Contest Redux

“Last day of May,” says Spence. “Just about time for a new Friend of the Month.”

“Should we remind everyone of the rules?” Admin says.

“Can’t be too careful in this world.”

“Belt and suspenders.”

“Plus safety pins.”

“Okay, enough of that,” Spence says. “Once a month one Friend of Chet is chosen as Friend of the Month. The winning team – dog and human – will receive an autographed copy of the latest book in the series, and the Friend of the Month picture will be posted on the blog’s front page sidebar for that month, where Ian is now. The choice will be random.”

“Based on complex formulas first devised by Isaac Newton and later refuted by Heisenberg?”

“Exactly. No need for anyone out there to post a picture every month – once you’re a Friend of Chet, pictured in the gallery, you’re in the pool. And let’s admit that some of the friends aren’t from the nation within, and that’s fine.”

“Is this clear? Or does it sound like something written by the government?”

    For Ian!
    * So long, it’s been good to know yuh;

So long, it’s been good to know yuh.
We wish you had come on Chet’s blog just to talk
But now Ian is go’ng to be gone.

Admin: The rules would have to be much longer to sound like it was written by the government.

    *Apologies to Woody Gutherie

LOL! Something written by the government. Love it! And I think Ian is a very handsome dog.

    Good morning all.

Hi Melanie. Hope YSAS has a good trip back. (I know you’ll miss him.) Also hope the doctor fixes Dan’s infection.

We have a heat advisory…..It’s already 78. From heater to ac in two days……I’m moving to Antarctica for the summer.

    I don’t know B.Stover, further North they’re having those fires . . .

When I was looking at the weather map this morning, they said you might have severe thunderstorms. Take care!

YSAS and I are leaving around 10. That will give us plenty of time to for the 12:30 train. Hmmm. I think I’ll just check that website again . . .

Have a safe trip Melanie. Glad you had a nice visit with YSAS, and also hope Dan gets some help from the doc today.

We are supposed to get high winds starting in about an hour. So far so good.

Yup, we won’t miss Ian. He is a handsome dog, but not very appreciative. Hope June’s star is more attentive.

We loved the pics T & G’s mama posted last night. Beautiful artwork and their dad is a very handsome guy. They must be very proud of him.

T & G, ducks can certainly be herded. At the working shows, they often have dogs herd a variety of critters. Sheep being the most common, but sometime they herd cattle, which would be more difficult and require more grit. Sometimes they herd ducks, to show that they can notch it down and be more gentle, and only use as much force as necessary. English Shepherds (my breed) are very good at this, since back in the day, they did all these things for their farmer/partner. Also watched the kids and killed the rats (and not the other way around!).

My family loved the picture of AJ and Annabelle. Such love. That’s why I give Molly some of my chew strip money to send to them each month. I admit I was a bit whiney about it at first but Molly made me do it. Now I’m happy to give up some chew strips and I just chew on the legs of the furniture instead.

I would like to be the next friend of the month, of course. (Because that would really twist Ri0’s knickers) But if it can’t be me I think George the pheasant would make a good friend.

    Heh heh heh

Alice – George is indeed a handsome fellow. Gilly wants to know if he can be herded.

No George has gone over the Rainbow Bridge. He was not herdable when he was here. He did try to herd the van though. That is why he is over the Rainbow Bridge.

TupnGill – I loved your pictures from the show. Do you have any close-up pics of the art work hanging in the background of the photo of your dad?

  15. Tupper and Gilly
    12:07 pm on May 31st, 2011

Hi MollyPop – We don’t have any right now that we can post. When Mama does photography for jurying into a show, she does it with her “good” camera, and the computer doesn’t like to synch with that one. These photos were taken with her phone, and she was just taking overall kind of shots. The background of Dad’s picture was some of Mama’s leather Wisdom Keeper baskets that are lined with fur and decorated with feathers and antlers. And the hanging feathers are some of her clay sculptures.

TupnGill – All I can say is WOW!!!

  18. Tupper and Gilly
    12:46 pm on May 31st, 2011

Siber – we have a real good friend who is a GIGANTIC Alaskan Malamute. He is just huge, but he is a lovely, gentle and happy dog and he woo woos whenever he sees a friend. He comes to the art shows with his people – they bring huge bags of ice just for him to lay on.
Besides the size differences – what other differences are there between Siber dogs and Malamutes?

  19. BearSpiritDog
    12:55 pm on May 31st, 2011

Whew! Just caught up from yesterday. Sounds like Everyone had a Great Memorial Day with Steaks and Swims and even Tacos.
SnowBella: Loved the photo of Conversation With Annabelle (and for some reason we were able to download the first BMP picture – It was Huge!)
T&G: Your mom must be very tired, but happy, from the weekend show. The photos were great! We found the beaded animals from the friend in Ruwanda very interesting – it’s our kind of thing.
Kirby: We know what your folks mean when they say they “need a vacation from the vacation”. Too much fun can be exhausting (lol)
Barb&Maggie: Getting into the story now in Unbroken. Love her writing style. She makes us feel like we are right there.
Friend of the Month: Hmmm…you don’t think Ian is Redbone Hound do you?

  20. Siber-H
    1:18 pm on May 31st, 2011

T&G, Alaskan Malamutes are huge, aren’t they. Malamutes were bred by the native people in the Arctic to pull a lot of weight…like whale meat back to camp. They are very slow but they get the job done.
Siberians were bred by the native people of Siberia for speed and endurance. We are a lot faster and can go a lot farther than a Malamute. Unlike a Malamute, we can and have done the Iditarod. We can finish it, but we don’t win.
Alaskan Huskies are our Iditarod experts.

I’m telling mom about the bags of ice. That sounds like a winner for us Huskies at the dog park.

  21. Tupper and Gilly
    1:31 pm on May 31st, 2011

Siber – our friend Barrker the Malamute (yup his name is a pun) LOVES his ice bags. He jumps around like a little puppy when they are getting them out of the cooler. Then he rips open the plastic right in the middle of the bag, and alternates putting his paws in it, and then his nose and “huffling” into the ice water. After that, he lays down on it like it was the softest down comforter ever made and goes to sleep.
Our friends tell us that Malamutes have a very slow metabolism and in warmer weather Barrker usually only eats every other day, although he is always offered food.
We would NEVER make good Malamutes – we want to make sure we eat every day, at least once a day – warm, cold or wet weather!

Virus!….My friend says a virus broke loose over the weekend and zapped her computer…heh!…Boy, I bet she is mad as hell because today is some deadline for something at the busy place…snort!

Eating!….My and her mom eat all day long and then we eat some more when my friend comes home…burp! …Life is really good here!…heh!

B: Forgot to say thanks for the update on Audrey. Good to hear her recuperation is on schedule. Also, for sending the lists to Spence and Admin. Do we have a save place to put little interesting tidbits, such as the Marauding Goats and Astrid, or has that already been done?

Siber-H: I enjoyed reading about the differences between Malamutes, Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Huskies – How they have been bred differently for specific tasks.

Melanie: Hope the doc will prescribe something that will take care of Dan’s lingering infection once and for all. It’s no fun feeling bad. I know you are sorry to see YSAS go back to the city. Spending time with family on long holiday weekends is the best!

Contest!…Here’s what I want to know…sniff!…Why does Admin and Spencer continue to call it a “Contest”?…grunt! …. When it’s really just randomness and luck….huffle! …No skill involved unless you count the part about posting your photo….grunt!

  29. Siber-H
    2:53 pm on May 31st, 2011

I didn’t know that about Malamutes and their metabolism. It can be 100 degrees out and I will still eat twice a day, but there are Siberians that eat more like Barrker.

Bear, I am going to say the same thing Mollypop did about Ian. He isn’t our charming southern gentlemen, Redbone. Mom thinks she knows who Redbone is, but she won’t tell me either. This whole trust issue with our moms goes back to the time Mollypop and I ordered some dog toys online with our moms’ credit cards.
The moms need to get over this. jeez

    3:00 pm on May 31st, 2011

T & G, No you are not confused, Ian is a GSD. A Redbone Hound is a kind of Coonhound. Very different. If Molly knows who Redbone is, does that mean he is related to someone else on the blog? Give us a hint Molly, please.

Okay, we know now Redbone Hound is a friend of a friend, so to speak, but still know nothing about Ian. Since this is his last day, I guess we never will. Hoping here the next Friend of the Month will be more “friendly”.

    Greetings to All!

My best wishes for a speedy recovery to those that are ailing.

Sam: Mattie said to tell you that besides furniture, wooden balcony railings are great to chew on . . . (She nearly chewed through three. It’s wonderful what a coat of paint will cover up).

They have figured out what is wrong with Dan. He has a cyst on the inside. It’s because of tubes they had in him for so long. 🙁

He’s getting it removed at a different doc’s office.

They also don’t know why this particular antibiotic was helping with his lungs. It wasn’t supposed to.

Dog, am I tired. I keep ending everything with a preposition. Hope B.Stover while forgive me.

    Time for a movie . . .

Oh no, Rose, I think Rio was joking. He meant (I think) that his friend would send HIM! You are way too trusting!!!!

    4:54 pm on May 31st, 2011

I’m a happy Husky because they have figured out what is wrong with Dan and that the cyst can be removed at a doctor’s office instead of the hospital.

Hurrah for a solution to Dan’s health issue. What a relief for you, Melanie & Zoe.

Should be safe to put some personal info on dish, right? Or Melanie, the Keeper of the Keys, could assist.

Rose: I also thought Rio meant the picture, but, now that I think about it, that doesn’t make sense.

Mom is a little grumpy because she had jury duty today. The court is 1 hour away in the opposite direction of work and they don’t pay mileage on the first day, only on the second day. And then the security guard wouldn’t let her take her camera inside so she had to walk all the way across the street and hide it in a bush and hope that nobody took it. (Luckily, they didn’t because it is a new camera!)

I think that Rio would like New York!

I wanted to let everyone know that Wolfie’s Boys are doing well!
Chad has been clean and sober for about six weeks, and Cody is almost at 2 weeks. Mom is cautiously hopeful, but Dad is still pretty upset. But they have both been going to church and youth group and counseling, not because mom made them but because they want to. Wanted to share the semi good news with you because I know that the Plunderers have all been pulling for Wolfie’s boys.

  57. Melanie
    7:28 pm on May 31st, 2011

Wölfie, Good news! I understand the cautiously hopeful. It is hard row they have.

A friend of ours picked up the following broache at an estate sale. WOW! She’s wearing it for all the Newfs who have gone over the rainbow bridge.

    Totally awesome!

Hey, y’all! Dad was hogging the computer all afternoon so this is the first I’ve been able to get on. I almost wish he would go back to work! (But then again, it’s nice having him home all day!) Mom told him this morning as she was leaving for work that she would give him today off. I don’t know what she’s talking about — he gets the whole summer off!!!

Wolfie, Thanks for letting us know about your boys. I am hopeful, and you are darn right that we are pulling for Wolfie’s boys.

Wolfie? How is your heartworm treatment coming along? I found out from Husky rescue that they are using the same method of treatment that you had and they are having good luck with it.

Melanie, that is a beautiful broache and I love her reason for wearing it…to honor those who have gone over Rainbow Bridge.
Do you have any idea how old the broache is?

  62. Liz
    7:42 pm on May 31st, 2011

Good morning all! It sounds so nice and warm over where you are. Sigh. First day of winter here.

B – re ending sentences with prepositions, I read the following somewhere (probably the Guardian Weekly, so you may already know it): A mother brings a book up to her child at bedtime to read to her but the child didn’t like the book and said “Why did you bring that book that I don’t want to be read to out of up for?” – !

    8:11 pm on May 31st, 2011

Oh Wolfie that is great news. We will be pulling for those two boys, and for your Mom and Dad.

I freely admit I have no idea whatsoever who Natasha and Redbone Hound are.

Liz that is a very funny statement! As far as summer we were pretty hot and bothered last night but today the Turtleman came over and put in our window air conditioners. Thank dog.

And Maggie we finally put in our tomatoes. I thought we were late but I read in the paper that because of all the cold weather the ground was still too cold for the warm weather crops till this week. Heh. And here I thought I was too lazy and too late.
I planted sweet Basil, Parsley and 4 tomato plants. Now we will see if the bunny will leave the herbs alone. I have low expectations.

Speaking of Herbs I haven’t heard from them lately. Are they being good? Sulking because they didn’t get to go to the art show?

Rio, you may be grumpy about the Rockies but the Twins have descended to the lowest record of any team in either league.
    Sigh. 🙁

What I meant by that statement earlier about the Marauding Goats and Astrid was – should we put our stories on dish for safekeeping so newcomers can catch up on things?

Melanie: A beautiful broach! I wonder how old it is.

Hi Liz! I love that picture! Such innocence in the face of overwhelming evidence!

Fog!…Is that the one with Kiefer Sutherland in it?….heh!…We never saw it. Probably never will, she hates blatant horror films…sniff!

June!….After May is finally over and that damned Ian is off the blog then the Rockies will do a lot better…grunt!…At least this is what me and my friend are counting on…gruffle! …Something has to change and it might as well be Ian…dammit!

Rose!… After that trip to England and her having to drive to New Mexico (thanks a lot SiberH!) to pick me up, she says I will never be let on a plane again in my very short life…..wuffle!… So this probably means I will not be vacationing in NYC this Spring or Summer…grunt!

MollyPop & T&G: Regarding the earlier post – Just throwing things out there. I knew Ian was a German Shepard Dog, but couldn’t help but notice the red coloring. Of course the Hound part of the name is a dead give-a-way to Redbones’s ancestry.

darn, Rio, I was planning on you having a wonderful vacation and being farther away from Annabelle at the same time.

Melanie, We like horror movies from the 40’s and 50’s best also. They knew how to tell a story then. They had to because they didn’t have all the special effects they do now. Today’s horror movies seem to rely on special effects and that is all there is to them.

Bear, did you ever see Curse of the Demon? That is one of our favorites. More favorites are some of the early Hammer films.

Rio, we are having an early night also so we will only watch part of the game. The Dodgers are the WORST..yuk and double yuk
They seem to be losing fans like I lose hair.

    Dear Rio,
I am not sure you could gloat for a month, but if anyone can it would be you. Keep on keepin’ on and you will get to gloat sooner or later. After all I think you have more pics up there than anyone.

Not that I am complaining. I have two up myself and Staff has one and Abbie has one also. And if you count Dawson there is another. I am not sure if Fatty Kitty and A Catty Librarian are up, but if they are we have you surrounded.

Good luck to a plunderer anyway.

Twins 7 Detroit 8…at least Dawson is happy. I think she is in Vancouver tonight, half way home.

    Alice out for the night.

Late, we know but Mom had to work really late tonight. She almost went right to bed, but as usual, felt we needed our
    Chet fix.

Tup&Gil, Mom has a collection of the Oaxacan figures (all cats of some sort)that she picked up in Mexico. Back when it was safe, she would go with a bunch of her friends for weekend of shopping. Each year, she would bring back another Oaxacan cat figure. She has several that are quite impressive (and most are signed by the artist.)

Have any of you read the new Nora Roberts (we know…romantic suspense)book called “The Search”. The main character has labradors and trains dogs for search and rescue. Good read (sorry, B) and very interesting info on search and rescue dogs.

    Good night, all.
