago bagel and coffee. BBL

Melanie: I’m glad OTAS and F got there OK. We’ve been watching the news coverage of the blizzard, and it looks like they might have had some white-knuckle travels! We were amazed by our little bit of snow — earliest in the season recorded snowfall ever! — although not quite a white Christmas since it started falling here about 2 o’clock the next morning. Having lived up north themselves, Mom and Dad always have to laugh about how people here react to snow — round-the-clock television coverage and church/business/school cancellations as soon as the first flake falls! Or if snow is even predicted!!!

Kirby, Barb’s brother and family live in Cary, N.C., near Raleigh-Durham, and they had 7″ of the white stuff yesterday. You are right-shopping malls closed, restaurants, too. Eveything shuts down. Kay said it was a beautiful snow though, and they were really enjoying it. Will be gone by the end of the week when temps reach mid 60s.

Rio, We loved Blind Side, and Sandra Bullock really nails the real life character she is portraying. Give it a shot.

Barb and Maggie: Raleigh got a lot more snow — we got about two and a-half inches, and a lot of that is gone already. Mom and Dad and my boy are going to the beach over New Year’s. They were glad to see the temperatures are supposed to be in the 60s by the time they go. They’ve always had really good luck when they go to the beach — this is the eighth year they’ve gone, and they’ve had great weather every year — except once it rained a couple of times, but not enough to ruin the walks on the beach. The only problem is that the island is eroding — the cabin they rented the past six years is unvailable this year because the road washed out. Last year their cabin was OK, but lots of the other cabins were standing in the ocean. The one they got this year is further inland, so it should be alright.

I think they’re back “home.” Perhaps the crying Admin heard in the night was Spence crying over the spilt Cahors. Maybe some of it spilled onto the manuscript of Dog Who that was on his desk and he doesn’t have another copy so will have to rewrite that entire chapter. Yikes!

Rio: I haven’t spent much time in Greenville — it’s in what they call the “upstate” of South Carolina, a couple of hours from here. Mostly Mom and Dad drive past the exit when they’re going to visit my girl at school. She’s spent some time there, and seems to like it. Because they’re further north than we are, they may get more snow, but still not much. They have a zoo, and our minor league baseball team moved there. Other than that I don’t know much about it. I just looked, and they do have a nice website:

Rio: I knew you were going to say both things–beach ball=vacation so they’re still there; and Spence crying over spilt Cahors=funny. Perhaps they are still on vacation and the mention of the chupacabra is a reference to SH’s writing about it on the blog. Spilt Cahors, however, is a very serious matter. It’s expensive and it’s hard to find and it’s heavenly. Ask Wookie and Kirby.

Tyb found a free Kindle book that looks interesting – A Dog Named Slugger. These books can also be read on an iPad so I’ll let people know about that later after Dan gets his set up.

You can find free Kindle books 2 ways:

    1. On the computer: Go to Amazon, Shop All Departments (on left), Kindle, Kindle Store. Page down a bit and on the right is Bestsellers, Kindle Store. That list defaults to Top 100 Paid, so click on the tab Top 100 Free.

    2. On the Kindle: Go to the Amazon Store. Click on Kindle Bestsellers. That will bring up the Top 100 Paid. Go to the top right for Top 100 Free.

Many times books will be free for just a few days when they first come out. That boosts the sales numbers. (Hint, hint Spence)

Regarding page two: Whenever I refresh while on page two it still takes me to the middle of page one. I then have to go up or down and click on 2 and I’m then put at the top of page 2 which means that I have to scroll down to get to the comment box. It is this that takes the time.

As I said, if Plunderers want to use my blog after we reach page two here, please do so. If you don’t want to sign in, I have turned on the “anonymous” user so you can sign in that way. (Just remember to sign who you are at the bottom of your comment so we’ll know.) From the research that I’ve done, I believe that 200 comments will fit on the first page of the template I’m using.

Hi everyone. Greetings from snow-free Chevy Chase. While I am actually kind of partial to snow myself, I know it can be a headache for the two-legged members of the family, especially grandpa, so I’ll forego the pleasure for the sake of others. Mom went with Aunt Lisa to a quilt store this morning (they were having a big sale so Mom and Lisa stocked up on supplies for the premie quilts that the guild makes). Me and dad and later me and dad and grandpa took what we refer to a “boy walks” — no girls allowed, although walks with mom and dad are still be best. Dad is getting better with the iPad and we’ve loaded some books for grandpa on his Kindle. Just kind of a relaxing day now, so I just may need to take a nap. BBL. Wookie

Wookie – Your Grandpa’s Kindle books can be read on your Dad’s iPad. Have your Dad go to the iPad apps and get the free Kindle app. Then every book that Grandpa has can be loaded on the iPad. Your Dad can buy Kindle books on Grandpa’s account and they can share them.

My Mom has 3 devices registered in her Amazon account – her Kindle, her iPad, and Sam’s Mom’s Kindle. The books listed on the account can be loaded onto any of those three.

I think it would be a good idea to post that recipe Rio. I know the Kats would like some scalloped potatoes….NOT

My dad definitely remembers the Last of the Dixie Heros track on the facebook page. My dad generally doesn’t do the facebook thing, but he did that one time. It was a very good book, fairly dark at times, but with a good ending.
We vote yes for posting the recipe too.
